Mixed Media Art. Mixed Media Butterflies and Dragonflies. Mixed Media Techniques.

She flew out from the shadows and into the light.
Here I create a wonderful mixed media piece using Shawn Petite’s stencils which I combine with some of my own scrap papers, modelling paste to a lovely grungy background. I distressed the background of my 12x16" canvas by adding wedgewood blue, titanium white, raw umber, buff titanium and peach pink with my fingers and my brayer. I then added raw umber to the edges to create a frame to work in.
I then began to add more texture and some colour by adding velvet purple and white. I dabbed a mixture of titanium white and velvet purple through Shawn Petite's Vintage Pattern 4 stencil. I positioned Shawn's Arch 1 Round Large stencil onto my canvas and then added modelling paste to create a 3d effect archway. I added more modelling paste to the vintage pattern 4 stencil to lift the pattern from the background and then once the modelling paste was thoroughly dry I added a watery mixture of phthalo turquoise and velvet purple to the inside of the archway before adding a mix of buff titanium, white titanium and warm grey to the background.
I then used Shawn’s Let it Fly 2 stencil as a template to draw and cut out some dragonfly and butterfly shapes from my pile of scrap patterned papers. This gave my canvas time to dry and I then added more of the white, buff, and grey mix. I added a piece of cotton lace edging to the bottom of my canvas and then added a few drops of Cool Peri and Raspberry alcohol inks mixed with water to add a splash of colour and interest. I allowed the canvas time to dry thoroughly and then positioned and using Matt medium I stuck down my dragonfly and butterfly cutouts. I added definition to the edges of the dragonflies, butterflies and archway with a stabilo 8046 pencil and then with a little bit of water I created shadows and shading.
I added the words, ‘She flew out from the shadows and into the light’, and then finally I added some warm grey around the edge of the archway to lift it and then my canvas was finished. I really hope that you enjoyed watching my process and that you will have a go at creating your own piece!
