A lot of modern fans think boxing began with Ali or even Tyson As such old time GREATS like Benny Leonard, Jimmy Wilde, Ted Kid Lewis, Joe Gans and Sam Langford among many others are too often ignored by casual boxing fans
How the fuck you are casual when you dont know these guys, they lived in a other time and btw they arent greats, they were good boxers, not more. Max Baer, dempsey, marciano, armstrong and joe louis were great.
I'm such a mark for Benny Leonard. I love his story, his fighting style, and the fact that he was such a classy guy out of the ring, but a KILLER inside the ring.
Great Stuff. Benny Leonard. A Legend. His fight with Lew Tendler also marks his quick-witted ability. His Record stood until Roberto Duran. Thanks for posting.
chucknchar T I'm not sure about that. This guy ain't the Ghetto Wizard and all time great lightweight for nothing. Duran's own trainer Ray Arcel raccorded Leonard the highest respect.
@@Cashyoso no he didnt, he said Duran belonged in that caliber of lightweights but he went to his grave saying Leonard the best fighter he ever saw. After No Mas I dont think Ray rated Duran even that highly
There's few footage available unfortunately, but his resume was stacked to the brim and he retired baby faced. Unfortunately the best fight to view him in was his last fight at 36 yrs old vs a prime McLarnin. Even then old, out of shape and half retired the footwork, jabs, defense and timing is ace. Guy was a real master of the ribg
I'm just putting this out there to see if I get a response: my father was the son of benny leonard and Kathryn 'kitty' abrahms (spelling could be different). I have not come across information that they were officially married so this may have been a relationship either before either married or sometime after he married. that really isn't important to me. however, I have been wanting to find out more about benny. I am looking for information regarding where my father was born so I can request a copy of birth certificate as I haven't got one of those in my possession. if anyone knows of leonard having a liaison with a young woman who had a child with him I would certainly be interesting hearing the story. just trying to find out about my family.
Those days were better, when fighters looked to own a division. The lightweights were one of the great divisions but now its just another belt. I blame Henry Armstrong. Winning 3 different titles at three different weights. Better to leave your mark of greatness on one division.
Its very sad such a great boxer was burnt out by 35. And died by 51. You always think of boxers being super fit till the day they die but that's not always the case. I wonder if he had health issues to pass away at just 51. RIP 🙏
He had well over 200 pro fights, he fought in the newspaper decision era where there was no official victory without a KO (why he has so many wins/ko's) and the press just reported their scorecards and who they felt won.
Hey, AL BERNSTEIN is a cool dude! I'm just saying he don't belong in the BOXING HALL OF FAME!!! Al's the best BOXING commentator in the business!!! Has been the best in his field for many years!!!! Jim lamply has gotten better, but he kissed so much ass back in the day, the brown noser that he is!

Leonard would tell you himself he learned from Joe Gans.
Jon Martinez the hell he would, cuz it just isn't true!!! he had mutual respect for him, but Benny's game was based on his own merit!!!
Because the average idiot today does not study 📚 the sweet science 🧪 🥊

Benny Leonard is the Greatest lightweight of all time, No question about it, Leonard was brilliant.
Duran would murder him
chucknchar T I'm not sure about that. This guy ain't the Ghetto Wizard and all time great lightweight for nothing. Duran's own trainer Ray Arcel raccorded Leonard the highest respect.
I agree with Marist...Ray never said Duran could whip Benny.
@@TheG55coffia there's definitely a question about it
Benny's trainer was Ray Arcel, the same guy who trained Roberto Duran.
The great boxing trainer Ray Arcel who was involved in boxing till about age 90, rated him as just that.
Ray Arcel himself said Leonard was the best lightweight ever
Archie moore
And ray arcel said that roberto duran would beat benny leonard

Leonard had over 200 fights, enough to burn out the best by age 36. Many or most fighters these days don't even get near 50 fights in their careers.
The clip didn't say what he died from. Why would he die at that age?
Heart attack
