The Best Tractor Ever Was an Oliver!

  • The first tractor I ever drove was an Oliver 70. I probably should hold some fond memories of that tractor, but it was hard to start, hard to steer, and hard to keep running. It was very likely more a result of the lack of mechanical ability to maintain a tractor on the part of my father and me and less about the design of the tractor. When we traded the Oliver for a newer tractor with power steering we felt like rich folks.
    I got in a little bit of hot water a couple of years ago when I recommended against most of the Tractor Mike audience purchasing an older gas tractor. The reason was, I was constantly seeing people find a "bargain" on an 8N or and old Farmall to use on their property and spending all of their time trying to keep them running. Older gas tractors are getting some serious age on them and some parts are becoming obsolete, or at least very difficult to find, and expensive. If you don't mind turning some wrenches and spending time on line to find parts then you may be a gas tractor candidate. If you want to get off work, turn a key and start brush hogging, a newer diesel tractor is a better choice.
    Well, after I posted my anti-gas tractor video I found out that some people are really passionate about the older machines. After having a few death threats and some angry comments I vowed that I give the gas-burner enthusiasts a video for rebuttal. And, there's no better place to go to find them than the Ozark Stream Engine Association "Steamorama", held every September near Republic, Missouri.
    While the Steamorama was started to showcase the really, really old tractors, each year they also showcase the gasoline powered tractors that followed them. You see tons of old Deere, Farmall Allis, Ford, Minneapolis-Moline and Oliver tractors at this show and a lot of advocates for purchasing gas tractors.
    Sean, the guy in the video, is one of those, he owns 18 gas tractors, and he seriously believes the best tractor ever built was an Oliver 70. That, coincidentally, is the first tractor I ever drove, the one dad owned when I was born and throughout much of my young life. Sean has a nice restored Oliver that looks like our old tractor, in his collection, and many others. In the video, Sean tells the Oliver story, and why he thinks that if they'd have had better management in place and Deere would have been one year later with the "10" series, Deere might not be the global conglomerate they are today, and we might be wearing Oliver apparel and hearing country songs with "Oliver tractors" in the lyrics. Who knows if he's right.
    Anyway, I wanted to formerly apologize if I was a little too harsh on the gas tractors when I did my video recommending that my audience not purchase one. I really didn't want to hurt any feelings. If you like working on your own stuff, you're on a serious budget, or you just like nostalgia, maybe a gas tractor is your best option. Me, I want the thing to start every time after the glow plug light goes out...

    I grew up on a farm just north of fort Wayne, Indiana until I was 12. We had an Oliver 70 and Ford tractor. Dad would.plow with the Oliver and i followed by discing with the Ford. Divorce fo4ced the farm to be sold. Im 70 years old now. Great memories from the farm.

    I can remember back in the 60's working on my uncle's dairy farm, he had several Farmalls, but mostly remember him buying a M diesel and running all day on a tank of fuel ! The M gas was a gas hog, had to refuel before noon an refuel again to get back to the barm !!!

    I grew up running our Case 300 gas..when the loader was off for hay season that is...then when Grandpa had hart surgery one winter i had to teach myself to start and run the 1650 Oliver to feed round bails to the cows and Im very proud to say I now own that machine and use it to farm here in PA...I have other tractors to do the smaller jobs but that 1650 is and always will be old reliable

    My dad started with a 66 and a diesel 77 model. Eventually got a 88, 880, and a 1800. In the meantime my uncle had the JD A and finally a 3020. We worked with the neighbor who had a IH H and M. I drove them all as a kid but preferred the Olivers over all the others. Our 77 was the baling tractor due to the live PTO. The 77 was sold to a collector, but my brother still has the 66.

    I'm kinda partial to the old Farmall H & M tractors. When we started doing some farming, I was started out on them. Then we moved on up to the Case 730 & 831, International 674 utility, & Farmall 706 & 806 series tractors. I can remember my dad also having an old Massey Harris 44 at one time when I was younger too. Now I have a John Deere 4600 for the small hobby thing I do now. The list is a mix of gas & diesel tractors but, I enjoyed running all of them & wish I still had all of them today. Thanks for posting & stay safe.

    I grew up on a 3020 gas burner. It was a '68 model and we bought it to farm with in '70 and farmed with it continuously as a main tractor until 2000 when we got out of farming because the hog market crashed. It cultivated and disked when I was young because of the 1105 Massey and 1066 IH doing the tillage work. But every once in a while Papaw would let me get it hooked on to the 3 bottom plow or the 12 foot Burch disk and let me run it all day. I loved that tractor and still do today. For the sake of telling how much gas we burned the last year we farmed we farmed 650 acres and we had sold the 1066 to help pay for the losses on hogs the 1105 was for sale and was sold when we were plowing and the 3020 plowed about 200 acres with the 3 bottom disked all 650 twice and planted it all. Then the 4400 John Deere gas burning combine harvested it all while the International gas two ton truck hauled it all to town. When it wasn't being used in the field the 3020 ground, in Papaws words, "A couple million loads of hog feed." That's probably an exaggeration but it did all the feed grinding for 30 years. I got a little long winded here but I thought you would like to hear about gas not being all that bad. Of course in your defense my 1973 John Deere 4230 and 1967 John Deere 4020 are both diesel and I don't know if one could afford to farm with a main gas tractor now.

    I have a fully restored Massey 135 Perkins Gas and a New Holland TC40 Diesel and I don't like one more than the other, they're just different. The Massey still gets it done. Parts are cheap and easy to find and you can have a great running tractor for a lot less money if tillage and brush hogging is what you're after. The sound of the old gas tractors is what most of us remember growing up. Nostalgia plays a part with the gas tractors for sure...

    Was trying to add a comment and, as per usual, my fat fingers interfered. Anyway our family farm, in NW MO, latched onto an Oliver 1600(gas model)sometime about '63 or '64--if my memory serves me aright. We had several older Farmalls, mostly gas, as well as one or two newer diesels--Oliver and Ford. But that 1600 Oliver quickly became my favorite. Remember many a bitterly cold a.m. when it was only thing we could start. But, for me, the bonus was the exhaust tone. A person could crank that throttle wide-open and it was no more noisy than: "A hive of angry bees"--in the words of our hometown mechanic. Could spend 10-12 hours a day cultivating soybeans, ploughing(usually a semi-mounted 4 bottom), or whatever and at the end of same day at least my hearing didn't suffer. Have heard various folk claim that was mostly due to lower compression of the gas version or maybe some sorta' special baffles in exhaust manifold or muffler. Anyway was a pleasure to handle and "rock-solid" dependable.

    our first tractor was a Cockshutt 540 ,we trader a Cadillac for a Cockshutt 550 , than sold both for a JD 2130 with a loader , my favorite is would be the Cockshutt 540 because it is about the size of a modern compact tractor but more bulletproof simple gas tractor , than a modern tractor.

    I own a 1939 Ford 9n and the thing is still kicking. The funny thing about those types of tractors is that they were die hards very simple and are simple to fix. If anything in certain cases a gas tractors will be better than a diesel.Yeah it might not have Luxury and may not look nice but its a mans tractor. I also have a Diesel John Deere that quite bigger than the 9n but it also gets the job done. That is used to be a little more comfortable on the job but sometimes its to big. Point of the matter is that you can never really judge a tractor by its fuel type, but by the ingenuity and work ethic it can have. So there is never gonna be a best tractor, because it will always depend on the job and the person doing it.

    ya there is alot of benefits for a gas tractor as well as down sides. If you are mechanically inclined, they can be a cheap way to get horse power. They are easy to work on and get running, and parts galore. My dad still has his Allis Chalmers D15 after buying his kubota. He has had it for 20 years, and actually the dealer that sold it originally to the farmer that my dad bought it from is my wifes great grandfather. Kind of funny, so it has my wifes grandpas last name stenciled on the frame. But that aside it needed a clutch job and a motor rebuild about 10 years ago. ( first one it needed, hour meter broke at 4700) i can say there is probably close to 5500 or so as we used it for hay. But we took it to a small local farmer mechanic, whole job 1000 dollars. Now in 1997 when he got it , he bought it for 3600. so 4600 plus maybe another 500 for a rebuilt alternator and maintaince over 20 years.So 5 grand to run a primary hay tractor for 20 years. It still works good, and actually the kubota we run now, replaced a massey ferguson 202 workbull,( had some serious issues and more maintaince issues). I think in terms of a tractor, loaders get misused more frequently. A diesel motor offers more power and longevity for these harder use applications. Now a farm tractor like this oliver, it will run basically forever, just as my dads d15 does, just rebuild when needed and carry on.

    Mike, I agreed with your previous video stating that a gas tractor was not a wise purchase. It was a logical-based assessment and you wisely advised purchasers of the mechanical limitations and financial dangers with obtaining a said tractor. We should always put emotional attachment to brands aside, as loyalty to a brand is not a wise means to place one's financial investment. You offered sound advice, and there was no need to refute your previous video. As for Oliver though, the best-running diesel engine I ever saw in tractor was a Fiat motor inside of an Oliver 1255.

    I love diesels, they smell good and they have lots of power. But nothing beats the sound of an old gasser whatever the brand (preferably AC but Oliver and IH are good to, an obviously gotta love the Poppin Johnny's) although a diesel might overpower gassers, i still think the gassers are better, and in my area gas is cheaper than diesel so a gasser would be cheaper to run than a diesel. If anybody is going to buy a first tractor for a project or a tractor to use on their property, get an old gasser. But get a more common brand like Ford or IH because AC and maybe Oliver part are quite expensive.

    I like my 2 cylinder Deere’s much better than my Oliver 70. The 6 cylinder and other parts of the tractor a much more complex. The 2 cyl has more lugging power. You can rebuild the 2cyl very easily and much cheaper. And servicing the clutch on the 2cyl is much much easier. One thing about that Oliver I like is the more modern things, like the sleeves in the engine.

It is a brutal love hate relationship with it. Some days I wish it would curl up and die so I could scrap it. Seems like all it cares about is fuel in the tank and clean oil in the reservoirs. With those things it never fails to start and is always ready to work. I keep it because people like the sound for tractor rides during our heritage Festival.

    “Throwing spark plugs at my dog....”
    Hahaha. Lolol.
    I have both diesel and gas tractors.
    All Fords. Great machines. All of them. Don’t be scared of a gas tractor Mike. I know you spent all those years at the dealership taking them on trade, only to watch them take up real estate on the lot....but I don’t necessarily think that makes them a bad product just because they lost popularity.
    let’s not forget a few things here.
    1. Most gas tractors still have an engine of “industrial” grade...with strong blocks and heavier bearings.
    2. A gas tractor is much easier to start during winter. I don’t care how well maintained your diesels are...they don’t like starting at -20 temperatures.....
    3. Gas tractors are much easier to fix out in the field.

      Yep, first tractor I ever drove had that. There are six speeds forward and two reverse and there's a "double neutral", in other words, two different separate places you could be in neutral. Here's a link to a shift decal that shows where the gears are: www.tractorpartsasap.com/shift-pattern-plate-new-oliver-102682a-115180.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwnIr1BRAWEiwA6GpwNTJ5kLlyhcEdiM43m6GrhJVlVTSMJczmmpYlXzO8muD8dQ4aUP7n-xoC9uwQAvD_BwE. E-mail me at mike@asktractormike.com if this doesn't make sense and I may want to get your phone number and explain it to you while you're on the phone. It would take writing a book to explain it in print :).

    Nothing haul like a John Deere A at a tractor pull a real kinetic engine since both cylinders arrive at top of throw. Watched one 80 year old walk an A for a full pull for its weight class. Was his name John can't remember now?

    Mike this is great, love the old tractors. My dad is 84 and has operated tractors since he was a little guy. I love listening to him tell about all the machines he's driven, and his memory is still vivid and detailed.
    On gas tractors, do you think any of the manufacturers would develop a line of gas powered machines in compact/sub-compact range? I wonder if the increasing expense with tier 4 Diesel engines would make gas a cheaper alternative.

    • @TractorMike
      @TractorMike  6 років тому

      Yes, you're predicting a possible trend. Kubota is testing a gas engine for tractor applications. Here's a link to an article from Farm Equipment, a trade publication that goes to dealers, that gives background. It's near the end: www.farm-equipment.com/blogs/6-opinions-columns/post/14310-ahead-of-the-curve-eu-stage-v-will-require-dpf-on-all-off-road-diesels-deu.

      Good man! I also looked through your library for the Fuel filter change video you mentioned in this video. did you ever make that video?

    • @TractorMike
      @TractorMike  6 років тому

      NO...my bad. That reminds me I never changed the fuel filter in my tractor. I bought the filter and never put it in, now I wonder if I can find it. I did that video back when UA-cam was recommending that all videos be something like 3 minutes or less and I was trying to keep the time down. I recorded the oil change and went away and did the editing and upload and then forgot to do the fuel filter change. I'll try to get back and do that soon. Sorry for the misleading advertising :).

    Honestly I wish we would get back to gas tractors. With the emissions laws I feel Diesels have lost all of their advantage. I wanted a new tractor and I felt forced to stay under the 26 HP Tier 4 line in the sand. I really feel my 25.5 HP tractor is under powered. My tractor us used primarily for picking up stuff with the forks and moving it around. I barely can warm it up I can't imagine with my use being able to do a proper regen cycle with my usage. I think a modern gas engine would be better for many of us who aren't real farmers. I want a 4WD compact tractor with some real horsepower. With gas, you can easily have a clean burning quiet low maintenance non turbo compact 4 cylinder engine at 100 HP like are in most cars sold today. Just gear it down a bit more to make up for the higher RPM inherent on a gasser. there is no magic to diesel. I'm sure a real farmer who works his tractor all day every day will see an advantage in diesel, but I think the diesel advantage is more bias than fact and with the current emissions laws the diesels lose. I also think most compact tractors are sold to weekend warriors and not real farmers anyway.

      @turbotek-wj8vc 6 років тому +2

      Roger brings up a good fallacy here. Not so much the gas versus diesel fuel back and forth; rather the real farmer versus weekend warrior. I view a compact diesel tractor not as a real farmer disguise, but as a force multiplier. If you have given all week at your job as so many here do, it sure helps to have hydraulics to lift heavy loads and otherwise assist you in marshalling your property so it doesn't look like a jungle and can throw some food off for your family. We only have 30 acres to manage, but there is no way I could do it without my tractor (and barely do). As for emissions, buy the older units. Take that regen and hide it. The power developed by diesel per gallon is not a lie. What is a lie in my mind is the artificially high price when compared with the refinery costs.Anyway, I guess I'm trying to be a real weekend warrior instead of a fake one.

      Back when farmers were switching from gas to diesel diesel was quite a bit cheaper per gallon and the tractors used less fuel so there was a good saving. That is no longer true.

      No. The Oliver 70 we owned was the hardest steering tractor I've ever driven, we rejoiced when we got a modern tractor with power steering and I have no desire to go back. I'll still take my diesel 40 hp with power steering and hydrostatic drive. But to each his own...no judgement from here on the gas boys. Some of the restoration jobs are amazing!

    Oliver was the tractor in the 50's and 60's the the farmers in Northern Maine used. I used an Oliver 1750 to pull a potato harvester and loved all the gears to chose from.

    When I was little Dad had a 77 and a Super 88. The 88 I think was a diesel. Pulled a 3 - 16" bottom plow. It was a wide front and dad had a steering knob on the wheel. Always seemed to bust my knuckles on that darn knob while plowing with it. I might have been 10 years old. 1966. The 88 was traded in for a 4020. Huge change for our farm. That was progress for us.

    Oliver seemed sensibly progressive in the early days and AC seemed unusual in the later stage. I'm no expert just my thoughts. Day to day I use a Ford 841 diesel on my few acres piddling around which is nothing compared to earning a living off of your brand choice. Old timers generally know what they're talking about and had good reason beyond slick marketing hype. Seems to be more room for mediocre product today.

    Don't know much about Oliver.
    Hart Parr where imported into Australia but I don't think they were successful because of the heat
    I've seen Oliver crawlers they had brake steering
    I believe David Brown and fiat tractors were imported into the USA and sold under the green and white colours.
    Petrol or gas powered tractors lost sales in Australia because of heat and sudised diesel fuel.
