@Metal Haze Hermit Dravid obviously helped but the credit isn't solely his contrary to popular opinion. Believe it or not from 90's BCCI took several steps to change Indian domestic cricket. For example Dhalmia formed TRDW. TRDW association found Dhoni,Riana etc directly from their home town. If anyone deserves to be at the helm of the refined system which BCCI tirelessly built is Rahul Dravid.

I recall an interview of Ganguly where he said nowadays we see all those football coaches in European leagues and think that cricket needs that. He said what people doesn't understand that you can't teach anything new to players at international level. He sum it up saying- "Cricket is a captain's game and the coach should take a back seat there". That is main reason Ganguly still tolerating Shastri.
whatver it may, whether it was a geniune loss, or it was fixed. 1996 semifinal will always be etched as a momentous loss in the minds of the Indian players who played that day, and also to the fans. the great win against Pak in the quarters also painfully brings back the memories of this match, which we cannot forget.
I remember we were hopping like crazy after the first over, when Jayasurya and Kaluwitharna were out. All the euphoria just fizzled out after the match.

I agree, but the fact of matter is Srilanka was easily the stronger team during 1996 WC, and they lost that strength later on.
May be srilankan team was strong but Indian team was also second to none just because of few players (match fixers ) we lost the match otherwise India was winning it quite comfortabely

lost to sri lanka twice in 96 wc and then in 2007 wc too when again sri lanka knocked india out of the wc 99 and 2003 wc matches were group matches but when it comes to knockouts sri lanka had upper hand on india from 95 to 2008

Srinath was the greatest fast bowler India ever produced, who used to consistently bowl in excess of 150 KMph, no other Indian had done that consistently. Yet I dont see this gem of a person in any panel of cricket. He is to me a forgotten hero and my favorite bowler of all times.

As the games used to be fixed by the captain himself, and he was fighting a losing battle even before the toss. Whatever he could he did, sometimes he was successful in taking us past the finishing line, sometimes not so.

But jst one thing it was not Quaterfinal game it was the semifinal game. Quaterfinal we won against Pakistan.. Maybe thats why few cried because we were only one step away from the finals.. which means a bit more close...👍👍

But the fact also is, those who know that they maynot be right at times in getting emotional resist hard, from crying even in difficult times as if its big thing achieved to not just cry.
Sachin maybe the Legend of cricket and also in manners but in my opinion still acts too diplomatic, sometimes even behaving like that out of the way just to see himself well mannered. Praveen G i remember it was a bowling pitch. if i am not wrong India won the toss and asked Sri Lanka to bat first. Later Arjuna Ranatunga said something like "it was a good to lose the toss". it was really heartbreaking to hear that after losing the match and the crowd trouble that ensured later.

1. Only world cup to be won by a co-host nation.
2. Only final in which both captains were left handed batsman
3. Only final match to be held in pakistan
4. Pakistan is the only country which hosted a world cup final without hosting a semi final match !!!!
5. Only final to have a century in a success full chase. Arvinda di silva scored 107.

It was decided in the dressing room before the match that India will bat after winning the toss but Azharuddin decided to ball after winning the toss.
