This reviewer needs to explain that he is using the Chestnut development batch, but most people will get Evergreen, which is the batch for mass production, that is currently scheduled to start shipping in mid-August. Given that the PCB will change in the Dogwood batch and there are future power management improvements to extend the battery life, it is ridiculous to review this phone in its current state. It is fine to tell us what is the current state of development, but clearly explain that it is still in development and this isn't a review of the final product for the general public.
MakeUseOf left out many important things, like the fact Purism is developing a new mobile graphical user interface called Phosh which runs on Linux+Wayland+GTK+GNOME libraries, whereas the PinePhone isn't developing the software and is relying on community groups like UBports, PostmarketOS, etc., which dramatically lower its development costs. The hardware kill switches in the PinePhone are underneath the back panel, so you can't access them without disassembling the phone, whereas the hardware kill switches on the Librem 5 can be accessed while using the phone, so they are more useful. The GPU on the Librem 5 is roughly 2.5 times more powerful than on the PinePhone, which is very important because the Librem 5 is will have the future ability to connect to an external monitor, mouse and keyboard in order to use it as a desktop PC.
If you are trying to decide between the Librem 5 and PinePhone, I recommend reading my blog post that compares the two phones:

We can only review what we're given; if that's not the final model, they shouldn't submit it for scrutiny. We're not going to review somethign based on what it could be or what features are promised to come, because that's not what anyone is going to get now.

    • @amosbatto3051

@@MakeUseOf, If Purism didn't tell you that you were getting a development model to review, then the company clearly screwed up in its communication with you. Only a couple hundred people who preordered in August or September of 2017 got the Chestnut batch and they clearly knew that they were getting a development model, since Purism explained it on their website and in the email to customers asking them which version of the phone they wanted. The vast majority of people who preordered the Librem 5 will be getting the Evergreen batch, and that batch is what should be reviewed in my opinion, since anyone ordering the Librem 5 today will be getting Evergreen.
In the interest of transparency, I think that you ought to add a note to your written review and to this video, which explains that you are reviewing the Chestnut development model, and not the final model for mass production.

Not gonna lie, given what happened with SCL/Cambridge Analytica and various other state-sponsored abuses of privacy (e.g. www.opendemocracy.net/en/opendemocracyuk/another-brick-in-the-wall-can-we-save-child-rights-from-school-surveillance/) it’s a little hard to take seriously anyone who decrees that “it’s better to risk your privacy” and who can’t be bothered to fully appreciate that a) they received a development unit and that b) the milestones already achieved are a very positive indicator of the quality we can expect from future developments. As others have commented, your review is more than misleading and I imagine the competitors you steered viewers to (without a genuine like-for-like comparison) must be loving it.

Although I could aggree with this review for the actual version that is reviewed, it is good that the long development roadmap is mentioned. As is evident, they are still on it :)
The battery in the eventual version will be of a larger capacity than the one in this review model, which will account for improved battery life, together with more software optimisations.
The point of this phone however, as opposed to the pinephone (which is a great project in itself), is that it will be(you can buy it now, but the finished version isn't out, these are development batches of it) the first commercially available fully "free" phone. The "free as in free speech, not free beer" is kind of the focus point of the phones manufacturer, since their stance is that to actually be fully in charge of your own devices, the software needs to be 100% open source(I use this term for simplicity). From the applications down to the hardware drivers.
There's still work to be done, that much seems obvious from this review, but personally I can see a lot ot value for there to be at least a single alternative to the huge tech giants that currently dominate the market software wise. You either get an android phone, or an apple device, and the android open source projects seem as good as gone.
Not to the tech enthusiasts, but for less tech savvy people, there is still lots of potential here. Especially so if you are into the free software principles, im which it would be the first of it's kind.

    • @Vancha112
      @Vancha112 4 роки тому

@Boogey Man The goals are all sound, but the problem with these kind of projects is that they are extremely ambitious. I've backed the phone because I want to support their efforts, but personally wouldn't expect the phone to compete with any of the major players on the smartphone market anytime soon.
It does for some, especially tech enthusiasts, but what a lot of people seem to expect is this to end up as some sort of easy to use device, that offers all the features that any other modern smartphone does. That simply won' t be the case, which is why it would be unwise to recommend it to anyone other then tech enthusiasts and people that *really* value their privacy.
Looking at the amount of work that has been put in the planned default OS for this phone, and is still being put into it, I'm pretty sure that at some point it will achieve just this, a phone that performs the most basic tasks for a non-technical end user, but by the very goals of purism themselves it won' t be a mass market phone.
This is made very clear by people that keep asking "when can i expect the facebook app to run" , or "how do i get whatsapp running on this?". The issues that are addressed with this phone aren't even known to most regular smartphone users, so it is to be expected that a lot of people just look at it as an underpowered overprice bulky device. There' s just that little bit of convenience you' d have to sacrifice to be able to use something like this, even if it was only to regain it once you've learned how to use the software that comes with it.
Even if it's the perfect phone to buy if you value the goals (and you have to value them a lot to spend this much money), it's not the perfect phone to use. Not because it's not out yet, but even when it is, it won't be that usable anyways.

No the pinephone does not come close to privacy as under is law the gsm module must be tackable and tappable per us law. Primarily the gsm module is completely separate from the CPU, without that you have basically no privacy. The pinephone does not have that. That alone for a dumb phone was $2000 a couple years ago. This is $750 for a smartphone with that $2000 features. If you don't need that feature then yes get a Android.

Sorry guy, this beats any fancy shiny Samsung and iPhone any day, it’s a virtual Linux desktop in a phone body. So what, it’s still in development, I think reviews like this may come across as disingenuous, why? Did the iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google’s attempt come out of the box when they started with superb top of the line features ? While I appreciate the honest views, I still believe you cannot use phones by today’s standard against a small new company, they’re not pushing Android, so it’ll take time. I prefer my freedom and security any day above collective convenience, bells and whistles. Cheers !

Being able to shut power to the gsm module is critical to privacy and no android Rom can do this for us.

Ordinary users should not even consider a Linux phone and stick with Android or Apple, it really is that simple. Since development of hobby projects is slow and the work is hard it would be reasonable for those wanting a phone with modern features to ignore Linux phones for another ten years (which isn't much time) and do their Linux work on notebooks or if you must try it on a phone, in containers like UserLAnd offer. If you really want privacy you don't use your phone for anything but minimal comms in the first place and use a proper Linux or BSD OS on PC instead.
Wider audiences should avoid power user OS and hardware. The idea of one device for everyone is idiotic because what suits morons doesn't suit the experienced so they should not share more than standard file formats. Power users want choice. Noobs want easy default choices made for them.
