Growing up super poor, my parents never bought me toys, candy, VHS tapes or video games. Then my cousin bought me a N64 and DKR for Christmas 1997. Diddy Kong Racing was all I had. My only form of childhood entertainment. Every polygon was burned deep into my memory. Multiple completions in Adventure 1 & 2 for shits n giggles. Defeated TT on every track. It shaped the person I am today-a tenacious perfectionist and the *ultimate* fucking master of Diddy Kong Racing. No therapist can tell me otherwise.
EDIT: I just revisited DKR and beat everything (again) with Krunch in one sitting. Still got it baby.
Yo bro. This was the second game I ever bought myself when I was like 10-13 (can't recall the very year I was old) but I shoveled snow off driveways after school to be able to have games to play. Would legit go out with my friends and come home alone. But I made enough to buy my own controller and dkr. Totally worth it. Never came to the point where I ever seen this stuff in the game.

me and my brother beat that shit over and over, got all sorts of chaos, enjoyed the F out of the game, and unironically needed to play better and get faster so we could do more of the game before the parents turned off the game and reset us
I remember me and my brother learning the cool life hack, put the game case on top of hte gamecube to block the light so they wouldnt instantly notice and turn off the gamecube, switch the tv back off the input for gamecube so they dont notice once they turn on the tv.

facts, this game got me into racing games and forged me into a racing god.
I understood from a young age back in 1997 that you had to pick the turtle or the mouse to have precise turning. This game becomes 5 times easier with one of those selected.

The fact that he beat the game without tight turning is an astounding achievement itself, really.
The sheer fact that if you tap the shoulder button twice you do an even tighter turn and go further to the right and he never used it is astonishing
@@kibbleknight2156 So all the close to bullshit coin and boss challenges could have been a bit easier? Like it sometimes looked to me those coins and some courses were designed with an arcade style in mind and did not play well with the driving mechanics. As if the player does not really have the right tools to complete some of those challenges.
@@nocomment3294 Some of the Silver Coins races can be collected easily in one lap, but im pretty sure the Adventure 2 Silver Coins are harder.

When I was playing this a few years back, I actually didn't read the tip where it told you about the boost trick, so i always thought that you had to get wizpig to bump you forwards.
I tried at least 100 times to get wizpig to bump me while carefully eyeing the minimap and I nearly got it once. I got really good at the track too, someone told me afterwards about the trick and I managed to do it but fuck.
lol, trying to get goldeneye boosts w no health. I feel you tho, that is frustrating, I bet someone can beat it w.o the green zipper trick tho. I'll have to look into it.

I remember spending so much time unlocking that stupid clock. That game was probably the closest I've ever been to a speedrunner because the requirements for 100% completion were crazy.
This is such a great video, what I really love is the writing. All of the jokes and bits throughout the video are brought back one after the other at the very end right before the conclusion. Genius writing.
I don't know why randomly in my head 'Diddy Kong Racing' came, but I had to come and check the video as it been over 22 years since I've played it.

My brother and I mastered this game. We found all the keys, all coins, the green boost and beat the game simply by playing it. Back then, only the rich could afford a computer, and internet required the phone line, so it was not an option for us.

Here's a secret, release the acceleration before boosting either with zipper or balloon and you'll get the legendary green boost and it's 1.5 times faster

This game is AWESOME, will always be one of my faves, always have great fun when I play. Wizpig was torture and it felt SO good when I finally beat him. Plus Lol at this video looool. Also wtf at that shortcut NEVER knew that :o
Fun fact: The Genie tells you about the green boost mechanic after you beat one of the bosses for the first time (I forgot which one). You also only need to let go of A for the green boost to happen. The green boost trick also works for blue balloon boost, and it is more effective if you let go of accelerate until all of the boost is done. Do these, and you can go super fast by combining green boosts from zippers and blue balloons!

That game was one of the ones that I played the most in my childhood with my brothers, we turned it around, the best way to go faster is to skid with "R" all the time without exception, I learned that from my brother who took all The time records to get the character TT, the part of the coins was always the most difficult but you felt very good when you did it, you can also play two in a cooperative
And we always used, turn left + R + B
which allowed you to double fast, and I saw that you did not use it, so there are other tips for you to play
I remember watching this when it came out and now that I do it again , all I can say is that it's just as entertaining.

finished this game a couple years back and i vividly remember how grueling and difficult the wizpig race was. you literally can't miss a single boost pad or you wont beat him. Granted i wasn't aware of the strat where you Tap A repeatedly instead of holding A to accelerate (apparently you drive faster while tapping A). But i did know about the green boost tech and i still had a hard time. id like to go back and try it again while using the tapping method for regular driving and see if it makes a big difference
