  • Watch Bryan put together a spicer ds 404. This video just kind of highlights the assembly process of these units. For those that don’t know this is a differential out of a semi truck. This particular differential came out of a 379 Peterbuilt. As with tradition this repair is done in house ‪@etrtruckcenterenginedrivet8918‬
    Thank you very much for watching.
    Have a great day!

    Coming from someone who used to work at a wrecking yard, this is a good honest person and should be ever so fortunate to buy parts from.

    Nice video. The audio is difficult to hear . This man has obviously built lots of these. I've changed alot of these units but never went any further than the power divider. Glad to see the rest of it.

    Good ole boys making It happen. I like you guys, 2nd video in and I’m hooked. I do have to say it blows my mind that your showing pride, expertise, skill and a way of life and got 2000 views. Then on the other hand some soft Fanny bandit sings a song blows all his money on tattoos and drugs, uses women and makes millions. Things are so upside down today, but you boys give me hope.

    Thank you sir! Question: if you wanted to, could you have changed your gear ratio while you're there? Or, is it true that your truck, being a 6x4, would require the back axle be taken off and that whole ratio change be done on that one, too?

    • @etrtruckcenterenginedrivet8918
      @etrtruckcenterenginedrivet8918  7 місяців тому

      Yes sir you have to change the ring gear and pinion on both differentials to swap gear ratios. If you only change one you’re gonna make big problems with both diffs really quick.

    One of our trucks international with old n400 with one locker with 3.91 gears front drive had me puzzled never seen this before as it was going down the road was smoking driver side front drive tires thought it was a brake issue but was not the case could you explain that to me please looks like it broke something in the differential itself as in the sand it was turning different rotation than the rear

    If the pinion bearing preload is so loose that you have to hold it with a pry bar to check backlash and drag it by hand to squeeze out pattern grease, then it is to loose. Preload is critical to the life of the unit. Also double check the ring gear runout by putting dial indicator on smooth back surface of ring gear, turn. Max allowed is .008" on the 404 if too much runout, unbolt diff cases, rotate 180° reassemble. It's a quality of manufacturing issue. Most good mechanics can build a rear that works but industry experience builds a better unit

    • @AC-mf8ou
      @AC-mf8ou 18 днів тому +1

      ring gear doesnt warp, case halves do. you check runout on the case halves before the ring gear even gets installed if you want to do it properly. If you're not doing this style of pre load on a 40k, your loads are too tight.

    • @captainaxle438
      @captainaxle438 18 днів тому +1

      @@AC-mf8ou wrong, run-out is checked after the ring gear bolts are tightened when gear and case are pulled together. You can check the case for trueness before that to avoid assembling a uneven case if you want. And what you have there is actually no preload. Preload technically can be measured with a torque wrench and socket on the pinion nut. Measurement is in inch pounds required to turn bearings. You have no preload obviously

    • @AC-mf8ou
      @AC-mf8ou 18 днів тому

      @@captainaxle438 Yup, and its not technically, thats how you would measure preload. As for the case halves, you're measuring the part that never changes, you are wasting your time. Measure the case half only.

    • @captainaxle438
      @captainaxle438 17 днів тому

      @@AC-mf8ou Sonny, case halves change plenty. They get warped and bent and they crack at the base from broken ring gear, bearings come apart, massive failure. They even flex during shock loads. Some models have an adjustable thrust screw in the case that is set .020 in to back of ring gear at pinion location to stop the deflection of the case during shock load. Checking run out with ring gear bolted to case is the gives the final result of what run-out is there. You have no comprehension of the power and weight involved in transmitting 1800lbs of torque to move 80,000 lbs of truck. An overloaded dump truck makes a turn onto an on ramp and leaves pieces of rubber on the road. As far as measuring preload it is the technical way to use a torque wrench because most all preloads are checked by feel. A light duty dana 60 average pinion preload is 28 inch lbs. Heavy truck is set much higher. And a free spinning bearing has no preload, duh as in this video
