- ( www.TFLcar.com ) By now, we've shown our rugged, old-school 2006 Land Rover LR3 to be a capable off-road rig, but how will it hold up on a 1,300 road trip? Tommy finds out by taking it on a road trip all the way from Colorado to White Sands National Park in New Mexico.

Note: Hey all Tommy here, thanks for watching! Made it home today (over 1300 miles) with no issues! Rock on🤘
It is a brilliant vehicle and will take care of you if you take care of it. I did a 5000 km (3000 miles) across 4 countries (Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece) last fall in my 2005 Disco 3, including plenty of low range use. An airstrut began leaking at one point, but the leak was relatively minor, so we made it home (2000 km away) without issues. 600$ later, the D3 had new front airstruts :D
Coming from Mubi Adamawa state Nigeria as a lawyer, currently driving my 2003 Honda CRV with over 330000 miles.
I will love to have this SUV, it'll surely help us escape and with the terrains.
Do you people sell your used cars?
This is my dream car
I love it.
Especially when "you can sit all high off the ground, you can see the whole world...” love it.
These are honestly so underrated and such a bargain for the price, even if a few things go wrong.
a 80,000 dollar vehicle has a lot of driving to do to catch up in cost per mile.
@@philtripe They're 5-7k now. Did you not watch the vid?
@@philtripe got my landrover disco2 for free... only had to fix a few minor things on it throughout the years, its never broken down or left me stranded. Drive it 6 hours at a time pretty frequently between states. I'd say thats a pretty good bargain personally. No car payment so even if it did break I wouldn't mind.paying for replacement parts. Problem is no one knows how to properly care for these things.
I've had a 2006 for 12 years. V8. 170,000 miles. As long as you have a good Rover mechanic to maintain them, or can do it yourself, they are fabulous. Many off-road miles. Has never left me stranded. Love it.
The A Pillar trim clips are not reusable. Someone probably pulled the trim off before and didn't use new clips when refitting. Part number for the set of new clips is DHB500400. I've done two cross country trips (California to Nova Scotia, Canada and back) in my LR3 before shipping it to Europe and haven't had a single issue along the way.
There's also a tsb on the hole where water will get in under the a pillars.
I have one of these, same year but the V6. We travelled all of Australia in it, plus it’s been my daily driver for 3 years. Very good car tbh.
I drove my lr3 on 3 2k mile road trips around the west coast this summer, took it on Hells Revenge in Moab and drove it to 11k feet off road in 110 degrees, has 170k miles on it now. No problems at all
(Completely stock)
Tommy, I just bought the truck in this video from Jim, who bought it from you guys! She's now on the Alabama Gulf Coast! I have a higher mileage (189k) 2005 LR3 and replacing it with this one at 148k miles. Can't wait to hit some rallies. Doing the Seven Springs Overland next wknd and hopefully the Rover 75th Anniversary rally in NY in June!
Land rovers can actually be very reliable but only if there looked after properly
This is the very important point.
AMEN. But most are not.
@@jpqch7323 depends a bit on which country you are in.
Some regions don't send their "mechanics" to authorised training. Some do not have approved special tools. Some even use cheaper aftermarket parts. This is the beginning of the end with a LR.
Agree. Mine is very reliable. LR3
@a a It also uses the acronym RTFM. (read the f#*€in manual)
Unfortunately many don't.
This causes owners not to understand how to get the best from their vehicle and "mechanics" to bodge things.
I've a 2005 LR3 with 270,000 miles on it so you have years of happy motoring ahead. Enjoy
I love this body design, will never look old.... is like the Jeep Cherokee XJ and the 2005 to 2010 Chrysler 300
TheMELTDOWN911 XJ looks outdated...
Amc Pacer should be on that list
Xjs are timeless
Just completed a 2000 mile road trip with zero issues in my LR3. Definitely one of the, if not the most reliable rover to date!
Well if I had any Rover less reliable than a LR3/4 id have it pushed over a cliff pronto.... I’ve had an LR3 and only managed to put up with it for 10 months. I hope yours continues to be reliable .
The Oracle both of mine have been reliable for the passed 6 years.... what issues did you have with yours? It’s all about maintenance
The Oracle All about maintenance
Ar Al . I’m a mechanic of 35yrs....you have no idea what your talking about !!
The Oracle come on man, ı’m 42 years old and driving Discovery 2 and 3 for 12 years. They are just awesome vehicles. Every car brand have ıssues, including Toyota
love how people say land rover is a terrible buy but they have never bought one.
Do you need to be shot to know it’s painful?
@@davidboltzka5103 still an opion
I’ve got 220k on mine, taking it 4,000+ miles (round trip) for its yearly Colorado road trip !
Use black silicone adhesive sealant for the pillar trim, won't come off again...I have the 06 with 4.4L V8, had mine for 14years 140K miles very little issues if you keep the wear items maintained...did a 5500K trip with offroad without a single mechanical issue. Smooth as glass ride for long trips.
We love our 2006 LR3! Over 50,00 miles road tripping all over the western US last two years. Glad your enjoying yours!
I think we are more disappointed not to see it running through the sand dunes.
I've had my Disco3 for 13 years now. Got it when 2 years only with 2K miles on the clock. Now has 113K. Not bad for a 15 year old car. It's never let us down. It's great for towing our NATO military trailer. Just had all the lower arms replaced. The ride has now gone back to silky smooth. I'm currently sourcing a galvanised ladder chassis. Once I have that I'l transfer everything over and run it for another 15 years!
Hi Tommy I recently purchased a 2012 LR4. We recently took it on a 12000 kms road trip front just outside Ottawa, Ontario Canada to San Diego and back. It performs flawlessly. I have a service dog that travels with us everywhere and the LR4 is perfect for us. I also own a 2019:F150 and a 2010;XF. The JLR products get a bad rep but when well maintained and if you stay on top of you maintenance they are great
wow! is hard to believe how old, we* the Generation X, are getting, I remember when I was very close to buy a LR3 when it came out in 2004, the top of the line cell phone was the MOTOROLA RAZOR!! and everyone charged the phones at home, not in the car! No one even thought that few years later, a phone would be a touchscreen.... Man! im 48 feeling old!!!
TheMELTDOWN911 I am 42 and yes, YOU are old
I have owned a Discovery 5 for 2 years trouble free years and been thru some dunes. My last road trip 740kms I got 7.7 litres per 100kms and that includes over 2 hours in the city.
If it doesn’t have trim pieces falling off of it by the first ad I’d call it a win. Edit: Damn it.
Hello TFL, I take my 4.4 Range Rover Sport on long trips all the time and no problem four years in. Its also 2006, same basically as the Disco 3.
I really want an LR3. Currently I'm driving a second gen Honda Pilot, but as soon as I find an LR3 in good condition, I'm getting it.
I also have a 2006 LR3 SE. We have he 4.0 V6 and 3rd row. Runs strong - quick is not in it's vocabulary. It is our weekend warrior and hardware store supply hauler. Funny it has outlived out 2013 LR4 that had catastrophic engine failure (timing chain and guides twice, water pump and finally cylinder head) at under 62,000 miles. Although we have experienced many EXPENSIVE trips to the LR dealer we still hold on to LR3. These tend to have a cult-like following. Most of the issues are relatively minor and some I have tackled myself purely by reading up on forums or youtube videos. My wife actually prefers taking the kids in the LR3 over her BMW X3 M. Those A pillar trim pieces came off on mine as well. New clips and I put a small metal tapping screw in the top for extra measure - painted it black and it isn't noticeable. I've seen people use silicone as well to ensure water doesn't get in.
Once the air suspension gives you trouble, and it will, I highly recommend switching to coils. Especially if you plan to do a lot of off-roading. I did and I love it. The ride is awesome, just as smooth but without the sponginess. And the thought that I don't need to worry about loosing a pump, breaking an air line, pooping an air bag... Priceless. Cool upgrade are the coils with a 2" lift already installed.
How expensive is switching?
@@roslynayala6300 1100 if you or someone do do the work for you. www.roverparts.com/suspension/air-coil-suspension-kits/L319SRK-A/
What’s the update on your truck?
Have you had any axle trouble or driveline trouble with the lift?
They run perfect. Highly recommend. Atlantic British sells the kits. They have a couple options depending on what your looking for.
I own a 2007 SE and love it. As my mechanic says, once everything has broken and been fixed it is actually very reliable. The best part about the shades on the sun roof is that it is a great bug screen when you are camping in it. Nice design touch
I love my 2006 LR3 .. tough , durable and reliable.. awesome vehicle …I’ve seen , chevy , fords toyotas stuck in same places im driving around with no problem..
Really cool area for filming the video...you did a excellent job on the Land Rover update..thanks again Tommy
I have a 97 D1 and it is one of my favorite cars, it it super reliable considering it’s a Land Rover, it is in my opinion better Offroad than a Jeep, and I just love my little 4.0 V8 it hauls ass
Simply Amazing, such a lovely piece of Craftsmanship!
Tommy you clearly love Land Rover Discoveries... TFL should kit out a LR4 ... just do it 👍🏻
Thanks for the update Tommy. Nice to see TFL outside of its comfort zones of the normal places you frequent. Keep them coming. :)
This vehicle is built for off roads and cross country. There are several reports for it making it through the whole of Africa including deserts, wet lands, savanna and rocky hills. Questioning this superb (probably best) „man for rough and tough jobs“ on this one is like asking do I surf the waves with the best board available. By the end the driver has to know its baby in all kind of issues and should be able to drive the rest does the vehicle for you.
I had the same problem with my a Piller cover. High winds did it. Not cheap. I put jb weld in the metal where the clips would lock on. Then drilled the cover and screwed it down. Then used electrical tape very carefully as a seal to keep wind out.
2001 disco2 with all the goodies.
Quite a handsome car IMO!
The snorkel is to keep the intake above the dust more than for wading. It’s very useful if you’re beach driving or soft reading.
Jenna Marbles?! Didnt even know she was still around 😅😉 good update Tommy!
Parts of the car been flying off on the highway, probably decapitating someone in the future
"This car has been dead reliable"
Tommy, for a reliable vehicle you sure say "dead" a lot! :D
Foreshadowing... lol
So Many 'Features'...I Love about this model! ..split Tailgate!!...air suspension.. Dual sunroofs....Cup holders!!...square old school shape ( lots of 'Storage' )!. dual ZONE AC!!!. 'stadium' level backseats!!...Great Stereo!......again just 'worried' about the 'Reliability'??.....ooooh..'Decisions'!
I got a 06' with 86,061 and thinking of driving to Carmel=by=the Sea this fall. Nitto Terra Grappelers run smooth and ... don't tell my wife.
I’m about to ‘inherit’ a 2011 Range Rover Sport HSE with around 90k on it. I love the truck but I have to admit that it makes me a little nervous because I’ll be picking it up then immediately driving it 6 hours of interstate highway home. I am encourage to hear that your trip was so uneventful! Wish me luck!
That original snorkel is not designed for going into deep water, it's for getting cleaner air into the intake.
Awesome Find.!!!! I have a 12 HSE and it is Excellent
Well Tommy and TFL I hope you LR LR3 gives you more trouble free riding. My brother-in-law bought a Range Rover in 2003, yes new, and it gave him no end of expensive troubles.
The troubles kept on happening during and after the warranty period. What a total P.O.S that Range Rover was..!
That's a BMW era land Rover. The LR3 is a Ford era vehicle sharing many parts with other Fords. The BMW land rovers tend to be the worst.
Your brother’s Range Rover was basically a X5 from the dark ages of BMW. It had the same engine/electronics from the 7 series. The LR3 has the Jaguar V8 and it’s pretty much bulitproof.
Don't ask me how I know this: If you make a cruel stop, that air compressor and any other loose gear will become missiles hitting the front windshield. Or your heads. Please, use a cargo net or cover to restrain the loose gear.
I see you have a blurred spot in your radio display. I had the same issue with the 3 Land Rovers of this model I had. According to the dealer, to solve the problem you have to change the unit, with is obscenely expensive. An independent shop was able to change just the display.
Based on my sample of 1, my Discovery 4 has been rudely reliable. Bought new in March 2013, it has now covered 111,000 miles. It has averaged 31mpg (the larger imperial gallon admittedly) from its 3.0 V6 Diesel engine (255hp and 600nm torque). In that time we’ve bought the Landrover extended warranty every year until it reached the 100,000 mile limit. We should have saved our money. It’s need two MAF sensors and a water in fuel sensor over 9 years in addition to the usual tyres, brakes and bushes.
The windscreen trim is a well known issue here. A windscreen stone chip required a replacement and the fitters automatically bring replacement trim pieces because once removed, the clips always break. Your LR3 probably has a replacement screen and the clips broke when it was changed.
They need good maintenance and, like complex and capable people, don’t like to be ignored.
I hope it continues to give good service.
I have a 2006 4.4 LR3 HSE. It's funny about the motors and mpg. I just got back from a 'tour' in UAE and was steady at 20.7. I have hit as high as 23. When we come back to the US I'm looking for a LR3.
Extended warranty has gone from $4.5K to $8.8K for 3 years! Cost more then the LR3 now! LOL!
HW2800 you can thank #DougDeMuro for that.
Is the title a serious question? Any Land Rover will last through a 1500 mile road trip.
As people who run various auto channels, you think changing a thermostat would be an in house job.
Picking one up today for 4.5. Looks to good to be true. Im carfax is clean I’m on high alert
Love your guys videos my fav channel! Tommy what’s that light bar bumper you got in the middle with two aux lights on? If anyone could give me the part number or something? Thanks! Rover all day long
Looks like winter in Minnesota. Great videos Tommy!
Why dont you use a bluetooth receiver on your aux stereo input..?
You remind me of what a friend from Australia said to me, if you want a vehicle to take you to the outback take a land rover, if you want a vehicle to bring you back from the outback take a Land Cruiser
Yawn. Written by Toyota ad agency.
@@miyahtallulah no, by someone who has an old Toyota that won't die
Same thing about the A pillar trim piece flying off on the highway on my 02 D2. You would think LR would have redesigned it for the D3. Even with all the issues I still miss it. Got me wanting another LR!
How you guys consider even decent driving 7km with 1 liter of gas still is a mystery to me. How much do you pay the gas?! Here where I live it's 1,8 USD per liter, means I would spend 42USD every 100 miles only on gas. Your 1320 miles trip would cost me around 550 USD in gasoline, to give you an idea.
That driving position is amazing. I cant get with the large pillars and high doors on most modern suvs and cuvs. Only new vehicle that is similar is a full size pickup.
Please keep updating us on the LR3 ive been thinking of buying one
I used to owned Discovery 4 and it was very very good
Of course it will
Go to Red Sands in El Paso Tx its the same but red sand
Tommy, would you mind measuring from the trunk floor to the ceiling to give that height measurement. I think the Disco 2 is a little taller and wider - would appreciate the numbers. Cheers.
What i really want : this, with toyota body and electrical, isuzu engine. IFS and leaf axle on back. Thats it. It wont make a ton of power. It wont go rock crawling. But it will make a hell of life-long car.
I bought a lr3 tdv6 2007 335kms Best car ever 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Awesome trip Tommy 👍🏼, hopefully this truck will done it still burning gas 😄😄😄
Oooh...16MPG = No bueno. Especially since you were not off-roading. Looks like a great trip anyway 🤙
Thanks!
I was assuming you meant on the back of a flatbed tow truck.
Hey man! Can you informe where and what part number is the thermostat you mentioned. It would be a big help. My Discovery 3 V6 2005 have been suffering about same problem but can’t find where is that thermostat. So, it gets hot because the fan doesn’t turn on when it was suppose to do. I bought my last year and no success to find this thermostat.
Thank you very much for your videos. I have been seeing them all. Love them.
Any auto upholstery shop can add seat heaters in a single day, leaving you just to connect 12v power switches. Reasonably.
Have you used the power mode for quick speed?!!! I’ve outran many vehicles when I want to quick pass! I’ve had this car (SE not HSE) for 7 years with 95k miles and have 150k now. I’ve had to put some money into it but I’m still driving my dream car and loving it! 💖
Noooo man Discovery 2 is the best car ever
Do I spy nitto all terrains? Beautiful scenery but yeah I’d be sketchy over this brand of car as well. Interested to see what happens this trip lol. I must admit though..the truck looks nice. I love the Black and Tan
Usually there is a Aux port inside glove box comp.
Hey Tommy you’ve changed the price a few times already. What did you actually pay for it?
1:57 Rover learned that from Explorer...lost both of them on trip from Houston to Sacramento
get an idrive throttle controller, best thing i have on my TDV6 D3 so much more control on the pedal
Snorkel needs to hook up to a cold air intake and put in a custom exhaust. Should help a lot.
of course a snorkel is the ultimate cold air intake...but for the length adding restriction
I love my LR3.

Did you sell the Discovery 2 ?
Lmao I had the HSE and mine flew off on a road trip from Florida to El Paso. Lmao. I replaced it with a part from eBay $35.00.
Nooo. How can you have your vehicle that cluttered?
They are on a trip. Geez dude

The 2000-2007 Gmc/Chevy Tahoe/Yukon/Suburbans are a better bargain for a larger vehicle.
Eighty bucks, for a thermostat? You have to be kidding. kidding.
