Maverick, trick to super cooling with ice, rock salt, crushed ice, and layering, like you do with an ice cream maker. When you get halfway up, start using the cubed ice, with the rock salt. Leave 4 to 6 inches from the top for air flow. Also, start saving money by freezing tap water in gallon zip lock bags, not only good for cold storage, but drinking water. Rob
Sorry but this isn't correct Think about it...rock salt melts ice in the winter and doesn't effect how cold the ice is. Also not all ice is the same temperature. You can get ice at 32 degrees F but most home freezers will go as low as -15 below 0F. The colder the ice and the less surface area, the longer it lasts. This is why you can't beat quality block ice with no salt. Also worth noting that on the icy breeze air cooler, it specifically says not to use rock salt and will void warranty. Cheers
Mav, I love that you drove 1900 miles to support Steve. I've loved your channel for a long time and Steve's even longer. Thank you for being such a caring man! Love from 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦
Mav, you're a sweet kid. I started watching your videos after Steve posted the update about his beautiful wife because it was too heartbreaking to watch any of his videos after that. You're both sweet and genuine people and I feel that you're kindred spirits. When I saw Steve post on Facebook that you had gone so far out of your way to visit him in his time of need, it affirmed to me that you are a kind, respectful and compassionate person. I love your content every bit as love his and as someone who has been following him and has a heart aching for him right now, I appreciate what you did in that trip that I'm sure so many fans wished they could do. Whether or not you see it this way, you personally represented an entire community of people who have nothing but love and compassion for a man who brings joy and has experienced the biggest sorrow. My hat is off to you. Keep being sweet, keep on trucking, and hunker down sir. Thank you
Really nice of you to take a break and make such a long trip to give some support for Steve. Massive Respect man. You absolutely did the right thing. I knew you would do. Keep up.
Friendly suggestion is getting blocks of ice (2) which will fit perfectly side by side lengthwise in the cooler. That and getting a wire rack to set the blocks on, this will allow the air to move around the ice creating a larger cooling effect. You can run some 4" bolts and secure with nuts say halfway up the cooler (2 on each side and on the ends) to set the rack on (cookie cooling racks would work perfect). I think you would see a lot more colder air and the blocks will definitely last 10x's longer than cubed ice. Another suggestion would be putting the fan on one end of the cooler opposite of the exit port instead of the lid, this will push more air for you. And hanging some heavy fabric (like canvas material) on the camper side to block the air from going into the front cab of the car would help keep the cool air in and the warm air out (having a reflective windshield sunscreen also might help). Would love to see redo!
Also helps to have a stronger fan. I threw one together with fan/styrofoam cooler/frozen plastic containers of ice and it worked pretty well. also, suspend a silvery tarp over your vehicle to reflect sun away. I insulated my truck topper with reflectix and wood paneling and it even stays cool in the sun.
To make the swamp cooler work better you need to keep the RV from competing by reducing the heat production. An insulated windshield sunshade makes a huge difference as would insulated curtains in all the windows. Also crack the roof vent to allow the hot air to rise and escape as the cooler wait fills the lower areas. You were trying to cool contained hot air that as increasing in temp from the sun coming in your windows.
Tbf, if you crack the roof vent and some hot air escapes, other hot air from the outside will have to come in to take the place of those air. The cooler doesn't magically add cool air into the RV anyway, it just cools the already existing air inside. Pretty much works the same as AC units in homes, it blows the warm air in the room onto something to cool the air down, which for AC units it's the evaporator coil and for the swamp cooler, some ice, and that cooled air is redirected back into the room.
Mav stopping by to see Steve and cook him dinner during his hard time is a very compassionate and thoughtful thing for you to do, you are a good person.
Hey Mav, I've used those swamp coolers for camping/boondocking quite a bit. If you get some of those freezer ice packs and line them up with the cracks between them facing long end to long end, it'll work 10x better than ice ever will. There is no air flow between the ice (once it melts in 20 mins) but those freezer packs let the air flow between them, they won't last as long but if you get enough of the big ones (10"x10") to fill the bottom of the cooler, it'll last all night long for sure. The air temp I recorded coming out of the cooler was 65 degrees, also don't run the fan on high if it has multiple settings, medium to low so the air has time to absorb some of the "coolness". Lol
Just a heads up: evaporative (swamp) coolers don't work as well in higher humidity. And you usually need airflow (aka an open window). Keep that in mind.
Chris is right, in the high deserts of New Mexico everyone uses swamp coolers. In a very humid place like Hawaii, no one has ever heard of a swamp cooler lol
I'm high desert of Northern NV (it's not just Vegas) and everybody uses swamp coolers. Low humidity. And we keep a couple windows cracked and the air flows Great!
My sentiments exactly. My swamp cooler here in the high desert of NM works like a beast cooling by around 20 degrees Fahrenheit on a avg summer day. Without a window open, it gets so humid tho so make sure you have airflow from outside!
@@0777sadie from Phoenix myself. Use evap for spring, early summer and part of fall. Only time I switch to HVAC is the hottest part of summer (when it starts getting up around 110 or more) and monsoon. Significant difference in cost to run and maintenance.
Love when you break the bug back out! One of the weirdest campers ever but so neat. I’ve been living out of my trailer for the summer in Montana and have loved it. I did have to get one of the portable ACs for my pup to stay cool but love the innovation you’ve got going on. Exploring and filming the journey along the way is where it’s at! We’ve been documenting ourselves along the way and having a blast.
A personal thanks Mav for taking time for Steve. It was a big boost in healing.= Jess was his life. Very few of the million mourning her passing even saw her picture=. Again Mav, 1,900 miles to cook a meal!!!== Steve was over the moon!!!
Thanks to you I officially started camping in my truck almost a week ago now. Definitely figuring things out as I go. Been a learning experience. Plus Minnesota lately has been hot days and cold mornings. But such a cool experience so far
Northeastern Ontario Canada has almost the same humid weather as Minnesota. It rained a lot here this summer. A lot of heavy rain too. The swamp cooler wouldn't be good here.
For the swamp cooler, use a combination of block and cubed ice along with some rock salt. Next would be to put reflectix on all your windows would help immensely. Love all your videos and keep on truckin!
It would be cheaper just to run the car with A/C on than buying bags of ice, and it would actually work (somewhat) if you ran a vent to the camper. This reminds me of the phony "air conditioners" you can buy on Amazon which are nothing more than a fan with a sponge you can get wet. A tiny bag of ice cannot cool a camper.
You should have had the roof vent open! Heat rises and cooling stays to floor. Also, it will never cool sitting in direct sun. Thermal impact is too intense.
Also with evaporative cooling you do need to vent the air out some to keep a good flow going. He should've went to home depot instead, the Burning Man classic bucket swamp cooler works great if you're in a dry area. 95 degrees at night and the inside of the tent was freezing.
I actually don't respect the fact that he chose to stay. The cop explained why he needed to go and was pretty cool about it by allowing him time to leave, but he didn't which is not cool and why car living and van lifers get treated so poorly and have a bad rap. If you're told to leave, leave.
Hey man you have lots of excellent suggestions from your viewers on swamp coolers. I have a different suggestion back in the 90s I used to install HVAC equipment. You can get 110 volt through the wall AC unit or a heat pump unit, I would go with the heat pump unit that way you can heat and cool your space. What I would do is find the unit that fits the window next to the inside shelf where you put your power unit and the swamp cooler. Then I would take your bug to a steel fabrication shop and tell them what you want to do and let them build you a support frame on the outside of your bug it would not take much stick out with a gusset to support the unit they know how to do it it's not a big deal. The idea is to remove the window and in its place have your heating cooling unit. Buy two of the heavy duty sliding ball bearing units like you have at the back of your truck for your boxes that slide out the back. Take everything to the fabricator just tell him what you want you want the AC unit to slide into the vehicle during travel and you want it to slide outside the vehicle once you find a place to park so you can plug it in and have air conditioning they can easily design something and fabricate it in one day and you're done. The bad things about swamp coolers is they add moisture to the air so if you have a well running swamp cooler inside your vehicle the walls the wood everything you have is going to become saturated with moisture swamp coolers only work in low humidity environments like the desert cuz there's no moisture out there it doesn't matter if you get moisture in there in fact it's better for your breathing but any place where it's humid anything like that you want an AC unit that removes moisture from the air. Give me a comment back if you have any more questions I'll do my best to help you out peace
Times have changed since the 90s. They have all new types and styles with inverting the electrical. They make a 12volt ac now. For this style in the roof. Would look into that
Mav, there's no place like home! Everyone needs a vaca! That sunset is beautiful! Nice to see you! As always stay safe out there! Until next time.... Keep on truckin'!
It started to cool because the sun was setting. I'm a hotshot freight runner. 3/4 ton Ram with a gooseneck trailer. I go everywhere and have a 6,000 btu portable room a/c. I do not idle my diesel truck. But anyway when the sun is up its hard for me to stay cool even with 6,000 btu's and power it with my generator. Vehicles are metal boxes with little to no insulation. But once the sun sets it cools off quickly. Love your content bro. Be safe out there.
Love your videos and adventures Mav. I remember some people making swamp (evaporative) coolers like you did, but using orange Home Depot buckets. And I know several people have pointed it out already, but... you need a window open a few inches or your camper vent open. I live right next to Joshua Tree. Up here in the hi-desert, it's a dry heat. So swamp coolers work great. Until... any kind of change in humidity (aka monsoons) . Then it's AC or suffer through it. I have an '88 Lazy Daze motorhome. Along with everything else it has to offer, it has a roof-mount/factory Swamp Cooler! I won't use it unless I'm in a campground with full hookups. It really goes through the water. Be safe! Uncle Rick
Swamp coolers(aka evaporative coolers) draw air through pads that have water flowing through them creating a cooling effect. They are mainly used in drier climates since they are ineffective in humid climates.
Hi, Mav. I use a swamp cooler in my house. It works great. It uses water straight out of the tap. No ice is needed. It works by blowing air through water-soaked pads that evaporate the water. It is the evaporation that cools the air down. Just blowing air over ice won't work well. It also depends on your humidity level. Swamp coolers don't work over 30% humidity. *TYU*
Yup Dude. Happy you're back and as always great content. What a beautiful spot to camp. Buggless, Bugsy. that vehicle is a kneck breaker, eye catcher and a conversation piece for sure. I love all the different vehicle personalities you have acquired. Fun and function! Keep on trucking Mav!😃
Being from North Carolina I have found that the Icybreeze cooler works the best in hot humid climates. It blows cold dry air and is has 3 different power options. It is a bit pricey but it's well worth it. Love the channel!
Swamp coolers can work well, but because of the ambient heat in locked air space and the camper materials it all holds great amounts of heat residual heat. Cool vid Mav!
Dry ice works wonders in swamp coolers like that. Also you need to have a window cracked, because that’s essentially a big humidifier as well as a swamp cooler. That’s why it felt damp.
You've got to find a way to get the air to blow through the ice not just over it. Try a partition between the fan and exiting duct sealing the lid and sides so the air must blow through the ice to get to the exit. The best dyi swamp cooler I have seen uses a pump to circulate ice water through copper tubing that runs in a tight coil behind a box fan secure the tubing to the fan with zip ties..
Mav, we really enjoy following you. It just touched us so much that you came here to see Steve (we live fairly close to him). Somehow I had a feeling you were going to do this and told my husband last week I thought you would come here. That is just the warm, caring, thoughtful person we see in your videos. ❤
Swamp coolers only work well if the relative humidity is low. In Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and other fairly dry parts of the United States, swamp coolers are used instead of the more traditional a/c, because the interior of your house won't become a swamp itself. Areas where the humidity level is higher, your house, the walls with be covered with condensation from a swamp cooler. Outside, they may be okay to sit in front of while the ice melts, but you will still be covered with moisture!
Glad to see ya back especially getting the "bug out camper" back out. Lol I couldn't help it I found it punny. You always make us feel right at home with you and always chill us all out no matter what kind of day we are having. Thank you Mav!
A swamp cooler works by exchanging the heat in your room air with the water vapor it adds to the room (which then leaves by an open window or exhaust fan.) Using colder water will give more capacity for holding heat, but if the air is already full of energy-laden water vapor it's a losing battle.
We have a farm and the country of Belize. We have no air condition and most of the year we do not need one. About two weeks out of the year you would welcome an air condition. For those nights when it gets warmer than normal, we take a water bottle that has been frozen and put it behind her neck. It not only works as a neck pillow but it cools you down all night. I learned that from one of the locals and it does work extremely well. A fan would probably work well too but I am too cheap to run the huge generator all night long. Lol
No way was this experiment a failure, it was a clear example of how you succeed in life. You must take chances and not let fear run you. Worst case scenario he said "I will just pack up and leave" Don't be afraid, go, be you! Great message in today's video.
Seems like ice in a bag only has a limited surface area to cool the volume of air you need for the camper. Ice out side the bag has significantly more surface area to cool. In humid climates swamp coolers have a significantly reduced effect because of the lack of evaporation. You get a wet blanket feel. That’s why 80 degrees with 80% humidity sucks way more than 80 degrees in 15%.
If you plan to fix up the little beetles suspension, definitely get heavier springs to lift it up with the weight of the camper it would help out a lot with ride quality
Would love to see a collab with you and Outdoor Chef Life! Feel like you and Taku would have an amazing time fishing and cooking together. Enjoy your well deserved rest!
A swamp cooler is an evaporative cooler. The water can’t evaporate if it’s covered in plastic. If you put 3 bags of ice in there you would probably get a better result as the air would be forced through the ice rather than just over the top of it.
Ive worked in a non climate control metal building in Oklahoma for years where it gets real humid. The best thing I've found that works even with camping down here is just keeping the air moving. Don't be cheap with fans and displace alot of air and maximize ventilation. My company has spent thousands on big Porta cool systems that just get dusty in a corner because they are more hassle than there worth.
One's character defines who they truly are, and that's why I always enjoy when Mav post a video, Keep on Trucking Mav, Yes breaks are needed and we all love Mav !
Need slower fan speed and more ice surface area to even have a chance at cooling. Air is a horrible heat conductor that’s why those silly cryo-chambers don’t freeze you. If you submerged a metal pipe with a fan at one end into ice water that may work better.
I would try using copper piping that is submerged under the ice. Three 3 inch pipes that lay on the bottom and then 90 up and come through the lid. Use small low speed computer fans on the intake side of each pipe. Then on the exhaust side couple the 3 into one using vaccum cleaner attachments. The lower speed is going to let the air spend more time in the pipe to cool. Then the 3 to 1 will increase the pressure back up!! If you did this you could use dry ice too as it will work more efficiently. Just an ide
Mav, love your content and how you are always trying new things. Gotta say though, if the man says you gotta leave then you gotta leave, it's not cool to be a burden on LEO'S. Keep on truckin and let the good vibes flow!
Totally agree. My wife and I absolutely love Mav’s videos, but Mav should’ve left before 10 PM like the officer said. Officer was just doing his job and was being nice and respectful to Mav.
It's difficult to find block ice, so I learned to make my own by freezing water in a juice or gallon water jug. It takes much longer for a block to melt. Not only did/do live in a hurricane zone and want to keep my freezer cold as long as possible during a power outage. I also found myself without A/C in my vehicle for a couple of summers, charging didn't fix it and more money into it wasn't an option. So I kinda did what you did here to survive a drive.
I really think the swamp cooler just needed more ice, maybe even some dry ice chunks, but it might get a little expensive after my suggestion,s. I’m glad the mountie didn’t ruin your rest! Stay safe Mav!!! And always stay awesome!!!!! ❤
the cooling effect in a swamp cooler comes from the fan pulling air though an element that's evaporating the water. If you just put ice in a cooler with a fan blowing over it, its not going to cool very well. if you were to somehow put a constantly wet paper towel or something close to that on the back of the fan, then it would cool much better, you just need to find a way to recycle that water back to the towel so that it keeps cooling it.
A fish tank aerator with a coiled hose running through the ice allows for better placement for the needed area. A short section of hose insulation for the hose outside the cooler and a place to clip the the end of the hose makes a difference. Always place source of cold above since it will cool you as it passes to the lower areas.
First you have to get all the hot air out of the cabin then the swamp cooler will work better. Swamp coolers don't work well in humid conditions . They work better in hot dry areas Arizona is ideal. Try a layer of Reflectix on the outside roof it doesn't have to be permanent you could attach it with clamps or velcro. There are different size rolls not terribly expensive say 40.00 US. Can buy by the roll at Home Depot or Lowes. Will significantly cut down the heat. In summer it protects from sun heat and in winter it protects from cold. The way it's made it is super shiny on both sides and there are little pillows in a honeycomb design and in the pillows are pockets of carbon. This stuff is super light weight developed for the space program. Also very tough and durable. It's the best bang for the buck improvement for fighting the elements.
Mav, the grind in my life is so tiring. Whenever I watch your videos, it feels like I'm travelling with you and it's a nice break from reality. Keep it up my man
It may have been mentioned already, but if you did more ice, uncovered but like you could double it at least or more, and maybe even get a good bit of salt over the whole thing, that cooler would get much colder and would push out much colder air. Also airflow! The hot airs gotta go somewhere so it’s more efficient to have some good airflow to push the hot air out and give space for the cool air to take place! It’s harder to cool it off if everything’s closed
In July, in Florida, I camped in a small tent and I brought a Windmachine Fan, $49 Walmart and It has 3 speeds. It was a Godsend. By the time I woke up, I had covered up with a sheet. It worked that good. We had electricity hook ups so that helped.
I would say if you do decide to try making a swamp cooler again maybe try filling the whole ice chest up with ice instead of just one bag. But other than that you may need to actually buy a swamp cooler to get decent effects.
Next time try evaporative cooling. Hang a sheet of burlap or (other loosely weaved material that can absorb/wix water) vertically between the fan and the vent opening. Maybe add a small fish tank water pump to the mix to pump cold water from the bottom of the cooler to the top of the burlap so it uses gravity to absorb into the fabric. As the air passes through the wet fabric, it evaporates the water and naturally cools the air doing so.
This is so great! Took a break from the Tube and finally getting back and so glad to watch. As someone who has taken many a nap inside a car, I can say that Windshields let in a lot of heat, as do all windows. I had to invest in reflective sunshades and it might be a good idea for all your travel vehicles to keep the heat in or out depending on when you're camping out. Love the content and following your journey. Feels weird as a city girl living in the heart of Detroit to tell people to "Keep on truckin'", but I do it anyway. Stay golden.
Hot air always go up! So open up the roof vent!!! Your cooled air has to build up first! That means, that it cools the VW down stairs first! The most effective it would be, if you lengthen the tube, and let it blow out cool air against the roof (let that pipe just be three inches shorter). The cooler air will spread! But always keep the roof vent open! Maybe you should invest in a ventilator that fixes in that roof vent! These are for sale, but it has to be 'snugfit'! Go to a shop for camping equipment 😊
I like how the cop deflected by saying he would be getting calls ALL NIGHT. No one else in sight, Like calls from who ? That was a beautiful spot Mav, and I like how you always cook something that is not traditional lazy camp food.
@@rtyria Yup exactly, and probably just has to give the same speech to everyone as per routine bylaws. Overall lesson is, if you have something cool you can win over law enforcement lol
Mav, you need to fill the ice chest to the brim with ice. It will only work effectively if you force the air to go through the ice, not just over top of it. You’ll thank me later!
Hey mav, random question for you.. Do you see a lot of waterfowl at these lakes and river grounds you camp at? I am a big waterfowler and I always wonder in your videos if you see a lot or not. Love the videos man! keep up the hard work, it does not go unnoticed!
I used to have an old souped-up racing VW bug (60s era) without AC in hot, humid Dallas, Tx, back in the 80s, & I drove just like you to get done what I had to get done ASAP in the heat. I loaded up a ice chest FILLED with loose ice onto the back seat, opened the top of the ice chest completely with a 12 volt fan blowing over the top of the ice RIGHT ON ME (about 8-12 inches away from my neck/upper back) I don't remember exactly how I secured the fan...maybe clipped to the lid (?). It did help ALOT, even tho it was humid. Hair style & makeup dissolved, but it kept me from having a heat stroke. (Just opening the top of the filled ice chest itself really cooled the interior down even without the fan blowing & the windows up.) Swamp coolers don't really cool well in 50% & higher humidity unless it's blowing directly on you. They do much better in less that 50% humidity, & you really are supposed to have outside air being drawn over the ice, with another window open to allow the cooled moist air to exit to prevent moisture buildup & to save purddy hairdos & makeup in drier climates...but when you're HOT or on 🔥, who CARES?
get you a little windows ac unit and run it off the jackery for a couple hours, you even got the window and space for it, it would take up the same amount of space as that big cooler
I know I sent too much again but I can't help it I just love watching your simple shows they're great this second time I was watching of course I finally ate lunch I'm just glad to see you kind of take life as it goes and don't get in a hurry about anything sometimes it's the best part of life eat when you're hungry drink when you're thirsty and sleep when you want to sleep a stress-free life is better than a rat race and rushing all over..... It's fun to rush sometimes but it's great to take your time.... I've got to watch you progress in your shows over these years and I'm just grateful to still be watching and I'm very grateful to be coming into Southern Minnesota
Warm air rises and cool air falls so the swamp cooler vent needs to be at the highest position in the camper. The best diy swamp cooler I've seen is the wet towel draped over the box fan but it's loud and windy.
I grew up with a swamp cooler. Swamp coolers do not do well in humid climates. You do need to keep one vent slitly open to draw the air thre the camper if you use it. You would do much better with a small refrigerated air conditioner. Cheryl from Colorado!
Just saw a picture of where you are, and wanted to say you're a stand up guy. Welcome to the area, and a big thank you for supporting our hometown guy. I've watched a few of your videos, now I'm a subscriber... hunker down and much love
I'm glad you do your shows it helps us too to realize we're not alone that we kind of live alone a lot of times camping alone and I'm grateful I made it to Minnesota in this old bus and yeah I got my injuries and sometimes I'm in a lot of pain but other times I feel okay..... The hard part is being Elvis Presley's son you know I was born in 1972 and I have a twin brother and Elvis was getting a DIVORCE BECAUSE of us being born I would sure love to share the picture of my mother and Elvis Presley when they were young...... But it's okay I'll be camping and parking lots and everything else this month and due to financial disability effects.... I'm just happy to watch your shows and leave a big long message because I'm entering Minnesota again..
I just think that Volkswagen campus is special... You know I love camping so much that's why I watch your shows I don't know if I could ever live in a house but I might try it I have not lived in a home since I got on disability age 23 so I got a lot of experience... And I'm proud of you camping like you do there's nothing like being a real nomad
Whenever I'm struggling i come watch mav. He helps me take my mind off of things. Right now my hands are shaking so bad and my mind and heart is racing but this helps
I have watched enough videos now to understand the routine but I got a kick out you saying you needed ice, a cooler and a fan. Next scene you picking out garlic....made my day for sure! Clearly that public official never came back around. Why were you so confident that he would double at night? Great video!
It's more that the sun wasn't beating down outside as it got darker. Also, you could save on gas and cook your dinners quicker if you put the lid on your pot and stopped the heat escaping. Love your videos. Hi From Australia 👋🏼
For an excellent tomato sauce take a can of San Marzano whole tomatoes into a flask or mason jar. Add 1 teaspoon of salt and a generous swig of olive oil. Use a large kitchen knife to cut crush the whole tomatoes. Now the Italian secret. Leave in the fridge overnight! :) The best cold or hot tomato sauce or clamato ever! :) Boom. :) Take care all the best. :)
Started watching your videos a few weeks back and man, i gotta say you really are living the best possible life. Much love from Norway, wish i had the chance to live like you
I love watching your vids. When I was younger I took fantastic road trips. Organ Pipe Cactus at the Arizona / Mexico border was my most fav. The drive South on HWY1 from Oregon to San Francisco is another. And I'll never forget my Bryce Canyon visit in Utah. Thanks for all you do 'n keepin it real !
The air has to move through that ice. Put a wire grill a few inches from the bottom and attach another piece of pvc through that wire grill so all the air has to go through the ice and grill. Aluminum elbow and straight piece would also stay cooler
The method you're looking to use is called evaporative cooling and it only works in dry environment if there's any humidity in the air "swamp coolers" are pretty much useless, you're relying on a lower dew point to have the cooling process feel more comfortable. (This is coming from veteran HVAC technician of 30 years)
love u guys. needed a break for a week but we back 😎
Great content man 💯🔥
Hey brother you gotta take care of yourself.
You're doing great stuff, thanks for all of your hard work
Yes breaks are MUCH NEEDED!
Yay :D
Nice to have you back
Maverick, trick to super cooling with ice, rock salt, crushed ice, and layering, like you do with an ice cream maker. When you get halfway up, start using the cubed ice, with the rock salt. Leave 4 to 6 inches from the top for air flow. Also, start saving money by freezing tap water in gallon zip lock bags, not only good for cold storage, but drinking water. Rob
was gonna comment this exactly
I would also maybe add a stronger fan that little desk fan probably doesn't put out that much air
@Follower lmao Fr bro lyin for what 🤣
Rock salt wouldn't that melt all the ice?
Love from 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦
Yes. Please to visit him again.
Would love to see redo!
great advice!!!
Whoever you are, thank you! Will give this a go👍
Also helps to have a stronger fan. I threw one together with fan/styrofoam cooler/frozen plastic containers of ice and it worked pretty well. also, suspend a silvery tarp over your vehicle to reflect sun away. I insulated my truck topper with reflectix and wood paneling and it even stays cool in the sun.
That’s what i was thinking
I ain’t reading allat
To make the swamp cooler work better you need to keep the RV from competing by reducing the heat production. An insulated windshield sunshade makes a huge difference as would insulated curtains in all the windows. Also crack the roof vent to allow the hot air to rise and escape as the cooler wait fills the lower areas. You were trying to cool contained hot air that as increasing in temp from the sun coming in your windows.
@Jackson Spence they’re automated bots most times
@Jackson Spence lol
Mav’s content is like comfort food, nice after a long day.
I totally agree

You nailed it! I see a new Mav vid and I’m like- oh yeah- the laundry can wait til I watch this. Thx Mav!
Exactly how it makes me feel

Mav stopping by to see Steve and cook him dinner during his hard time is a very compassionate and thoughtful thing for you to do, you are a good person.
I’m seriously doubting this actually happened.
Doubting what? That Mav can be compassionate? Or that Steve lost his wife and is going through a hard time?

Lol
So the air has more time to transfer thermal energy to the ice :)
I live up north too, it’s crazy how hot this summer has been for us
Just a heads up: evaporative (swamp) coolers don't work as well in higher humidity.
Exactly. Here in the high desert prairie of southern Colorado, a swamp cooler is perfection. 😀

Thanks to you I officially started camping in my truck almost a week ago now. Definitely figuring things out as I go. Been a learning experience. Plus Minnesota lately has been hot days and cold mornings. But such a cool experience so far
Now it's time to start posting some content. Stay safe out there!
Congrats on getting out there!👍
Northeastern Ontario Canada has almost the same humid weather as Minnesota. It rained a lot here this summer. A lot of heavy rain too. The swamp cooler wouldn't be good here.
Small 110 ac and a small gas generator.
I love this little camper. Aside from the heat, it looks like a comfy bed. I’m glad you brought it out!
For the swamp cooler, use a combination of block and cubed ice along with some rock salt. Next would be to put reflectix on all your windows would help immensely. Love all your videos and keep on truckin!
I agree, I was just gonna comment that too
It would be cheaper just to run the car with A/C on than buying bags of ice, and it would actually work (somewhat) if you ran a vent to the camper.
This reminds me of the phony "air conditioners" you can buy on Amazon which are nothing more than a fan with a sponge you can get wet. A tiny bag of ice cannot cool a camper.
very nicely put.
or just get an air conditioner
Use dry ice
Classy guy you are Mav, driving up to show support to Steve is a sign of a genuine and caring person. You’ve exceeded expectations. Welcome to Canada!
This is a real youtuber. Most would have it titled with some click bait, “cops try to arrest me for camping”. Good job brother. Keep it up.
Be safe!

Swamp coolers(aka evaporative coolers) draw air through pads that have water flowing through them creating a cooling effect. They are mainly used in drier climates since they are ineffective in humid climates.
Yes facts the southwest and parts of California is where these thrive grew up with a swamp cooler.

Swamp coolers only work in low humidity environments. Arizona, Nevada it would work well. Up here in the Midwest they don’t.
Dry ice is carbon dioxide. You wouldn't want to die of suffocation by CO² in the closed camper.
This guy is living the life I always dreamed of
A swamp cooler works by exchanging the heat in your room air with the water vapor it adds to the room (which then leaves by an open window or exhaust fan.) Using colder water will give more capacity for holding heat, but if the air is already full of energy-laden water vapor it's a losing battle.
Yeah. Disregard rules on public access and that results in more gates put up eventually
Just an ide

It's difficult to find block ice, so I learned to make my own by freezing water in a juice or gallon water jug. It takes much longer for a block to melt. Not only did/do live in a hurricane zone and want to keep my freezer cold as long as possible during a power outage. I also found myself without A/C in my vehicle for a couple of summers, charging didn't fix it and more money into it wasn't an option. So I kinda did what you did here to survive a drive.
Wow very resourceful for sure. When my ac went out in old car I would freeze a wet hand towel and ride with it on my neck for drives
might be a fuse, or something
I really think the swamp cooler just needed more ice, maybe even some dry ice chunks, but it might get a little expensive after my suggestion,s. I’m glad the mountie didn’t ruin your rest! Stay safe Mav!!! And always stay awesome!!!!! ❤
Dry ice might be dangerous, it could create a lot of CO2 in a small space, we don't want Mav to go to sleep and not wake up now do we lol
the cooling effect in a swamp cooler comes from the fan pulling air though an element that's evaporating the water. If you just put ice in a cooler with a fan blowing over it, its not going to cool very well. if you were to somehow put a constantly wet paper towel or something close to that on the back of the fan, then it would cool much better, you just need to find a way to recycle that water back to the towel so that it keeps cooling it.
He could use a fish tank pump to pump water to a bar with holes in it that trickles water on the paper towel maybe.
@@jdshanahan4215 ohhhhhh, that would be so simple!
Wouldn’t matter , that area is high humidity, swamp coolers don’t work in high humidity areas.
Keep it up my man
I love your content Mav, I’ve always wanted a vehicle like this!
Hey Mav you ever thought of putting some stronger shocks or springs on the back of that bug to raise it up a little bit so it doesn't sag as much
It may have been mentioned already, but if you did more ice, uncovered but like you could double it at least or more, and maybe even get a good bit of salt over the whole thing, that cooler would get much colder and would push out much colder air.

LOOOOL Mav put one lil small bag of ice in there and expected it to work 🤦🏾♂️
@@paulbarrycuda yeah that was kind of funny lol
Next time try evaporative cooling. Hang a sheet of burlap or (other loosely weaved material that can absorb/wix water) vertically between the fan and the vent opening. Maybe add a small fish tank water pump to the mix to pump cold water from the bottom of the cooler to the top of the burlap so it uses gravity to absorb into the fabric. As the air passes through the wet fabric, it evaporates the water and naturally cools the air doing so.

What if you tried using dry ice in your DIY swamp cooler?

Warm air rises and cool air falls so the swamp cooler vent needs to be at the highest position in the camper. The best diy swamp cooler I've seen is the wet towel draped over the box fan but it's loud and windy.
I've also hung a wet towel over a drying rack (or hang it in an open window) a few inches behind a fan.
I grew up with a swamp cooler. Swamp coolers do not do well in humid climates. You do need to keep one vent slitly open to draw the air thre the camper if you use it. You would do much better with a small refrigerated air conditioner. Cheryl from Colorado!

The method you're looking to use is called evaporative cooling and it only works in dry environment if there's any humidity in the air "swamp coolers" are pretty much useless, you're relying on a lower dew point to have the cooling process feel more comfortable.
