Thank you Rob. You have saved my sanity. The Exposure Comp has been driving me crazy, and I could not find why. I come from full frame Canon going way back!
Update on face and eye tracking. I didn’t have the face and eye AF button set to face priority. You’ll have a job forever solving issues with this Om system😂 Thanks Again
Good video Rob as usual. There are so many ways of setting up these cameras, and it can be very confusing depending on how you assign things. For example, I prefer to have the front dial control exposure compensation and iso, but then I almost always shoot in A mode, so this makes sense. I use the function lever to switch the front dial between iso and exposure comp. I love this setup, and I wish my Nikon cameras allowed this, but they don't. This gives me complete control over the exposure triangle using just the dials. I assign the exposure comp button to turn on or off a computational setting, like ND filter for example. Because I have exposure comp mapped to the front dial, I don't need that button. But with this setup, switching to Manual mode changes things. I no longer have any control over exposure compensation, but then I don't really see any point in using exposure comp in M mode. Oddly enough, in M mode, when I switch the function lever to position 2, iso control switches to the rear dial, and the front dial doesn't seem to do anything. It's just dead. I'm sure if I handed my camera to another OM-1 shooter, they would think the thing was broken. There is definitely a tradeoff between functionality and simplicity I guess. It's no wonder we get confused.
@@RobTrek Hey Rob, i had a few questions, and i wonder hwo i can write to you. you tube has a link for your email but thats for business enquiries? not sure if i should use that email to write to you. Regards.
Amazing, today I had a similar problem with my E-M5 original version on manual mode, AUTO ISO taking photos of waves so sometimes 1/30 sec to get some smooth flowing and sometimes 1/4000 for crispness, f11 always for DOF. The only way I found was to manually set the ISO and use the buttons to get the correct exposure, any thoughts?
That is odd behavior, but auto iso is dependent on many things. Try setting your metering to center weighted. My guess is you're in esp or spot. Also, use aperture priority rather than auto or p modes. Let me know if any of that helps.
Hi Rob, thanks for your informative videos - I am new to OM-1 after winning a camera (having a Nikon before). With the exposure compensation issue you discuss in this video, can you confirm that it only works in Manual mode if you are ISO AUTO? What happens if you want to set ISO as well (or do you have to set your ISO Auto limit if you are concerned about it going too high?) Thanks in anticipation!
QUESTION; I had an Olympus M1 III and I could toggle the focus point and mode from a dynamically assigned position, back to what I had set in the setting for the “home” position. I could do that pressing the ISO button with my right thumb. I can’t figure out how to do that with the OM-1. Do you know of a way?
It looks like they changed it so the HP button only goes to the Home Point and no longer toggles from the last position. I couldn't find any settings to make it do that.
This was great but my problem with exposure is in S mode. I can change the exposure, I see it change, but the actual exposure stays too dark. I can check by going to A or M and get the correct exposure. ???
The live view will only show up to +/- 3 stops of exposure. My guess is you're setting your shutter speed too high. Look at your EV meter and/or ISO. Are either of those blinking when before you take the picture? If so, your exposure will be darker than what you see on the screen or evf.
@@RobTrek Thanks for such a quick reply. Shutter speed is 2000, ISO is 800. Nothing is blinking. I've just reset to your suggestions in your Birds in Flight video. It's raining here, exposure at 0 looks dark, as it is, in the EV and is black in the photo. Exposure at +3 looks washed out and over exposed in the EV but the photo is black. 300 F4 with 1.4 tc on. :( My apologies, the aperture indicator was blinking. I thought Shutter Priority made everything else adjust automatically but no, it doesn't. I have upped ISO, (it's not supposed to do that itself? Even with your bird video settings?) and now photos are not dark. :)
I suppose it can be done. However, adding a sim card would imply you need a monthly service plan. I'm not sure many would be willing to do that. I think updating the OM Share app with more features and reliability would be a better way to go.
It could be. I rarely used the tracking to get a feel for if there was any improvement in 1.3. Of course, it's too late now to compare as I've already updated.

I knew others would probably be experiencing the same thing. Glad this helped you too!
RE : Exposure compensation in Manuel mode was driving me crazy.
Thanks a million for solving the problem 👍
Glad it helped!
Thank you Rob that is very helpful. I will try your suggestions. Why an exposure compensation button can’t just be that I’ll never know.
Glad this helped. I agree, it should just do one thing.
Me too! Sometimes clever things go beyond useful and just get complicated for no good reason. This is one of those IMO.😊

Excellent deductions Sherlock!

Hi Jon, I made a video to show you how to get the front dial to work. ua-cam.com/video/7qWhl3GIajE/v-deo.html
Thanks for the advice. But the exposure compensation is only in the + region and dose not allow me to have a -ve compensation.
Thank you for the excellent video Rob. Hope your new year has started with a bang.
Thanks, Druid!

Yes, Auto-ISO is required to be on if you want exposure compensation in Manual mode. You will have to set the ISO Auto Limit. -Rob

@@yinngsunga4081 Set your ISO to AutoISO. That should fix it. When aperture is blinking, the camera is not getting enough light.

Maybe the 1.3 firmware improved the tracking mode? The release notes were not very detailed 😔
