  • parkrun organises free, weekly, timed five kilometre events in parks across the world. Beginning as a time trial back in 2004 with just thirteen people, before the COVID-19 pandemic it was attracting around 400,000 people every weekend across 22 countries worldwide.
parkrun suspended events in March 2020, but despite the re-launch of over a quarter of events across the world, many of us are still eagerly awaiting the return of our local parkrun events. In this seminar we will explore what impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on parkrun participants, what parkrunners think about the return of parkrun, and seek some practical advice for how to make a parkrun comeback.
    Speakers for this event include:
Mike Graney, parkrun’s Head of Analysis, helps them understand parkrunners using millions of pieces of information about their runs, walks, volunteering and numerous surveys about their behaviour. In this seminar, Mike will let us in on his insight into the thoughts and feelings of parkrun participants in the UK about parkrun’s return.
Steve Haake is the Chair of the parkrun Research Board, tasked with coordinating the large amounts of research now being done on parkrunners around the world. He will talk to us about how the health and wellbeing of UK parkrunners changed during the COVID-19 pandemic and we’ll explore the role that a parkrun comeback could play in boosting health and happiness.
Rebecca Robinson is a consultant in sport and exercise medicine. Through working with patients during and after Covid, she has subsequently continued a Long-Covid clinic at CHHP and a research clinic with AWRC aimed at supporting patients experiencing post-Covid syndrome. Rebecca will provide some practical guidance for anyone planning on making a parkrun comeback.
