- A less well known intense Drama about a man's middle age crisis as he falls in love with a woman less than half his age. Superb performances by Frederick March who was nominated for Best actor Golden Globe, the incomparable Kim Novak, and the film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Also starring Lee Grant and Martin Balsam.

This taking down films has to do with usage and copyright. I agree I also like this film a great deal. And remember seeing it a long time ago. Looking forward to seeing on on YT when I saw the trailer. March is wonderful, as always....and Kim Novak really rises to the material....it's hard to lose with Paddy Chayefsky.

Does the Nina Simone song "Theme from Middle of the Night" have anything to do with this film? they were both made in 1959.
Fredric March was so creepy in this role. It has clouded every other role he has played.
Quite possibly the most cringe-inducing motion picture ever made.
And in THIS case, as a Chayefsky fan, this is meant as a compliment.
I thought Kim Novak’s acting was so bad in this film. She was all breathless and jumpy idk.
I'd b jumpy too around Fredric, he's so wonderful BTW I love Kim Novaks acting she is so gentle and fragile yet tough.
Kim Novak is wonderful in this film, as she always is.
That's her sexy act.
Can't say I was crazy about this movie. He's so embittered and she's so vulnerable that it appears he's taking advantage of her. They're both neurotic wrecks. I'm not saying it can't happen. It's happened many times. But the story is so deliberately slanted toward neurotics that I wasn't all that sympathetic to what was going on.
This is a completely misguided view.
Cannot comment with any authority on this film as I have yet to see it but you claim there is bitterness and vulnerability. This hardly surprising considering the condemnation and pressure anyone in this situation is put under from so called friends and family. There's always people in this life who want to run other people's lives instead of minding their own business!
