That’s hilarious that he included the “add Reddit to the end of the search” trick, because that is LITERALLY how you get at least within scrolling reach of real and helpful results.
And then you have to audit the reddit poster to make sure it isn't a shill or a bot... But yeah, I too use reddit in my searches because that seems to be the only way to really find actual people that aren't an obvious advertorial.
@@Pihsrosnec 100% lol. It’s actually kind of crazy how ineffective it is compared to doing the Google Reddit trick. As others have said, this strategy’s days are likely numbered now that it’s so well known

I once had a friend in a different city that was trying to find a place to buy something specific but wasn't sure what stores sold it. I tried to search it in the shopping tab of google search but with changing my location to the location of my friend. Turns out you can't do that because no matter how much you try to change or mask your location Google still knows where you are and they just aren't convinced that you actually want search results from a different city

Yeah, the searches ignore punctuation so when searching for the documentation for the C++ standard library's "list" object, my search for std::list did _not_produce what I was looking for! Safe search on, people!
Well, that seems perfectly realistic to me. People always say stuff like "There's this weird noise" or "my computer/electric drill/dish washer is making funny noises". So, that monitor made a funny noise. Happens all the time.

@@wesleyoldham4222 Google's q&a section is often hilarious as well. Who's asking these questions? Well no one, but Google apparently thinks those are the questions that go with random unrelated answers on webpages.
Not totally true though :D on Reddit people don't always agree but people genuinely discuss why they do and don't like stuff like a particular monitor. It's the perfect balance so you can read through the threads and get a feel for the realistic pros and cons
Ah I see you've found the "reddit" search technique. I've been doing that a lot recently, works really well sometimes, other times it's just another meandering path that leads nowhere. :')
@@randompastahandle If I ran a company, I would have at least 1 full time employee who monitored reddit and Quora to give our products glowing reviews and head off any negative information. Nice touch with the "I did the search in less than 1 second" - had to check and after all those years they actually still give you the time it took right at the top, lol
The best part of all that is that it is fake. Google literally just spews out a number. Do yourself a favor and google ... let's say "potato chips".. It'll give you about 558.000.000 results in 0.60 seconds. Now if you scroll ALL the way down, and go to the very last page which should be page 25... It will show that it actually only found 249 results and that it took multiple seconds.
@@OphionTheTitan Yeah, that's interesting. Thing is, Google does index pretty much the entire internet, and half a billion results sounds reasonable. Here's my educated guess for roughly what Google does and where those numbers come from (based on one university course about search engines): - Google already has pre-made lists for pages that contain the words 'potato' and 'chips' or synonyms thereof (though in this case it might only be one list for 'potato chips') - The intersection of those lists (the amount of pages in both lists) is the half a billion number - Google then ranks every one of those pages based on the search query - While ranking, it only keeps track of the number of pages it needs (10 for the first results page, 20 for the second, etc.) - Afterwards it sorts the results and shows them to you This all only takes a little more than half a second on the first results page. You know this is true because, with good internet, Google doesn't take multiple seconds to load. On the 25th results page, however, it has to keep track of a lot more pages and sort a lot more, which is why it takes longer (it also just takes longer to load). Beyond that, Google just refuses. It takes them too long and you probably weren't actually interested in the results at that point anyway. So the numbers come from somewhere, and it's still impressive, but they indeed haven't assembled and ordered all half a billion results for you in less than half a second, because you don't actually need half a billion results.
@@OphionTheTitan It will also note that Google only shows the most relevant results and omitted entries very similar to the ones already displayed, with a link to repeat the search with the omitted results, which will actually be the half million results.
I am in content marketing as well, however, I always stand for providing real value for people in interest. You can call it bs, but I will never give up this attitude

The only good thing about SEO is the way Google has been changing their algorithm to penalize ad-riddled websites, keyword stuffing, and other grey hat tactics. At least, in theory. Realistically, they are just making it impossible for people to get revenue without selling their souls to Google.
This is EXACTLY how I feel when searching for a local restaurant's menu. It's usually line 6 or lower, below all of the UberEats/DoorDash/GitHub/Yelp ads that want to make you think they have a copy of the menu

I remember the early days of the internet when it was all pop-up ads everywhere such that it made it difficult to tell what was real content and what was just ad cancer. Then we got ad blockers, and the internet had a golden age from about 2005-2015ish when the ad cancer was in remission. And now we're back to ad cancer recurrence. And really the pop up cancer never went away; we just masked it with countermeasures. So maybe it's more like ad AIDS than ad cancer.
I am happy that everyone at google know that when someone is looking for decent answers and discussion they put the name of another website "reddit" in their search because of google's bad decisions
Which is funny because the only reason that joke works is that people who use reddit know how awful that search function is and that's why they need to turn to google in the first place.
I like how every major online brand has its own personality: UA-cam is insecure, Amazon is overtly positive, laid back and untrusworthy; Google is brutally honest and greedy
@@catbatrat1760 I like that you're at least asking the question. To me, the bots are brutally obvious and I find it weird that other people don't see them the same way.
If you think Google is brutally honest try searching for something like "pizzagate" and see how all the real results are buried under 2 billion pages of propaganda manipulation. Plus this video outlines in another way just how dishonest they are......honest really isn't the word I'd use.
Yeah, something I just noticed is that Google and Amazon talk kind of like characters from Catch-22 - especially Google. It bamboozles with honesty. Catch-22 characters tend to have an extreme case of saying the quiet part out loud. Colonel: "Well Poppinjay, as soon as his trial ends, your trial begins! Got that?" Poppinjay: "Yes sir. What will I be charged with?" Colonel: "What the hell difference does that make!?"

@@Dudemon-1 Well they took that down when the founders left. With any company when the original founders leave that usually means they are now public on the stock market and the share holders drive them.
Glad this is getting brought up more. Early 2000's google was smooth and efficient. It's not even the ads for me! Problem is even if you know exactly what you're looking for and use quotation marks to specify it- you rarely get what you want because of all the predictive algorithms trying to anticipate what you _REALLY_ mean.
A "fun" way to pass the time while dealing with insomnia circa 2004 was after everyone else fell asleep to go on Yahoo Answers and google the answers to people's questions and rack up internet points. Song lyrics were an especially easy to rack up points if people knew even one full line. Now whenever I have a song in my head but can't think of what it is, even using quotes the search results are just whatever song is the most popular/record company pays them the most that has lyrics sort of similar to what I'm searching for 100 times in a row. "Showing results instead for", no bitch algorithm, I used quotes for a reason.
Yeah this is a big pain for me too. I wish there was a "no really, I know what I'm looking for" checkbox but I guess irrelevant results are better for engagement than no results at all.
Wait ..you guys use quotes in your searches? Lmao....I've never in my life thought to do that, and I've never had any issues finding what I'm looking for lol..strange
@@ZacharyShade Exactly! Instead of finding those words, in that order, on a website, it keeps trying to decode the lyrics into something. I searched for song lyrics, put them in with perfect punctuation and never get results. Yet whenever I finally find the song and search its name: right there in the description will be the lyrics exactly as I typed them. Get your shit together Google, you were better than this.
You can still search this way, but they hid the option a bit. To do a search where "all the words in quotation marks MUST be in results" you do the search as normal, then when the results pop up click Tools on the far right and instead of All results select Verbatim.
I love how the deals monitor sale encourages you to buy “laptops and monitors that might not fall apart.” I recently discovered that Ryan modifies images and it makes things so much better.

A year ago, I purchased a manual coffee grinder that popped up on every "best coffee grinder" list I had read while researching. Turns out, that particular grinder is notoriously bad AND you can purchase identical grinders with different branding for cheaper.
It used to be you could leave a review saying how it's bad. You still can and they won't delete it, but nowadays there's 10k fake ones to drown you out.
I ignore top 10 lists now and go straight to Reddit for real, mostly uncensored opinions. Too many lists are paid to promote the items, and they get revenue from affiliate links. They’re motivated to lie to you about the quality, in other words
I have often put "Reddit" at the end of my Google search lately and that is helpful. I've also noticed Google is helpful for telling whether a place is closed, which I've had to search a lot for a database at my job.
The irony that ryan made this video directly after lastweektonight complained about google's search results xD ...and directly after I just fought with google/the internet to find out what product of a category is the best, despairing at how the internet still haven't solved forcing stores/manufacturers to write proper specs and be clear on included accessories (and extension products for the model).
NoMagic just did a great video about Google's attempt at shifting the Internet away from cookies and to a more "private" experience for users while still maximizing ad-ability.
Usually I just search on UA-cam for which are the best. Because a video takes much more effort than a simple web-page and it's usually easier to differentiate between videos that wants to sell you stuff and videos that actually want to help you.
That's not irony. The irony is that some show as politically biased as lastweektonight and sponsored by a tech giant like AT&T is talking about bias in google search results. The hypocrisy is real. I'll take Ryan George over shills anyday.
This is hilarious considering I just went through a painstaking search to find the best portable computer monitor. You really have to do your research, and funnily enough youtube is actually a good place to find people who have researched this stuff and give a less biased answer.
Was recently looking for reviews on a GPU, found 3 vids using Google, 2 of them said "good GPU, you can use it, definitely good bang for your buck" and the last said "this specific GPU is shit, here are some benchmarks to prove it" and lo and behold it was a previous revision of the exact GPU I wanted. Good thing that UA-cam removed likes and dislikes so that I couldn't see that that third video had 400 likes to 1500 dislikes and the comments on it brought up some good points about how the benchmarks were not done properly otherwise I'd have bought that GPU... On an unrelated note, I recommend the "Return UA-cam dislikes" extension to fix greedy and dumb corporate decisions made by out of touch executives.
This is even funnier to watch because my wife used to work as an editor for a company that specializes in search-engine optimization. The entire company revolved around helping small business write their articles and advertisements in a way to appear higher on google's search results. It is a very profitable enterprise. She learned a lot of interesting miscellaneous stuff while editing said articles. It has kind of reached a point where a lot of companies live or die depending on how soon they appear on a search engine.
And then the companies sinking thousands into their ad spend wonder why their aren't selling more monitors so they sink MORE money into more ads and then Google comes up with a new section they can charge to advertise in. It's just ads all the way down.
In fact that is when you get the good search results. I often struggle to find what I want to know then the next day... Loads of great search results. It doesn't take Google a second. It takes a full day.
Well yeah, of course. Its bad enough that trillion dollar corporations know what you want to buy. It would be even worse if they know what you actually paid for.
That was the first thing that popped into my head when i saw this in my feed Though I will say John Oliver is funnier in my taste, but I try not to compare my favorites
I thought to myself I'm such a genius for using the reddit route when I looked at reviews, so after Ryan did so as well in the video I laughed out loud cause I didn't expect he would do that and I felt so dumb cause I realized lots of other people use this as well
The trick is to critically analyze posts. One line posts can be ignored, in depth ones are likely more trustworthy. A high end user calling something garbage might mean it's adequate for a budget user, one negative review among hundreds of positive ones is probably a fluke, if two users are arguing over which is best both are probably fine, etc. Of course, to keep things complicated, the exact same product from one year might not be the same quality as the exact same product from another year. Also factor in country of origin, varying manufacturers, quality of subcomponents in given years.... ...At the end of the day, nothing beats a low budget youtuber showing a product on camera. Especially a highly opinionated one that cares more about criticizing brands than marketing them.
Fun fact : if you actually go on the pages following the first one, the total results are normally less than 500 contrary to what Google says on the first page.
Ryan: it sucks when the internet is full of ads because it incentivizes people to recommend products that pay well vs what's actually the best. Also Ryan: Raycon are great earbuds! I'm not even mad. Get your bag baby.
Only two replies! I'll take this as an opportunity to say, please do not buy Raycons. They are terrible. If any product has to be pushed that hard then you know something is wrong. Half the cost of the earbuds goes into paying UA-camrs.
that very easily could explain the conflicting results. Watch-out on so-called "reviews", too... there's an alarming amount of positive reviews on products that were incentivized. I discovered that when looking for a compact flash reader. Ultimately ended-up borrowing from a friend and it did what I needed it to do. These weren't exactly replaceable CFs, either. A bad reader frying them would've really messed-up my day
@JayLeeBeanz quick warning, Creating an account on reddit may make you fatherless and make you gain 200 pounds to your current weight... I've been there. Jokes aside, you can never get rational opinions in reddit cause of its subreddit system hence bias, ex: r/ROG will always say that its the greatest while r/LenovoLegion will say that they are the best and each subreddit might talk sh*t of each other

I'd say he's in touch with current comedy and memes, and I love his skits. Hilarious skits are TIGHT! Buuuuuttt, I did just test the accuracy and a few things: 1) The shopping options showed up on the right side of my screen, not hindering the top. 2) The top two Ad sites: Bestreviews and PCMag. Two reputable consumer review companies, one of which specializing in the product's industry. 3) The top two non-Ad sites: Rtings and PCMAG again. One with a reputation for unbiased reviews, and the other an Ad site, making the Ad placement extra helpful and relevant. 4) Not an ad in sight on the Rtings webpage, and only a banner and side scroll for relevant products on PCMag. Maybe pick a different search if going for accuracy? Funny, yes. Accurate, no.
I appreciate that you put the ad section at the end of the video and not somewhere in the middle - and for a change, it's actually funny so I end up watching the whole thing till the end while I usually skip over any ad sections in other videos 👍

Nice touch with the "I did the search in less than 1 second" - had to check and after all those years they actually still give you the time it took right at the top, lol
Dead Internet Theory, lol
The best part of all that is that it is fake. Google literally just spews out a number.
Do yourself a favor and google ... let's say "potato chips"..
It'll give you about 558.000.000 results in 0.60 seconds.
Now if you scroll ALL the way down, and go to the very last page which should be page 25...
It will show that it actually only found 249 results and that it took multiple seconds.
@@OphionTheTitan Yeah, that's interesting. Thing is, Google does index pretty much the entire internet, and half a billion results sounds reasonable. Here's my educated guess for roughly what Google does and where those numbers come from (based on one university course about search engines):
- Google already has pre-made lists for pages that contain the words 'potato' and 'chips' or synonyms thereof (though in this case it might only be one list for 'potato chips')
- The intersection of those lists (the amount of pages in both lists) is the half a billion number
- Google then ranks every one of those pages based on the search query
- While ranking, it only keeps track of the number of pages it needs (10 for the first results page, 20 for the second, etc.)
- Afterwards it sorts the results and shows them to you
This all only takes a little more than half a second on the first results page.
@@VulturHS no, in this instance it will be 493 results if you include the omitted search results

When a youtube comedy skit speaks to me so deeply, I can cry.

UA-cam is owned by google and most videos run advertising. But at least those ads tend to be unrelated so the video content isn’t as conflicted
You said "Hey, Google. I need a new monitor". My Google Home responded and I believe I'm about to see ads about monitor for the next few months.
Ryan's attention to detail is next level. Well done sir.

Hey there. Got any more room in this boat you got going here?

Literally had to buy a new computer a few days ago. Never even bothered looking at the websites. I looked at UA-cam videos and reviews lmao. Took a few days mulling over between two computers before choosing my favorite one. I hate the way google sets up websites now! XD This was hilarious!! Almost spat out my coffee from laughing so hard!
This video does a great job of explaining a large portion of the reasoning behind my switch to Bing a few years ago. I know, sounds ridiculous… but it’s not that Bing is good, just that it’s better than Google.
Google have lowered their search quality to match their competitors. Spammers also have caught up to them, I've never seen so much spam getting onto Google results until recent years.
Yeah, I hate Bing, but I use it more often then Google. I'm cursed with brand loyalty.
So is the ad at the end of this video the best product for me as a human? I better ask Google…
This reminds me of the time I bought a USB microphone online, and then for weeks I saw nothing but ads for USB microphones. Because clearly the genius marketing AI figured out I was starting a collection.
Having that same issue right now... I bought one delivery of three items, and the adds are only of those specific items... I already got them, and if I needed new ones this fast, I would not be getting from the same brand/site...
But what if you want one in a slightly different colour
You guys have ads?
So effing true it is actually sad... google searching is so frustrating...
FINALLY! A video recognizing the achievements of George Bernard Hansburg! HBD GBH!
These videos are 😂, and I speak for this whole community when I say that we appreciate this content. Also, I love how the WaySus says "made by kids".
I absolutely agree. I remember the good old days when looking anything up on Google actually result in actual educational stuff. Heck I used to use it for research but now I don’t trust anything on there
E
I agree to the fullest, Google is just awful these days. Adding the censorship, removing of "hurtful negative reviews" and the inability to affect your own activities on Google is just icing on a shit cake.
"I'm usually not a huge fan of WaySus in general since they proudly use child labor"
"I like that they provide children with jobs"
The duality of man 😂😂😂
After trying to buy stuff recently, this is amazingly on point and so funny. Love you man.
I always love Ryan George’s videos. They always make me laugh
Agreed
↖️👀😰😵Guys, creepy exploring is here, come and take a look 😱😱😱.....
I’m sure you do, Tyler Miller
I always love [Channel name here]'s videos. They always make me [appropriate emotion for the context here]. This is a total real comment from a real person who definitely watched the whole video.
@@santishorts Ikr and these comments always get tons of likes too it's so annoying
when you make a satirical video about the internet flooded with garbage that someone paid to ad space for to be on top, and finish it off with garbage someone paid for your ad space to be put on top.
I love the amount of detail you put into this -the ads and blurbs are hilarious!!
So glad a new video is online

Thanks Ryan, you just started my Google Home on a 10 minute rant about the best type of monitor.
I love typing a search for a specific company or service, and have to scroll past all their competitor's ads to hopefully find their site
Amazon does that too. If you search for a specific brand it will give you results for other brands.
Ryan is the smartest guy when it comes to the dumbest things. Therefore, he has the unauthorized authority to make jokes about how the systems we all use every day are not necessarily the most effective at performing the tasks we partake in.
Ad: the smartest guy when it comes to the dumbest things…barely an inconvenience
Thanks for the analysis.
How brave of Ryan to make fun of and tell the secret of almighty Google in it's own service.
It’s amazing how much work and time Ryan puts into his videos
Love and Respect

This one is ready for a 2024 rehash with Google trying to fight fire with fire afraid of AI & LLMs.
As an employee of a major online retailer who regularly hears complaints about our SEO, I feel this.
Wow...a cross-sketch with Jon Oliver's show from last night. I'm constantly amazed at Ryan George's innate talent and abilities. HBO hopefully will see the light and give him his own show!
Exactly what I thought. Mirrored Jon Oliver, I feel like he must watch the show, lol. Great way to bring it to life.
@@NoBotOW Ryan's insanely talented, no doubt...but I don't think even he could pull off a whole script and editing, overnight. Perhaps he had it in the hopper? Could be a coincidence. My "stupidest timeline" explanation, is he's working with Jon Oliver.
Hopefully HBO Max won't run a search on Google to find him, they'll most likely get ads from HBO Max and Last Week Tonight instead. lol
I love how the “iiiebebebebe” sound has become suitable for every broken object in the ryanverse
Spot on, I also remember a time where it did not feel so dumbed down or when they where not conducting social experiments on yt.
I like how Google just reveals all of his scummy moves to the guy and neither of them care. It's like 'yeah, I'll scam you and you know you won't put in the effort to avoid it'
Ryan you are amazing! I love your videos. Our sense of humour is the same. This one is so accurate!
I'm trying to laugh without getting immediately more depressed than I already am
I love how the instant i stop using chrome i get this video on the new browser as my first suggestion on youtube. great reminder of why i stopped using google
The main takeaway I learned from this video is that it’s not the size of your ear holes that matter. It’s how you use them. Respect to Ryan for not ear hole size shaming 🤪🤪
The timing of this episode is so on-point makes me wonder if you make these super fast (ala South Park writer room) or just work on a lot of different ones and push the most relevant to the top. Does it make a difference to the viewers?
Nah, but I am interested in knowing how my favourite writers/creators come up with their ideas/content (ala 7 days to Air). Either way great job as always!
it could have been an idea he had for a while since this has been a problem with Google for years
Lmao that's exactly what I do whenever I decide to buy something online. You'd be surprised at the amount of people who do agree on certain items or brands having better quality.
I think we all would have given Ryan a well-deserved bow of approval if he had managed to not have an ad on this particular video. That would have been astounding, but we still love ya buddy.
