the way you said you have to build up stamina for a genre before just jumping in is SO true. When I haven't read fantasy in a while I read so slowly just to get used to it again

@@molliee5183 ray bearer by Jordan Ifueko - African fantasy . Unique magic , fast paced , short.
Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend - middle grade series that captures the wonder of Harry Potter and does it in a much better story, imo.
mistborn by Brandon Sanderson - sort of fantasy heist novel at first, becomes more than that after book 1.
shadow of the gods by John Gwynne - Norse inspired, son kidnapped. Mother chasing after the kidnappers.

I've always asked myself how can book influencers read so much having other jobs and things to do, and how do they not get burnt out of how much different storys and characters have they known in such a short time. So I understand how you're feeling but you dont need to talk about 6 or more books in a wrap up to make it interesting!! i would love to see a deeper talk about 3 books sometimes. And its funny because book influencers reading so much makes us - the suscribers - feel pressure or guilty of not reading that much, and it's not your fault obviously but it's a vicious cycle of seeing our reading as a number

Don’t stress out on how many books you feel you “should” read. I would rather you read a few books that you throughly enjoyed and share those with me. Life has enough stress in it to add “ mandatory “ reading into it when you already have that for school.

a new memoir that has really peaked my interest is called "I'm Glad my Mom Died" by Jennette McCurdy. It's release date is in August, but it caught my attention because I grew up watching her. I know you have mentioned reading more memoirs, maybe this one will make the TBR? Anyway, thank you :)

Best book this April: Daisy Jones & The Six.
I was lucky and didn’t have any disappointments. I’m feeling great about reading, I’m 3 books ahead of my Goodreads goal, and I’m excited to complete it. I’ve been checking a lot of books off my TBR at my library so I’m more motivated than ever.

Solidarity over here with the over-saturation / struggle with reading this April! For me the stress of life has affected my reading a lot. I'm not a content creator, but I do track my reading too. I've needed to slow down and enjoy the experience more just like you mentioned. Similarly as well, the books I found most joy in aren't the ones I'm enjoying at the moment. I'm proud of you for leaning in to what's working. Awesome work!!

Historical fiction recommendation: The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave. Set in Norway in 1617, premise is that a remote Norwegian island is hit by a storm that kills all the men, leaving the women to fend for themselves and the story is about them 🌊 the writing is gorgeous and the characters are super engrossing and believable

You describe reading fatigue perfectly! I completely relate. Thankfully, "Stealing Home", the first book in the "Sweet Magnolias" series, has helped me enjoy reading again. Less numbers, more getting lost in the story of a well written book. :) I am glad you are coming out of your reading fatigue, too. I hope you find rest and relaxation in your upcoming reads. :)

I like to think of reading as a form of consuming entertainment on par with watching tv or movies because it is a form of enjoyment and self care. I would never be mad at myself for “watching less television” and doing some other form of self care or just acknowledging that I am bored with TV at the moment. So I try to look at reading the same way! Also, there is a variety of book content that can be made without having to read new books! I love your reading vlogs even if they are short! Also, when you compile lists of books for certain moods/genres! We just love you and want you to enjoy your form of self care

Anyhoo, a historical fiction I really enjoyed was The Huntress by Kate Quinn.

Dancing girls is a historical fiction also set in France! Beginning is quite slow but plot really thickens when the focus is shifted onto the older sister. The author basically saw a sculpture and decided to make a backstory for the unnamed girl depicted in it which is quite neat and I think it’ll be a quick read for you

Hey Noelle, I feel you! I hate the pressure to read a great quantity of books a month and that’s the reason why I stopped watching book tube even though I love it so much. I probably had a 7 month break and that’s when I found my love for reading again. I’m currently reading “Midnight Library” by matt Haig and love it so far:). I also feel sometimes that I “have to read” certain (hyped) books in order to be a part of society or I’m the one missing out on something, which is bullshit obviously! I only have one life and don’t want to spend it reading books that I’m certainly not interested in...

Noelle, we love you so much and want you to enjoy reading always 🤍 I think we’d all be super okay with less books in wrap ups. Quality > Quantity. I’d rather you be happy and enjoy reading than worried about making the videos ‘good enough’ cause the more you enjoy the process- the more natural it will be 🥰
That being said. Everyone goes through reading slumps and it’s okay. I think I’m in one now or else all the books I pick are not very good or not the genre I need rn lol.

Not about this video- but needed to thank you for mentioning Brene Browns the gifts of imperfection. I listened through hoopla- it's only like 4 and a half hours if that and I'm still ruminating on it. Beginning felt a little expected, but as it went on what she had to say about shame and all of these other things really were things I needed to hear. It's one I wanna revisit because it gave me a lot to think about, and there were a lot of things she said about what actually makes us feel fulfilled that I don't want to lose sight of. Been hearing her name for ages, but hearing you mention it was the little kick I needed. Thank you for that
PS- if the book content making causing reading burnout remember it happens to everyone. Mix it up, take a break, but most of all take care of you and have fun.
PPS really wanna read all the light we cannot see- but I expect it to be very emotional and not sure I'm ready yet (Historical fiction) Have you read this yet? Happy you picked up Patti Smith- I have another one of hers and have been meaning to get to her writing. Maybe this month you'll have made me grab that one :)

The best book I read this month was Natasha Sholl's memoir called Found, Wanting. It's a memoir about grief, as it begins when her partner dies suddenly when she's only 22. It deals with heavy subjects but at the same time it talks about life, its mundanity, its highs and lows... and the writing was also so beautiful. I higly recommend it !!

My knuckles and bones in general are smaller than normal, so my knuckles are tiny and give me plump, childlike looking hands. I’m excited to read the historical fiction recs here. First, please don’t feel you need to read a ton of books a month! I sit with my Goodreads open while watching your videos and love whatever you talk about. For historical fiction, I LOVED Where the Lost Wander by Amy Harmon. The Alice Network was also really enjoyable. Both five stars for me. Memoirs - Finding Freedom: A Cook’s Story; Remaking a Life From Scratch. And finally, you’ve probably read it already but Mary Jane was awesome.

Have you heard of The Binding by Bridget Collins? It's an historical romance set in the 19th century that has magical elements. The romance is so well built and it deals with memories, book binding, forbidden love etc. My favourite historical fiction is the Aubrey & Maturin series. I don't think it's your thing but it's 21 books long and it's some of the best writing and characters I've ever read, they are so real. Also I hope your reading fatigue clears soon, the pressure to read lots can be heavy and reading is for enjoyment and we understand! Have a great reading month Noelle!

My favorite: Heartstopper through all volumes currently release. I haven’t read something so lighthearted and sweet in a while so it was a nice change of pace.
My least and probably my 2022 albatross: The Sound and the Fury by Faulkner. I’ve never read Faulkner but felt up to the challenge in March. I then lost that drive so it’s been sitting in my Libby, with me being too stubborn to DNF
A memoir recc: High Risk Homosexual. It’s new and I believe the authors debut. I really connected to it as a queer person but I also loved reading a memoir from someone relatively young.

When you said you’ve gone through a genre switch I was thinking you were going to read more fantasy. I’m so glad you said general fiction, memoirs, and historical fiction. You’re one of the only booktubers (and Ariel) who read the genres that I do and do not heavily read fantasy.

ah yes, historical fiction is my personal favorite genre! i’d recommend the book of lost names, the lovely war (combines Greek mythology and HF), the henna artist by alka joshi, and the last queen by chitra banerjee divakaruni if you want to dabble into some Indian HF :)

My favorite book this month was definitely the Heartstopper series!! I loved it so much! The biggest disappointment of the month was The summer I turned pretty series ugh it was so so bad I have the whole thing a 1.5-2 stars. My reading this month has been okay 😊 I’ve definitely been feeling more meh about reading but I’ve ordered a ton of new reads so I’m super excited about those!

I recently read the the memoir The Glass Castle and loved it. Another favorite memoir of mine is Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. Also, the Ink to Film podcast talks about slaughterhouse five in depth.

I definitely just went through a bit of a slump too! I decided to lower my goals/ expectations for myself and only pick up books that I'm excited about. I want to focus more on quality rather than quantity.

So happy you got into slaughterhouse five! I didn’t like it the first time I read it and now I have a tattoo from the book. I love it more each time I read it.
If you want to get into Vonnegut a little more, you should look into his letters. There’s an event called letters live which letters from famous folks are read to an audience. Ian McKellen reads a letter Vonnegut wrote in his old age and Benedict Cumberbatch reads a letter Vonnegut wrote to a school board once he heard they burned copies of his books. So so so good. 💛💛💛💛💛

The Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier is a slow-paced but absolutely delectable historical fiction.I read it as a teenager and it's the novel that made me fall in love with historical literature. Because it takes place in Holland of the seventeenth centurie and is inspired by the Vermeer's most famous painting, the book is so atmospherical and picturesque. I just loved the pages that simply described Vermeer's atelier, space, light, colours, etc. It was just so mesmerizing to read. Anyways, I hope that this little suggestion will get to you! Have fun:))

Hey Noelle! Considering your interest in reading memoirs and your recent trip to Paris, as well as your good experience with The Paris Bookseller, I recommend you to read "Shakespeare and Company", the memoir that Sylvia Beach wrote about creating her bookshop in Paris. I loved this book because it talks a lot about books, but also it talks a lot about American authors that moved to Paris during the lost decade, such as Fitzgerald and Hemingway.
