i remember having this idea and presented to my college CHI / HCI course way back 2011-2012. Happy this has become a reality somehow.
So I was watching a reel on FB about some invention to help the blind see and I was like why hasn't someone invented gloves that "talk"for sign language?... And apparently u guys did years ago 😂.. So glad there are smart ppl out there who can actually make random ideas a reality 😊
I really hope this invention wasn't just a project thrown into the bushes after a grade was received. This could really help people with disabilities so I hope there has been improvements made within the 6 years since this video came out.

hindi rin sila una nyan .. isang Kenyan . may indian..marami na gumawa nyan.... pero kahit sino sa kanila walang nakakagawa gloves interpret Filipino Sign language... Filipino Students were the First do that by research.. A Filipino sign laquage converted into a voice...

I like this but the person receiving the audio voice from the gloves how would they respond if they don’t know sign language

It allows people who are mute, but not deaf, to communicate spoken word using ASL. They would be able to hear their responses and then respond in ASL.
At the very least it allows people who are mute and hard-of-hearing to communicate their name and ask for help during emergencies.
Or if someone is deaf then they can at least sign out what they are saying if the people around them don't know sign language it would be tremendously helpful in their everyday life all around and anyone needing to respond could write out a response to said person without needing asl or figure out another form of communication.

Those are nice but have you tested it with a Deaf person? Cause some of those signs were done incorrectly

hearing impaired people can speak to hearing people but very slowly if the demo is any indication. Great idea but needs to pick up signs faster.
And it’s only one way for conversation…
This wasn't even ASL though....what you were signing did not match with what was said and it's not even ASL! How about hearing people just learn ASL instead?

Not really. There is no possible way for a computer to accurately interpret ASL into English. Most of ASL signs don't have direct translations, and I can't fathom a way a computer could recognize a classifier and the context it belongs to.

Or you can just learn ASL... why go through all that work and expense when learning ASL is half the work and less the price (there's lot of ASL education out there for free). Idk maybe I'm just not picking something up as to how this can benefit as a whole but this seems kind of ableist.
well i'd assume if anyone is going to use the device they would have to go through learning ASL anyway. if not then how does the device translate the gestures...

@@danicameradlp I agree with you that this seems ablelist. As a hard-of-hearing person with progressive hearing loss, the daughter of a profoundly deaf man, and has a sister who is in the same position as I am, I'm learning American Sign Language as a 50 year old. I'm assuming that the inventors were thinking that a Deaf person who didn't speak, could use these to translate to a hearing person. Writing on a white board suddenly looks cheaper and more consistent.
As pointed out by Mitchell Perilla two weeks ago, there is so much more to ASL than just the hand positions. To use them, one would have to be robotic in signing for it to translate.
I have to applaud the kids that engineered this, but had they chosen to consult with the Deaf community in their area, they would have seen that this is an unneeded product that would have to be used by the Deaf person in a deaf-on-hearing conversation, radically reducing their language to an almost different form.
If a man was making a product for women, simply because he thought it was cool, he should consult with women if it was a product worth making and whether or not it fit any kind of need. Perhaps these kids should have done the same thing.

That only works if you only talk to close friends who already know asl and never talk to anyone new. Not sure how it's ableist to make gloves a deaf person can choose to buy to communicate with non asl speakers. in a situation where you need to tell someone something quickly, waiting for them to learn sign language isn't an option.
