I was able to use a small razor knife and strip back the outer casing and just clip the green and white cables. It works and is much easier.

Thanks Dino. I use a Garmin Zumo 660 and use a plug in USB charger on my DR 650. No issues - (maybe internally wired differently). Your information is very useful however as people can use their Garmin Nuvi from their car on their motorcycle. The Garmin Zumo is quite expensive relative to the Nuvi - your info gives riders options to use an existing sat nav and not need to purchase a second one for the motorcycle. Good!

Thank you for the feedback, the nuvi is maybe not the best option but as you point out it is an option many people already have. Thanks again for the comment I always enjoy the feedback you give.

    Hi Deno and J.D.
As an update, I have a Garmin dash cam 66w, works well. It was supplied with the 12v converter to 5v USB lead and plug, and what appears to be a standard USB lead, which is for connecting to a PC, to download videos and for charging.
I formed the impression, that if I used this lead to connect to a USB socket, the device would switch into PC mode. However I thought I should check, so I connected the ‘USB’ lead to a charger and it worked fine🤗.
I raised the question with Garmin tech support, and my requirement for a ‘short’ lead, and they are sending me one FOC. I consider this to be excellent service.
So as far as my dash cam is concerned, it appears that it will work with a USB cable plugged into a USB socket, and anybody else with a 66w should also be OK.
    Thanks for your help.
    Cheers Noel

I would assume that using a Data-Block USB Adapter would be just as effective and much easier to do. The data-blocker adapter effectively disables / disconnects the data wires. Have you tried these as an alternative?

Very cool! We have an electric guitar to solder and it's neat to see how it's done.

I have a Garmin Montana 610 that I use on my motorcycle. In the settings I set it to start in "Spanner" mode instead of "Serial" mode. Spanner allows it to run in GPS normal mode off any USB cable rather than looking for a PC connection. I accidently reset it and noticed it started up in serial mode on my bike, and I could not get it to go into the GPS screens. I ended up here looking for a solution, but after tinkering with my settings I found the startup mode. I knew this setting but forgot it as I have not ridden my bike in a couple of years. Be careful if you click Reset as it will default to Serial mode.

Thank you for that tidbit, it is annoying how it wants to find a PC. I'll do just that

Very good video. However, my Garmin 67 keeps telling me "The attached cable cannot currently charge your device." even with a Garmin cigarette lighter cable connected to the female 12v on my bike. Have you ever come across that message?
    Cheers.

Question: Indeed, to make mine work, I found that I had to connect the two data wires at the mini end as Dino did in this video. It now works, but I wonder if there could be long-term consequences. Perhaps there is a resistor value that could be inserted between the white and green rather than a direct shunt. Would anyone with knowledge on such matters have any thoughts on that? Regardless, thanks for the hack!

Great info, Hopefully my ‘new to me’ zumo doesn’t do that, but if it does let’s mod a cable for my sled. Great video!

Merry Christmas Dino…..have you tried connecting all of your devices through SAE plugs? One style of plug. Very rugged and reliable and able to be connected to multiple devices through one plug. When I’m updating my electrical system I plan to install 3 of them on my bike. One for the tank bag, one for devices like GPS and one for a tire pump. I’m going to add a proper bus bar to keep things organized.
On another note. I’m going to be making a mount for aux driving lights. A copy of an existing overpriced bracket, and sell them cheap to those interested. I also have a 7 inch headlamp bucket and will swap out the original headlight for the bucket if the LED lamp I purchased doesn’t work out for me. Some of the things Suzuki does make me scratch my head. I’m always wanting to make my bikes unique and safer.
    Have a great week-end.

Hi Bill, great comment and a merry Christmas to you as well. I do have two SAE plugs on my bike, one for a trickle charger and the other for the rear box. you are correct about the robustness. I actually have the cyclops bulb in my DR and compared to stock I find it to be an improvement for sure. I have a video planned to compare the two as Karl wants one in his bike as well. I have had other cheaper LED lights in my snowmobiles and although they did through a lot more light as the cyclops does, they tended not to last in the hi vibration environment of the sleds. SO far the cyclops is working very well for me.
Interesting about the aux light bracket would like to see a picture once you have it done.

    Hi Deno and J.D
In the USB cable there are only 4 wires red, white, green, and black. As described by Dino. Is it possible to connect a 17.3k resistor between two of the wires, and if so which, I suspect it will be between the red and the black, to drop the 5v slightly and this will prevent the device going into sync mode.
In addition will this work with a Garmin 66W dash cam, I suspect it will.
    Many thanks Noel

@davidovitchdevlinski1000 He connected the green to white on the GPS side of the cable. Green/White on the power side are just cut. If you cut the whole cable as he did, then reconnect the red/red and black/black so they are back to original.

Can you just open the sheathing slightly and clip a section out of the green and white?

For the old Garmin GPS, the trick is to add a resistor about 17.3k between Pin4 and Pin5 (ground).

You mention 17.3K between pins 4 and 5. I’m wondering which wires connect to pin four and five in a USB cable. Can you help please? Many thanks Noel

@@Jestey6 Your cable should have a wire for Pin5 (ground), but no wire for Pin4. You need to connect the resistor to the Pin4 of your cable's mini USB connector upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ec/USB_Mini-B_receptacle.svg

I have an older computer that I used to only charge devices from a USB port. I simply disabled the data function in the USB port and Ta daaa.(short for Da ta da Daaa🎶)

Interesting, That's what I thought would happen with the NUVI but it seemed to still drop into sync mode until I joined the data lines. Mine may just be an older unit or something weird with Garmin.
