“Back there I could fly a gun ship, I could drive a tank, I was in charge of million dollar equipment! Back here I can’t even get a job parking cars!”
One of the hardest hitting lines that sums up what life is like for veterans after a war. Incredible film.

And that was only Rambo and his inability to turn it off. The sheriff was also recovering from War and he couldn't turn it off. Something was going to give, and they had no control.
Vets, I stand for you. Not just because of the things you saw or had to do to protect our way of life, but because when you came home that your home no longer felt the same, almost like you were in a foreign land. I can't help you much, but I can hold a door and say "Hello!", and I've got a warm couch and a sack of tacos if you need it!

@robriginio530 - The quote is, "I can't even hold a job parking cars!". Yes, he was a vet, he must have been employable and got jobs once he returned, but he was such an emotional basket-case (obviously) he couldn't "hold" on to the job. Would you want that guy to park your car? He'd probably take off in it, drive it through front window of a Vietnamese restaurant, kill all of the employees, then blame it on the tough time he had during the war. I think I'll pass on carrying the liability of having that guy work for me. It was a good movie with a terrible ending. Rambo was like a mad dog. He needed to die at the end for all of the harm he caused. Rambo does not deserve our sympathy. Let's ask the kid, who got up early every morning for years, saved the money he earned from his paper route to buy a motorcycle, gets pulled off that moving motorcycle and slammed to the ground, his bike stolen while he lies injured on the pavement, what he thinks of Rambo? I'll bet troubled soul wouldn't be the first words out of that kid's mouth. How about the two police officers Rambo runs off the road into a parked car, there's a collision and a fiery explosion, their bodies burned beyond recognition. Do you think those dead police officers families would like the opportunity to give Rambo a big hug and tell him they understand? He needed to die. It was the only logical ending. That would have made it an incredible film.

It's not really clear in the movie, but the Sheriff was a Korean War veteran who resented Vietnam veterans, which apparantly was a thing. It was explicit in the novel.

John Rambo was a innocent man just trying to live a peaceful existence. He was ridiculed and tortured by the police and it forced him to strike back. They drew first blood. My cousin was in Vietnam. It was hard on him and he is permanently altered by it Sylvester Stallone outdid himself in this movie. It is a great one and well worth your time.

This was by far the best of the Rambo series of movies because it took the subject of PTSD seriously. It's based on a best selling novel which ends much differently from the movie. Stallone's closing monologue deserved a lot more critical acclaim than it received at the time. After this, the producers just looked to cash in and turned Rambo into an action figure/cartoon character. They were good action movies but totally over the top compared to this one.

A lot of hesitation came from the studio about Rambo's final breakdown in the film. Stallone fought tooth and nail for the scene, noting he felt the soldiers who were going through similar push-back from society needed their story told. The stories Rambo rants about in those final moments are real stories.

This was Based on a Novel (First Blood). Sylvester really loved the story and pushed to make it. the Novel explains more about Teasle's (and Galt's) attitudes towards John and Vietnam Vets. Different ending as well.
During Vietnam they changed the Terms "Battle Fatigue" and "Shell Shock" to PTSD and changed what the Term Meant. Now it's almost considered a "common illness" for anyone that feels "Traumatised". A Civilian that got PTSD from something (like an abusive Partner or a fender bender) is compared to a Vet that lost an appendage in Combat, or lost their entire squad.

The end monolog is one of my favorite parts of any movie. It didn't just explain how he felt in the movie, but how many veterans felt coming back from that war. Real life affects. Remember, during that time, 18 year old boys were drafted and had to go to war. They had no choice. My other favorite monolog also comes from Stallone in Rocky Balboa (Rocky 6). His speech in that movie!! Great reaction!!

I think his breakdown is incredibly well-scripted and acted, because it shows the trauma response in action. When in shock, the mind latches on to specific impulses or details, giving them the same importance as survival: telling the story about how his squadmate loved driving his car, but when he lost his legs from the bomb all John could think about was finding his friend's legs so he could drive his car when he got home. When you read the words by themselves it sounds like a joke, but when you add the emotional dimension of a person who is confronted with how absolutely helpless they are, it takes a deeply tragic tone.
People like to make fun of Stallone for his accent, for his career of playing musclebound meatheads, but the man has always had an incredible sense of narrative awareness and emotional depth in both his writing and acting. Drama, comedy, the man could do it all before the film industry decided to shove him firmly into the Action Guy box and rarely let him out.

To give some historical context, Stallone had just finished shooting Rocky III (1982) when production started on this film.
And having been sent to the hospital after his bout with Thunderlips (Hulk Hogan), he would be sent back to the hospital after jumping off the cliffs…for the fourth time. Three times prior, he did the stunt, and it worked okay. When he did it the fourth time, he was injured.
The score for First Blood is from Jerry Goldsmith; who was known for scoring two classic sci-fi films; Planet of the Apes (1968) and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979).

Based on a best-selling novel from 1972 by David Morrell.
Released in the same year as Rocky III.
The beginning of Sly's 2nd iconic film series and he hadn't intended to make it so.
This first installment adapts the novel with balances of the emotion, suspense and action.
Looking at the realism of soldiers at war with themselves.
PTSD is nothing to play with and soldiers of such woes deserve to heal.
Through Rambo's eyes we see the mistreatment of vietnam veterans,
uncalled for actions by corrupt, ignorant opposition.
Someone on the humble being forced to not back down and fight back.
Rambo's struggle and presence definitely gave this town something to think about.
This is one of Stallone's best as actor, writer and
ultimately becoming an action icon in his career.
The late Richard Crenna as Col. Trautman was perfect casting.
He put a face on what makes him Rambo's mentor and only real friend.
The sequels do make Rambo more of an action hero.
But to purely understand the mind of such a character is to always remember
    where it all started.
Both endings, original and alternate are incomparable.

In 1980a US Census survey revealed a third of the homeless population were veterans. That survey created a lot of outrage, and while the outrage faded quickly this film got greenlit first. Rambo was a slight counterweight against the overwhelmingly negative depiction of the military as bad guys at the time. Over the next twenty years attitudes would shift until the first Gulf War when the balance would shift decisively in favor of positive depictions of the military. Today veteran representation among the homeless population remains distressingly high although the Census Bureau has stopped tracking that information.

Re: confusion over the town signs. The name of the town is Hope, and when Rambo first arrives the sign at that town limit reads "WELCOME TO HOPE". There is also a second sign reading "GATEWAY TO HOLIDAYLAND", presumably a local tourist slogan with Hope being the first town in a larger geographical area locally called Holidayland. It isn't a continuity gaffe so much as it is that two ends of town---the one Rambo arrives in and the one you commented on---simply don't have identical signage.

"He's not a very good aimer" This came up in The Thing as well, Shooting a rifle from a moving helicopter is not even remotely easy, and using a scope only makes it worse, because your sight picture is now smaller. While this guy probably isnt the greatest shot, the shot he was taking would have been miraculous for a Marine Sniper. This an issue with people who have never been shooting, and assume that action movies give a realistic depiction of firearm combat. That is why even with cops, you are trained to shoot for center mass (the chest) the biggest part of the target, and you keep firing until the target goes down. Even a skilled shooter doesn't hit 100% of the time, even in the most favorable conditions. Too many people think that movies and playing Call of Duty actually give you real world experience.

The Vietnam War was a hellish war! And many of the people in the states were against it, and so by association were against the soldiers who fought in it. So when the soldiers came home, they weren't treated like heros, but like trash by many people. And to top it all off, the Veterans hospitals are notoriously terrible at taking care of the country's vets. Many who (being "shell shocked") suffered from PTSD never received the mental health help they needed. That coupled with not being able to find steady work (if work at all) led many into bad drug addictions and crime, or worse. 😢
Movies like First Blood help shed some light on this issue with gripping scenes and dialog like at the end of the movie.

    Great Reaction.....
The movie is set in the Pacific Northwest.... So State of Oregon or Washington (Rambo also mentioned heading to Portland, OR).....
This was one of the First Post-Vietnam movies that addressed PTSD....
This is from a Novel/Book, They Changed the ending for the movie....
Will Teasale, the Sheriff, is a Decorated Korea Conflict Veteran, which is considered America's forgotten war, So there is some animosity between Veterans of different wars.
Art (Deputy who fell out of Helicopter) also served in Korea with Teasle.....
Rambo didn't kill till he had no choice....
Experts have been surveyed and verified that all the things in this movie is possible and realistic.
The "Weekend Warriors" (National Guard) have access to all the Weapons, depending on purpose of your unit.....
In the mine, Rambo knew that the first thing that would be done was an airshaft, and escape exit in case of cave-in......
Reason he blew up the Gas Station and the Gun Store was to draw the police away from the station, where Rambo knew the Sheriff would stay......
Rambo's Speech at the end is so elequently worded and performed.....
In my Opinion, Parts 2 & 3 have some unbelievable parts, Rambo (4) and Last Blood (5) are back the believable action......

A couple great movies for you (if you haven't already seen them: The Sting (just fyi, there is a word used twice in this movie, I guess to make a point or for realism, it missed the mark and you may choose to edit it out or not) the movie with the exception of those 2 lapses in judgement is remarkably good. I'll give the late Brian Denehey credit as an actor. In Will Teasle, he created one of the most evil characters in motion picture history.

John Rambo was a danger to whatever community he was in. Good thing his true nature was revealed and he was stopped. Too many innocent lives were impacted by that drifter who was obviously unfit to live among the civilized population. Sheriff Teasle is the hero of this movie. The town he dedicated himself to serve was lucky to have him. After watching this movie, I'm not surprised Rambo couldn't hold a job parking cars.

uh, last thing i thought i'd see is the Jerry Stackhouse teal era Pistons jersey pop up at the end. i was a Pistons fan playing HS bball back then. Bought an Allan Houston jersey the day the news said it was guaranteed he'd resign, then saw on the news days later he signed with the Knicks. So I'm one of the few who owned the teal Pistons jersey he never wore. ha

It's not that in that town they don't like soldiers. It's that in the U.S. there was a great mobilization against the Vietnam War, and there were many deserters, so the veterans of that war were considered unworthy.

Those hiking boots you say weren't comfortable are deceiving. If Sly were wearing OD (olive drab) green jungle boots... after its break in most likely were most likely very comfortable. During the late 1980's thru late 1990's I wore them while in the Army. THE best pair of canvas and leather personnel carrier's I've ever owned.

My brother went to Viet Nam . Although he didn't go into battle, being an Army Medic, he saw the result. Unfortunately, he was afflicted by Agent Orange in his late 60s. He received treatment for cancer, but ended up with congestive heart failure and cirrhosis of the liver. He died a little over 7 years ago.

There's more to it than just bad treatment of Rambo...it's actually (in my humble opinion) a pretty nuanced story. The cop is trying to keep a precious status quo in his town, he's not a barbarian or a thug, just determined and loyal. He's also tough as hell, which works against him as the plot unfolds. Rambo, for all his PTSD, is a true blue maniac and whilst I don't for one second condone the harsh treatment he received, I wouldn't want a John Rambo in my town.

Maniac? Dude wanted pancakes. This move could've been 20 min of him visiting his friend, finding out he's dead, getting pancakes and leaving if the cops weren't dicks and escalated it at every turn.

    • @NeverGiddy
      @NeverGiddy Місяць тому

@HaveMonkeyWillDance - Great comment. You do understand. It is a nuanced story. The Sheriff immediately identifies Rambo as a potential threat to this peaceful community and Rambo spends the rest of the movie proving the Sheriff was right. Though certainly not perfect, the Sheriff is the hero of the movie and Rambo is the villain. A true blue maniac . . . well said. Nearly all of the comments on this sight express sympathy for Rambo for what he went through. None of it, none of it justifies his actions, all of which he set in motion himself through his decision not to cooperate with the police. Not only wouldn't you want a John Rambo in your town you can tolerate him being there once he has exposed his true nature. Rambo should had died at the end of the movie, by his own hand, by his boss, or by the mob of police outside the station. He needed to die. I'll start feeling sorry for John Rambo right after I start feeling sorry for Charles Whitman. This was a good movie with a bad ending.

In the mid to late 1970s and early 80s Vietnam Vets weren't regarded well, nor treated well. The war was very unpopular and the perception was we lost. So the Vets got labeled as losers and malcontents. A lot of them, like Rambo came home with severe PTSD, and it usually was not well treated. America's never really been kind to the homeless, so an indigent drifter Vietnam Vet of this era wouldn't have been well regarded by the Police, or society. The popularity of this film actually opened a lot of people's eyes to what was going on with our Vets, and changed a lot of minds. I always say First Blood did more for Vietnam Vets in 2 hours than the VA did in 20 years.

Actually in the book, that this movie is based upon, the Sheriff is a Korean vet, with a grudge against the Vietnam vets for multiple reasons really. It creates a completely different dynamic than in the movie. It's a good read - if you have a chance, you should totally read it.

GREAT reaction, but a lot to digest 1st time. "First Blood" a hard movie cuz content more than "shoot 'em up." It's my fav Rambo movie as it showed what it was like for many Vietnam vets after the war. The 60s were tough time for USA (Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam war, Cold War). Yes, Apollo prgm was positive. "Big divide" (US still has stronger than ever - stoked by ExtremeS) started then I think. In many ways, our nation nvr really recovered frm Vietnam. Another "rough" Vietnam movie (not so much "action" rough) is "Born on the 4th of July" w/Tom Cruise. Personally tough for Me cuz I think even Gen X vets (dealt w/Iraq & Afghan) can relate in some way (raised to love our country as kids of the 80s, believe in strong America), then dealt w/a protracted & costly war w/mixed results (putting it mildly). After, (even tho USA learned a lot frm how terribly Vietnam Vets were treated) many vets & families still deal w/dif types of trauma yrs later. "Born of the 4th of July" shows innocence & All-American upbringing shattered. Isn't easy & dives into the uncomfortable. Sometimes, the uncomfortable needs to be confronted.

Per what you said around the 6:44 minute nark, that was incorrect. Although the Vietnam War (and this movie) was before my time, I can tell you that the US soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War were DRAFTED...they were not given the choice. There was no 'not making the cut'. That was the era in which the draft was still in effect. Also, in this movie, the cop wasn't necessarily against soldiers...he was against 'vagrants' and the outside homeless coming into his quiet town. However, yes, in the novel, the Sherrif fought in the Korean War (about 15-20 years prior to the Vietnam War...but the Korean War was a forgotten one that never resonated with the US public, while the Vietnam War was ingrained in the American consciousness due to strong opinion for and against the war shared by the American people. So, in the novel, the Sherrif (Korean War veteran) was jealous a bit of Vietnam War vets, since the sentiments towards Vietnam War vets were so strong out there.
