I know I can speak Spanish a little bit but I don’t feel confident sometimes. When I talk to my girlfriend in Spanish I am fine but when I’m talking to someone else (ex: her dad or any other native speaker) it’s like my brain freezes and I cannot remember anything smh. I hate making mistakes too. So, that makes it worse. I gotta stop being so hard on myself lol🤦🏽♂️

I know this is a bit dated and you could be completely comfortable speaking Spanish now. However, and this took me some time to truly appreciate, remember that when it comes to progressing it can never happen without first making mistakes. So the more mistakes you make and learn from the faster it’ll be that you get better and that’s with pretty much anything in life!
A trick: (which may work well for people closer to you). Before you start talking to someone, what if you mention you are learning their beautiful language that you fell in love with... Let them know you aren't fluent... yet. and may be a little slower at speaking/responding.
This may help set the stage and expectations and help reduce the feeling to need to be perfect.
Imagine someone approaching you with "I love English and want to learn your language"... wouldn't you feel honoured that they value our language? wouldn't you offer grace if they are a little slower responding (or saying the wrong things... example: if you are a male and they point and say "she looks nice" in reference to you... would you take offence if it were an honest mistake?
I doubt they would. (in fact, it may open the doors for them to correct errors and say: "actually she is the word a girl. he is the word for a boy" and they'd learn to speak better english).

Here I am 30 years old and I am still learning Spanish at home with zero native speakers around for validation. In my twenties, I doubted myself, gave up, and then got back in the game with full throttle force. I use flash cards to cement the words my brain before bedtime. I study words in categories. I listen to Celia Cruz and Mark Anthony at night. I acquire new words from the dictionary and from my slang books. Watching novelas has been a struggle because I am a perfectionist. For now, I am going to focus on vocabulary and small talk. My philosophy is to have fun with it. One day, I will be able to talk fluently with Spanish speakers.
Guess what? I did the same thing...and now I am studying Spanish at age 70. I took two years in high school, and two years in college and was one semester from getting a minor in Spanish. Then life happened. I never got back to it. Retired now, I have the time, but without someone to speak with it is going slow. I know I will get close, I am way ahead of where I was a year ago. Mostly watching YT vids, reading and writing. However I end up, I am doing something I love.
Same thing happened to me. Thankfully my husband is Mexican. I should be so farther in my Spanish level. Can you recommend any good telenovela to watch. Good luck y Dios te bendiga!!
My mistake was that I doubted or questioned myself because I didn't want to make mistakes when speaking the language...
I've since gotten better, with the help and advice from your vids and others...
So I tell ppl not to worry about making grammatical mistakes or saying the wrong things, and just speak...

I'm self-taught and I learned Spanish because I'm obsessed with all things Spanish (i.e. language, food, culture, music, people etc.). This helps a great deal when you're trying to learn a new language. Your obsession to get it, is what helps you to keep going when you don't want to keep going. I said all that just to say I agree with you. LOL!! Thank you for your videos.

A mí yo también. I have a few people in my circle who are bilingual and every time I try to engage with them in Spanish (i.e. after I’ve told them my goal to learn and get help) it always somehow ends up them just talking in English. I don’t know if it makes them uncomfortable or if it’s just because with them being bilingual it’s difficult switching gears sometimes? I don’t know. It has frustrated and discouraged me a little, but I’m not letting that stop me. I’m fully determined and that’s what’s important. Keep up the good work, and don’t give up. In my experience so far I’ve seen that determination and motivation is key not only when it comes to learning a new language , but with life in general . And if you really love Spanish you’ll learn :)
Find tutors/language partners online.
Join this app called HelloTalk. There's hundreds, if not thousands of Spanish speakers on there willing to help you. I will say that many people will ignore your profile information and you will receive the same questions over and over (how old are you, where are you from, why are you learning Spanish, how is your Spanish, how's your learning going, etc,) but I honestly delete those messages and carry on until I find someone interesting to talk to. Just last night, I messaged someone from the Dominican Rep. because I noticed he had tattoos and I've noticed not many people from that country are tatted up. We ended up exchanging numbers and talked for about an hour on WhatsApp. Thought I didn't practice my speaking much, he got to practice his speaking and listening so it worked out for one of us, lol. Buy seriously, it's a great app with a lot of people who are willing to help you. There's also Tandem but I prefer HelloTalk because I receive a lot of messages on there so it's easier to find language partners. Tandem, not so much....

Que lo que began being used by Dominicans when they learned about how people in Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire say What's up in Papiamento. In Papiamento it is: Kiko ta kiko (What's up) and hence if you translate that to spanish it is Que lo que (what's up).
Awesome video. I learned a great lesson about using Google Translate. 2 guys from Mexico came to the store where I work and was trying to ask the cashier about an item. Well they everyone was struggling. I didn’t know much Spanish at the time, and I typed a sentence in Google Translate gave it to one of the men to read, and one man told me in Spanish he didn’t understand. So we all stood there lost.

honesty my one biggest tip: speak. speak as soon as you can. speak as much as you can. it helps a lot even at a low level
I agree with all of these but I have a different take on the focusing too much on how long it will take. I see a lot of people asking if they can become fluent in 3 months, 6 months, or a year. They heard about someone else saying they did it that quick and start looking for real people who’ve done it. I started watching a bunch of UA-cam polyglots and noticed they would say it took them 5 years, 7 years, or 10 years. Once I latched onto those bigger numbers it was freeing. I quit stressing about getting fluent fast and decided I won’t allow myself to get too frustrated about not being fluent yet till I reach the 7 year mark. So while I agree it’s not helpful to focus on such a low number I think focusing on a bigger, more realistic number is helpful (as long as you’re doing things to get you closer to your goal every day).

I think that you can learn a lot quickly, but too many people lie and say that they are fluent in a year and give people false hope. I think if people can be relaxed and take it easy like you, then they will fare well.
Estoy en acuerdo 100%. Cuando estoy aprendiendo un idioma, me gusta mucho crear mi propios metodes para aprender y estudiar. Los maestros dan herramiente. Y yo necesito usarlos. Yo hablé español a mi trabajo hace 20 años. Yo olvidé mucho, pero recientemente, comprí un libro en español. No es un textbooko (jaja...no sé la palabra). Es una historia. Se llama "Wonder: La Lección De August" escrito por R.J. Palacio. Había escrito en inglés primero, y luego became una película.

I am learning Spanish at home. I have dvd, audio , 501 verbs , I even have a cassette course, I memorize , write, and I find myself speaking without thinking in English. also tried Rosetta stone.

I use a translator when sending a message. It wasn’t to impress the instructor but to practice reading and listening to what I was trying to say. But I understand what you said. I will ask my instructor their thoughts on it. Thank you
Im all over the place in what I’m teaching myself in a week, I have no structure and I worry when I speak and I’m constantly translating in my head
I use the translator to translate words I want to know. I get frustrated because it seems that a lot of conversations I find online are about things I don't care about. A conversation about bull fighting? WTF, I'm never going to use this! Now I use the conversations to pick out words to grow my ever expanding flash card stack. Thanks for the video.

You are a great practical teacher. Took it 2yrs in school and gave up cuz the same stuff you talking about . I know people who don't use it lose it. My granny was a native speaker but she said she forgot it she didn't use so long. She was elderly tho sooo maybe that had to do with it? Anyway I have attempted false starts in past I honestly said out loud recently I want to. Then you sho in my feed, didn't look for you. I believe God sent you. Thanks for what you do. The most important piece of advice I'd give to someone starting to learn a language is to try to find a way to enjoy the process! You hear that advice about a lot of things but for me when it comes to language learning, that is one of the only areas I find that I really can apply it. I have always simply loved the language and loved practicing what I'm learning regardless of what level I'm at, and before I know it, my language skills are at a level I never knew was possible!
Great video. Very inspiring. I'm guilty of #4...being all over the place. I used to use translators but now I don't when I'm sending a text in Spanish even though I know my grammar is not great haha....If I ever decide to learn another language I think I will focus more on listening and talking before straight out putting majority of focus on reading and writing.
EXCELLENT ADVICE! I was doing ALL of these mistakes. The point about time is SUPER important. Don't listen to people who said they were fluent in a day! So discouraging to compete with that kind of BS.

I loved this video, I have been guilty of the translator app and the self doubt even though native speakers give me props for my effort when I do speak the little that I know smh lol 🤦🏾♀️. I also have strayed away from managing my time better when it comes to my study where I used to have a set time when I would devote time to now I just randomly study and actually don’t retain anything 😔😑 lol. Thanks for this post, it was an eye opener and a check up so I can dust off and level up! 😎👍🏾

But honestly, I feel wrong for learning and speaking Spanish in public because I am not connected to any Latin America country whatsoever. I think I am a culture appropriator or a "wannabe" but I just like communication period, point, blank.
Gregory Williams You should never feel bad for learning or speaking a language. A language doesn’t belong to anyone, and is only the very small tip of the iceberg of culture, and plus, Spanish is connected to hundreds of cultures in Europe, the Americas, and even Africa.
Ughhhh i hate that term culture appropriator... Every culture has taken something from another culture.... That term is just another way of saying "im racist so I'm trying to say that you are racist also just because you embrace another culture... " Never feel bad for wanting to learn anything about anyone or place. The world belongs to every one. You don't have to be connected to anything to learn it. Smh.. The more labels that ignorance creates the more we will be and stay divided... Don't be the one to encourage the divide.
Believe me we Latinos love that other people learn spanish and we also help you, that thing of cultural appropriation was an invention of liberal to cause chaos and division and pursue their political agenda, latinos don't have that victim mentality, those people born in USA from latinos parents can't speak for latinos they only use the latino rhetoric to take advantage of us but a lot of them don't even speak spanish
Honestly if you want to go for it. Id say though if you want to learn about different cultures educate yourself and i mean really gain insight. What i see all the time is that "cultural appropriators" in general they seem kinda ignorant when experiencing different cultures and try to americanize it instead of gaining real insight for what it really is.
Culture appropriation is only applied to culture that are shamed and Latin cultures aren’t shamed, especially in America.. Americans love italians and Hispanics
I can see u feeling that way for speaking an African language where they use their tongue to click and cluck the roof of their mouth; African cultures are frowned upon in America

Good video! Thanks. Even though I have studied other languages in school years ago, Spanish is the first language I have attempted to learn solo. I think the availability of UA-cam videos made me forget the basics of needing structure and learning materials like books, and -duh- taking notes, something I haven’t done, but will!
I usually answer you in Spanish (it's part of MY learning program) but today I will comment in English. The only "time" I focus on is the time I spend per day studying and speaking in Spanish, it's of no relevance to me how long it took you. Take advantage of all resources out there, I listen to bilingual radio, reggaeton and Spanish talk radio. I also listen to stories in Spanish over and over again until I hear how words should sound and it comes to me naturally. I sometimes reverse translate with my translator. Thanks Ricky, you're part of my studies.
I am guilty of the self doubt AND using the translators. There were times I knew how to say a sentence but I would doubt my own knowledge so I would use the translator and of course I was right. I do have a question about the use of the translator though.
Would I be using the translator as a crutch if I to correct myself? For an example I would write a sentence in Spanish, copy it, paste in the translator. If the translator doesn’t translate the sentence the way I want it to I’ll change a few words and do the process over again until I get the desired result.
There have been times I didn’t know how to say something so I used the translator and analyze the sentence to see what makes it correct as oppose to if I had said something different.

Are we going to just ignore the fact that 70+20 is not 100. Not being negative I make those mistakes all the time love the videos they are so fun to watch and i learn alot actually even though I'm learning a different variant of spanish. Keep it up.😀

Thanks for your videos. I appreciate them... I am still shocked that someone who claims to be dedicated to learning this beautiful Spanish language says that if you don't post, they'll quit learning... (I wonder if they are really dedicated to the process to begin with. I have multiple sources I tap into and each source offers a different dynamic to my learning).

Spanish is my native language and though I've never went thru the struggle of having to learn it as an adult there are still times when I speak to someone from a different part of the world and the terms don't click so just to throw in a side rule on your list which is really comprehensive already but I'd say never stop learning even once you've reached fluency... language is a gift as is your mind ..never stop learning

I just started learning Spanish since summer because I love and appreciate the language so much. It’s a very beautiful language and I really like the sound of it especially when native Spanish speakers speak. I have a lot of Dominican Republic friends but they speak so fast, but I love their accent so much. I talk to them in Spanish sometimes, that is, the little I know and they always tell me that I know a lot. But to me, I don’t know a lot because I’m not able to have a long conversation and that is what I’m currently working on. If there are any recommendations that you could give me, I would really appreciate it, my friend. What’s the best Spanish dictionary to use? And where can I get some good resources to teach my self?

@@kemartitus2284 The best is to watch Mexican movies or Spanish TV series in Netflix they have an standard spanish, Dominican speak very badly is very low class, if you concentrate in their spanish you most likely will only understand them and even the well educate Dominican will not understand you also

Once you get to a certain level in a language you can tell if someone is using a translator. It's pretty interesting. They aren't perfect.

Gracias por este video. Uso Google translator todo el tiempo. Sin embargo, siempre estoy usando mis libros para verificar lo que estoy viendo. Translator es muy until, pero ten cuidado porque no es las traducciones no son perfectas cada vez.
Aprendí un poco de español aprendiendo a cantar mis canciones favoritas de las películas de Disney (también usando Google Translate) Pero mi acento no es bueno. ¿Cómo hablaste delante de alguien sin morir de vergüenza al principio?
Nunca tengas vergüenza, porque a nosotros los hispanos parlantes nos gusta cuando alguien le intersa hablar el idioma.

@@flow2528 Muy cierto, los hispanohablantes siempre vamos a ayudar y aconsejar a quienes están aprendiendo nuestro idioma. Nunca nos reiremos o haremos un comentario negativo contra quien que se interesa por nuestra lengua.
I found that living and working in ten different countries for a year at a time that if you can learn at least 100 words in that language you can get by. That said; if you can get a sleeping dictionary like a girlfriend from the country you are in, that speeds things up.

En numero 4, yo uso duolingo por construiendo fondos en espanol, entonces, tambien uso audio resources como libroaudios, podcasts. Creo que duolingo es bueno para aprender estructuras basicas, y tambien una buena aplicacion para aprender espanol

Do you recommend moving to Miami over Orlando or Tampa or would Miami's cost of living knock my socks off? I would like a metro area where I could practice and learn Spanish a lot. I don't want to go back to the 10 roommates to an apartment though. That was rough.

My learning experience in using Espanol was while in Cuba, I asked questions just fine but when the person answered me.... I didn't fully understand what they said. Ha! So I'd just nod and say gracias.

The problem I am running into is trying to learn puerto rican spanish but any translation I look up its for proper spain spanish! How did you find native Dominican spanish?

Hola Ricki, He estado aprendiendo español siete semanas para más entonces cuarto horas todo hoy, he estado Pimsleur, Duolingo, Drops, UA-cam , o mi flash card decks.
Antes hace tres hoy, yo visto una de su vídeos donde te recomiendo un celular de applicación llamo ‘Hello Talk’. Por el last tres hoys Tengo usado lo no alto. Y porque de este Mi tiempo para otra app’s es mal.

Took my sons to a local Peruvian restaurant in the States, and got straight to Spanish speaking with the server. Did I make mistakes, hell yeah, but I learn so much faster in conversation.
