Billboard proves to me the words of little dicky "I grew up I wanted to be a star I wanted to be a rapper I wanted to be great I wanted to be a factor then I looked at nick cannon and realized talent didn't matter" if you caught the end of that you see the rap game coming from a person hugely influenced by punk and darker hip hop its gotten a lot worse than when fetty was in the game although props to him for selling with one eye get your bag and I will never not give anyone props for getting there bag so get that straight
@@UndisputedGH05T I'm a millennial and I'm pretty sure Mike is too. I think you have to be 37 or older to be Gen X at this point and 13 or younger to be a Zoomer.
@@UndisputedGH05T I'm a millennial and I hate pop music because to me I hate the fuckers who say look at my money cars houses Fuck you attitude versus the music I'm into is more reality than fantasy plus the music has more means when humans make it from blood sweat and tears versus a computer and lazy song writing today's music is more of a product and lifestyle rather than be a art for the people to enjoy
Adele, Joan Jett, Amy winehouse, Janis Joplin, Hayley Williams, Stevie nicks, Amy Lee, Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morisette and dozens more amazing female muscians exist. And these pc college kids think Cardi B is queen? What?
Don’t forget Pink, one of the few pop artists I like, probably because she has her own mind, isn’t a bones-only lipsyncing puppet but actually delivers live as she does on her albums accompanied by amazing air gymnastics
I appreciate from the bottom of my heart, the wrath you have helped us all express toward Cardi B fans. For Cardi B fans, "wrath" means a large amount of hate, or hate reaching a potentially dangerous level (for Cardi B fans, "potential - *ADVERB*: potentially" means everything something can do)
Yes, indees, my friend! I completely agree! She is a plague. Everything she has made has made my ears bleed, and want to carve them off with a rusty spoon. Literally nothing about anything I've heard from her is appealing. I wish someone would pay her to go away because I sure as sugar don't have the funds...Mind you, I'm not commenting on her as a person. She might be a nice person or she might be an asshole, I really don't pay attention. Either way, I'm only repulsed by her work as a "musician", not her as a human being.
As a 21 years old girl who definitely can't understand the appeal of the shit we hear on the radio: thank you. I understand why you don't like making those kind of videos but for those of us who don't speak, like you said, this is fucking satisfying. Greetings from France
That doesn't make much of a difference. I hated Seinfeld when it was actually relevant. It was boring. And my musical taste would typically be held as, by this crowd, as good. I am not fond of pop. I'm typically into what is called Classic Rock as that is what I grew up with. It is what I play on my guitar. And again I detest Seinfeld. So using that as an indictment of anyone is just dense.
lildballin86 Those kids don’t have a bright future after college if they are just gonna be snowflakes and listen to this nonsensical bullcrap for music.
I agree. This video makes me feel ashamed for my own generation even though I know that there are plenty who despise pop as much as me. FBE should diversify their group, not in order to be "culturally appropriate", but to show their younger audience that not everyone has the same tastes in music.
FBE wants to keep things too positive ... there are other reactors who would seem to not like these songs but they weren't there to react .. FBE picked those who would enjoy that ...
You're not wrong when you say most college aged kids feel alienated.I've felt somewhat like an Outcast since I turned 16.I know I felt distanced from a lot of people my age,and even some older people I know.I can sit and talk about some of my favorite bands like crazy. For example,Alice in Chains.I tell people how I love their music and though some subject matter have no direct meaning to what I'm dealing with,I find a way to some meaning in it for myself.Layne Staley (original lead singer of the band.)Was asked a question about what the songs' meanings are about and his answer was this. The songs are things we're thinking about. Then we wrote them down, then you listen to them and whatever you think they're about. That's what they're about.I took that heart like he was saying if the songs have some meaning for you then it's for you.I also feel some relation too him and lead guitarist and backing vocalist (now lead vocalist,) Jerry Cantrell. Both had fathers who weren't there or were there but, might as well not been.I have that same relationship with my father. It's crazy you know man?A 21 yr old finding more meaningful of a relation with a band who made it big nearly 30 yrs ago over artist his own age.I try to get people my age into my bands but they say and I quote, "why do you listen to this devil worshipping garbage?"I guess they just go with what is popularized at time and think everything is unworthy of listening to.
That sucks. My friends don't always know what I'm talking about or relate to my music taste but they atleast indulge me from time to time. Online music forums are absolutely beautiful if you ever want to speak to others about music. Btw, Alice in Chains is fantastic! my favorite AIC song is 'would?'. What's your favorite?
@@oo4758 they are man I made some friends on them that I hope one day can meet in person. And I love every thing Alice own every thing by them but Black Gives Way to Blue.If I had to choose one song it'll have to be Rain When I Die.It's an awesome song too me that doesn't get enough recognition on DIRT.
i fell the same with you when i was a highschooler senoir to be specific i got really into nirvana i pickup the guitar and learn to sing better and formed a band with my friend but into later senior year people would bully me becuse i like nirvana to this day i dont why they did also becuse i started to listen to nirvana i grew my hair out and started to wear flannel and when people started to bully me i felt alienated and deppresed but im glad nirvana was there to help it
Hey Ryan, hope you're doing well. I would say my favourite song from Alice In Chains is Damn That River, it changes quite a bit seeing as I literally love every song of theirs. I've always felt a connection to AIC and just like the quote from Layne, I find meaning through my own experience. I got to see them live which I'm eternally grateful for and I brought along a friend of mine so she could experience something new. I managed to get two of my friends to listen and like Alice In Chains which is pretty cool and I'm sure you'll find people who love the same music as you do. People can be dicks about these types of things and never fully give it a go, and it's so annoying when you tell people you listen to rock and they look at you crazy. At one point I was embarrassed to tell people what kind of music I listen to but now literally everyone I know, knows and they're totally cool with it and even encourage me to play my music at parties.
Mike there is a lot "why?" in this video, and I'm gonna give you an answer. people are surrounded by these "hits" and they tend to be catchy so they get familiar with the beat also the artist's voice... a little time passes and the consumer starts to ask themselves if they like this "music",and the media, especially social media, is like "YES! OFCOURSe you Dooo CARDI IS QweeeeeNN!" So they think it's actually good .That's also the reason people start getting annoyed by these tracks when they're overplayed. Cause their adoration doesn't come from liking these songs ,but from being used to it.
Im 2 years late but fuck that bullshit mentality people nowadays "like" a song not because its good but because they think its catchy and has a NiCe BeAT and to be honest i dont blame them for likig that kind of music because its overplayed and when a song is overplayed it sometimes tend to "grow on you" and you will eventually like it
Let me save you all some time. Why specifically do you like [insert artist]? "He goes hard bro" "His beats are hard" "He's a banger" "His songs are straight heat" "Seriously. He just goes hard. Like he actually just literally goes hard" "His songs are hype asf bro"
Female counterparts include excessive use of the words 'bop', 'bad', 'iconic' (especially for new artists), 'she's only 17'' (usually Billie Eilish), 'queen' and 'lit'
I needed that message at the end. As a college freshman surrounded by all the partying, pop loving socialites, I have very few options for people to bond over music with. I get self conscious listening to music I like, around my family now, because i've been programmed to think i'm weird for liking what I like. Fuck that noise. Thanks Mike.
Gotta say, that last bit about alienation really struck a chord with me, as I am one of those people who constantly feels alienated from peers and other people my own age due to taste in music. It might seem silly, but music is such a huge part of our lives. It has place almost everywhere you go, with everything you do, and that includes social situations. When you cannot connect with the same music as everyone else, you become the outlier, you are separate from the group, you are alone. And yeah, there are lots of times where I can't help but ask "what's wrong with me?" But thankfully, not here. Cheers, Mike. This channel makes me feel less alone in world of bad pop music.
Couldn't agree more with you. I feel like that as well, with most people I talk to. That's why I feel so compelled to write all these comments on almost every music related video I watch on UA-cam. It helps me to connect with other like minded individuals that I rarely meet in my day to day life.
I don't understand why this disconnect is there spesifically because of the music. I am generally from the same mentality too. I generally listen to stuff like Dream Theater, Opeth, Bach etc. and many of my friends listen to whatever's popular. That never made me feel alienated. People can like wahtever they like. You come once to this life, let people have that freedom.
FBE is all about POP CULTURE PANDERING. I was about to comment in that video when I first saw it but I was like why am I trying to talk sense into a bunch of 17 year olds who lost brain cells when they hit puberty.
I'm 24 and have stopped listening to the Radio all together because of how shitty the music is. Instead I have all the music and singers I like on my ipod that I listen to every day.
when metal bands put curse words in their music people think its absurd, but when rappers absolutely fully barrages their songs with the same words they go nuts and thinks its cool
I'm a college kid and everything you said after 17:18 just resonated with me. I'm so glad I found your channel, I finally feel like I know people who share the same idea about music as I do.
I guess what the kids like about certain rappers today is that they're really trying to sound somewhat 'educated' when it comes to rapping. The main thing a rap-head is listening for are: 0. Soak in the beat (But it actually doesn't matter since a good rap is a good rap no matter what beat is playing). 1. The message inside the lyrics. Good or bad, where is this going?! 2. The flow / the technical side of presenting your lyrics towards the 'beat'. 3. The actual musicality of the rap. Tonality, mix, syncopation and.. yeah.. fu*king etc. I'm not a rap/hip hop fan at all but my older brothers are and this is what I learned is the importance in a rap song, the lyrics and the flow. The kids couldn't even say that.........
Jackson Maine once said: " Look, talent comes everywhere, but having something to say and a way to say it to have people listen to it, that's a whole other bag." Everyone can sing, but a real artist pass a message in a way that people hear it and then think of it. In todays music most of the artist dont pass a message that people can think of it, some artist try to pass this messages but ended up failing in every other aspect of the song.
Man, the last few minutes of this video hit close to home. Although I get along fine with most of my peers I find it difficult to relate to them. We don't act the same, we don't have the same interests, and we don't share the same values. It took me a long time to realize that there isn't something wrong with me and this video really helped with that.
Never understood why people Stan cardi No talent, just seems rude and snobbish. People say "she's being her true self" and that's concerning. Being rude is a coping mechanism, the unhealthiest one, for low self worth. Being rude, calling people out and insulting people for no reason isn't cool.
I liked Maroon 5 when they were an alt-Rock band in the 90s (Kara’s Flowers) and even some of the early 2000s pop stuff (Songs About Jane, It Won’t Be Soon Before Long) but after Moves Like Jagger, it just became Adam Levine’s solo project and the quality has just deteriorated.
Chelsea is so cute and adorable, but I feel like her tastes in music comes from watching her friends enjoy that music and her being happy that it makes them happy. She’s a really nice person. I just feel like she’s too involved in remembering her friends’ experiences with the music than actually really thinking about the quality of the music on if and why she actually likes it for herself.
It's 2019. I live with my grandma too. Difficult to avoid when you live in the city with the highest unemployment rate in Canada + some of the most expensive gasoline in north america. Not to mention the continually increasing prices of everyday expenses like food.
I am SO glad that Mike and many of the viewers have the same opinion about this kind of music. Pretty much everyone in my age group listens to this kind of stuff EXCLUSIVELY, kind of makes you feel like an outcast, you know?
I’m not a big rock/metal fan (I’m more of a edm/rap/r&b fan) but I can definitely agree with what you said. It’s definitely more about the person and the look now than the actual talent and that is so heartbreaking. It’s all about what’s catchy and overused beats than actually putting in effort to be innovative and more creative. (Not saying these artists don’t put in any effort just not enough to really reach on a level more than just catchy.) That’s why i appreciate underground artists more than mainstream artists because they actually put heart into their music. Btw love your videos they crack me up and you give valid points
"Music taste in the world has declined, substantially". FBE just released the elders reacting to the top 10 songs of the 1970s. 80% of it was shit. The most popular music is usually bland, shallow garbage because that's what appeals to the unthinking masses who "just want to have a good time".
I legitimately relate alot to the end of this video. I'm autistic and a metal fan. I already feel alienated enough from my peers. All of them being such big fans of acts like Taylor swift makes it so much harder to relate than it already is. Me being autistic makes it incredibly difficult to voice why I don't like their music, and why I like what I do. It's like walking on eggshells. It also makes it easier for them to just keep me at a distance. So I sincerely thank you for doing videos like this. It really does help me in my day to day life. Perhaps just as much as the music I love does. Sorry for the lack of ire! Keep on keeping on.
I can relate to your comment my friend. I'm autistic and a rock and roll fan (mainly punk but that comes under the broad umbrella of rock and roll) and I feel alienated from my mates and peers especially since I'm in school atm
Very important video, seriously. Thank you, Mike, for speaking up for those who are, as you say, musically and culturally alienated. The pop industry is poisoning and stultifying the souls of our children and adolescents. If this doesn't stop, worldwide Idiocracy will become real. Regards from Germany.
Ben McInnes my favorite rap duo atm is $uicideboy$ even though $crim have ended up mumble rapping cause of all the drugs hes taking on a daily basis...solo rap its Ghostemane
It's hard to get to every video on you tube but but when see something that speaks the absolute truth you have to comment that it totally gives you recognition that somebody that totally understands what is wrong with today's culture is speaking for you thanks Mike rock on bro!
Thank you for that speech at the end mike. You really do kinda feel like the odd one out when everyone around you is listening to garbage pop and trap and they look at you weird for listening to something else like metal, classical, or rock. I’m not saying my taste in music is great necessarily but it’s leagues above what you generally hear from billboard. Keep up the great videos man 🤘🏻
I agree, this was a good year for music but not for this bullshit. Three Days Grace's Outsider, Breaking Benjamin's Ember, Godsmack's When Legends Rise, Five Finger Death Punch's And Justice for None, Ghost's Prequelle, and Disturbed's Evolution, now those albums had some sick tunes P.S. I'm a college kid.... P.P.S. Slipknot's latest single has a line in it that I feel kids these days need to hear "Repeat after me: I will not celebrate mediocrity. I will not worship empty shells. I will not listen to worthless noises. I will not subject myself to select and predictable choices. My time, my attention, my quality should not be bought and sold for convenience's sake"
Still going to disagree. There are plenty of years that had better music, had a bigger impact on the music world and have stood the test of time. How about 1983, sure it gave us Thriller, but it when David Bowie reinvented himself as the thin white duke, The Police experimented by adding reggae to their songs, ZZ Top dumped replaced Frank Beard with a drum machine and released some of their best known songs. It was also a breakout year for the Metal industry with Quiet Riot, Def Leppard, Motley Crue and Ozzie Osbourne working their way into the mainstream success. Then there is 1991 when Nirvana and grunge took the music world by storm, Metallica released the Black Album, Guns and Roses upped the ante by releasing two versions of Use Your Illusion and Whitney Houston gave us the best rendition ever of the Star Spangled Banner. Country music was seeing a changing of the guard as Garth Brooks and Billy Ray Cyrus were replacing George Jones and Kenny Rodgers. Don't forget Rocks formative years in the mid 50's with Chuck Berry and Elvis or the late 60's with the Motown and the British Invasion. I'm sorry but music from my generation sucks balls. That is why I spend most my time seeking out music from before I was even born.
Connie Smith Oh great, another “le wrong generation” kid. You really need to expand your horizons. There have been a lot of albums released in the last fifteen years years by bands and artists, old and new, that are incredible, some even surpassing shit released decades ago (like Haken’s “Visions” and Woods Of Ypres’ “Woods 5: Grey Skies and Electric Light”).
I love your critics Mike, don’t listen to haters, its not your fault they like crappy music 😉 Edit: Also on a side note, god this college students are way too cringy
I can answer pretty much all of your questions: it’s catchy. The average person in the mainstream doesn’t know any music theory, they’ve never listened to classical music outside of a Disney movie and they like this kind of production. The melodies are simple, yet perfectly written by the artists and/or their writers to apply tension and release in the chord progression and melodies so that it gives the most pleasure to the most people the most often. This leads to them being repetitive and musically boring, but also, that’s why people like it. Also, on another note, most of these songs are built on electronic production, in electronic production, as I’m sure you’re aware, the synthesiser and sampler are the instruments of the producer. In most of these songs the things the people love about the song are the work of the producer and not the artist. As an electronic producer this makes me very angry. All of the actual musical work is being done by the people getting 0 recognition in many of these songs. I agree with you on most of this though for different reasons. The vast majority of the music on the radio is complete trash. I say that as a metal head, and electronic producer, a punk fan, a rock fan, and an unashamed fan of fucking skrillex. Maybe that’s something both electronic and metal fans can agree on.
It's funny how you mention that these college kids are handpicked and are not representative of people that age. 100% true. To me these college aged kids are straight out of central casting. For all we know they might be shills paid to give those positive reactions. Also a big thank you for pointing out and defending us people who feel like outsiders. How can shit like Cardi B or whoever the fuck else can truly relate to this on any human level? The "music" is completely narcissistic and these "musicians" make no bones that is just that. Thanks for this excellent summation of everything that is wrong with music/culture today Mike. Rock the fuck on.
I feel like people who are going so apeshit for all of nowadays pop stars (Ariana Grande or Cardi B or others) are fans of their personality and charisma, not specifically their music. And they consume their music because it's popular and catchy, I guess? Being honest, I don't understand their appeal in any other way.
Ariana's music isn't just popular and catchy, though; it's _leagues_ above most of her contemporaries. Of course it's perfectly valid if you personally dislike her music, but she does have undeniable skill far greater than anyone else currently active in the pop scene, and it's really not fair to place her in the same category as many other pop artists who, like you said, are enjoyed far more for their personality and catchiness than their actual musical skill. I say all of that as someone who does still enjoy a bit of pop music, and who isn't a rabid Ariana fan. Even though I enjoy plenty of it, I admit that most pop artists aren't actually good on a technical level. Ariana clearly is, though, with her production being better than most, and obviously her incredibly strong voice being the defining trait.o
It actually is quite scary that people claim to like things but don’t actually have any specific reasons why, almost as if people feel that they need to like popular music to “fit in”, and actually don’t truly enjoy what they’re listening to.
dumbass: oh drake is good at rap mike: what makes drake good? Dumbass: rapping Mike: what about rapping hes good at dumbass: he's just good at rapping and he's fire. i love his music mike: your just repeating what your saying because you have no good reasons why you like drake. pretty much most people don''t have good reasons why they enjoy an artist.
I loved Mike Shinoda- Post Traumatic. Over Again really hit after my grandfather passed away. Running from my shadows, I listen to when I am feeling depressed, crossing the line, I listened to after my depression and health issues were declining. I like the storytelling Mike is expressing throughout the album, the album takes you on a journey. the first part of the album takes you through the darker side of grief, the second part takes you getting through it but never really and sometimes the pain is still there, the third part is about moving and staying strong. Nothing makes sense anymore, watching as I fall are also songs I enjoy. I write my own music( sometimes it has a positive message other times it is darker.) I write to express what I am going through. when my grandfather passed away I turned to music to deal with the grief, with my depression, suicidal thoughts at times, health issues; music helps me to remember that life will get better, and thankfully I am doing a lot better now than I was before. At the end of the day, music should connect to you and takes you on a journey.
@@christophersmith1670 I completely agree on post traumatic. Shinoda is the only new or newer rap artist that I like. Not a huge rap fan in general but love fort minor and post traumatic. Both underrated albums
So there is a song by a band that Mike doesn't particularly love and doesn't know why they became popular but, I love. That song is Daddy by Korn! Now I am going to accept Mike's challenge and explain in specific terms why I love the song Daddy by, Korn! Daddy is by far Korn's darkest song. It is the song in which the lead singer Johnathan Davis reflects on an experience where he was raped by a neighbor and no one believed him. The song is particularly dark in it's arrangement. The bass is really heavy and provides a dark edge in the way the chords are written. The guitars also have this darker tone. The song makes use of lower chords and a dark note progression. The song is arranged in D minor but also makes frequent use of sharper notes. (I don't really know much about music theory or writing notes so if I'm wrong just let me know. I am interested in hearing more about the writing of this song from a music theory prospective.) This provides the listener with a sense of fear. The sounds this song makes are really unsettling and horrifying and makes you feel as though this is the sound you would hear if you were being raped. The lyrics expresses the feelings Jonathan Davis felt in his experience. I love this song because I connect with it in a very personal and profound way. I was raped when I was a kid. I felt similar emotions that Johnathan expressed in the song. I would have theses introspective self dialogues to try to understand what happened to me. I then try to take those intrinsically negative emotions and turn them into positive energy so that I can empathize with people who have had similar experiences and try to bring some positive change so that they feel less alone. That is why I love Daddy by, Korn. It lets you know that even when these horrible things happen to you know that you are not alone and that there is someone who cares. Please speak up if you or someone you know is dealing with rape. It's hard to talk about but, if you can find the courage to be honest with yourself the truth will free you .
I completely agree. As someone who gets alienated and called a satanist for the music I listen to I really appreciate you being a voice for us. 99.9% of popular music now is dog shit and the artists that actually care about their music and care about making a decent product to actually connect with people get buried by drug addicts and strippers who think they can sing and it is infuriating. Why not give spotlight to a band like Beartooth whose goal is to reach out to people on the verge of self harm and try to convince them not to do it. They have a line in the song Body Bag that says: “One life and one decision. Make sure it ends with you still living.” But instead of that being played... we get Bodak Yellow and In My Feelings. I’m glad you are making a stand for decent music and for all of us who get outcasted
I'm glad Twenty One Pilots isn't on the top 10. That means they actually made a really good album. I don't know why but I really want Mike's opinion on them, he gave jumpsuit a plus sign, which was good.
A lot of their material is creative and has some depth. Part of why they are developing a loyal fan base. Meanwhile Cardi B's fans will dump her in 2 years when they have forgotten about her songs and some new pop flavor of the month catches their attention.
Why have u now come to my life and not earlier? I honestly thought I was going insane and that their was something wrong with me! *ur speech at the end almost made me cry
I feel like saying that a lot of people liking something doesn't make it good is hypocritical considering you could say that you personally not liking it doesn't make it bad. Music can be viewed both objectively and subjectively, getting upset about someone's personal subjective music taste because it doesn't match your personal taste. I don't like 90% of pop music or rap music but I don't claim that those 90% of those songs are shit.
I love this guy so much man seriously thank you so much for having the balls to say this stuff that pop stars and pop music fans are afraid to say Why can't people be open to different types of music instead of this candy land hello kitty crap that's on the radio literally 247 It genuinely makes me sad
I fucking love you dude, you pretty much said everything, it's really fucking hard getting into the music business nowadays when there are so many talentless idiots taking up all the space. I'm taking a music HND at my college and it's really discouraging because the educational board expects you to be able to do all this stuff that sometimes is useful for future reference, but most of the time it just feels like they're trying to "normalize" my creativity. "Your song must be a maximum of 3:30" why? As wierd as it may sound, it's VERY hard for me to keep a song short because when I start writing, as soon as ideas start coming to my head they just don't stop so they end up being over 5 minutes long. "You will be learning how to use and operate synths" 1. I don't even know how to play a fucking keyboard/piano so how do you expect me to get along with that 2. Why the fuck can I not go and learn how to better myself at my CHOSEN instrument? Or even better, learn a new one! I think it's gotten to the point now where it doesn't matter how good you are, society will always just follow the preference of those in charge.
Those same people on the fine Bros/react channels are basically paid to react in an exaggerated way to the point of them being manufactured. If you watch the recent h3 video on them, it becomes even more apparent.
1minutetalkshow actually spoke to 2 of the former members of kids react and they basically exposed how horrible it was and they weren’t actually allowed to say what they actually thought. And you mentioned them getting paid. But they weren’t actually getting paid enough said by also a former fbe reactor
Thank you mike. The last few minutes described me perfectly, I’m in college and I’ve never had any use for pop music, and sometimes I wondered if I simply don’t give it a chance because I like being contrary, or maybe I’m just a prick. And while that may be partly true, I know the real reason is because it is meaningless garbage. It’s the same reason that for me, a guy who grew up on country music, can’t listen to country radio, because it is mass reproduced, generic, meaningless bullshit. And because of people like you I can be proud of knowing I’m not simply drinking the koolaid, I’m genuinely thinking about what’s going into my mind. So thank you for giving us a voice Mike, keep on rocking 🤘
So I do like Pop music but 90% of is not from music from today. There are some artists I like such as Kelly Clarkson or Lady Gaga because they can actually sing and sing well. but my favorite singers are people like Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and lately Queen. Whitney and Celine because I consider them 2 of the best female vocalists of all time and Queen because Freddie Mercury's voice is legendary and can make people feel what he's singing.
ana iglesias because the "popular" music is so trashy it has caused me to turn to country and rock music which isn't terrible because it let's me branch out in my musical tastes.
Agarthan Reaper I forgot about that. I love Avenged Sevenfold. I think they are severely underrated and the guys there have that musical talent that the gatekeepers say they don’t.
you always say the things i want people to hear about popular music. too bad most of their brains have been damaged by it and they just say "you are a hater"
The thing about music and young people is not everyone has taken a great deal upon themselves to discover and explore all the music in the world and they fall into the "whatever is current" category. Says a lot about our society
I love pipebomb in the end, especially when you said you are the voice of the ones who don't speak, it reminded me of CM Punk and you guys have a similar personality. That said, thanks for that message, I am one of those college kids that feels alienated because of the reasons you mention. I just do not get how they put these "artists" in such a high pedestal. Thanks again for the awesome rant in the end. I try to do my part by making my own music and covers too. Rock on!
Hey, Mike! I'm a fan of your work and a metalhead. But in the spirit of the channel, I'll play devils advocate. You said that all pop sounds the same. But in another video you said that to older people all metal sounds the same. Couldn't that be the same way except your the elder and this is metal? You dont like it and it sounds the same, but to them it sounds different and they like it. Older people also say things about how metal and rock had no meaning and no soul compared to their jazz and big band. Again, couldn't it be the same just moved forward a few generations? Ps, thanks so much for the ending speech. It was spot on and perfect. You're another Corey Taylor. Speaking for us.
I think I addressed this in another video. There is a LOT of metal that literally sounds the same and is recycled. They aren't off the chopping block lol.
I see the connection you are making there, but I think back when rock was In it’s heyday, it was very revolutionary especially with the rise of electric bass and guitar and distortion, etc. So to a lot of people it was very strange because it was this completely new crazy thing and there was so much experimentation going around, so of course people were bound to resist because well, people just don’t like change. I think now the problem is people are just getting tired of hearing the same old crap over and over again. There is NO experimentation especially on the radio, and that’s why people who actually care about music just hate it. Atleast that’s how I see it
I see the connection you made but it's filled with holes. First of all even in the video a girl says "I thought that was the same exact beat." and another girls repeats that. So no, even they don't think it's different. Second of all, Older people's disconnection to metal generaly doesn't come from the music itself but from the enviroment that they grew in and were told that this kind of music was satanic. Because of this they don't even attend to listen to the music itself and judge it that way. But when it comes to Mike and a lot of us hating pop music it is 100% because of the music itself. I agree with metal sounding similar sometimes but that applies to all music genres. And pop music industry takes all the songs that sound repetitive, brain washing and incredibly similar and market those to the masses. Because of this capitalist system and this consumeristic culture people are used to consuming everything very fast and just jumping on something another. This prevents art that is layered with meaning and emotion but takes time to understand to get popular. Just remember the movie Blade Runner 2049. For a lot of people who understanded art it was a fricking masterpiece but it miserably failed in the box office. So no, pop music isn't the metal and we're the elders of this time. Pop "art" is just a way that media and industries use to brain wash people and gain more money from them and most people are okay with that wether they know it or not because they don't care about art that makes you think. I'm gonna use a quote from Mr. Robot because when Elliot says "Fuck society" he's not wrong.
I fucking love this guy 😂 it’s nice to see someone else who gets so irritated by how fucking bad mainstream pop music is and how dumb the people who consume it are. 👍🏼
I get a lot of shit for being different in school and when I show them different music they always say "this is music?". It makes me want to slap them so hard in the face. Some people just don't like people making music with instruments then a machine making trap beats and ugly fucking synth leads.

Fucking same here. These kids do not represent me at all haha
And I love every thing Alice own every thing by them but Black Gives Way to Blue.If I had to choose one song it'll have to be Rain When I Die.It's an awesome song too me that doesn't get enough recognition on DIRT.
i fell the same with you when i was a highschooler senoir to be specific i got really into nirvana i pickup the guitar and learn to sing better and formed a band with my friend but into later senior year people would bully me becuse i like nirvana to this day i dont why they did also becuse i started to listen to nirvana i grew my hair out and started to wear flannel and when people started to bully me i felt alienated and deppresed but im glad nirvana was there to help it
TL;DR

I know I’m a year late but good explanation 👏👏
Im 2 years late but fuck that bullshit mentality people nowadays "like" a song not because its good but because they think its catchy and has a NiCe BeAT and to be honest i dont blame them for likig that kind of music because its overplayed and when a song is overplayed it sometimes tend to "grow on you" and you will eventually like it

And yeah, there are lots of times where I can't help but ask "what's wrong with me?"
But thankfully, not here. Cheers, Mike. This channel makes me feel less alone in world of bad pop music.

Yesss Mike does a ranting video this made my day
I guess what the kids like about certain rappers today is that they're really trying to sound somewhat 'educated' when it comes to rapping. The main thing a rap-head is listening for are:
I'm so glad this channel exists. This channel feels like a place I can go to and understand the creator (mike) and feel understood as a watcher.

I legitimately relate alot to the end of this video. I'm autistic and a metal fan. I already feel alienated enough from my peers. All of them being such big fans of acts like Taylor swift makes it so much harder to relate than it already is.

Tbf, Ariana Grande does at least know how to sing
Cardi B, no. Just no
Ythequeris exactly true. I feel like lots of people force themselves to like it because so many others do
Yeah its pretty sad
Ariana is alright. No tears left to cry is a great pop song. She's actually somewhat saving pop music right now.
It actually is quite scary that people claim to like things but don’t actually have any specific reasons why, almost as if people feel that they need to like popular music to “fit in”, and actually don’t truly enjoy what they’re listening to.
dumbass: oh drake is good at rap
mike: what makes drake good?
Dumbass: rapping
Mike: what about rapping hes good at
dumbass: he's just good at rapping and he's fire. i love his music
mike: your just repeating what your saying because you have no good reasons why you like drake.
pretty much most people don''t have good reasons why they enjoy an artist.
Even good rap albums got snubbed yet Cardi B is dominating the Grammys.
Grammys are the largest dumpster fire in existence
all the grammys are now just a tribute to the spotify playlist of a 12 year old girl
The Grammys, the Oscars, all of those award shows are nothing but jokes.
Seriously, Pusha T got the Grammy nod and IMO that was the best in the Rap category and even one of the best Rap albums in general last year.
@@christophersmith1670
I completely agree on post traumatic.
I am interested in hearing more about the writing of this song from a music theory prospective.)
This provides the listener with a sense of fear.
Honestly, 21 Pilots was one of the only good pop artists recently
@@Fizzlepop72 I personally dislike them
I genuinely don't know who 21 Pilots is/was, and it's 2021.
I love this guy so much man seriously thank you so much for having the balls to say this stuff that pop stars and pop music fans are afraid to say
Why can't people be open to different types of music instead of this candy land hello kitty crap that's on the radio literally 247
It genuinely makes me sad
I love this video. Finally someone out there speaking for the fringes and voiceless.
Yo, Mike's a sick youtuber man. I love Mike.
EDIT: The end was on point. Thank you for taking one for us, I guess xD
"You will be learning how to use and operate synths"
1. I don't even know how to play a fucking keyboard/piano so how do you expect me to get along with that
2. Why the fuck can I not go and learn how to better myself at my CHOSEN instrument? Or even better, learn a new one!
I think it's gotten to the point now where it doesn't matter how good you are, society will always just follow the preference of those in charge.
College kid: breathes
Mike: Kill me
He protect
He attack
But most importantly, he tells pop heads to get smacked
The fact that they all consider this good music........ god help us all
Mike is the best at criticising people with bad music taste. I love it!!
Thanks for speaking for us
Mike is 100% my thoughts when I’m unfortunate to hear anything on the radio.
I agree
ana iglesias because the "popular" music is so trashy it has caused me to turn to country and rock music which isn't terrible because it let's me branch out in my musical tastes.
Too true! >~
@@natevanslyke990 nothing more trashy than celine dion
Sense Of Doubt - Panorama THE WHOLE TOP 10 OF 2018 IS TRASHIER THAN MY QUEEN CENLINE!
Learning guitar by myself totally changed my music view.Turn me a Billboard listener into a Jazz and Progressive fans. That totally changed my life.
As a high school student. My music library consists of Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Architects, Pink Floyd, Rush, Genesis, Yes, Accept etc
you need to add avenged sevenfold dude
Agarthan Reaper I forgot about that. I love Avenged Sevenfold. I think they are severely underrated and the guys there have that musical talent that the gatekeepers say they don’t.
The industry wants to make relatable music and yet there are still people who feel alienated by the industry. GREAT FUCKING JOB!
you always say the things i want people to hear about popular music. too bad most of their brains have been damaged by it and they just say "you are a hater"
Its not music its Hollywood. You don't need talent any more thirty years playing guitar and all I had to do was fart in a can...bless the world
"And for the record, it's not my mom's basement. It's my grandma's " 😂 GOTTA LOVE MIKE
Rock on!
Holy shit I just realized Mike is kind of like that 2011-12 CM Punk
Haha you crack me up and I couldn't agree with you more. I am happy I found your channel. Theses things need to be said out loud!
my favorite thing about cardi b songs is when the song ends and she stops singing
😄
Hoping the mob comes for that fecal sculpture.
@@BecomeTheKnight ok, but still, is it possible that we are now the elders, and pop is the metal?
I see the connection you are making there, but I think back when rock was In it’s heyday, it was very revolutionary especially with the rise of electric bass and guitar and distortion, etc. So to a lot of people it was very strange because it was this completely new crazy thing and there was so much experimentation going around, so of course people were bound to resist because well, people just don’t like change. I think now the problem is people are just getting tired of hearing the same old crap over
and over again.
Help! I’m an 18 year old music major in college! I’m trapped in a hell hole of rap and pop music. Somebody fucking help!!!!!!
I fucking love this guy 😂 it’s nice to see someone else who gets so irritated by how fucking bad mainstream pop music is and how dumb the people who consume it are. 👍🏼
Thanks for sharing this Mike! As a college kid I just don't understand why everyone my age holds this music up on a pedestal
I get a lot of shit for being different in school and when I show them different music they always say "this is music?". It makes me want to slap them so hard in the face. Some people just don't like people making music with instruments then a machine making trap beats and ugly fucking synth leads.
i don't think making trap and edm stuff is a bad thing but it is if your talentless and over use it and not experiencing other things that can improve
