I love The Woman in White - that’s a perfect book to read in October when the weather is sort of autumnal, sort of winter. It’s incredibly atmospheric and suitably hyggely :D
Oooooh, perfect! :D
Read The tenant of Wildfell Hall this year.. one of the best books I've read. Totally recommend it
Really looking forward to reading it! :D
I'm currently reading The Castle of Otranto and it's interesting, I'm excited to see how it ends since I've heard so many mixed things about it. Rebecca is also on my list to read this year, I just have kept putting it off for years.
Oooh, hope you enjoy The Castle of Otrantro! :D Happy reading!
i was looking for some gothic recs and this greatly helped, thank you!
I read The Mysteries of Udolpho after finishing Northanger and it was such a perfect way to consume those stories!
Awesome! I'm definitely going to try to read them one after the other :D
Rebecca is really great! A very powerful hidden massage that is both universal and timeless.
Can't wait to read it :D
There probably aren’t many of us on BookTube who haven’t read _Rebecca,_ but I’m right there with you.
True! :D
Love this video! I’m literally about to start a Masters degree tomorrow on “The Gothic Imagination”! I’m currently reading Ann Radcliffe’s “The Italian”. As for modern authors, Laura Purcell is a fun gothic read and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed her books. Sarah Perry is excellent as well.
Thank you! Ooh, that's an interesting subject, hope it goes well for you! And thank you for the recommendations! :D
Great selection...as always! Some of my favorites on that list: The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, The Woman un White, The Last Man, The Castle of Ontario, The Mysteries of Udolpho and Northanger Abbey. I have not read Vathek but the summary has an unmistakable Faustian ring to it. Will definitely check it out.
If you like gothic fiction, some additional suggestions from my shelf here: Drood by Dan Simmons, We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson and The Gormenghast Trilogy by Mervyn Peake.
Awesome! Thank you for the recommendations! I've read We Have Always Lived in the Castle, but not the other two
You listed so many of my favorite Victorian classics!! Pleaaase read Rebecca, the tenant of Wildfell hall, and the woman in white!! Ugh please!
I've just finished The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and loved it! :D
The Crimson Petal and the White is brilliant 👍
Ah yes, I really need to read that one!! :D
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is so good. Rebecca is on my list of books to read by the end of this year :D
Can't wait to read it! Hopefully we also both love Rebecca :D
the background of this video is beautiful!
I love Rebecca and Northanger Abbey! all the others are on my tbr too :)
Thank you! :D
The Last Man is on my gothic list too! I hope you like all of the books :) The Vampyre came to my attention after reading about the weekend where they had the writing competition. Can't wait to hear your thoughts.
Awesome :D And thank you!
Rebecca was amazing. I can’t wait to read her other books
She has loads of books, so lots to look forward to! :D
I hauled The Woman In White ages ago on my channel but I’ve still not got around to reading it, you’ve just reminded me that I need to pick it up!
Hope you enjoy it if you do :D
Oh those endless classic we are to read... After Scandinavian Readathon, let's plan a Classic one and nail Rebecca :D
I've not read one book from you list, though...
Yes, it's a never ending list! :P
I’ve been meaning to read Rebecca for forever 🙌🏽
Same! :D
I’m shocked you don’t have The Monk on that list. That is the essential gothic horror. Love your videos as always!
Ah yes, I need to get a copy of that one! :D
I like the mysteries of udolpho and northanger - you should check out carmilla by Sheridan le fanu, it's also a gothic vampire classic :)
Thank you! :D
Love this list. I should read Northanger Abbey again, I remember 14 year old me thought it was hilarious 😁
Haha, awesome! :D
Rebecca is indeed one of my favorite books :)
Awesome :D
The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware was a pretty good gothic novel!
Awesome, thank you! :D
Rebecca is very much on my list as well!
Awesome! Hope you enjoy it when you get to it! :)
I liked Northanger Abbey a great deal in spite of being more than 200 years old! But I've been told to approach The Mysteries of Udolpho with caution... =) The reading group I follow on goodreads has picked Gothic as september theme and looking for something to read made me realise I have many Gothic unread classics in my shelves I keep postponing in favour of lighter reads, so I'll try to revert the trend in the following months...
That's interesting! I have a tendency to put books off for lighter reading as well :P
Rebecca lives on my shelves too. I hope I’ll get to it soon
Hope you enjoy it when you get to it :D
I actually just finished Woman in White recently. A bit slow burning (it's one of those paid-by-the-word Victorian serials) but really good.
Vathek is great, although I gather there's some scholarly debate about just how "Gothic" it is. Read it anyway, it's quite fascinating.
Otranto is... historically interesting and important by virtue of being the first Gothic novel but that's about it. And Udolpho is REALLY LONG, mostly. I can't understand why it was so influential.
And you *definitely* need The Monk. It's another slow-burner but in the last third or so it goes all out.
Of later Victorian era stuff in this vein, I'm particularly fond of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde by RL Stevenson, The Beetle by Richard Marsh, and The Great God Pan by Arthur Machen. And Wilde's Picture of Dorian Gray is a must too if you haven't read it.
Aaah, that's interesting! :D And thank you for the recommendations!
Så du skal basically lese alle de mest kjente classisce gotiske bøkene! Det blir gøy å høre hva du syns om dem. Du kommer til å digge Rebecca!
Jeg skal hvertfall prøve! :D Gleder meg til Rebecca!
I loved Rebecca. Read it for the first time in July and plan to reread it again in Oct/November.
Because of Rebecca I am now interested in gothic. Read Wuthering Heights as a result and hated it and am currently reading A Secret History.
Hahah, totally get your thoughts on Wuthering Heights (although I really liked it)! Hope you enjoy your current read though! :D
@@TheBookCastle Just to clarify the story itself was well written and actually fine. It's just that I was over Heathcliffe about a quarter of the way in.
@@karinabarbee8049 Honestly, I don't blame you at all! There are a lot of insufferable characters in that book :P
If you’re looking for a modern recommendation I’ve heard The Thirteenth Tale is supposed to be quite good - it’s been on my TBR forever!
Yees, I really need to read that one! :D
Read it, its very overrated. It has been some years since I read it, but still, I can't remember a single thing about it, except how underwhelmed I was.
You are really pretty btw
Thanks!
Personally, I hated Rebecca with a passion. I reached a point where I had to stop reading not to throw the book out of the window, then thought about watching the movie to see if it gets better... hated the movie just as much. xD
Also, The Castle of Otranto is weird af
And if you like early gothic vampire stories, I'd suggest Carmilla by LeFanu, if you haven't already read it ^^
Ah, that's interesting! I wonder what I'll make of it! :D I haven't read Carmilla, so I'll add that to my TBR :D
Elle Ren Yes! Finally, somebody who agrees with me! I tried putting the book in its historical context, but I just utterly hated the husband guy and the way he treated that poor young girl.
I have tried to read it several times and just can't get into it. It is soooo slow.
I loved Rebecca, but going into it keep in mind that the 2 main characters are quite unlikable (not sure if they were supposed to be) and very frustrating. The rest is great imo.
That's interesting! I usually like reading about unlikeable characters :D
