None of the instructional videos said to do that. Finally I put searched "problem installing filter" and it took me right here. Your advice addresses an important gap in the manufacturer's instructions on the replacement filter package, which fail to note that you need to swing the filter housing out before removing the old filter. I didn't have a wooden spoon handle with the right diameter, but eventually found a piece of flatware whose handle was a good enough fit. Really appreciate your uploading the video with a good, clear explanation of the problem and solution.
It was the wooden spoon that made it work. The filter holder was put back in position and presto, the filter slid back on, no leaks. Thanks so much for sharing.

Hi Sir, you just saved me closed to 400 in repairs. Thank you. Through GE just 109 to come then labor and part. I had to be patient in pushing on white part of the hinge. Put the wooden spoon in and moved the inside to the fully out position and then the cartridge went in and locked into place!!!! No pressure pushing in the filter at all. Just hold in place and swing back into the holder. The directions never said it didn’t need any pressure! Your wooden spoon did the trick! My cousin is so grateful. She is back in ice and cold water! Thanks! had the same problem! BTW, there is a empty filter bypass available for those of us who don't want/need filtering. GE is supposed to send that part with the fridge but they don't! One can get it for free from GE if you call their number. They are all Sneaky, I know! Also when you put that authentic GE bypass in, the panel will say every time you get water or ice "Not filtering". Fine by me, we have excellent quality town water.

Mr Ramirez, I love you!! You are the ONLY one who knows what the problem was. I bought a generic filter from Amazon. Tried to fit in and it would not stay. I bought another on Amazon but chose the GE filter. Same problem. I called GE and they said all the filters sold on Amazon are bogus. Amazon returned my money and told me to keep both filters. Went to Lowes the next day and bought a authentic GE filter. Still would not work........I screamed all kinds of words. Mind you we are having a heat wave in Ohio. 2 days with no ice or cold, filtered water. GE web site was useless. Then I got on UA-cam and found you! You are the only one who has figured out this problem. Once again I love you.......the ice and water is flowing again!

OMG, thank you SO MUCH. We are always frustrated by this water filter, and finally someone explained the importance of rotating the old filter all the way out, otherwise you can’t fit the new one in the housing without breaking the plastic things on the side. Whew, gonna be a master of this frig now.

This was excellent. I messed up and twisted (dork!). Then I saw somewhere else about using a wooden spoon handle but I was trying to untwist it with that. The video shows how you need to gently put the handle in the white part and gently rotate it HORIZONTALLY to make the white part (and the socket there) swing out to 30 degrees or so, to put it in the right place. Excellent. Thanks for making this vid...

Thanks for the video. It saved my neighbor a lot of money. Tried the Sharpie - maybe I didn't first push it in hard enough. The wooden spoon did the trick. Problem is that the device swings back in if you remove the old cartridge before swinging it out all the way. Thanks again.

Allow me to be the latest to thank you for solving our problem. The water spout actually began squirting about a cup of water inside the fridge once every 30 minutes or so. You rock!

Thank you! I had changed the filter twice before with no problem, but this time it would NOT fit in when I pushed. I used the wooden spoon handle and shifted the housing ever so slightly to the right -- and BAM -- in it went - no more problems. I add my thanks to those I saw here (which convinced me to try it).
You got me on the right track, but I couldn’t figure out exactly what you meant. So….to help further, you’ll know it’s not going to work if the gray and white parts of the hinge/housing aren’t properly aligned. Push the inner white part, using the end of the spoon, to meet up with the gray part. The end of a sharpie works well also…. THANK YOU!

Exactly what I needed. I suspected the housing was out of alignment, used a sharpie marker because all my wooden spoons are flat-handled for some reason. Many thanks!
I tried a silicone coated spoon, a metal flatware spoon, and FINALLY located a wooden spoon with a half inch or 5/8 inch diameter. It went in like butter, was able to turn the housing out. Pushed in the filter. Voila! Thank you so much. Now, I know to clear the stuff at the top of the refrigerator so I can open the filter to the 45 degree angle.

This was excellent. I messed up and twisted (dork!). Then I saw somewhere else about using a wooden spoon handle but I was trying to untwist it with that. The video shows how you need to gently put the handle in the white part and gently rotate it HORIZONTALLY to make the white part (and the socket there) swing out to 30 degrees or so, to put it in the right place. Excellent. Thanks for making this vid...

Thanks for the video. It saved my neighbor a lot of money. Tried the Sharpie - maybe I didn't first push it in hard enough. The wooden spoon did the trick. Problem is that the device swings back in if you remove the old cartridge before swinging it out all the way. Thanks again.

Allow me to be the latest to thank you for solving our problem. The water spout actually began squirting about a cup of water inside the fridge once every 30 minutes or so. You rock!
this fixed it, thanks so much! for anyone confused, you have to stick the spoon handle IN where the nozzle goes (so it's impossible to fully demonstrate with a filter in).

Thank you! I had changed the filter twice before with no problem, but this time it would NOT fit in when I pushed. I used the wooden spoon handle and shifted the housing ever so slightly to the right -- and BAM -- in it went - no more problems. I add my thanks to those I saw here (which convinced me to try it).

You got me on the right track, but I couldn’t figure out exactly what you meant. So….to help further, you’ll know it’s not going to work if the gray and white parts of the hinge/housing aren’t properly aligned. Push the inner white part, using the end of the spoon, to meet up with the gray part. The end of a sharpie works well also…. THANK YOU!

I was just on the verge of calling for a repair when I saw your video, and I had done just that-- gotten the old filter out before it was completely open. Exactly what I needed. I suspected the housing was out of alignment, used a sharpie marker because all my wooden spoons are flat-handled for some reason. Many thanks!
I tried a silicone coated spoon, a metal flatware spoon, and FINALLY located a wooden spoon with a half inch or 5/8 inch diameter. It went in like butter, was able to turn the housing out. Pushed in the filter. Voila! Thank you so much. Now, I know to clear the stuff at the top of the refrigerator so I can open the filter to the 45 degree angle.

You were spot on! I did in fact, remove the filter before it was all the way to the right. Bless you for making this video, you have saved many of us $$.
