How Walter White Defeated Every Single Stronger Opponent
🌏 Get an Exclusive NordVPN deal + 4 months extra here ➼ nordvpn.com/squampopulous It’s risk-free with Nord’s 30-day money-back guarantee! ✌
Breaking Bad is one of the best shows of all time. Some of its best moments come from how the writers fearlessly cornered Walter White into some of the biggest David VS Goliath type moments in TV history. Using strategy, however, he always came out on top.
In this video I analyze every single time Walter White was cornered by a stronger opponent, and how he brilliantly used strategy to help himself come out on top. I talk about my philosophy on fight scenes and put all of these Breaking Bad moments in the context of my Fight Spectrum Chart.

How THIS Scene Pushed The Godfather to Perfection
Переглядів 4,1 тис.14 годин тому
I know I'm late to the party, but I think The Godfather is a perfect movie. Instead of just yapping about how cool it is, I instead want to talk about what it is that makes a story perfect, and how The Godfather achieves it (hint: it's the baptism scene). Since the main topic of the video is perfection, I also talk about some other movies and how they fall short of perfection, or how they aren'...
Why Do Sad Robot Movies Hit So Hard?
Переглядів 11 тис.14 днів тому
With the Wild Robot’s release this year, I noticed a striking pattern with movies like Wall E and the Iron Giant: Robots Break Our Hearts. That shouldn’t be the case, considering a robot is nothing more than code and metal, yet I’m willing to make a bet that if you saw The Wild Robot in theaters, you cried. In this video, I break these stories down to determine what it is about robots that keep...
How A Fight Between The Strongest Should Settle A Story

The Fight Spectrum is a tool I made up in my first video titled "Why 90% of Fight Scenes Are Bad". It is used to analyze a fight scene based on the parties' strengths. This helps categorize every fight into one of four buckets: Fly Swatting, David Vs Goliath, Toss Up, and World Cup. From here I assign specific requirements to each bucket, and if the fight meets those requirements, it passes my ...

When the Ending Wasn’t Satisfying

Everyone loves a happy ending, but what every perfect ending has in common is not, in fact, happiness. Today I try to break down how to write a perfect ending to a story. I analyze two examples in this video: Uncut Gems and Sound of Metal. I believe these movies have perfect endings, and I don't think they follow a traditional structure. I talk about conflict, resolution, and introduce Kishoten...
When The Characters Make The Jokes, Not The Writers
Переглядів 502 тис.3 місяці тому
Who doesn't love a well timed joke? After all, laughter is the best medicine. What about jokes that... aren't well timed? Too often I see movies ruin their narrative and unnecessarily break tension by using comedy at the wrong times. There is a growing trend in dialogue where people are recognizing irony vs sincerity. People are sick of movies not taking themselves seriously! In this video, I b...
The (Almost) Lost Art of Intention
Переглядів 12 тис.4 місяці тому
I want you to think of the best movies and television shows of all time. Somehow, they all put the audience in that special place that only art bring us to. How do they do it? What does all good art have in common? The purpose of this video is purpose. I talk about how the Lion King 1994 is one of the most memorable and moving movies of the last 30 years, and how its successor the Lion King 201...
Why All Plot Twists Are Doomed
Переглядів 371 тис.4 місяці тому
What is better than a plot twist? My favorite movies all seem to have one thing in common: a fantastic plot twist that recontextualizes the entire story. Rather than talk about Plot Twists 101, this video instead covers something that nobody seems to be talking about, a phenomena I am calling the plot twist paradox. I cover some absolute classic movie including Get Out and Shutter Island, so le...

Why 90% Of Fight Scenes Are Bad (And Why 10% Are Good)
Переглядів 836 тис.4 місяці тому
A fight scene is a complement to a story's narrative. I think that all too often, writers seem to forget this fact. In this video, I explain a system I call the "Fight Spectrum" that categorizes every fight scene ever. I analyze several examples of both good and bad fights and break down my reasoning for why I think they pass or fail. Timestamps: 00:00 - Intro 1:08 - Prerequisites 2:43 - The Ch...

Your fight-scene rubic is quite excellent. Given its application here, I would argue that it is not merely a rubic for fight scenes, but for all conflict, violent or peaceful. I wonder how this could be applied in a text with conflict, but not necessarily violence. Better Call Saul would be a good example.

i think it's so funny that Ryan Reynolds in in a handful of the thumbnails of videos that talk about the loss of sincerity in Hollywood. the type of humor that he made himself known for in Deadpool (or even earlier in Van Wilder) works SO WELL with Deadpool because that's who the comic book character has always been. it doesn't work well in other instances because they're just an imitation of something successful without actually looking at WHY it worked and succeeded.

For the final fight vs Jack, I always thought that Walter assumed he actually was partnered with Jesse, and wanted to kill them both. Seeing Jesse's condition, he changed his mind at the last minute and saved Jesse instead.

I kinda disagree with the analysis on Dunes fight tho I do think that you identified a problem with it. After Paul drinks the venom we as the audience are left in the dark about Pauls inner thoughts so not showing how Paul wins is in line with this characterization. I do think though that this is a sign of a problem with how Pauls character change is communicated with the audience but idk how to articulate it

I think the far worse example from Marvel is the "Cheese Wiz" line from Rhodey while Thor is volunteering to sacrifice himself to try to correct what he sees as his biggest mistake in life. We had more than enough fat Thor jokes up to that point. And I'm not against fat Thor at all, I think it led to some really interesting character moments (and some good jokes). That one line is just really out of place in that pivotal scene in the movie but they couldn't help themselves.
