Diane was such a powerful, mesmerizing presence on Guiding Light, due in large part to the brilliant performances of Sofia Landon Geier. Diane was the only woman in Springfield who could go toe-to-toe with both Alan Spaulding and Roger Thorpe Also, Diane was a wonderful foil for the heroines of the show at the time, such as Hope, Amanda, Eve, Jackie, and Elizabeth. I would have enjoyed watching Diane be pitted against Reva Shayne and Alexandra Spaulding!
Wow! Reva & Diane pitted against one another? That would've been something else! I think the Diane/Alexandra friction would've given us lots more material, though. Imagine the possibilities!
Too many wonderful characters would be written off in the early 1980s, including Amanda, Hope, Rita, Jackie (I prefer Cindy Pickett in the role), Morgan (I prefer Kristen Vigard in the role), Jennifer, Ben, Justin, and Sara.
Diana Ballard, was a bitch, and a schemer, but she has a long way, too go, before she could fill the shoes of Alexis Carrington Colby. Of, course, she was accumulating Spaulding Enterprises, at this time, before she was killed off, she only became the third largest stockholder, in the company. Could she have gained majority control of Spaulding Enterprises? Who knows!
Killing Diane was a rare error from Doug Marland. Especially since it all ended up with him being fired and his entire planned story being aborted. Nobody won. 🥺
Apparently, Vigard had a look at her script for once the night before and actually somewhat learned her lines. From what I read, that issue was huge in getting her fired. Vigard admitted herself, she was really young during this time and was not disciplined. When I see these episodes, it is quite obvious she flubs around trying to compensate for keeping the scene together. John Wesley Shipp really became exasperated with her as I imagine many others in the cast did as well.
Morgan's acting in this scene with Nola is excellent !
1976mcil Both she and Lisa Brown are superb actresses. They had that old Hollywood style.

Cast List She was amazing. It's so frustrating when they kill off great characters like hers. It leaves a real indelible void.

@@castlist44i58I think Rita choose to leave the show .. The show just got Jane Elliot from General hospital !!
Diane Ballard was the Alexis Carrington of her day...
+1976mcil Yes, and without the camp!
1976mcil I know. I love Diane B. Like I always say, if you're going to play a real bitch, play a good one. Sofia Landon played one of the greatest.

Too bad killer off, would have loved to have seen her against alex!

so true. a great storyline would have been diane trying to take over spaulding from alan or at least being equal to him in the company.
He should have placed Diane in a coma after the attack and let Diane live as Carrie went through her crap.
Dayuuummm! Morgan brought the hammer down. Kristen Vigard is another one of GL's great actresses. Just natural and flawless.
Agreed.....Never understood the recast
RIP VAN Dorn
was doug marland fired or he quit?
I think quit due to bad treatment of his friend Jane Elliot, aka Carrie.
