    How do you clean the intake ports from clogging by EGR and PCV mix if you don't have gas anymore running through ?

      I made it to 60000 miles and only now do I need a valve servicing. I suggest the ol' Italian tune up every once in a while, and if your in the U.S. look for Top Tier gas. After I get my valves cleaned I'll add a catch can. Hopefully that'll help

    it also lowers efficiency because of a more stratified charge. It's a good system for diesels, for gasoline engines not so much. Take a look at FreeValve cylinder heads, they don't need GDI because they can achieve high compression with port injection, and since the charge is homogeneous, they get even better efficiency. Factor the high cost of a direct injection system (both the direct cost of replacing broken components and the indirect cost of carbon buildup on intake components) and GDI is a solution to the wrong problem. The right solution is camless engines.

    This Invention design is a replica of how diesel engines work today, although it is a great I idea for bosh to hit the market as most people use personal vehicles than big trucks, awesome engine animation...! We will be buying mostly bosh parts in the future!

    This is essentially the common rail system my diesel uses. All those high pressure components means big dollars when it breaks. Cost around $3000 to replace the injectors and fuel rail when mine shit itself near 100,000 km. No advantage in fuel savings when you end up with bigger maintenance bills.

      im pretty sure once direct injectors will become more common in the near future, the cost will go down unless u go under dealership instead of regular auto shop or diy. plus more aftermarket direct injector parts become more common to buy too since direct injector seems more efficient other than diesel engine.

    • @oo0Spyder0oo
      @oo0Spyder0oo 7 років тому

      ***** That's optimistic but sadly untrue. The overhaul of the system in labour cost alone is a huge debt, that won't go down, wages keep rising.

    • @WhyteLis21
      @WhyteLis21 7 років тому

      we shall see. direct injectors has been around since the early 1900s so its not like its something new. but its has been close to perfected in the last decade or so. i mean direct injectors will have it's place among diesel, flex fuel, bio diesel, regularly gasoline engine. the cost will have to go down if there's going to be mass production of direct injectors for years to come. who knows. otherwise why build direct injectors in the first place if it's so expansive. it's place in common newer model cars over older engines. so we don't really know what the future holds on direct injectors.

    They forgot to mention the added expense (to the consumer) due to carbon build-up on the backs of the intake valves, cost to clean carbon build-up $600-up depending on engine and that will happen every 30k -60k miles. Thanks for the long list of parts (components) that have been added to modern engines...all I see are potential parts that will fail. Time for electric cars.
    A few (not many) auto manufactures have addressed the issue of intake valve carbon build-up by adding secondary port injectors.

      +Stephen Kasapis Optimized air flow in the cylinder and improved jet flow of the laser-drilled high-pressure injectors result in clean combustion in the DI engine. This minimizes the build-up of deposition products in the combustion chamber. Thanks to its GDI system, Bosch complies with all current emission legislation, while working on solutions with which to meet future, more stringent limits as well.

      The right answer to this question is cars are expensive to manufacture and have a small profit margin, vehicle technology on the other hand, is much easier to manufacture and is a field growing faster than automotive production. In short, building cars = expensive and need a huge expensive plant, building/designing car technology can be done with a couple bright engineers and a computer with Autocad.

  • @dadsfave
    @dadsfave 7 років тому +11

    It all seems quite complex compared to Toyota's Atkinson cycle created by simply varying the valve timing. You've got the high pressure fuel pump, all kinds of sensors and a turbo, all of which can fail. The high compression ratio creates NOx and particulates so you need exhaust treatment to meet regulations. The valves and intake manifold are not getting washed by fuel, so they get coated with carbon which has to be cleaned out. Sure you get more power out of a smaller engine, but once you add the turbo and other stuff, is the engine really much lighter?

    • @aidan1585
      @aidan1585 2 роки тому +2

      A 1.4 turbo drives better than an N/A 1.8, because of the added torque. Also Toyota petrol engines with Atkinson cycle have GPFs (Gasoline particulate filter), like in their hybrids to get the lowest CO2 and NOx levels they can.

But the above injection systems I have mentioned above the only difference between them is that the position of fuel injectors?...Plz do correct me if I am wronge.

    will the need for additional fuel filters be needed? i am having an issue of the mrs with a habit of running her vehicle on empty and sucking crud off the bototm of the tank and taking out injectors. at $150 a pop it gets expensive.

    • @boschmobility
      @boschmobility  9 років тому +3

      +azthundercloud The Fuel-supply system is designed with two fuel filters. A pre-filter in the tank protects the in-tank fuel pump during the whole vehicle lifetime. The second filter is a fine-filter between fuel-pump and injection system. This fine-filter is placed either in-tank or in the fuel line between tank and engine. If in-tank then it is designed for lifetime and no change is needed. If outside the tank then it depends on the vehicle manufacturers mandatory service or change intervals. The entire system design and mandatory service intervals reliably protects the fuel injectors from impurities regardless of the user’s fueling behavior. Modifications are neither required nor advisable.

    how is the air-fuel ratio maintained if you are not making use of carburetor??

    • @boschmobility
      @boschmobility  9 років тому +5

      Shreyas Jagtap For optimum combustion, the injected fuel mass must be regulated in a certain ratio to the air mass supplied (air mass : mass of fuel = 14.7 : 1). With the hot-film air mass meter the air mass flowing into the intake manifold is determined. Via the throttle valve the for the required torque necessary air mass for the combustion is set. The engine control unit determines the optimum fuel mass to be injected through the injectors into the combustion chamber from the air mass and the residual oxygen content of the exhaust gas (oxygen sensor).

    As this was uploaded in 2013 and it's 2016 now, i'm curious if you all have made improvements for this technology yet? You don't have to be specific at what you all have done if you made any progress.

    • @boschmobility
      @boschmobility  8 років тому +15

      Improvements regarding the gasoline direct injection technology have been made in the last years, such as injection at a pressure of 350 bar in place of the previous 200 bar. The higher pressure means the fuel is more finely atomized, significantly reducing particulates.

    • @brandontracy9621
      @brandontracy9621 7 років тому +1

      2 drawbacks is new car owners don't realize that the new unfamiliar ticking noise coming from there engine is a normal noise coming from the high pressure fuel pump. second issue is the back of the valves are not getting cleaned like a conventional port injection engine. that causes carbon buildup, leading to sticking valves, leading too intermittent misfires, in some cases catastrophic valve and cylinder head damage after the valve sticks and the pistons slams into it.

    • @guthrie1181
      @guthrie1181 7 років тому +1

      fadimo305 I think you're a little confused on the subject. Fuel and oil quality have nothing to do with the intake valve deposits. With GDI, the fuel bypasses the intake valves all together, and oil vapors will occur whether you use synthetic or not.
      The carbon deposits are caused by a combination of exhaust gasses from the EGR valve, and oil vapors from the pcv system. There are 3 ways to reduce or eliminate this problem. You can delete the EGR valve, and install an oil catch can, or you can just spray methanol. Another way is supplemental port fuel injection, but those kits are expensive and only for the really high horsepower guys.
      And btw, I do use top tier fuel(exxon). My car is tuned for 93 octane, and I only give it the best. As far as oil goes, I change mine every 2,500 miles(unnecessary.. I know), so I don't need the best synthetic known to man. There are plenty of used oil analysis reports out there that confirm this.

    • @jimmesc
      @jimmesc 8 років тому +4

      By premixing the a/f mixture, it is compressed on the compression stroke. When using a high compression ratio
      pre-ignition (detonation, knock, pinging) occurs. Higher compression equals higher efficiency. So by injecting fuel near the top of the compression stroke higher compression can be used, pre-ignition is reduced, and efficiency should be increased.

    timing the right amount of air at the right time will require huge precision... so.. has there been any progress in the air input sensor..or it is already developed??...

  • @Xgamer121X
    @Xgamer121X 8 років тому

    i dont know if the animation is an exact 100% representation of what really happens in direct injected engines, but if it is, im confused. i see the injection event is happening during the intake stroke when the intake valve is open. if the intake valve is is open, the cylinder is taking in air. it is pulling it in. i would not think that the cylinder is under pressure during the intake stroke, so what is the need for the high injection pressures?

    • @boschmobility
      @boschmobility  8 років тому

      +Xgamer121X A correspondingly high pressure is required in order to achieve fine atomization under all conditions and thus ensure a good fuel/air mixture formation. It is a fundamental requirement for complete and clean combustion.

      +danekeeper1 Optimized air flow in the cylinder and improved jet flow of the laser-drilled high-pressure injectors result in clean combustion in the DI engine. This minimizes the build-up of deposition products on the engine valves caused by back-flowing exhaust gas.

      @@boschmobility it's not about the backflow of exhaust, it's the PCV oil vapors, and EGR soot that's introduced into the engine which gets the intake valves dirty really quickly

    So how do these engines avoid premature combustion? Is it due to the more precise mixing and timing or what?

    Bosch Mobility Solutions, congratulations for the development of the full integrated igniton, fuel & oxidazer system. Is there any specific system for flexfuel engines in Brazil, like direct injection of gasoline (26% vol. anydrous ethanol) combined with indirect injection of hydrated ethanol ( 92% wt ethanol + 8% wt water)?

    • @boschmobility
      @boschmobility  7 років тому +1

      In Brazil, Bosch does not offer any systems in which alcohol is injected into the manifold and flex fuel directly into the combustion chamber in combination.

    it should be like this so the engine do not need an overlapping valve that wasting lot of gasoline.. but without overlapping, it will generate more heat and knocking that need to be solved, but of course will create more efficiency.

    what are the main differences beetween a gasoline and a diesel injector?
    Also, we have a unplated car for closed track use, it is a cdti engine. we remapped it to increase power, changed turbocharger and some other works. would increase the size of the injectors help with the performance?

    • @boschmobility
      @boschmobility  8 років тому

      +Doc. Volt The main difference between a gasoline and a diesel engine is the combustion process - especially the pressure level. For that reason there are different concepts of the injectors.

    can this direct injection use to indirect injection engine? what should to be modifying?

    • @boschmobility
      @boschmobility  8 років тому +2

      +Yogi Anmaris No, because the systems are completely different. Indirect injection injects into the port fuel, direct injection injects side or center mounted directly into the cylinder head. Each direct injection engine needs a defined spray design for each system requirement, engine, and combustion strategy.

    • @banglaforceuk
      @banglaforceuk 8 років тому +6

      it's been doing it for the last 20 or so years, some have a check for how much the pedal is from the top and a separate sensor from bottom (twin track) to detect a malfunction and have a backup.

    • @lazzer408
      @lazzer408 8 років тому

      +BUNCHofxs It was done mainly to allow automakers to use smaller less-expensive transmissions with fewer clutches. They cut back the throttle on a shift then reapply it. It's also used for traction control. They save money, but you pay for the new "feature". Profit is the first goal. Your enjoyment comes second.

      +lazzer408 GDI downsizing in combination with turbocharging reduces fuel consumption and increases low end torque.

    • @lazzer408
      @lazzer408 8 років тому +1

      "GDI downsizing" ? What does that even mean? There are MANY variables that effect fuel economy. GDI+Turbo doesn't mean an instant gain in MPG. Your comment inferring it does is ignorant. In the long run, GDI causes intake valves to load up with carbon and restrict the intake airflow significantly as early as 30k miles. What's Bosch's solution to that problem? Increase boost pressure to force it in? That lowers efficiency even further. If MPG is a concern, focus on vehicle aerodynamics and not the minimal gains of increasing an appallingly inefficient engine technology. Want me to come work for you guys so I can show you how shit gets done? Cars averaged 25~30mpg 50 years ago. Nothing's changed.

    How did the Hot-Film mass air flow sensor know every cylinder gets
    the even air (every cylinder getting the even air) ?

    • @boschmobility
      @boschmobility  9 років тому

      maybach300c The HFM measures the air mass in the air intake tract. The sensor element consists of a heated sensor membrane over which the intake air flows.
