I love one thing about Stalone's performance with Rambo. Rambo says very few words through the entire movie, but everything he does say has weight and meaning.

Eadig, after the Vietnam War, there were a lot of Americans who were just horrible to veterans. In 1983, when I transitioned from being in the Marine Corps, full time, to the reserve, there were over 250 businesses in Albuquerque that refused to hire me because I was a veteran. Finally, a hotel followed federal law and hired me.

He's not lying. Both the left and right treated these great men as unwanted. The left called them baby killers and the right considered them loosers. Even though American Marines and Soldiers won every battle. Politicians wouldn't let them win.

Just in defense, yes the treatment was unfair and indiscriminate. There is no excuse for it but civilians, first the young but then more and more, tried to protest to the government but they were shot down over and over. Finally, enough people of all ages and background were protesting and Congress finally shut down payments for the war. In the course of this, blame shifted from the politicians to the ordinary soldiers. But I remember in the early 1980s the military was looked poorly. Now Liberals and many Democrats are still paying the price after 50 years.

I personally never served, but I’m very good friends with a couple of guys who served in Vietnam. They still don’t get enough credit for the shit they had to put up with when they came back after the shit they dealt with while they were in country. I’ve got nothing but respect for them, and everyone else who fought for this country, no matter what war they fought in.

Vietnam vets were treated horribly upon returning home. Often targeted and harrassed. Stallones ending monologue is one of the best scenes put to film. Something that seems to be lost on most people is that the sheriff is a Korean war veteran, you can see his medals behind him when he sits at his desk in that one scene and a few subtle remarks between Troutman and Teasel throughout the film make this clear. Vietnam got so much attention during that era that Korean war vets were essentially forgotten altogether, that war even being referred to often as the forgotten war. So, maybe the sheriff didn't like Rambo in his town because he reminded him that he and his buddies who served in Korea were being ignored by the nation, maybe he didn't like Rambo because he felt Vietnam was being fought dishonorably, but I don't think he dislikes Rambo just because he's a drifter.

The long hair would have triggered him big time too. I knew guys from the Korean war era, my uncle being one of them. According to the novel, The reason why the sheriff had such a grudge against Rambo too, especially after he learns he is a Vietnam vet, is that he too is a vet, but he was in the Korean war, aka the “Forgotten War”.
Even today, most don’t know it happened since it’s skipped over in some schools.
But, though the movie doesn’t openly mention that, you can see that the sheriff was in fact a vet, using terms and tactics that he had learned from combat.
And a couple of times, in his office, you can glimpse the Purple Heart medal he has.

The country was a very different place during the war. I was born in 1981, but my father was in the air force at the time. Unfortunately I have some back problems, and I could not in list. Now a days our soldiers are hailed as heroes, as they should be, back then they were vilified but that is a whole other conversation. PTSD is very real, even for regular people. I lost my best friend to a motorcycle accident in 2008, til this day I am terrified of motorcycles.

1:56 "Wait. So, like, someone _fights_ for their country, comes back home, and they're like, 'Nah. We don't want you.' It's pretty messed up."
Yes, and it's all the stranger with Sheriff Teasle. See, Rambo is a veteran of the _Vietnam_ war. Teasle is a veteran of the _Korean_ War. Apparently, everyone remembers the war in Vietnam, while the war in Korea has been largely forgotten, although our efforts, there, are the reason South Korea still exists, today.
We also managed to pull off with Korea the kinds of results that kept _eluding_ us in Vietnam. We managed to fortify the border between North and South in such a way that the North Korean Army and their Chinese reinforcements just couldn't break through, thus ending the war in a stalemate, and we managed to reach that point in a little over three years.
Korea. Fought a little over three years. Ended in a stalemate.
Vietnam. Fought for not quite 20 years. Ended in defeat.
Yet, nowadays, Vietnam veterans are remembered and revered while Korean veterans are forgotten.
But, seriously, consider it. Have you ever actually _met_ anyone inclined to hold Vietnam veterans in low regard? I mean, while we, as a nation, were on the war path with Afghanistan and Iraq, I persistently observed efforts to conflate objection to the war (either one) with objection to the troops _fighting_ it. I can only presume it was much the same with Vietnam.
But this I take for a reason public objection to Iraq and Afghanistan was a bit more steadfast than public support for Vietnam. With Iraq and Afghanistan, every single member of the Armed Forces we sent was a _volunteer._ With Vietnam, we relied heavily on _conscripts._ Why was that necessary if our troops _themselves_ supported the war?

A lot of Vietnam vets ended up with severe PTSD and became homeless drifters after the war... usually due to VA hospitals substandard mental health services and veterans benefits. Homeless vets wearing their army jackets were a common stereotype... which is what Brian Denehey's police chief character is alluding to. The military is great at training soldiers, and breaking them... not so much into unbreaking them. My dad was one of the luckier ones. He had PTSD but was able to find a good job that became a career... but a lot of Nam vets werent so lucky.

Stallone's monologue at the end is EPIC!
The Vietnam war was the first war covered in real time on the nightly news. Anti-war sentiment was high. Some soldiers did unthinkable things ( see Mai Lai massacre) Returning Soldiers were often greeted by protesters, rather than parades.
I recommend "Full Metal Jacket" 1987 & "The Siege of Firebase Gloria" 1988 for Vietnam war movies. ("Apocalypse Now", "Platoon", "Casualties of War" are also excellent")
Also "Dr. Strangelove" 1964 & "Fail Safe" 1964. Two different takes on the Cold War.

When they returned (if they didn't die), they were spit on, mistreated, called baby killers, and completely ostracized by society. The worst part was they were mostly the poor or lower middle class kids - the rich kids went to college or otherwise bought their way out of serving. I never had to go overseas at the time, but I was in the military and saw all that crap first-hand. Those were dark times for America

You weren't wrong to really feel for Rambo when he's injured freefalling from the cliffside into the tree. Stallone did the stunt himself and was in legitimate pain when he lands on the ground and screams in agony. The fall broke one of his ribs.

when rambo jumped off the side of the cliff and into the trees ... that actually hurt him (he did some of the stunts) in a howard stern interview, he said he dislocated one of his shoulder while jumping into those trees.

One little-understood complication we ran into in the Vietnam War was with our ignorance over basic psychology. See, when someone ships off to a branch of the Armed Forces, they go through several weeks of basic training for the purpose of taking someone accustomed to functioning in the civilian world and training them to function in the Armed Forces.
It turns out, this process has to be reversed. You can't just take someone in the Armed Forces who has reached the end of their tour of duty and send 'em back to the civilian world. You have to put them through about a month of _retraining,_ first, so they know how to function in a world at peace.
We were not aware of this fact, because in _previous_ wars, this necessary effect was always achieved with something along the lines of a "long march home." If you're marching home, with your unit, your unit behaves _differently_ from when they're marching off to war. They're quite literally putting the war _behind_ them. They're sharing anecdotes about what the different people in your unit went through that they can't really be sure anyone _outside_ of their unit will understand. Over a period of a few weeks to a month, this has a palliative effect, so you can return home with peace made with your memories and your unit.
Vietnam was the first war in which our technology was advanced enough that the _literal_ "long march home" was no longer necessary and we were not aware of the psychological need that still persisted, so we took to just sending our troops home, again.
Now an effectively trained military unit is trained to fight as a _team._ When the people in that unit start getting cut off from each other, they pick up on it instinctively. Something is going very wrong. They start to experience paranoia, because they don't understand the mechanisms that are cutting them off from the other members of their unit.
The end results caused a lot of PR headaches for Uncle Sam, and that's why we make it a point, nowadays, to carefully process someone _out_ before we send them home.

Nah, National Guard back then were known as "Weekend Warriors". Doing it for supplemental income like a second job and going camping to get away from the job and family for a weekend. They didn't become hardend combat soldiers till Desert Storm.

I see all these younger reactor watching this and in the beginning where the Sheriff is giving Rambo a hard time they immediately say they don’t know why he’s giving a veteran a hard time.1) I love that we try to take care of our vets now and show them respect . But that wasn’t always the case. After the Vietnam war lots of people treated returning vets like garbage because the war wasn’t politically popular. That WHY those vets made sure the next generation understood how big a sacrifice it is to go to war and we treat them better now. 2) I was a kid in the 70’s and 80’s, and those M-65 field jackets like Rambo is wearing were common as dirt. Everyone from jr high kids to college kids, homeless guys to hippies had one because they were so cheap. So Teagle doesn’t necessarily know Rambo is a vet by his appearance. He thinks he’s dealing with a bum.

Rolling thunder is one of the best coming home from Vietnam movies. Hate that nobody reacts to it. It’s really good and one of Tarantino’s favourite movies as well.

This is the first review of yours that I’ve seen, I enjoyed you very much! I’ve even subscribed! Btw, my Dad was a combat veteran, as a young boy, I actually witnessed him having a flashback. It was so traumatic for me. Rambo’s meltdown at the end is always tough for me to watch. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your content, well done! 🥰

I was the lead as this Marine Corps in the infantry and I can tell you right now. The hierarchy is Boy Scouts and then just above Boy Scouts is National Guard and then just above National Guard is Air Force and then comes the regular military.

If you read the book First Blood Teasle is jealous of him Teasle was a Korean war vet and in real life Brain Denehy who played Teasle was a Korean war vet and he actually gave Stallone pointers on PTSD they were both very good friends up until Denehys death

This movie launched the lone tough guy action movies of the 80s. Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis, Schrawartenneger, Kurt Russel, Keven Segal - all of their action movie careers came about because of Rambo.
