Going tomorrow night - Clive Barker is my favorite writer/artist - love Candyman - love that Tony Todd, Vanessa Williams and Virginia are in the film - I have trusted Jordan Peele this whole time - he said he kept Clive in the loop and that this was truly a spiritual continuation. I am so excited!
Just came from the movies. And had a $10 reward so popcorn was free. Yaay! I really enjoyed this film, and I love Jordan Peele's work. Interesting spin on a cult classic film. I give it 4 stars out of 5. Love the fact that the leads were black also love the fact Briana wrapped her hair at night. That's what we do. Gotta protect the hair. Glad you guys liked the movie. 🙂
Hey, guys. Can I suggest a slight format change (since you do spoiler reviews)? I suggest this because I love you both but I'm also scared of spoilers. My suggestion is to say at the very beginning whether you liked the movie or not (just a thumbs up or down from both of you). You do this a every once in awhile, just say something like "I really liked those movie... I did too." Otherwise I do tend to initially avoid watching your videos until after I see the movie (or until after I decide that I'm probably not going to see the movie), but there are also a lot of your videos that I can't watch because I do eventually want to see the movie at some point. What do you think? Cheers!
since watching the Horror Noire documentary a few years ago I’m very excited for new black horror so I’m excited for this movie whether good or bad.. I hope you guys review the Horror Noire series that’s coming out of the documentary in October!!
Never been so excited to see 23 minute video! I'm so glad you guys covered this movie and that you liked it. I've been looking forward to it for like a year I think, and it sounds like it's going to live up to expectations 💛🐝
I loved that they connected baby Anthony into this story. However, that was it for me. Great acting & directing, but the story lost me. I really didn’t understand the point of adding in another “Candyman” story. I get the social commentary and the anger of unjust killings. Yet, when I watched the original Candyman, I felt his rage was not only about his unjust killing but also the fact that his murder/story was forgotten for some time. It is one thing to cruelly kill me. It is another thing when no one pays for my murder, & then I am easily forgotten because of my killer. Candyman was killed and then discarded, all because he was black. Candyman wanted to be remembered. He wanted his pain to echo off of people telling his story. He wanted to be feared. His strength was in his revenge, in the cruelty of his murder; his strength was within the bee stings and the hook. He fed off of being the ultimate urban legend. I feel like the original Candyman wouldn’t want to share his story with anybody else’s pain. His pain was enough! I did like that they made Anthony an artist, similar to the original Candyman’s occupation before he was murdered. Nice touch there. I miss the Sweet to the Sweets graffiti, and the walls within walls feel of the high-rise projects. I understand the low rises are all that’s left, but the high rises were the perfect backdrop of this story. A place full of pain and violence built on Candyman’s ashes/death site, was just perfect! I miss the storytelling that was so haunting in the original film. Candyman is storytelling within a story. Even though I liked the puppets; nothing beats the conversation with the janitor lady telling the murder of Ruthie Jean, & the young boy telling the story of a young boy’s murder in the bathroom. Real horror from excellent actors! That was missed. I also understand the hypocrisy of the legend of Candyman. With the social commentary, it can get lost that this is a horror film. Yes, he was unjustly killed by white ppl. Ppl then don’t understand why he kills black ppl and/or kids. However Candyman, like many villains who seek revenge, become consumed by revenge and rage. In this consumption is where they lose their righteousness and ultimately kill victims who are truly innocent. It makes the character/villain right & wrong at the same time. You understand their rage, yet you also understand they are the boogeyman and need to go! I am disappointed in the film but I can appreciate it at the same time
I said the exact same thing. I loved the visuals and the ways of telling the story in this movie but at the end of the day, the original Candyman seemed kinda tacked on like his pain is to be shared and passed on but that solves nothing. The pain of the others is similar in that they were treated unjustly but why linger as another Candyman when the original established that pain and anger has rage, yes but concentrated rage or retaliation. What point is there to bring others into your fight for revenge when there is no one to fight? I get it the police are the new enemy but it doesn't make sense, movie wise. I understand every point you said and agree absolutely. This movie is not a masterpiece like the original but not to be taken lightly either.
I'm so glad you asked why WIlliam suddenly became unhinged and wanted Anthony to become CM, because I didn't get it. A few other questions... Why did Anthony become...possessed I guess, in the church scene? How was Anthony even seeing "Sherman" instead of Tony Todd as Candyman? Sherman was William's childhood memory. There was something said about multiple CM's at the end, so is Sherman just one of the CM's but we're still acknowledging Tony Todd as CM since his face was at the end? I have so many more questions because this movie didn't add up for me, but maybe im comparing it too much to the old story lol.
So, I think this Candyman omits any sequels following the original Candyman.I think it was smart because it is taking the opportunity to build on the lore set up from the original Candyman, I like that they kept it to Cabrini-Green, I just wish they would have taken the time to weave each generations "candyman" into the story better and flesh out the lore more. We need more time with the characters uncovering the lore and seeing the character development through that uncovering.
Love the review, just wanted to point some stuff out. In the original candyman, candyman feed that baby his blood. At the end there was a new candy man. Everyone from Cabrini-green went to her funeral and threw in a hook
I just saw this about an hr ago and I do have to say I loved the movie and agree with you guys on alot of your points. Visually and story wise, this movie delivers but the overall movie hits a bump with the reason why there has to be another. Candyman is created from fear and has pain and tragedy tied to it but why continue the pain that's been done to you by having it be shared with others? The legacy of Candyman continues but why? Also needed alittle more of the other 2 Candymen as well. I remember just hearing their names and then seeing the end credits deal which kinda cheapens their story but maybe that's all for the sequel which this movie kicks off at the end .Great review, well said and just great vibe overall. That's a sub right there.👌
In my opinion it just wasn’t scary enough compared to the original. It was trying too hard to be “woke” as much as I hate that term. It leaned heavy into the racial aspect of the story too blatantly where as the original did it in a more vague way. Seems these days everything needs to be spelled out for us and thats the problem with some movies today. This nee candyman wasn’t nearly as bloody either. Lots of missed opportunities. The movie ended just as it was getting started. Hopefully they will do a part 2
Excellent review I enjoyed The time and attention you guys pay to the details and nuances that you bring out when you retell these movies. I’m on the fence whether I’ll watch this or not the first one scared the crap out of me when I was a teenager so I’m not sure if I will watch this but I appreciate you guys
As in working for him, by keeping his name out there yes. The backstory with the kid was in the book, he was the toddler that was eventually sacrificed. When they adapted the book they made two characters out of the toddler and Anthony and Jake.
Great review guys 👍 I somewhat expected to be exactly how it ended, once I saw the Vanessa Williams character in the trailer I expected someone taking on candy torch or bringing him back.
The social commentary was way too heavy handed, it does a disservice in my opinion, what made the old candy man so good was it was a horror movie first and the social commentary was weaved into the atmosphere, in this movie the social commentary was the plot with hints of a horror movie.

I was wondering the same, the movie felt like there were a few scenes missing. Overall i really enjoyed the movie i took my 11 yr old with me and she thought it was gon be really scary but we both left saying it was really good
As someone who only just saw all the Candyman movies recently, this one was personally my favorite (though I like the original as well). The visual aesthetic - from the shadow puppets to the mirror sequences - was so well done, and it was really eerie. The acting was great all around, and Nia DaCosta's direction was fantastic. I do think it needed an extra 10 minutes just to flesh out a couple of things, but otherwise I really liked it. Great review!!
Thx guys, I was looking forward to this, the original one was (as I can remember) a scary one I loved... HONESTLY reboots or renewals or remakes... it always scares me. OK, I'm curious to see it... By the way, greaaatttt sweater. Greetzz from Belgium
Absolutely great conversation! I kind of love how they depicted the pretention that is often present in the art (and fashion) world. Very astute observations about the role of black women in this movie. (Thank you for commenting on my video, BTW. When I tried to respond it disappeared. UA-cam shenanigans have been happening lately.)
Ohhhh I'm SOOO mad right now! I can't see this movie yet and I'm DYING to hear your review. Ok ok ok... Nick/Joseph. Just tell me if you liked the movie or not. That should hold me over... yeah that should do 😁
I really liked the original Candyman. I thought this Candyman, was really good and it was beautifully shot movie. It is one of the few movies that I wish could be longer, to developed the characters and the story even more.
I mean the biggest thing I could gather is its almost like Emmett Till.. And tales of the hood 2 and American gods where they explain that part of strange fruit and pain and racism.. And scarafice of carrying the burden of just misery and hurt and senselessness. Except in candy man it turns it on its head to use someone to avenge or make this lasting horror of people doing wrong but turns it and aims it at everyone.
First time watching you guys and I will definitely be watching more 👏 you compliment each other really nicely. And well noted on yaya’s character being excited that they said his name on the news, similar to candy man. I never picked up on that 👀
I'm seeing some bits some us in this and get out lol. Yayyyyyyy another Jordan peele movie even if he's not directing this. It all looks and sounds spectacular. Him seeing candyman in mirror mirroring him like he's his doppelganger lol like in us lol. Brings back theories of us lol where we trying to explain where the doppelganger coming from lol
Maybe he figured or knew like his mom that candyman has plans for him and him coming back obvious means that he's going to be new candyman. He could have known this was the baby in the story lol.
I just finished watching the new candyman. And spoiler alert if you've seen the trailer for the new candyman then you pretty much have seen the new candyman.
Would you propose Candyman is an anti-hero in this or previous film? I remember in viewing the first film, I was terrified of the villain *until* I learned his origin, then (shamefully), I forgave all once the brutality of his murder was revealed. I walked away back then wondering, why did Candyman kill the innocent ( well sort of innocent 🤔). I LOVED THE PUPPETS used for the historical exposition.
Just got out. The whole audience stayed through the end credits in complete silence. The art direction and performances were stellar. 91 mins is a bit swift, but overall, Nia did a really good job.
I liked it not as good as original but it's a sequel and reboot which is cool they should do stuff like that more I liked him as Anthony hell be good in the new matrix movie.
I like the ideas in this movie, but they were executed sloppily and lazily. I'm always down for a Candyman movie so I don't regret having watched it, but I was disappointed.
He might be seeing a parallel between him and Helen. Plus history usually this happens so if ut didn't happen to him then that'd be a first lol. He did get out like the movie lol but he came back he didn't know lol. This reminds me of odeniuous I think that's how you spell it where king and queen have baby. There's a prophecy saying the baby will grow up kill his dad and marry his mom so they see ent the baby away. Decades later the baby grows up found out where he came from so he goes back to see if he can find his parents or people who knew them. Came across someone on road they fought he killed him cause that's what they did back then. Turned out he was the king so he went to the queen to apologize and stuff. They ended up getting married after falling in love. Woman at beginning pops up and says the prophecy gas been fulfilled and clued then on everything. I think the mom killed herself or something and the son stabbed his eyes out. Messed up story. But it reminds me of this alittle bit like the story structure some beats lol. Yuck I seen that in trailer or clip him picking in mirror lol. Yuck lol. Anthony got bit by bee turns into candyman like Peter got bit by spider and became spiderman lol.
I love that you mentioned Teyonah’s character wearing a headwrap. It irks my soul when I see Black women in movies just going to bed with their head uncovered. I recently watched Spacejam 2, with my little cousins 🙃. I appreciated LeBron putting on a durag as he prepared to go to bed, but then was immediately put-off bc his wife just hopped into bed without a scarf/bonnet, 🤦🏾♀️
@@rosemaryfarell5264 When we go to bed we wrap our hair in a scarf or bonnet. This keeps our hair in place, edges laid, and moisture locked in while we sleep so that our hair is easily managed in the morning. It also helps styles like braids and twists looking fresh and tight longer.
The shadow puppetry is reminiscent of the work of Kara Walker who tells stories about the history of racism through shadow puppets.
It reminded me of Babadook. I loved it
The fact that Vanessa Williams hasn't aged is the scariest thing

I wonder if Brianna’s father was also being haunted by Candyman or was being summoned as the next Candyman and that’s why he killed himself?
I was wondering the same, the movie felt like there were a few scenes missing. Overall i really enjoyed the movie i took my 11 yr old with me and she thought it was gon be really scary but we both left saying it was really good
How did you guys see the movie so early
Nick was invited to review it.

Great review and that’s a fly hoody 💯
Absolutely great conversation! I kind of love how they depicted the pretention that is often present in the art (and fashion) world.
Very astute observations about the role of black women in this movie. (Thank you for commenting on my video, BTW. When I tried to respond it disappeared. UA-cam shenanigans have been happening lately.)
Ohhhh I'm SOOO mad right now! I can't see this movie yet and I'm DYING to hear your review.
Ok ok ok... Nick/Joseph. Just tell me if you liked the movie or not. That should hold me over... yeah that should do 😁
We both gave it 3.5/5.
@@fishjellyfilmreviews thank you! That's good enough for me to see it this weekend!
I thought it was ok.not that deep...no Oscar nominations I bet 😲💯😉 your review was more exciting than the movie lol 😆😆
The first movie was a warning for folks who exploits they historical trauma. Helen died due to attempting to in her own way exploits black pain.
Yep, I see that film today and I look at Helen as a villain. She was so bold to be a visitor trying to rearrange someone's furniture.
@@seventhkeyomegasghost8233 exactly ❤️
Instead of Candyman being something of black pain, William made Candyman vengeance instead... it was a lot going and it ended to fast for me..
It was definitely vengeance on William’s part. Did he know that Anthony was the baby when he first met him or? 🤔
@@mesalouis8976 I think he knew when he first met him in the alley and he told him his name
Basically a heavy handed mess
Too many ideas and not that it didn't have time to flesh out it just wouldn't
Just so bad
I really liked the original Candyman. I thought this Candyman, was really good and it was beautifully shot movie. It is one of the few movies that I wish could be longer, to developed the characters and the story even more.
Did anyone summon Helen Lyle's name 5 times?
I mean the biggest thing I could gather is its almost like Emmett Till.. And tales of the hood 2 and American gods where they explain that part of strange fruit and pain and racism.. And scarafice of carrying the burden of just misery and hurt and senselessness. Except in candy man it turns it on its head to use someone to avenge or make this lasting horror of people doing wrong but turns it and aims it at everyone.
If Candyman is about rectifying the injustice of white hatred why did he also kill black people/children? That’s the part I don’t get….
First time watching you guys and I will definitely be watching more 👏 you compliment each other really nicely.
And well noted on yaya’s character being excited that they said his name on the news, similar to candy man. I never picked up on that 👀
🙏🏽
“Sharack”
Never seen the original one of Candyman
The scariest movie ever!!!still scary now as when I was a kid..
Question - what makes a movie a 5 for you two?
I'm seeing some bits some us in this and get out lol. Yayyyyyyy another Jordan peele movie even if he's not directing this. It all looks and sounds spectacular. Him seeing candyman in mirror mirroring him like he's his doppelganger lol like in us lol. Brings back theories of us lol where we trying to explain where the doppelganger coming from lol
Thank god yall are so beautiful 😍
We do make him our own is the creepy part . Because we called him.
Is Virginia Madsen snd Tony Todd in the movie?
If they aren't I'll be Pissed
I remember easing thier character names in the cast list
Virginia isn't. Tony is briefly
Yes they’re both in the film but Virgina Madsen only did voice overs.
He mirrored his pain to Helen because she wanted to use it
Maybe he figured or knew like his mom that candyman has plans for him and him coming back obvious means that he's going to be new candyman.
I loved it!
Now, I am hyped to watch it. Ty, dear friends! This review was right to my cinephile “coração”. #osm💯
The actor who plays Anthony always looks dehydrated and needs an esthetician for his skin.
And I oop
That actor is fine af
So does anthony become candyman
Yes in the end. Basically candy man uses his body as a vessel in the end after he dies
@Mario Pons I still answered his question.. I said after he died ..
@Mario Pons yes you can lol his body is just a vessel.
Yes he does
He might be seeing a parallel between him and Helen.
Oedipus Rex?
She is suffering by being exploited while yaya transforms.
My cat is scared shitless by Candyman 🤣
This sounds like... a lot
I finished watching it not too long ago and it was pretty good
This movie is getting a lot of hate right now !
Im white plz explain the meaning ofthe headscarf.
