So I have the cable but when I connect it to my PC/Laptop, Windows and Express doesn't recognize the unit which is the 2597. Was able to update my map earlier this year but no can do today?
No. The 1080 uses Garmin charger 010-12982-05 which is 12/24V 2.3A (Amazon affiliated link here if you need one) amzn.to/3WKS5IQ, which is more power draw than what USB 2.0 can provide.
If you use one of those power plugs like I show in this video ua-cam.com/video/vFgqZAgUOjw/v-deo.html where one port is labeled 1.0 and the other is 2.1, use 2.1 and that should power the DS65 without a problem provided you use the USB power cable shown in this video. A regular computer USB cable won't work.
the challenge I have is that if I use a regular usb-A to mini USB for my Garmin Drive Smart 65, i only get 40% screen brightness ... you think this cable will power it to full 100% brightness?
If the USB-A port is a 2.1A then the cable should power the DS65 properly. I show this in this other video I made ua-cam.com/video/vFgqZAgUOjw/v-deo.html Older Garmins can be powered by a 1.0 but the DS65 needs a 2.1. Unless your USB port is really old, it should be a 2.1. If you're not sure if it's 2.1 or not, then you'll need a USB voltmeter to check the power output amzn.to/454QktE (Amazon affiliated link)
That either means a) you don't have a model with a built-in traffic receiver as shown here 0:58 or b) you have not updated your traffic provider list via Garmin Express for your specific model (assuming it has a built-in traffic receiver) and/or c) you are not in an area that has traffic coverage as shown here coverage.here.com/rds-coverage.html
*Get this cable here* amzn.to/3K1wEhY (Amazon affiliated link) Remember that this is for POWER ONLY and not for data transfer.
just learned 3 things i was looking for in a few of your videos, thankyou

awesome find, question, how much power does the DriveSmart 65 need to power it with this cable via a usb A?

I seen my answer in the other comments lol thanks for responding. I'm up and running!
Will this work for a Garmin nuvi 1450? I didn't see this model listed in the cable specs.
Yes it will power a 1450. One of the compatible models listed is the 1490, and the 1450 is of the same generation.
Wonder if this would work on my Drive Smart 52MT... hmmm...
