Interesting for U.S. tourists: When you leave the railway station you see a monument, offered by France thanking for the humanitarian aid by Switzerland during the french-german war 1870/71, when Basel, Berne and Zurich evacuated thiusands of women and children from Strasburg, which was under heavy artillery fire. The artist, who designed this monument, was the same, who designed the Liberty Statue in New York! Mr, Bartholdy. If you look at the lady protecting the women and children with her swiss shield, you will easily recognise the same female model as with the Liberty Statue. Just as additional info.
As a basilean myself i suggest future visitors also smth uncommon for tourists: -Port in Kleinhüningen(basel) -streets next/nearby the market place -a sauna in winter at directly attached to the river -numerous places for good and cheap eating local and international -redlight district(but dont expect topmodels) -streetworkout at the river(for sport) -dreirosenbrücke(brigde) for sunset picnic and a few more activities but im too lazy rn to write it down.
Thank you so much for all of the helpful tips that are a bit more uncommon. I'm pinning your comment so anyone else watching can quickly see your recommendations :)
I'm a Brit who lived in Basel for a year (firstly near SBB, then in Kleinhuningen halfway between Claraplatz and the Stucki centre) before moving onto the much quieter Sarnen, just outside Lucerne. I miss Basel so much so this is the only reason I'm watching this. In terms of Swiss towns and the order I love them; 1. Basel 2. Lucerne 3. Bern 4. Lugano 5. Biel 6. Fribourg 7. Zurich 8. Zug 9. Lausanne 10. St Gallen 11. Geneva
thank you for the great videos! we plan to visit Switzerland from US this June. Your videos/tips are very helpful! Looking forward to more Switzerland travel guides from you!
As a person who lives in Basel do not go to mark Haller but just stay near martplatz AND go to a place called Gilgen. Also go to barfusserplatz if you are tourist. Also American cents in Basel are rapen and finally one of the best restaurant in Basel is Fischerstuba near wettstienplatz!
Never been there, love the museum, its cool to make your own paper, love hands on experience during travel. thanks for the tour and will check them out next time I go there.
So jealous 😍😍😍 we cant wait to visit Switzerland!!! It’s one of the next few counties we want to visit. Love these types of videos because we love to travel around ourselves, Road trip, and find all the hidden gems and good eats 🎉🎉🎉 definitely taking notes! Thank you!
So lovely to hear!! Hopefully this current situation passes sooner rather than later and we're all able to travel more freely! Once you make it to Switzerland let us know if you hav e any questions!
We love these kind of videos too! Great way to do trip research. Love how this video has both personal experience and a great list of must stop at places.
This seems to be a very charming place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much!
OMG 16K you weren't joking that this video was picked up!!! HAHA. It's a super comprehensive list and definitely really helpful for those who want to go! Museums, Views, and Ferries The fun doesn't stop! I think the most exciting place that we would want to check out would definitely be Dreilandereck because you can be at 3 countries at once! We would also love to do the paper mill because that experience looks so cool! We saw it on AMAZING RACE once! Dreams do come true!
It was such an amazing Musuem! We actually have a whole video dedicated to just the museums in Basel if you're interested. Thanks so much for watching :)
That was a nice and entertaining glimpse of an amazing city that I used to live in or visit on a frequent basis. I think I will share this with a few Basel Native You Tubers and ask them to expand on the themes.
Läckerli are the best. Grand tour de Suisse is the best activity to do (Road Trip of course). You didn't mention that EuroPark is 100K away with a lot of shuttles from Basel (Approx. 1:30 by bus, 1h by car). This is the best to do from Basel :) !
The colored Rathaus is my fave in Basel and riding the trams. Very interesting museums...haven't been to one of them yet. Would love to go to the interactive ones.
Oh I've been waiting for this guide although I've seen the best of Basel considering it my 2nd home. 😅 It's still amazing to know your perspective and watch other people's vlogs, especially Swiss people exploring their own country! 🤗
Basel is one of the places I want to travel to. We stopped for a moment when I was on the train headed to Italy. I wish I was able to properly explore Switzerland when I lived in Europe!
There's a lot to visit in Switzerland. If ever you're heading down from the UK and Italy, I'd recommend doing it over a number of days. There's a lot worth visiting in the nearby regions of France and Germany too (but don't go to Mulhouse, France, it's rough there! Colmar and Strasbourg, though? LOVELY. Strasbourg is 1 hour 15 from Basel by car or train). Switzerland also has some underrated cities as well as Basel. Lugano, Lucerne and Bern are my recommendations once you've left Basel to travel to Italy. The transport museum in Lucerne is AMAZING.
Hi Martin, this was filmed in late June -- the situation was very different in Europe at that time, but there are quite a few more restrictions now unfortunately!
Now, Fernruary 2023, there are no COVID restrictions anymore. For a swim in the river: wait til end of May. The water during spring might be quite fresh.
love this! I am going to be going for just 1 day (arriving at 10am and leaving at 5pm) what are your top 3 (maybe 4) things I simply can't miss when I am there??
Definitely check out the Kunstmuseum! Maybe walk to the top of the Basel Minster church as well - such amazing views of the city. Depending on how much time you have left you can either hit another museum or walk in the Paper Mill district or along the Rhine, both are so beautiful
I am so grateful that I followed your recommendation to day trip to Basel. What a beautiful place and fabulous museums! The only lesson learned as a solo traveler is that they wouldn’t let me climb the church tower alone; the rule is that I have to go with someone I know. I wonder what the origin of that policy is?
12:20 Any Migros? I guess not! They need to have a specific size. They need to be at least MM (Migros Markt) (food and a good part of non-food) or bigger (MMM, Migros Media Markt, including sports, and electronics).
@@TheTravelingSwiss In the center of the city, probably yes. But I have never seen them here in the Migros Neubad. That's why "any Migros" isn't quite true. There are a lot of stores and store chains selling them, but not everywhere in the canton. That is what I tried to correct.
This is the 2nd time in 3 days UA-cam suggest me watching a video about the city i live in 😂 btw. Expect some nudity at the "beach" where you entered the river.
@@TheTravelingSwiss okay that’s better :D it’s really slow 😂 But the most people really think that the boat get pulled by the cable. But the cable is only to prevent the boat from floating down the river. To cross it they just put the boat in a 45 degree angle to the flow direction of the river. So the force of the water get splittend and pushes the boat to the other side :)
It is the huge rudder behind the boat, which controls the speed and manoeuvres, the position of the cable navigates the ship right or left. And it has to be slow. There is no better place to relax, thinking, and enjoying the force of the current. 😎 This video explains the functions: ua-cam.com/video/5aOyKBkwfgI/v-deo.html&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE

If you like floating in water, check out the White water park in Huningue. It`s not far from Basel and you can do Hydrospeed there. It`s really fun!

You were able to take part in multiple interactive activities. I learned to make paper in college as a Fine Arts major.
I enjoyed all the different angles that you captured and the great stair climb of 2021. How tall was that staircase to the bell?
you got around everywhere and really showed the place, I've never been there so it was good to see
Welcome to Basel

Lots of suicides. Folks jumping from the top. So, they decided that only a group of at least two persons are admitted.
I got art show here🎉🎉🎉
