Totally agree about the convertible - great with the roof down, not so much with it up. Those headlights do put me off though, it just doesn't as classy as a car that special should - the 997 has to be the sweet spot for the 911 on that basis. A 991 C2S makes a great daily I reckon, although personally I don't think it would feel like a step up from the Cayman since it's got basically the same interior and isn't much more refined.
Just discovered your channel. So refreshing and different to others. Love the lack of BS and free filming. I always liked the idea of a cut price older Porsche but its the repair and maintenance costs that scare the crap out of me.
Much appreciated! The engine in these is much more reliable than the standard engines you find in 996s which is a positive, but yes as always if something does go wrong they won’t be cheap - I think one of these 2 recently had a new gearbox which wasn’t cheap!
Hi there JB I was researching the 996 Turbo deciding whether I wanted to buy one from Motorland. By sheer coincidence this video came up, and there you are driving the very same car I've just put my money - albeit a month ago! You kind of sealed the deal really having given it (and the cab) Such a good review. So I kind of owe you a debt of thanks having been influential in the purchase of my first 911 Turbo! Cheers Edd
That's amazing! I love the spec on it, really cool to get one with so much carbon, and so great to drive. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, wish you all the best!
I am a Porsche fan (who isn't with oil in their body instead of blood?🤣) and i bought a 997 c2s at the end of 2022... Absolutely love it! The 997 really is much better looking... And feels much younger too (interior wise etc...). I am sure the 996 turbo is a fab car to drive but i couldn't live with these fried eggs lights... I just could not 🥴. My best mate has the 997 turbo 1.5 gen and my god it's fast 😳... But it's pricier...
I'm a Porsche purist. I'm really upset about the headlight shape. And I'm really upset they no longer have the original 2.0L air cooled engines 😂 Seriously though silver 996 turbos look stunning. I want one. Love your channel. Your enthusiasm, your knowledge & no cheesy background music 😉 I just bought an R231 SL500. Can't believe the level of performance & comfort. Have you can reviewed that range of cars yet ?
Years ago, even before Top Gear was the cultural icon it became, I wanted to be a motoring journalist, travelling the world to drive cars. I do wish I'd followed through with that.
I chose coupé! You mention about the potholes. I thought it was just me being fussy but yes, they say Porsche is an everyday car however I find the 996 Turbo tiring to drive... even with an auto box. Speaking of the gearbox, once you work out how to use it, it's pretty decent if you don't want manual (I prefer auto because I bust my arse in the gym so cba with changing gears on the way home plus I always get stuck in London traffic). I note how you went quiet when you accelerated. 🤣 My gf does the opposite and screams when I accelerate hard. Oh, I found it revved a bit high, too - I think this is because you only have 5 gears on the auto and those 5 gears take you from 0 to 190mph. 🤣
Haha I’m glad it’s not just me that felt that! It’s a lovely car but maybe not for a long drive from my perspective, more one to absolutely bash around in on the weekends and love for the appreciating classic it is 🤙🏽
My, I’m glad I just happen to literally stumble on your channel, but I’ve been seriously interested in purchasing a Porsche. Initially, it was a modest choice that wouldn’t break the budget. However, budget is relatively personal, and depends how much you’re willing to part with at the end of the month. The Boxster S was my 1st interest, but as I started dividing in to world of Porsche, and your advice on what’s more reliable, you may have steered me towards the 4 seater Carrera look alike, the Panamera. Any year preferences that you may like over the other?
Boxster S - assuming we’re talking about the 987 generation, known of course for bore scoring and the bearing failures, you can actually get examples that have had the bearings strengthened and have a bore checked with a little camera to see if there’s any bore scoring, so if you can get evidence of those 2 things there’s much less to be afraid of! Re the Panamera, the V8s can suffer bore wear (particularly the turbos) with higher mileage, outside of that it’s checking the common stuff like engine oil levels, timing chain ticking noise, etc - PDK as well can leak oil - but as with all cars it’s hard to really know unless you get a proper inspection done - Porsche dealers actually offer this service as like a 100+ point mechanical check for not too much money!
Porsche enthusiasts (I am one) are easily manipulated. If Porsche had made a limited addition ‘GT1’ spec 996 and then released the new headlight design top down, instead of releasing it simultaneously with the Boxster, Porsche Enthusiasts would have been clamoring for it rather than balking.
JB the older ones you drive the car, newer ones the car drives you, the older ones are where you wanna be, and you get used to it when you drive them more
My 996.2 has plastic covers looks like a 997. Cabriolet is the way to go flat 6 roof down best sound ever. Stop stigmatating M96 engines they rock just spoil 3K oil changes and stop worrying about ims bs, drive frequently and you are livin it!
Too young to know how to drive “old school”. There a simple car to drive, just drive it properly, manual or auto both work. They eat miles. Buy one now, they are only going one way on price! Buy more than one I have.

how did it turn out?
Great old school cars the best in my opinion
Fantastic video 2 wonderful Porches from my era of mid teenage years.

The fried egg was on the 3.4 996.1 and the Boxster.
I have one. Great car.
Great video, thank you. I would be really interested in the both the 997 and 991 turbo s as well.
Great video. Interesting, well produced and different.
Nice job!

Keep both your hands on the wheel. Don't try to look like gangster - it's a powerful car, be safe and in control.
best looking generation of porsche imo
Years ago, even before Top Gear was the cultural icon it became, I wanted to be a motoring journalist, travelling the world to drive cars. I do wish I'd followed through with that.
996 turbo, great car, only if manual
I chose coupé!

One word - mezger.

Fair point very well made!
Saving for a 981 cayman. Hopefully start my search soon this year. Was looking at the 997 turbo S but thats way out of budget 😂
JB the older ones you drive the car, newer ones the car drives you, the older ones are where you wanna be, and you get used to it when you drive them more
nice change bro. like it

Hi jb cracking vid mate
I’m gonna sell my C4s and e46 m3 to purchase one 😊 hopefully before Christmas.
Just subscribed
I have a 996 Turbo the suspension needs work, mine is actually comfortable around town
I love these reviews, much better than your top 5 or 10 countdowns for a price bracket.
You lost me when I saw the tiptronic transmission.
The Turbo 996 does'nt suffer from Ims Bearing fault?
Only the Carreras suffered from IMS bearing problems
I'd sooner have no mod safety systems, makes better drivers.
Get in a manual, then you will see that it can be used as a daily driver !
Try living in Australia. Cheapest 996 turbo &100k
Savage! We are lucky here
They will be 100k here soon too
@@bluesmoke8826I think we’ll see them go to £70k in the next few years for sure.
Comparing a 996 with a 992? Hehe
Too young to know how to drive “old school”. There a simple car to drive, just drive it properly, manual or auto both work. They eat miles. Buy one now, they are only going one way on price! Buy more than one I have.
Man newer cars have ruined the true drivers experience 😂
There’s no such thing as a cheap Porsche. If you’re doing it properly, you’ll need to budget some coin to sort it out.
Such poor steering wheel control from presenter not to mention looking where he is going. Should be sent on an advanced driving course!
