- James Lancaster, the former manager of customer service at Indianapolis' New Augusta Post Office, stole more than 270 pieces of mail. James Lancaster, 42, and his attorney asked a federal judge for mercy Wednesday morning when Lancaster appeared in U.S. Federal Court for his sentencing hearing. But Judge Tanya Walton Pratt told the defendant his actions warranted a significant sentence, including time behind bars.

I owned a direct mail company 25 years ago and we discovered that some of the post offices were throwing our mail in the dumpster, tens of thousands paid in postage and instead of delivering it they threw it away. The incompetence, laziness and criminality at the USPS is rampant and I don't blame anyone who doesn't trust them.
Was it junk mail?
They have been doing this for decades, no surprise for me.

32 months. Unless you do more bad stuff while in jail almost nobody serves the entire sentence. You generally do 80% so 32 months for this guy. Not even 3 years.. each check was a felony.
@@jonathantaylor6926 I don’t think you realize how the law works with the whole thing is one crime is a felony. That’s so they can overwhelmed the court so it’s really hard to not be convicted of some thing. So in other words, you’re not typically going to get one year for the one piece of mail they got stolen. They do that so they can decide to have like 30 different ways to charge you.
In some cased, the judge gives little time so they can be released and start paying the money back.

I worked in the post office for 36 years & that happened every so often in most post offices & that’s why if look up at the ceiling of the post offices ( especially) the older ones how little mirror like one way windows separated a couple feet apart through the building. That’s where postal inspectors had their entrance (not available to anyone else including the PM) would be able to walk around & observe everything that goes on in the building except for the bathrooms. & locker rooms where employees would dress. In my day many people would send cash in the mail. In my day inspectors would set up traps in collection boxes where a carrier or collection driver would have to empty the box before going back to the office. Among letters they would leave damaged, slightly opens or opened mail with either money or something of value that could be observed. Then watch to see if the person turns it in. If they observe the person on the road put put it I one of his pockets they’d wait until he got back to office to see what he does then. That’s because when I worked there carriers did use vehicles. We either used public transportation or got a ride by the relay or parcel post driver & only had the flap of the mailbag to secure outgoing mail & could mixed up.
😂
How was this person a manager at the post office in the first place?

While he gets 40 months in prison; it should be noted that he loses his pension, retirement benefits, paid sick and vacation, social security, 401k, and much more. Also, he’s barred from holding a federal job for life. Getting a job elsewhere would be extremely difficult given that no employer wants to hire him.
he may not lose social security if he had a job in the past for credits but smaller amount id they are paying into it and he will have no income tillhes in his 60s no one will take him
