The funny thing about David vs Goliath fight is that David basically got a medival equivalent of a hand gun he just shot the big guy in the head, thats how he won
Yes, it is. Many people have never seen a slingshot in their lives and don't realize how dangerous it is. A lead bullet fired from it carries about as much kinetic energy as a bullet fired from a Glock pistol. And although the slingshot bullets are heavier and not so aerodynamic, they retain a monstrous killing power at a distance of up to 100 meters. And when I say “monstrous” I mean that a hit of such a bullet in the arm, for example, can lead to a broken bone, and a hit in the head ends with a fractured skull. Of course the story of weak David against huge Goliath is a textbook example of an underdog, but in modern conditions it will be a UA-cam video like “Mr. Beast: I'm fighting against Conor McGregor, but I have a gun with me”. Doesn't sound all that impressive, does it?
Please read the fight, David wasn't pathetic by any means he was physically strong and slings are fine weapons but Goliath wasn't just a big dude he was decked out. Including a significant helmet. He actually survived the sling (likely because of his armor), and David stole his sword to finish him off. It's not a case of super obvious miracle like people like to portray it but David was definitely an underdog.
Given Goliaths equipment it's more fighting a special ops soldier, but I also have a gun. How impressive the fight is is commonly overstated but David was definitely an underdog
minor gripe, david doesnt use a slingshot, he uses a sling, which is different, since you spin it around to make the force rather than having any elastic
@@bobbytonson5890Goliath really showed up with a spear to a gun fight😂. He was the real underdog all along... The sling was not just a weapon for sheep herders. But an entirely qualified weapon of war. Hannibal for example even had entire slinger units in his army. Edit: That beeing said, I think Goliath was described as having a big shield. If he had just ducked his head behind that and charged, he would have won most likely.
Doppio vs Risotto is a great example of this in my opnion. Lots of people think he won because of luck (they paid no attention to the fight), when it was actually a really smart strategy that takes advantage of Doppio's surroundings and the opponent's own ability against him.
Also it’s ironic that Risotto lost due to Narancia’s stand which is actually the reason he found out Doppio’s a stand user, there are ppl blaming Narancia for this but if it wasn’t him Risotto would die way earlier
Seeing a 10/10 spoiler warning for a series that I just started watching was an absolute jumpscare I gotta finish watching it and then I can come back and finish the last few minutes of this video 😂
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, 100% THE must watch of anime. Easily the best piece of fiction and it's not even close. The biggest testament to that is I can tell you all of this and you will still be blown away from how good it is, including the fact that I'm saying it, ad infinitum. Don't skip the intros and watch the outros at least once each
@@Graxil Better than Attack on Titan? I'm doubtful but definitely intrigued. It's been on my watchlist for a while now, I'll come back to this comment after I watch it
@@YusufAli-zy8ze I've watched Attack on Titan, and it was better than I expected. I started back when season 3 was announced I believe. I think it's also great, though I think it suffered a bit in the later seasons, like game of thrones. It's not so much the outcome, but most things that happen make little to no sense the way they happened, the characters made many questionable decisions, it was kinda meh imo. Before that, I'd say it was 9/10, really loved season 3, but 1 and 2 were amazing as well. Compared to FMA, I'd say it's comparing an ant to a Colossal Titan. FMA is it. You can't make it better, simple as that!
@@Graxil Well that's a very bold claim. I still doubt it will be better than Attack on Titan, (AoT is my number 1 piece of fiction, and imo the last 2 seasons are the better than the previous ones, unlike in Game of Thrones) but I am very ready to be proven wrong.
I think easily the best David vs Goliath fight is the season 1 finale of Invincible. Upon first look most people will say Omni-Man won because he defeats Invincible but defeating isn’t the same winning. If we look at the character’s goal, Omni-Man’s aim is to convince Mark he’s right and subjugate earth under Viltrum’s rule. Mark’s goal is to get through to his dad and protect earth. And in the end despite Omni-Man being clearly stronger, Invincible achieved his goal, and Omni-Man doesn’t. Invincible wins the fight
TBH, “loosing the battle but winning the war” is almost the Tao of invincible from what I’ve picked up. Invincible looses a lot of fights but just stubbornly refuses to die and that’s enough to pull through Hell, even when he does win he often has reason to regret
I love this video! Another thing that I think is really good with David versus Goliath fights, sometimes the goal is just destroying the opponent's win condition. Like in Puss in boots, it's possible that death could just keep fighting him forever, he's pretty much a spirit or a concept or something. He would wear puss out eventually. But like you said when he doesn't "see" puss anymore, he loses his win condition. All characters whether they're heroes or villains, are slaves to their motivations.
Or like in Gon & Hisokas fight, Gon’s objective isn’t necessarily to win at all. Proving yourself or finding a different objective in a losing battle is very interesting too.
Fantastic analysis, love the breaking down of strategy into the 5 s's. In regards to Puss 'n Boots, I'd argue his entire strategy would fall under synergy and not sacrifice. Sure, he was giving up his wish, but he wasn't doing that to defeat death, he was doing it because he didn't need it anymore. As you mentioned, when he was at his lowest point in the fight, disarmed, disrobed, and afraid, he put all his faith into the smallest bit of love, and that was more than enough to start to fight back. At that point, he was no longer living to escape death, but to share in love with others. Synergy!
It isn't his Wish he was sacrificing, he explicitly says he sacrificed his ego(and also, his way of approaching the world and his adventures). Synergy is helping in the moment, and that doesn't factor in motivation. Yes, Kitty and Perrito were his motivation, but that's not synergy, that's...unrelated. As mentioned, Death cuts off any access to Stealth(Sneak Attack), Environmental factors(Surroundings), and, of course, assistance from others with that flame ring. And assistance from others is what Synergy is - and nothing else.
Just saying, 'Surprise' and 'Soft Spot' or 'Shortcoming' are good S options for 'Sneak Attack' and 'Spot of Weakness' That said, good insightful video, Thank you.
You brought up "hunter×hunter" and it triggered a memory in my head about the possible best fly swatting scene ever that feigned as a David vs Goliath fight. . . until the fight/slaughter fest started. . . And its when Kurapika brought a friggin shovel to a fight!!!
I'd like an underdog story where the underdog is the antagonist. The main character has spent a whole lot of time and effort to become the best of the best, and then all of a sudden some newbie who hasn't done the work threatens their spot, and the fight actually puts the protagonist in danger of the possibility that all their effort to become the best is going to be cut short and made useless.
Although I haven’t seen it, that sounds similar to what I’ve heard Cars 3 described as- a new generation of high tech cars make McQueen struggle to keep up, despite his large amount of experience and mastery
I'm a game master and I have issues with my battles, players say they're the least fun part of the game, and this sucks coz I love action. I'm taking notes in these videos and trying to convert it to a TTRPG scenario. Something funny is that in my campaign, my players optimized their characters so much they ended being the goliath instead of their enemies. I wish I had these videos when I was still the GM of that campaign, they are great insights on how to make a fight scene be more than a trade of blows. Thank you :) Keep up the good content.
One (questionable) peice advice I’d give- make the combat dynamic. Not necessarily hard (though it sounds like your players want harder fights anyway) but ensure the situation or the combats change up mid fight in some way. Mobility can be good for this, as can a second phase, but there’s a lot of ways to add dynamics Having a secondary obstacle in a fight also helps I find
@@Delmworks Wasn't a lack of trying. One of the battles was against this earthbending dwarf I swooped from a book, and four giant statues (which I changed the weapon they wielded each to match one of the four elements). Another one was a "siege" in a shelter against elven warlocks in an abadoned mine. Another one had a mystical archer atop of a tower than would shoot everyone he could see every turn, but at the ground there was a mystical knight hunting everyone taking cover. Weird mechanical being that would imprison spellcasters in its pocket dimension, forcing PCs and NPCs alike to work without communication from the otherside (since the battle still occured inside the dimension). My players said their favorite battle (up to that point) was against a plant-mask monster that at certain HP thresholds the masks would drop turning into smaller versions of that monster, though. And after all of that I still heard that the combat was the least interesting part of the game with some players completely losing their focus when a battle started.
@@saltycupcake9054 You could probably use fights with different goals rather than overpowering the enemy. One of the more memorable fights from my last campaign was basically a 10 rounds survival where the party members used every trick in the book including deception and fake surrender to stall for time against an overwhelming opponent. Plus, in the process they managed to deduce his weakness to abuse in a later fight.
What system were you using? Some game systems simply buckle under powergaming unless you specifically overtune your creatures and encounters, and/or they simply don't have the framework to incentivise interesting gameplay. Back when I ran D&D5e it really felt like none of my encounters had any impact, but switching over to Pathfinder 2e visibly made my players have more fun even in relatively simple combats.
The surroundings point is something thats very prevalent in the first two kung fu panda movies. In the first movie, Po uses his surroundings to keep Tai lung from grabbing the scroll, while Tai lung is too focused on killing Po over it. Thus leading to his eventual victory. In the second movie Shen uses his surroundings to bait Po into his eventual defeat via leading him in front of the firework canon. All the while Po is too focused on stopping Shen, that he doesnt realize hes on his turf. Very nice parallels from each film
Amazing work, dude. Really helpful and insightful breakdown. Everyone in the comments yelling about how it was a sling and not a slingshot, while factually correct, is missing the point entirely. Don’t let their pedantry affect you. Your mistake doesn’t take a single thing away from the points you made in the video.
Really like your examples/ background footage uses all types of media, action movies, cartoon shows, anime, older movies, and more recent movies. Keep up the good quality work
What an excellent video! I'm definitely binging this entire series. With regards to the final battle from How To Train Your Dragon, I'd argue that it includes 4 of the 5 strategies. It includes Synergy (between the teens as well as between Hiccup and Toothless), Spot of Weakness (as you described in the video), as well as both Surroundings _and_ Sneak Attack (since the attack in the clouds surrounding the Red Death is literally Hiccup and Toothless using the clouds as cover to perform a series of sneak attacks). The only thing that's really missing is Sacrifice as a strategy. I think some people may claim that Hiccup losing his leg counts as a sacrifice, but I don't think I'd count it since it wasn't his intention to lose his leg (or his life), even if he was willing to. I look forward to all your future videos!
22:00 this is also an example of synergy, as earlier in the show edward showed his weakness by converting the diamond of his skin into coal, whitch is how greed knew how to counter him
6:37 it actually totally is a strategy in boxing. In fact it's the strategy that brought down Mike Tyson. Thats part of what makes it cool. The undefeated bot could hit so hard everyone went down in the first round. It was literally the story of Mike Tyson
True. But from a story structure standpoint they'd been leaning on that the entire film, they had to do something to mix that up if they wanted a proper finale. (And they did use it in part, it just wasn't decisive.)
You can refer to Sneak Attacks as Surprise Attacks. For instance, the fight between Shikamaru vs Temari in Naruto. Shikamaru is aware that he cannot beat Temari in terms of the power department. That's why the only way he could beat Temari is to exploit her *Spot* *of* *Weakness* , catching her with his Shadow Possession Jutsu. Of course Temari is aware of this and does everything she could not to fall for that, such as measuring the limit of where his Jutsu can reach. This is where Shikamaru had to use the tools at his disposal along with the *Surroundings* to ensure his path to victory is guaranteed. Waiting so that the arena wall's shadow gets bigger and creating a shadow using his jacket as a parachute so that he could extend his jutsu. Then we get the *Surprise* *Attack* ; Temari was so focused on the threat in front of him that she didn't even realize she fell for a trap. Shikamaru lured her near one end of the underground tunnel that Naruto dug through in an earlier match to finally catch her with his jutsu.
20:45 of course FMA Brotherhood is a perfect example of every strategy type. It and Avatar the last airbender are basically perfect shows as far as examples of doing something right
Love the video, my only trouble for me was the Slingshot vs Sling thing that, many people in comments mentioned. That was legit almost a deal breaker, but I remembered how much I enjoyed the rest of your content so far. So I came back and finished it.
One of my favorite David vs. Goliath fight is the Impel Down Prisoners vs. Magellan from One Piece. At this point in the story, Magellan is a completely unstoppable beast and the win condition is just escaping. The final confrontation of Magellan chasing everyone from floor 6 to floor 1 has one first major win condition, they need to hold of Magellan for long enough to give Jimbe and Crocodile (and Buggy) enough time to steal a ship and help save everyone else. There is synergy as Magellan is coated in an extremely powerful venom so Luffy can’t touch him. This leads Galdino to help by giving him was armor to let Luffy hit him. This is only a temporary solution as the wax will eventually melt to the venom but it gives more time to stall. Galdino’s wax also makes a wall to hold him back a bit longer. Jimbe and Crocodile return with the ship and are ready to help everyone out of the prison. Then comes the second major obstacle. Impel Down is a major branch of the government considering it is the strongest prison in the world. It is surround by impassable gates that only the control room can open so while the Prisoners got to the ship, they can’t truly leave. But someone had thought of that. Bon Clay is extremely loyal to Luffy despite not being part of his crew. His power allows him to transform into anyone whose face he touches. The gates suddenly open and everyone is confused what happened. We cut to a scene of Magellan in the control room telling them to open the gates when suddenly Magellan bursts in. Bon Clay was disguised as Magellan and had the guards open the gates. He is sacrificing himself knowing there is no escaping for him, but he guarantees everyone else escape. Magellan asks him for his final words and then we cut back to Luffy crying as he is finding out what is happening. The Prisoners escape Impel Down.
And then Blackbeard returns, beats Magellan to a pulp with his new crew of the strongest prisoners from the prison and Bon Clay apparently survives because Oda hates killing off characters outside of flashbacks. God damn it Oda.
I feel like World Trigger demonstrates a lot of these aspects perfectly. Synergy, surroundings, and strategy are used in World Trigger like no other anime quite does.. I feel like it can demonstrate a lot of the concepts this channel tackles
One of my favorite movies of all time is Akira Kurosawa's Ran, which features both a flyswatting battle and a David v. Goliath battle, both of which are executed to perfection. During the flyswatting battle - the attack on the castle, the outcome is never in doubt. Instead, it's all about exploring the relationship between the brothers and showcasing their father's descent into madness, which is a huge plot point in the film. During the final battle, the weaker forces uses strategy, including surroundings and sneak attack, to ambush the superior samurai cavalry with gun equipped troops hidden in the surrounding woods. Moreover, it turns out that the entire final battle is a distraction to draw the attacking army out of the castle so it could be sacks by another force allied with the defenders (sacrifice and synergy).
This is my favorite series on the internet, its really informative and works as a perfect guideline when you actually get into writing fight scenes!!! Can't wait for the rest of the videos in the series to come out!!!

Yeah, and I can entirely believe it ending the fight in one shot, divine power or no. Those things were designed to take down now-extinct megafauna, and it’s pretty trivial to make one that can break the sound barrier.
@@fiascothe63rd The projectile itself doesn't break the sound barrier. I figure that you probably just meant the end piece, but your wording was confusing, and I would rather be informative. The sound barrier breaking is similar to a whip where there's some tassles on the end that take most of the energy transfer and do a quick flicking motion to relieve energy in the system
Left out an amazing David vs Goliath fight in Thorfinn vs Thorkell from Vinland Saga Amazing show, definitely would recommend to anyone over the age of 6
I like how, while there are different examples for each category, there are some shows and characters in those examples that repeat - like Gojo. And it is infinitely more fascinating to look at the same character written well in those scenarios.

My favourite David vs Goliath fight is Ninjago Season 9 Lloyd vs Garmadon. Specifically that one, and not the other battle where they are fighting a literal colossus. The win condition was set up beautifully with a call back to season 3- the art of the silent fist, to win without landing a single blow. It was the fight that fueled Garmadon, who survived being encased in lava by the mother of dragons, who seemed so unstoppable until Lloyd realised the win condition. To not fight back, but to resist. There was definitely synergy in the first half with the dragon, Wu, and Lloyd. I believe the weak spot would be the win condition, and maybe even surroundings were used. Speaking of, the Oni Trilogy (Seasons 8-10) also contains more fascinating fights like another David vs Goliath with the win condition being to get the baby to safety. There’s even more out there so if you had a chance to make another sort of video I would love to see Ninjago receive the recognition it deserves.
Oh yes and speaking of Toss Ups, Dragon Rising Season 2 has Lloyd vs Beatrix’s twin (I forgot her name right now) in the tournament of elements where there was a lot of fun use of powers!
Amazing analysis of the fights. I’m waiting for the whole series of analysis because they are so interesting to listen to. Also what is the music you use during the transitions because it sounds sick af.
The most underrated example I can think of is in Cyberpunk Edgerunner where David and his team got completely stomped on by Adam Smasher. But it’s never about killing Adam, David want to saved Lucy and get her to the moon. Which he did achieve. It’s probably the most soul-crushing thing I ever seen because while David win, he also loses. He didn’t get to be with Lucy on the moon
Gurren Lagann. Team Dai Gurren is fighting an omnipotent being capable of reality and probability alteration. They are only able to push through after multiple members of the team sacrifice themselves for an inch of the battleground. Evolving a little bit more with each turn, because thats how a drill works.
There is an entire light novel series about this David vs Goliath type fight (i like to call it drsgon slaying), Hsavy Object. It's a lot of fun, and by then end of the series the protagonists are so well known for pulling a win out of nowhere the roles almost reverse. Very fun stuff.
I honestly think Gus vs Walter uses all of the things you said. His weak spot, sneak attack, surroundings (no one is gonna kill you in a nursing home), sacrifice (both Walter’s humanity and hector), and a synergy with the two to a certain degree
not gonna lie Greed from FMA: Brotherhood is one of my favorites by far xd bro really went in with the "screw you i ain't fueled by selfish greed no more i'm fueled by my own morals and bonds"

Also it’s ironic that Risotto lost due to Narancia’s stand which is actually the reason he found out Doppio’s a stand user, there are ppl blaming Narancia for this but if it wasn’t him Risotto would die way earlier
Seeing a 10/10 spoiler warning for a series that I just started watching was an absolute jumpscare
I gotta finish watching it and then I can come back and finish the last few minutes of this video 😂
haha glad i didnt spoil it for you!
Invincible looses a lot of fights but just stubbornly refuses to die and that’s enough to pull through
Hell, even when he does win he often has reason to regret
@@shnitzel9052 Oh for sure, it's a fantastic fight for that exact reason
22:44 and I’d watch a 5 hour long version
Same here
@@Hanni_Himbeer true true
Agreed
"I could've made this video 5 hours long..." Please do it.
I fell in love with your videos, you are incredibly good at this!
Glad you like them!
I'd like an underdog story where the underdog is the antagonist. The main character has spent a whole lot of time and effort to become the best of the best, and then all of a sudden some newbie who hasn't done the work threatens their spot, and the fight actually puts the protagonist in danger of the possibility that all their effort to become the best is going to be cut short and made useless.
gojo fight from jjk?
Megamind
Although I haven’t seen it, that sounds similar to what I’ve heard Cars 3 described as- a new generation of high tech cars make McQueen struggle to keep up, despite his large amount of experience and mastery
@@a.j.7322gojo vs toji is kind of a good example
My thoughts exactly lol@@brandonm1708
I'm a game master and I have issues with my battles, players say they're the least fun part of the game, and this sucks coz I love action.
I'm taking notes in these videos and trying to convert it to a TTRPG scenario. Something funny is that in my campaign, my players optimized their characters so much they ended being the goliath instead of their enemies. I wish I had these videos when I was still the GM of that campaign, they are great insights on how to make a fight scene be more than a trade of blows. Thank you :)
Keep up the good content.
One (questionable) peice advice I’d give- make the combat dynamic. Not necessarily hard (though it sounds like your players want harder fights anyway) but ensure the situation or the combats change up mid fight in some way. Mobility can be good for this, as can a second phase, but there’s a lot of ways to add dynamics
Having a secondary obstacle in a fight also helps I find
@@daniellemurnett2534 We were using 5e, but players somehow didn't go full power gaming which left me the option to use combats as a narrative tool.
Yess!!! Please do the breaking bad David vs Goliath moments video. The show is soo filled to the brim with incredibly creative ideas
Excellent video, very precise analysis of each example.
FMAB is by far my favourite in this list, truly GOATed show
Hey, Real Steel mentioned in 2024, sick!
Honestly, this is my favorite series on UA-cam rn, keep up the great work!
13:44 well tbh, attacking from darkness is the original strenght of the night fury. Thats how it would attack on its own
Amazing work, dude. Really helpful and insightful breakdown.
Everyone in the comments yelling about how it was a sling and not a slingshot, while factually correct, is missing the point entirely. Don’t let their pedantry affect you. Your mistake doesn’t take a single thing away from the points you made in the video.
14:02 oh hey i'm part of that 2%
also thanks for including that aot scene, I was looking forward to you mentioning it and you did not disappoint
Real Steal is a goated movie!! Deserves a sequel with how CGI has evolved
Even then the CGI in that movie looks really good, and it's been 12 years (god, I'm old)
I would love a video going over all of Walter's David vs. Goliath moments
Really like your examples/ background footage uses all types of media, action movies, cartoon shows, anime, older movies, and more recent movies.
Keep up the good quality work
These lessons are superb! I make good fight scenes with my animations, but these teachings are making my works more refined! Truly grateful!
didn't realise just how small this channel is
amazing work, I watched all the videos on these battles, and have learned a great deal
I speak on behalf of UA-cam where I say a big fat YES to that Breaking Bad David vs Goliath video.
22:00 this is also an example of synergy, as earlier in the show edward showed his weakness by converting the diamond of his skin into coal, whitch is how greed knew how to counter him
at the rist of turning you into a top 10 channel, I would gladly watch a video that just goes over 10 more epic fights
Wish he saw this comment
Solid example that one. Continuity is part of the Surroundings after all.
So I came back and finished it.
you're _really_ good at quantifying these kinds of things. like you make it look easy!!!
Bro we want all the books you read on storytelling. You're a genius

Keep up the good work, your doing really well homie. The subscribers will come because the content is fire
You're one of the better writing channels out there, a lot of paid courses probably aren't as good as these videos.
@Squampopulous where's the toss up video?
HTTYD mention, sub earned. Seriously good video dude, keep it up!
I feel like World Trigger demonstrates a lot of these aspects perfectly. Synergy, surroundings, and strategy are used in World Trigger like no other anime quite does.. I feel like it can demonstrate a lot of the concepts this channel tackles
Yes definitely do a video on Breaking Bad’s David vs Goliath fights!
2.8% subscribers vs watchers is criminal, i refuse to let this stand. Instant subscription.
Another great video, wish I could have watched all of it, but I haven’t finished FMA:B quite yet😅
I look forward to the next two videos and what aspect of storytelling you’re going to cover next!
20:02 You missed that this isn't actually his signature move. This move would normally end with his blade pointed at the target, but in this case he switched it up and landed with his boots. I think this might even qualify as a sneak attack!
not only movies but anime too, respect this man

the jjk clips he put in this video hypnotized me back into that same feeling i had while watching jjk bro it was like the smell of the cartoon pie on the windowsill istg
David didn't use a slingshot, he used a sling
They’re also terrifyingly powerful
Yeah, and I can entirely believe it ending the fight in one shot, divine power or no. Those things were designed to take down now-extinct megafauna, and it’s pretty trivial to make one that can break the sound barrier.
@@fiascothe63rd The projectile itself doesn't break the sound barrier. I figure that you probably just meant the end piece, but your wording was confusing, and I would rather be informative. The sound barrier breaking is similar to a whip where there's some tassles on the end that take most of the energy transfer and do a quick flicking motion to relieve energy in the system
I like the idea of breaking bad’s David vs Goliath moments. Sounds cool.
how is the quality of your videos so good already? Natural youtuber right here
For someone who wants to write a show full of strategy, this video is sooo helpful
your videos have made me realize i'm writing a character who can best be described as a David Flyswatter which is interesting to think about lmao

Love your channel, dude! Also, I'd love to see all the David vs. Goliath moments in Breaking Bad.
I like how, while there are different examples for each category, there are some shows and characters in those examples that repeat - like Gojo. And it is infinitely more fascinating to look at the same character written well in those scenarios.
i swear, nowadays such old tropes must be explained to almost every writer there is. Cant even remember the last time i was having fun watching a well thought-out movie and that is not because i cant find fun in movies. Im not a writer but damn if i ever become one i'll make sure to use your videos as basis for action scenes
Ninjago has some of the best fight scenes in media fr fr

The thing about the real steel fight is that the fight was actually pretty close. The announcers describe the fight as war, with each bot getting in hits throughout the fight. It was only because the voice command thing in Atom broke that Charlie turns on shadow mode.
