You mentioned in another comment that because the selection process at Edinburgh is competitive, you find that you're often surrounded by bright medical students who inspire you to improve. Do you ever feel like that can create a pressured, overly-competitive environment where you're struggling to keep up, or are medical students at Edinburgh generally quite cooperative?

I’ve found medicine to be very collaborative at Edinburgh. You want to do the best you can, but you also want everyone else to succeed. Being surrounded by hard workers and also being in a vocational degree naturally inspires you to keep working hard. I’ve found staff and students to generally be very supportive.

Hi Chris! Thanks for the informative video. Would it be possible for you to share notes you have taken in your first year? Or even if you created your own anki decks that you don't mind sharing? I would have messaged privately but I have no idea how to.

Hi AJ! Thanks so much for the comment. I have just uploaded a new video taking you through how I study in med school, which discusses a lot of these points. In short, i’ve never used anki myself, I mostly use Passmed to practice active recall. Also, all the notes that I took in my first year were as an exercise to understand the lecture content more deeply, not as a study resource in itself, so unfortunately I didn’t keep them 😞 I go through this in a lot more detail in the latest video. I hope that all makes sense. Let me know if you have any other questions! 🙂

Hello, I have just been accepted to study medicine at Edinburgh and I am trying to decide whether this is the medical school for me or if I should pick somewhere else. So I just wondered if you might be able to share your experience studying here (especially the first few years) and what you liked or didn’t like? I know that’s quite a lot to ask but I’d appreciate any advice you have. Thanks

Hi Isla. First of all, congratulations! It's a huge achievement to get into medical school. I am going to make a detailed video about my experience at Edinburgh Medical School very soon but I will give you some of my main points.
      1. Edinburgh is an amazing and beautiful place to study, live and work.
      2. All the staff in the medical school are very helpful
      3. You get to study anatomy with cadaveric prosections
      4. Early clinical experience with a weekly teaching session in a local GP practice in year 2
      5. Given how competitive Edinburgh is, i'm always surrounded by people far smarter than me so am always driven to improve myself professionally.
      6. I really don't have any major dislikes that are specific to Edinburgh. I would like to have some dissection-based anatomy teaching, but I understand that the use of prosections are probably better given the limited time allotted to anatomy teaching.
I guess my main point is that it's an incredibly prestigious university and i'm studying medicine, so i'm just really grateful that i'm in this incredibly fortunate position in life and any cons in the course are far out weighed by the positives.
I hope that helped in some way. I will give a far more detailed overview in the video that will be out soon!

Hello! I was wondering if the amount of time you spent studying in this video is comparable to the amount of time you spent studying in your first year of medicine? And on that note, do you happen to know if the level of work/time you're expected to study for is the same across all UK med schools?
Also, have you found your experience at Edinburgh to be a positive one? I've been given an offer to study medicine at Edinburgh from September (so long as A Levels don't go awfully!!) and am trying to make sure it's the right place for me. I know it's quite a prestigious place, so I wondered if it still manages to be supportive and friendly too? Thanks :)

Hi Hannah, thanks for the comment! I do think I spent around the same amount of time studying now as I did during the pre-clinical years of medicine (although i’m a postgrad medic so I skipped 1st year of medicine and went straight into 2nd year, but from what I hear a similar work ethic was required in 1st year). I would expect that a similar work ethic would be required across all UK med schools. Congratulations on your Edinburgh offer! I have found my experience at Edinburgh to be very positive. The staff and other students have been very supportive and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. I hope that helps!

Hello, just wondered if you are in the standard 6-year medicine course? If so, are there many post-grad student in your cohort? Did you need to get a first class honours to get into this course? Thank you!

Hi William. Thank you so much for supporting the channel! I am in the standard 6-year medicine course. There are around 5 postgrads in my year. I achieved a 2:1 in my BSc (Hons) Medical Sciences degree and applied to medicine while undertaking an MSc Human Anatomy. My medicine offer from Edinburgh was unconditional as I had already been awarded my undergraduate degree. I hope that helps!
