    Hmmm, you know when dogs get puzzled and they rotate their heads sideways? Maybe they have polarized lenses 😂. Polarized lenses are good at rivers, lakes, streams and the beach. They allow you to see into the water so much better. Can have an issue with some matte screen GPS’s though.

      Matte screen use on the water would hardly be visible. Better to use a modern Garmin chartplotter on the boat that has an IPS display www.garmin.com/en-US/garmin-technology/marine-technology/chartplotters/display-technology/

    Checking back on this. Does your DriveSmart 66 experience any lags/delays while navigating the menu? Mine does and I don't know why. When a tap some buttons sometimes it will take about 1 second for the unit to respond. I tried to reproduce this isssue on my DriveSmart 65 and the 65 was more responsive than the 66.

    • @sat103

      @@sat103 Tried that and didn't work. I forgot to mention that this is my second Drivesmart 66. First one the screen was damaged because I put it in a tight bag. Both were refurbished. Do you have the same issue on your 66? It happens every 11 to 14 seconds where the unit will freeze for 1 to 2 seconds and "unfreeze." If you're navigating, the map will freeze for a few seconds and then unfreeze. Also happens when you are navigating the menu for example when you are scrolling through a list of settings, the unit will freeze for one to two seconds and then unfreeze. Hopefully Garmin will fix this in a firmware update. I tried reinstalling the map but that didn't help. Tried disabling other map features like the 3D and Foursquare but those didn't help either.

      @@BryanzHAn03 I don't have any issues like that on either of my two DS66's (one bought new, one refurb). The only things I could think to do in a situation like that is delete all Favorites, clear the Trip log from Settings > Device > Reset > Clear Travel History, clear the GPX folder in case a log corrupted for whatever reason, reset the nonvolatile RAM from Diagnostics Page > Developer Info > Memory > Nonvol Statistics > hamburger menu > Clear Nonvol (erases all settings and resets the unit). And if there is a memory card present, I'd pull that in case that started to go bad.

    Like the Up Ahead and Along My Route features. In the past was frustrated on long trips when say I searched for gas and it would show them from 10 miles back from where I just was. Yeah, I’m not going back for that. Up Ahead and Along My Route make that so much better. Still wish I could set distance parameters from the gps on Along My Route, like you can with custom poi’s and the poi loader.

    I used a regular mini usb plug into my Garmin 54LM. It powered on OK, but it would not find sats. Soon as i plugged in the official Garmin 12v car plug it worked fine. Is that a common problem? Great use case and would not have thought of that…..I’m going to try it out. Really is great in very familiar trips where you already know where you’re going. It allows you to overcome your selective perception and explore. Selective perception…..it’s said we only pick up on a small amount of things that are going on around us at a given time. May be as little as 5-10%. One of the best examples of this is if you are shopping for a new car. Before doing so you likely didn’t see many of that particular model car on the road. While shopping all of a sudden you see that car a LOT on the roadways. The same amount of that model car was always there. Now while shopping for it, you selectively perceive it and see more of them on the roadways. We tend to have a narrow band of what we focus on. This can expand that band.

    Thanks. Great video and like the editing where you switch from the Nuvi to the Drive. I’m guessing the difference noted between the nuvis and Drive/DriveSmarts, etc., is due to processing power. The same demarcation exists in those units in the Up Ahead feature. In the nuvi’s you see just the icons for gas stations, banks, and restaurants. If you want details you have to touch the icon. In the Drives/DriveSmarts and forward, you see the actual name of the establishments in each of the three categories…..and it dynamically updates as you drive. It’s a quick update too….literally as soon as you pass the exit where a gas station was listed, it shows the next closest gas station. As mentioned previously I REALLY like that feature on long trips in unfamiliar territory. By seeing the name of the upcoming restaurant it may help gauge how rural the next area is. I recall seeing an upcoming Cracker Barrel in an area where I would have expected something like Cleets hot dog stand.

    • @sat103
      @sat103 8 днів тому

      I-49 Louisiana is a good example of that. There are parts that are a whole lot of nothing for long stretches with some interesting restaurant names along the way that are obviously local-only.

    Thanks! Good info to know. Was playing around with it and oddly it didn’t do a good job finding Costco’s along the route. It DID find things where those letters were in sequence such as “Cost containment co” or similar. So search seems different in this way versus just searching “where to” on normal startup screen. Makes me wonder what the distance parameters are for “along my route”. Based on above I believe it has to be VERY close to route. Years ago before before GPS’s got much better at searching with the advent of things like Foursquare, I used to add custom poi’s ( points of interest) for things like Costco, Walmart, etc. It was then possible to set a proximity alert and choose the distance. So, if you were driving and within say 2 miles of a Walmart the gps would notify you and you could choose to go there. Funny, I’m remembering one I had setup for Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives ( aka Triple D) and with that I used a further proximity alert as they are not as common. Fun thing to have on a road trip and I may set those up again. What’s old may become new again 😀 Would be nice if you could choose your own distance of what along my route means.

    • @sat103
      @sat103 11 днів тому

      You technically can choose a distance along a route somewhat. If you tap "My Route" after tapping an Up Ahead category, two other options are "My Destination" and "Upcoming Exits". My Route searches near where you are, Upcoming Exits searches close to highway exits, My Destination searches near the end of the route. These same search options are in the DS66 except My Route is replaced with a pin icon to the left of the search field. Edit: You can try this for Costco - while the route is active, go back to Where To? > Categories, tap the black location box (right of the search field on older models, left of search field on DS66), change to My Active Route, then Categories > Shopping > All Shopping and search Costco there. That may give better results.

    • @mariannelanger7423
      @mariannelanger7423 11 днів тому

      Thanks …..good info to know. I’ve been simulating on a DriveSmart 51. I don’t see the My Route options or the pin icon in Up Ahead. While playing around with it I did see the pin icon in the regular ( not up ahead) search box. That normally shows search near My Current Location but by hitting the pin you can switch to Upcoming Exits or My Destination. I would never have known that without your info. I tried the suggestion for Costco and had the same result. Must be that a Costco is too far from the route. Meanwhile if I use google maps and search for Costco near the destination I see one and it’s slightly off route. You could easily add Costco as a stop and I estimate it would add about 5 minutes to the route. IMHO, it would be nice if selecting a max proximity were an option. I’m likely to continue my old ways….use google maps to search and then enter that in the Garmin. Not ideal but faster than other method. I may also look into the poi databases and creating proximity alerts again. Do appreciate your videos. For anything other than basic searching the Garmins are not overly intuitive and your videos provide good information

    Thanks! Good info to know. It’s also why I prefer “Up Ahead” showing versus the turns list. I like the quick ability to see what’s coming up. I do understand where the turns list is useful as well, especially in places where you may have to make several quick turns. I like seeing all of the gas stations listed along the route. Makes it easy to locate a favorite gas station brand. Some gas stations have good eats 😅. I’m guessing there might be a way to specifically show only your favorite brand gas stations along the route. Let’s use grocery stores as an example…how would you show all Publix stations along the route?

    • @sat103
      @sat103 14 днів тому

      I believe the search field at 3:32 when the gas station list is displayed will allow to search for your preferred store. Publix stores (or any other store name) would most likely be available from an Up Ahead "Custom Search", although I'm not certain how well that would work on long trips. Edit: Yes, an Up Ahead Custom Search works. Tried it using the 2497 on a very long test route from TX to FL and it did find the nearest Publix on route. It was over 400 miles away but it found it. imgur.com/a/79r5uJv

      Thank you for outlining the main steps of the process. I followed the same steps on the 86 (slightly different interface but same functionality though) and found that although I can add gas stations along my hypothetical 350-mile route, there appears to be a limit on the number of stations the software can actually display. In fact, it shows 50 stations - (and it seems that this is the max number allowed per search) and they are all clustered near the starting point (I wish the software could spread out 54 Gas Stations results over the 350 miles route highlighting for example only major Gas Station/Or better Service Areas which would be way more than enough to choose from). The area where the route starts is densely populated, with hundreds of gas stations within a few miles. Some locations listed by Garmin as gas stations are actually not, and they are not very close to the route anyway. I have tried other ways to add gas stations along the route but the options are either at the beginning or to the end (nothing in between). My main objective is to be able to create long routes and add Gas Stations or Service Areas stops ahead of time and before beginning the trip. I may need to experiment with customized categories, something you have covered in an excellent video-to define a list of gas stations and service areas along the route and apply it to the active route (not sure if it is possible). I will share my findings.

Tap map outside of vehicle icon, magnifying glass icon, gas station icon. When the map is still (as in when not moving it around), blue dots will appear for gas stations present along the route. 4. Follow your route until you see a gas station where you want to stop, touch the blue dot representing it, then Go!, then Add to Active Route. 5. On next screen select the position in your route where you want the stop to be, then Save, then No to not simulate. 6. Repeat process until the route is the way you want. 7. While route is still in effect: Apps, Route Planner, My Active Route, Save, name it. Done.

      Yes I have had Garmin models where the SD slot stopped working. If it is not a mechanical failure (like the spring giving out on a click-in slot), it can usually be fixed with a small spray of DeoxIT D5. This is assuming the contacts on the microSD card have not tarnished and do not have physical damage like crinkling or peeling.

    Haven’t watched all of this yet and you may have touched upon this in another video. Easiest way ( to me) to add favorites to a new or used Garmin is to connect gps to computer and go into Garmin Express. Add new device to Garmin Express. Going from memory here so may be a little off…. On the bottom left hand side click on TOOLS and when that opens click UTILITIES. Scroll down and it will say COPY FAVORITES from and to. Choose the Garmin that has all of your favorites as the from, and the new to you and currently connected to computer Garmin, as the to. Click OK or Transfer and voila the favorites are now on the new to you Garmin.

    After watching your newer release video on the 2699lmthd, I decided to break out my 2599lmthd and use it again on some drives. You are right, it is lightning fast in route calculations! Almost shockingly so. Definitely a plus there. An area for improvement is in the traffic display. I was using the “up ahead” traffic feature and it was showing no traffic. After getting caught in traffic a few times I I went to settings and traffic and noticed it was searching for a provider. So it was not receiving traffic signals yet it was telling me “no traffic along my route”. That’s definitely frustrating. It should have a different signal, symbol, or message when it’s not receiving traffic rather than telling you there’s no traffic. I live in an area that has both regular and hd traffic coverage. At some point I also went into Apps and traffic. In one of the screens it was showing “searching for update”. So it’s likely I had updated the software and it was searching for the update on traffic while being connected to satellite. That was after quite a long drive already so it didn’t make sense…..would have thought it would have updated prior. Please don’t tell me there’s no traffic while I’m sitting in bumper to bumper traffic numerous times. I’d much rather have a message “ no traffic signal being received” or “ working on getting traffic signal “. I’m with you that I liked that traffic symbol in an older version where it showed either the green, yellow, or red ring around the round traffic cars symbol depending if there was no traffic, some traffic, or serious traffic on the route. Perhaps something like that with an X through the cars meaning no traffic signal received. Still, it’s lightning fast. Now that’s it’s traffic is updated MAYBE it’s better. Definitely a good backup gps.

    • @sat103
      @sat103 22 дні тому

      Generally speaking, it's a good idea to run any traffic-capable Garmin model through Garmin Express every 6 months. Sometimes there is a traffic update that is totally separate from a map update. This update is a refreshed hidden list of FM/HD frequencies the Garmin searches through locally for over-the-air traffic updates. If this list isn't updated periodically and a frequency goes dark for whatever reason, the Garmin doesn't know that until the list is updated and will do the "searching for traffic" forever because it thinks certain frequencies are still live when they're not.

      Nevermind, I added the maps in the program files x86, and should have in program data / garmin.

    I totally agree... its not the easiest GPS to drive. I fly aircraft that have complex functions, that are easier to work than this Garmin drive 61 I am using. All I want to do is find a page with all my waypoints or town/city routes showing together, but wow its hard. As yet its non existent. The last gps I had in my car was called Navigator or Navcom or something like that, but it was super easy to drive. It seems to me the designers , of Garmin drive really have little experience on the practical side. I always maintain if you want a good designer, use one who has actually worked in the field on such things. But as you say bro.... this one is better than nothing.

    So would you say from a traffic standpoint that this is equivalent to using both a GTM 36 and a GTM 60 at the same time?

    • @sat103
      @sat103 Місяць тому

      It would be more accurate to say it's the same as using just a GTM60. The GTM60 uses whatever signal is available. If HD is available, it will use it. If not, it falls back to RDS and tries using that. The 2699 does the same thing. Tries HD first, and if unavailable falls back to RDS.

      Ahhh, thank you for quick response and detail. I did watch the video when you bought a GTM 36 and reasons behind it versus the GTM 60. I’m in a coverage territory where the HD covers. Was using a GTM 60 for a while and it was having troubles where it wasn’t picking up signals. Yes, I updated its firmware thru the GPS and still had issues. I’ve since switched to the GTM 36 and it seems to be working a lot better. Certainly not perfect, but better. Have a couple models with HD built in…..may try those for a while as a test. Many years ago on about a 2-3 hour mainly highway trip I tested the Garmin HD traffic versus Waze. There was one incident and they both picked up at roughly the same time and routed me around the same way.

    Yes, I was correct that this is 1 of only 2 6-inch models with HD traffic. The other is the DS60LMTHD, which does exist. Regular RDS traffic coverage map: coverage.here.com/rds-coverage.html HD traffic coverage map: coverage.here.com/hd-coverage.html

      @@mariannelanger7423 Yes, this is true, it is LMTHD. It has a 6.1" display but a rather chunky 1.3" depth with the camera. I believe it operates mostly the same as the 2699.

    Do any newer models work under heated and solar attenuated windshields?? My drive smart 61 will NOT get any satellites under this windshield!

    • @sat103
      @sat103 Місяць тому

      Unlikely. Solar attenuated windshields are known to block signals not only from GPS but radar detectors as well, and just play hell with electronics in general. www.rangerovers.net/threads/solar-attenuating-windshield-and-valentine-1.204017/
