Hello Jen, I've been binge-watching your videos these days, it's so cozy and relaxing to hear you chat passionately about books! I wish I had friends like you in real life just wanted to say that you're amazing and love your taste in books so much. I've been reading some of your recommendations and I've liked them all so far, thank you for real I'm grateful for your existence 😊
And please can you make more videos related to your "if you liked this book" tag or graphic novels / short books? Those are my favorites.

Thanks for all the new books. I do a lot of rereading in October, so my library is mostly antiquarian and, until your video, I’ve had awful luck with young readers since they never recommend books I want to read. Nothing wrong with antique, of course, since Angela Carter is included n that group, along with Mary S. (Wonder if they would have liked each other? ) But fresh blood, ahem, enlivens a TBR/TBRR stack now and then. Hope you recommend scary movies, too. The young people who recommend October movies seem to favor the graphically gory, disgusting stuff. Have you watched Season 1 of Penny Dreadful? Set in Victorian London features Dracula, Dorian Gray and Victor F. as well as witch and werewolf lore. Take a look, if not. That’s, mostly, horror done well. Skip seasons two and three. The creator had the admirable good sense to stop after Season 3, even though fans wanted more. Thanks for your booklist, it will carry me through many, many Octobers.

Thanks for these recommendations Jen. I’m currently reading The Flower Girls and am really enjoying it - it does a good job as thriller that also explores wider issues around redemption and the public consumption of ‘evil’. Next up I’ve got Follow Me To The Ground out from the library which looks spooky and very strange and possibly up your dark street 💀

I read The Butcher's Hook and The Dreamers a while back, and while neither are "scary" per se, both are fantastic reads and I really loved Butcher Hook in particular. Last October I read Ghost a History for my monthly nonfiction read and it's very thorough and fairly academic, so if you're into that type of in depth study then you'll enjoy it (I did). For my nonfiction pick this month I'm reading Monster She Wrote, The Women Who Pioneered Horror and Speculative Fiction by Lisa Kroger. It's a new book, just came out in the US. It has really lovely vintage style illustrations also, which I find really adds to the overall reading pleasure. The Doll Factory is on my TBR, which I hear is a bit of a Victorian gothic/macabre style so definitely looking forward to that! The House on Vesper Sands is another dark neo Victorian, but from what I've heard it also has humor so that's on my list as well. The ghost picture book you showed is adorable! Great video with lots of great recommendations.

The Dumb House is ace, and quite short, so easy to read! I prefer the book of Under the Skin to the film. Unusually, I think I'm glad I saw the film first, because if I'd seen it after reading the book it would have lost a lot of it's mystery, whereas the book is so darn weird and different from the film, that having previously seen the film didn't spoil the book in the slightest. The abridged audiobook of Lullaby was on Radio 4 a few months ago, might still be on iPlayer!

Jen thanks for the nice long list! Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you especially for introducing me to the Nicci French novels❤️ (a few videos ago?). Read my way right through Blue Monday and Tuesday’s Gone and started Waiting for Wednesday this morning 🥰. Frieda is marvelously perceptive and the twists not (too) predictable. I’d recommend Woman in the Window by AJ Finn as the best thriller I’ve read all year because of the writing. Sorry it doesn’t really belong here as a Creepy October book, but I just thought of it now and am not likely to search out your earlier requests for thriller recommendations. Anyway thanks again👍🙏

I’m sure you know The Daylight Gate by Jeanette Winterson and the Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. The former is set during the Lancashire Witch Trials and is a tour de force of popery witchery, popery witchery, as the old, old, old saying goes. The Historian is 676 pages but it’s riveting all the way through. “The story of a young girl who is plunged into a labyrinth where the secrets of her family’s past connect to an inconceivable evil: the dark 15th century reign of Vlad the Impaler and a time-defying pact that may have kept his awful work alive through the ages.” An old one but I just read it in October 2020 and may again this year. Second Nature by Alice Hoffman is also old (1994) but I reread it every few Octobers to enjoy the story of a woman who, without understanding why, rescues a man held in a psychiatric hospital because his doctor suspects he may have been raised my wolves. The woman’s family and small close knit community respond to the stranger in interesting ways. Short, easy read, evocative. Seventh Heaven by Hoffman explores a similar theme: what happens when a divorcée and her young son, who reads minds, moves into an outwardly “normal” middle class enclave, bringing a little, not entirely welcome magic. I almost wish a better writer would rewrite and develop these books - or even Hoffman. Neil Gaiman’s The Ocean at the End of the Land is outstanding, also a short, easy read but full of darkness and mystery, told by a boy somewhere between five and 12, who wouldn’t remember what happened that summer for almost 40 years.

    • @jenvcampbell

Just bought 'Blue Beyond Blue.' Thanks for the amazing reccomendations as always Jen! You have such great taste and I always find something that calls to my heart! Dark fairy tales, psychology, & Angela Carter! Yes please! (Would love to see an update video on modern fairy tales or retelling books/short stories that you love, in the future.) I'm currently writing a fairy tale retelling collection that intertwines autobiographical prose pieces. Its a meditation on memory (the blur between what's real and what isn't) and also looks at psychological trauma (the aftermath and the unlearning.) Do you have any more reccomendations off the top of your head for research that could help? Sending all the magic your way! 😊💖
