I worked in the post office for 36 years & that happened every so often in most post offices & that’s why if look up at the ceiling of the post offices ( especially) the older ones how little mirror like one way windows separated a couple feet apart through the building. That’s where postal inspectors had their entrance (not available to anyone else including the PM) would be able to walk around & observe everything that goes on in the building except for the bathrooms. & locker rooms where employees would dress. In my day many people would send cash in the mail. In my day inspectors would set up traps in collection boxes where a carrier or collection driver would have to empty the box before going back to the office. Among letters they would leave damaged, slightly opens or opened mail with either money or something of value that could be observed. Then watch to see if the person turns it in. If they observe the person on the road put put it I one of his pockets they’d wait until he got back to office to see what he does then. That’s because when I worked there carriers did use vehicles. We either used public transportation or got a ride by the relay or parcel post driver & only had the flap of the mailbag to secure outgoing mail & could mixed up.

    😂
