The offical reason was he was a loner and didn’t like people and since 16’s love of nature was increased in the anime that’s why everyone believed the headcanon. Too be honest that job as ranger did 17 pretty good in that tournament against other universe’s best fighters. After all, he lasted the longest. And because of that, he wished for all the universes Zeno destroyed to be restored with the best intentions.
