I just rented the Z6 and 24-70 2.8 for a week to decide. I shot a family event this weekend and really enjoyed it. I was able to configure the 3rd ring for ISO during my shoot. Not sure if you were referencing video as I haven't done any video on the Z6 yet. I do have to say after a week, my better half and I decided our gift to ourselves was to purchase a Z6. So it's currently sitting under the Christmas tree waiting to be opened. :)

Midrange lenses? That lens you have in your hand is universally regarded as the very best 24-70 f/2.8 you can buy right now. The 50S and 85S have been reviewed and compared to Zeiss Otus level.
I was referring to all of the other lenses except the f/2.8. All of the prime f/1.8 lenses, which are good lenses but not the best Nikon will eventually offer.

The Nikon S line of lenses represent their best lenses: "At the top of the ever-expanding Nikkor Z lens lineup, S-Line lenses push Nikon’s tradition of optical excellence and innovation to unprecedented new heights". There won't be a superior set of lenses to these, only lower grade ones that won't get the 'S' monker. Many people are confused that many of these S lenses are 'only' f/1.8. However, Nikon have put more glass into these new lenses, and upped the resolution and contrast across the frame. It is true that a few of the S lenses stand apart a little by having an extra control ring and an OLED display. The 24-70 f/2.8, and the upcoming 14-24 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.2 are (will be) made in Japan, and are very expensive, so I guess you might mean these ones.
So you're assuming the fastest lenses they will offer are these f/1.8 lenses with the exception of the 58mm f/0.95? That seems a little shirt sighted. I know that these f/1.8 lenses are great and best in class but that can't be what the expect to compare to the Sony GM lenses and the new Canon RF L series lenses. Maybe it is, but I sure hope not.
@@jeradcamera No, they have a 50mm f/1.2 on their lens roadmap for 2020, so I'm presuming we will also get a 35mm and 85mm f/1.2 as well, but that won't be until at least 2022.
I bought both the 50 & 85 f1.8 S lenses and I am blown away on how sharp they are. Compared the the Nikon G lenses at the same focal length and f-stop you have to go up to f2.8 or higher to get the same results compared to the S lenses at f1.8. I rented the sigma 105mm f1.4 and the Nikon 85 mm f1.4 and the new S lenses are just as sharp or better. I didn’t like how much they cost, but are worth it. And don’t get me wrong adapting f-mount lenses to the z6 you will get amazing photos. But the new s lenses are Nikon’s sharpest lenses yet, but I don’t see how much sharper the unreleased f1.2 lenses can be for the prices they will be offered to us. I know what I have now is all I will need to get the job done.
The feature that the camera remembers different settings for video and photo was something the D750 introduced (I believe). The entire youtube community was going nuts over it and called it a con. However, i have the D750 and let me tell you, that feature saves a tonne of time and effort when you are doing a run and gun hybrid shoot. And it enables me to shoot both photos and backup video at a wedding without any effort. I cannot imagine to live without it these days. Since then (when the youtube community termed it a ‘con’), however, I have been so disappointed in the youtube community for criticizing a genius feature without even trying it in a real world shoot. But I see you are the first person (that I came across) since 2014 who has actually acknowledged this feature (regardless that the camera is a z6 now and not the d750) I respect you mate.
Great review. I agree with alot of your comments. I adapt an older F mount Nikkor 70-200 f2.8, with pretty good success. It's sharp on the Z6, no issue there. I feel like an adapted 70-200 f2.8 is a tad slower than when on an F mount Nikon DLSR, when shooting action. That said, I'm still figuring out the best way to capture action with this camera, which means, I could be me, more than the lens. It can be done, I've achieved great results shooting action. Nikon mirrorless just works differently than Nikon DSLRs. The new Z mount 70-200 f2.8 will probably be a stellar lens, but $$$.
Kevin Mulhall For action photography I prefer a dslr. I still can’t figure out how to make the same action shots with the Z6. There is a sort of a delay on it when shooting in burst. Maybe I do a lot of things wrong🙂. But for all the rest I 100% prefer the Z cameras.
I love my Z 6. You forgot to mention the full touch menu system. The lack of that in the Sony a7 series is what disappointed me in Sony. For God sakes Sony makes smartphones. They should know touch pretty well and should be able to incorporate it into their Interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras.
That is a favorite feature of mine and something I'm mentioning in an upcoming comparison video I am currently editing. We should be able to fingerprint unlock our cameras too 🤣🤣🤣
Just wanted to point out that I little disagree about Z lenses being “middle quality”. Actually all of the Z primes do excel and beat almost all Nikon G series lenses (even some 1.4 ones) for sharpness! Even the “poor” 14-30 beats the legendary 14-24 2.8 in edge to edge overall quality. And this is Generation 1 Z lenses...
I should have worded what I said differently. I was not saying that these were bad lenses. They are fantastic lenses but they are not the best Nikon will release. They are the mid level lenses and yes they perform exceptionally well. I'm certain Nikon will eventually release an 85mm f/1.4 as compared to other manufactures an f/1.8 is not the fastest lens, it's the mid-range lens. I didn't say anything about the lenses lacking in performance. What I did say is that the Z line is not a full lineup yet but that didn't bother me too much because I switched to Sony mirrorless when it didn't have a full lineup.
Agree on that. I simply believe that this is one of the best 1st Generation lenses for such a new system like the Z mount (which will require years to be mastered, optically speaking, even to Nikon engineers) . And if the first generation is THAT good... well the future looks so bright here ;)

Ricardo T. Imo too, the Z lenses are really good. I sold my D750 and D850 just because of the size and weight difference with the Z series and there lenses. I don’t need a 1.4 lens just to be 0,0005 seconds faster. The 24-70 f4, 14-30 f4 and 85 1.8 are fantastic for me. The only lens a use with the adapter is the 70-200 f4.
Have you installed the new 3.0 firmware update? I tested the camera on BIF and the result is simply amazing! I now have a "new" Z6 shooting great action shots. The auto-focusing tracking is simple great! Just as good as the D5 and D500. It is worth every penny. I now want to buy a CF-express so I can test how many shoots the camera is able to do in one burst on 12FPS. The upgrade really made me happy with Nikon again.
When you were referring to all the great ergonomics of the buttons on the back of the camera, it would have been nice to actually see them as you were touching them.
I’m only a keen amateur but Nikon’s ergonomics are the main reason I chose this brand, and adding that to a fabulous choice of lenses seemed to be the obvious choice. Since then my wife has joined me on my journey and chose a Z6 for ease of use and weight, not to mention ergonomics. She absolutely loves for z camera and although she only has the f4 24-70 kit and 50mm prime native lenses she can still use my glass with the FTZ. Couldn’t be happier with our choices.
I've tried the Sony a9 and a7iii. Their autofocus abilities are significantly better than my z6. Specifically, the subject tracking, evf/screen lag, and the reliability of the eye/face detection. If Nikon can sort that out via firmware update or in the next body, i think they'll have the best system.
Hey, just came across your channel. I’m considering the new Z5, because i don’t care about video features and performance, and prefer SD cards over XQD cards. Plus its cheaper. But, given the 24-70 f4 isn’t a kit option, what lens would you recommend going with? I am more of a landscape shooter, so edge sharpness matters more to me than say low light for events or wedding shooting. Is the 24-70 f2.8 noticeably sharper than the f4?

Last week I went to a Sony center to try out the A7III. The staff was understanding and helpfull but the camera didn't feel right in my hands. I'm using a d750 so the grip was a first problem and then changing the shutter speed... :) I really liked changing the ISO and the autofocus but that's that. overall I don't understandget the hate Nikon gets
Hello! Thanks for the great insight first of all. So, I’m a total newbie and I bought my Nikon Z6 less than 2 weeks ago. I have a question. My firmware version is 1.00. I’ve checked on Nikon’s official web page and it says I need a card reader along with a card itself in order to install the latest 2.20 firmware update. Could you please confirm that there is indeed no other way to do that?
To update the firmware you need a card reader so that you can copy the firmware file onto your memory card and then put it into your camera. When you put it into your camera you will then need to go to the settings menu where you can upgrade the firmware.
Let’s face it, now that we have ProRes RAW over HMDI to the Ninja V it’s kinda like reviewing a Tesla w/o talking about the ability it can drive itself! That was the only reason I bought into the Nikon Filmmaker’s Kit and had to wait for almost a year to start using it! The legacy 58mm 2.8 and 135mm 1.8 are just fine with the FTZ adaptor... use them more that they two Z Zooms for my studio work.
Battery isn't that bad. Be sure to turn on airplane mode if you're not using the bluetooth/wifi option. Granted it's not as good as DSLR's using the same battery, but under constant shooting it's not bad at all.
Yeah I could try from the times I was messing with it. Went out over the weekend and this thing dropped quite a few bit especially since I was only out for 3 hours doing wildlife shots...
@@GamerRadar Gotcha, I'm getting good battery life - if you have your display to only the EVF it'll use more battery than having it on priority or automatic display switch. Always good to have a 2nd/3rd battery on hand in any case, you can get them cheap at B&H or amazon.
Akbar yeah I’m using my old D7100 batteries when the one that came with it dies, it’s another reason why I chose this camera over the Sony’s, nikons battery’s are a bit cheaper from what I saw.. I’ll try the EVF thing, I’m going to the city (I live in NY) next week to shoot.. I’ve noticed this drains when off too. Someone said something about a WiFi sync even when off. I see a notice but I’ll have to search for that. I feel like I just have to set the camera up properly, which I apparently did not lol. Still I keep recommending this thing to people. Even some of my Sony and canon friends are impressed.
iam a nikon shooter for the past 35 years from film cameras to digital dslr full frame and apsc and lots and lots of prime lens and zoom lenses, now iam thinking of buying Z6 and Z7 with s lenses, any suggestions, i would appreciate your frank opinion

Both Sigma and Tamron f-mount lenses can be used on the Z6 with the FTZ adapter. I use the Sigma 150-600mm and the Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2 and they both work great.
Hi and thanks for sharing your experience with the z6. I heard that you are heavily invested in e-mount lenses, have you tried the techart Adapter for e to z Mount with your lenses? I am interested if it is worth the Investment ?
I come from the Nikon D7xxx series, so the Z6 was a natural progression for me. It is an evolution in many ways. I'm not seeing anything from other brands that is as compelling.
I'd definately agree on the 'middle-of-the-ground' statement for the 24-70 f4. It makes really sharp edge to edge photos. But it has heavy bending on the edges which are internaly corrected and causes some wired stretchings. I am actually a bit disappionted by the lens, especially when you consider that it's supposed to cost 1000$. One thing that holds for it though is its minimal focus distance which is extremely low. I also own the NIkkor S 500 F1.8 and this lens is just straight up amazing. I got on the recent sale for under 400$ new. And there is nothing on the market in that price-range (or even twice as expensive) that can match it.
Sony has a more mature platform, far better lens selection given their lens mount is totally open, better battery life, dual card slots (which may not matter to you), more advanced focus tracking. Nikon feels better in hand, has a better evf, screen, slightly better video, and menu system, their lenses can be found at amazing discounts, and can be sharper at the edges, often with less focus breathing in video, although Sony offers great video specific lenses from Zeiss. I prefered Nikon, but you can't go wrong with either.
Sony doesn't have a better lens selection, people here just dismiss the fact that you can natively adapt Nikon's F-Mount lenses which includes Nikkor lenses and 3rd party lenses from Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and others. That's hundreds and hundreds of lenses right there, and many of them having AF and 3-axis IBIS supported.
I always was a Nikon girl. I owned a D90, D3s, D700, D750 and a Nikon z 6. After a one day experience with an other photographer I switched to Fuji. For my style to shoot it was a good change. I never got that sharp images out of nikon. I like to hear you all are fine with Nikon.
Ive had my Z6 for 11 months now. Mostly using with adapted F mount Nikon and Sigma lenses. Purchased the Z 50mm f1.8 and Z 35mm f1.8 two months ago as soon as they went on sale. This camera consistently exceeds my expectations, and these two Z lenses are otherworldly. I never fell in love with any of the DSLR's that Ive owned or used over the last couple decades. They always felt like clunky technology in my hands, and just too many compromises no matter who much you spent. I absolutely love my Z6. It is the perfect combination for my use. My regret is that Nikon didnt get into the APS-C/FF Mirrorless game sooner. Now its not a matter of putting out a comparable product to your competitor (Sony, since they are the biggest player in mirrorless by far) and letting the consumer decide. Youve got to bring products that are considerably better and at lower price points, because a) Sony's head start is huge and b) Sony has got virtually every influencer in their back pocket. Nikon cannot afford to keep losing money on DSLR's just to appease this tiny loud mouthed segment of the market that in truth isnt going to put their money where there mouth is come release time of that next DSLR or F lens. They need to stop production of all DSLR's and F lenses(except maybe the D850 for another year or so) and fully focus on churning out Z bodies and lenses. 1-2 bodies and 6-8 lenses a year minimum. 2020 will be a pivotal year for Nikon's future in the camera market. They must release 2 bodies this year, and one of those must be a true pro level body (two memory card slots, vertical grip, 60MP, improved IBIS, improved AF and so forth). They must release the 14-28 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8, and the 24-200 superzoom in 2020. Would be nice to see the 24-105, 100-400, and maybe the 105 macro. But, they must complete the holy trinity lineup, and they must have a FF superzoom in 2020. If they cannot achieve this in 2020, it will just be too hard in 2021 to gain ground.
Have long used the front buttons reprogrammed for front button AF (also have BBAF set - each with different focus point setup) and find them awesome from switching from single point to group for birds in flight. Glad to see that you found it as useful on the Z6. Haven't switched or purchased mirror less yet because I shoot sports and wildlife. Switching to the SONY A9 would mean trading in a lot of glass. And Jerad, at the end of your video you make several statements I can't agree with. I am a Nikon shooting and the Z6/Z7 are not for me yet because they do not provide a significant advantage for BIF/Wildlife shooting. For those married to the two card slot system for backup they would also not be the camera of choice. When Nikon fixes this (i.e. AF speed, FPS, two card slots for those that need it) then it may bring others over. I also would argue that the reasons you say you like the Nikon Z (ergos, menus) can't be said of the SONY. Menu system is not good and hasn't been improved by SONY. I agree that I love the menu system of Nikon. Canon isn't bad either. Nor is Olympus or for some Fujifilm. The color EVF on Nikon's Zs has to be way better than when you switched over to SONY from Canon and so would the battery life now. That said, the Z system also doesn't have a functional (with buttons) vertical grip. One advantage to mirror less you didn't mention is the ability to use focus peaking (was it better btw on Sony or Nikon or Canon?) and manual lenses. Last, I hear that the Z system sensor does not get as dirty as the SONYs. A friend of mine that shoots professional time lapse gave his SONYs back to SONY because he couldn't keep the sensors clean. The review is fine, but.... You say you don't have fast lenses available? Don't have pro lenses available? What the heck is a pro lens? Man you are holding one of the best lenses on earth, this 24-70 f/2.8! And all the other 1.8 primes, plus the 70-200mm f/2.8... These are real fast glass, first class! I really don't get this craziness about 1.4, 1.2, 1.0, 0.95 lenses! The bokeh thing??? The bokeh thing is so misplaced nowadays... People go to the Grand Canion, to London, to Rio de Janeiro, to the Sahara Desert just to blow away all the background! It makes no difference at all where you are... We can take pictures in our bathroom and nobody will know with everything blown away with excessive bokeh! The same thing with portraits... People buy extremely sharp lenses, cameras with 45, 60, 100 megapixels just to go to photoshop and blow away all the details on the skin, making the models look like mummies!

They are mid line as there will be higher end lenses still to come like the 24-70mm f/2.8. I never said the lenses don't perform well. I just wouldn't switch until they have an 85mm f/1.4.
@@jeradcamera Fair enough, but I think it's important to note that the f1.8 primes in some cases are being favourably compared to Zeiss: definitely not your average "mid line" lenses!
My nikon Z6 is impossible to use. She does not focus well in single focus mode. Only focuses well on the automatic, and to make it worse is giving an error that only resolves if you remove the battery. Not a casual mistake, it happens at least 3 times per event, sometimes even more. Her wifi to upload photos is ridiculously slow. And the face and eye detector only works on close portraits and in perfect light conditions.
What do you mean there's not enough lenses for that camera? didn't Nikon release that camera with a Nikon adapter so you could use older Nikon lenses natively with that camera? For God's sakes man, take advantage of what Nikon has created for you and pick up some f-mount lenses!!
Adapter puts extra weight. Yes it is solution but not all lenses works perfect with z system, specially d series lenses. Also some third party lenses dont work well. Nikon people alrady have awesome beast dslr camera so there is some hesisation like should i wait to switch or should i get in to risk.
Hundreds, thousands? Bought into the Z6 Filmmaker’s Kit with the promise that Nikon and Atomos would deliver the “game changing” ProRes RAW (August 2019) and now... NOTHING! Not a word. (Word is that - since Sony supplies the Video Chip - Sony our the kabash on that and we were gyped. As a life long Nikon/Nikkor shooter... I have never felt more ripped-off and betrayed by a company.
Atomos are saying that it's ready and Nikon is testing the system. Nikon is not the company that uses lots of PR. They prefer to just make good cameras. I think that you don't want to be a beta tester for free.
That would be great... but say I’m from “Kansas” ie I’ll believe it when I see it - on my recorder - since I have seen no official announcement (and it would be difficult to make an announcement w/official word from Sony on what deal was cut for their video chip)
@@TheGeoDaddy That option is already available for the new Sigma L mount camera. And it uses the same chip. Basically they all use the same great 24 MP chip. Only Canon nowadays make their own FF sensors. And as far as I know Sony sensor division have it's own autonomy (sort of). I also look forward to that upgrade cause what I've seen from Sigma is WOW. I bet you can make a movie with that tech.
We are talking about being able to by-pass the camera’s SSD and write LOG to the Atomos recorder over HDMI, right? The only thing you can - now - is write LOG (Nikon N-Log) but that’s is not compressed... so we are talking about file sizes 4/5 times the size of ProRes RAW that 4/5 times the amount of storage. That is more expensive than renting a camera system that already shoots in the ProRes RAW format (if you tightly manage your shooting)
@@TheGeoDaddy Yes, about writing ProRes RAW directly to Atomos recorder. I've heard the interview of Atomos representative where he said that it's basically ready but Nikon is super scrupulously testing it and that's why it's not available yet. I believe that Nikon thinks that they MUST got it right cause they consider small crew filmmakers to be one of their main customers (they made a statement on that point, we live in youtube times). All lenses of Z mount are made with video in mind (almost non existent focus breathing and silent motors).
-Not at all ergonomic -vertical shooting very uncomfortable even with battery grip -switch between AFC and AFS inconvenient -inability to use the infrared reticle of the flash ( really bad thing ) -quite short battery life -very unbalanced used with f-mouth optics and flash SB series -very dirty noise at high ISO ( compared to d850 and d5) I come from a Nikon D5 and I shooting mainly in low light situations such as movie theater clubs and I can say that in these situations the z6 really sucks I bought it recently and I hope to change my opinion but I'm almost afraid to work with this camera
@@TaipeiGeek what is the sense of praising the silent shooting if you can't focus in the dark with low light? ok for club and theaters but church ceremonies ... birthday parties are extreme environments? I have the nikon d750 and it is far ahead in usability! try a Z6/7 +adapter+24-70Vr+sb900 and let me know if is a good equipment in that situation...you will miss the focus 60% of the time garanteed because there is nothing to attack the focus also that horrible green light that is hindered by thick lenses

I just got a Z6 with the adapter. I have F mount lenses that work great with the Z6 except for the older “D” ones that don’t AF. Loving it so far.

And it enables me to shoot both photos and backup video at a wedding without any effort. I cannot imagine to live without it these days. Since then (when the youtube community termed it a ‘con’), however, I have been so disappointed in the youtube community for criticizing a genius feature without even trying it in a real world shoot. But I see you are the first person (that I came across) since 2014 who has actually acknowledged this feature (regardless that the camera is a z6 now and not the d750) I respect you mate.

Great review. I agree with alot of your comments. I adapt an older F mount Nikkor 70-200 f2.8, with pretty good success. It's sharp on the Z6, no issue there. I feel like an adapted 70-200 f2.8 is a tad slower than when on an F mount Nikon DLSR, when shooting action. That said, I'm still figuring out the best way to capture action with this camera, which means, I could be me, more than the lens. It can be done, I've achieved great results shooting action. Nikon mirrorless just works differently than Nikon DSLRs. The new Z mount 70-200 f2.8 will probably be a stellar lens, but $$$.
Kevin Mulhall For action photography I prefer a dslr. I still can’t figure out how to make the same action shots with the Z6. There is a sort of a delay on it when shooting in burst. Maybe I do a lot of things wrong🙂. But for all the rest I 100% prefer the Z cameras.
I love my Z 6. You forgot to mention the full touch menu system. The lack of that in the Sony a7 series is what disappointed me in Sony. For God sakes Sony makes smartphones. They should know touch pretty well and should be able to incorporate it into their Interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras.
That is a favorite feature of mine and something I'm mentioning in an upcoming comparison video I am currently editing. We should be able to fingerprint unlock our cameras too 🤣🤣🤣

Just wanted to point out that I little disagree about Z lenses being “middle quality”. Actually all of the Z primes do excel and beat almost all Nikon G series lenses (even some 1.4 ones) for sharpness! Even the “poor” 14-30 beats the legendary 14-24 2.8 in edge to edge overall quality. And this is Generation 1 Z lenses...
I should have worded what I said differently. I was not saying that these were bad lenses. They are fantastic lenses but they are not the best Nikon will release. They are the mid level lenses and yes they perform exceptionally well. I'm certain Nikon will eventually release an 85mm f/1.4 as compared to other manufactures an f/1.8 is not the fastest lens, it's the mid-range lens. I didn't say anything about the lenses lacking in performance. What I did say is that the Z line is not a full lineup yet but that didn't bother me too much because I switched to Sony mirrorless when it didn't have a full lineup.
Agree on that. I simply believe that this is one of the best 1st Generation lenses for such a new system like the Z mount (which will require years to be mastered, optically speaking, even to Nikon engineers) . And if the first generation is THAT good... well the future looks so bright here ;)

Ricardo T. Imo too, the Z lenses are really good. I sold my D750 and D850 just because of the size and weight difference with the Z series and there lenses. I don’t need a 1.4 lens just to be 0,0005 seconds faster. The 24-70 f4, 14-30 f4 and 85 1.8 are fantastic for me. The only lens a use with the adapter is the 70-200 f4.
Have you installed the new 3.0 firmware update? I tested the camera on BIF and the result is simply amazing! I now have a "new" Z6 shooting great action shots. The auto-focusing tracking is simple great! Just as good as the D5 and D500. It is worth every penny.
I now want to buy a CF-express so I can test how many shoots the camera is able to do in one burst on 12FPS. The upgrade really made me happy with Nikon again.
When you were referring to all the great ergonomics of the buttons on the back of the camera, it would have been nice to actually see them as you were touching them.
I’m only a keen amateur but Nikon’s ergonomics are the main reason I chose this brand, and adding that to a fabulous choice of lenses seemed to be the obvious choice. Since then my wife has joined me on my journey and chose a Z6 for ease of use and weight, not to mention ergonomics. She absolutely loves for z camera and although she only has the f4 24-70 kit and 50mm prime native lenses she can still use my glass with the FTZ. Couldn’t be happier with our choices.
I highly recommend the new 85mn f1.8S lens. Great lens

I've tried the Sony a9 and a7iii. Their autofocus abilities are significantly better than my z6. Specifically, the subject tracking, evf/screen lag, and the reliability of the eye/face detection. If Nikon can sort that out via firmware update or in the next body, i think they'll have the best system.

You can set with f6/menue the buttons to toggle so you have not to hold down the button e.g. for change the ISO or AF
Hey, just came across your channel. I’m considering the new Z5, because i don’t care about video features and performance, and prefer SD cards over XQD cards. Plus its cheaper. But, given the 24-70 f4 isn’t a kit option, what lens would you recommend going with? I am more of a landscape shooter, so edge sharpness matters more to me than say low light for events or wedding shooting. Is the 24-70 f2.8 noticeably sharper than the f4?

Not sure if you mentioned it , but you can set some buttons such as the ISO to be one touch and adjust Vs having to hold it down to make adjustments .

I have heard that focus peaking on Nikon is more reliable than on Sony. Have you experimented with this?
I haven't used Sony, so can't make a comparison, but I have used focus peaking on my Z6 and find it to be very accurate.
Last week I went to a Sony center to try out the A7III. The staff was understanding and helpfull but the camera didn't feel right in my hands. I'm using a d750 so the grip was a first problem and then changing the shutter speed... :) I really liked changing the ISO and the autofocus but that's that. overall I don't understandget the hate Nikon gets
Hello! Thanks for the great insight first of all. So, I’m a total newbie and I bought my Nikon Z6 less than 2 weeks ago. I have a question. My firmware version is 1.00. I’ve checked on Nikon’s official web page and it says I need a card reader along with a card itself in order to install the latest 2.20 firmware update. Could you please confirm that there is indeed no other way to do that?
To update the firmware you need a card reader so that you can copy the firmware file onto your memory card and then put it into your camera. When you put it into your camera you will then need to go to the settings menu where you can upgrade the firmware.

Let’s face it, now that we have ProRes RAW over HMDI to the Ninja V it’s kinda like reviewing a Tesla w/o talking about the ability it can drive itself! That was the only reason I bought into the Nikon Filmmaker’s Kit and had to wait for almost a year to start using it!
The legacy 58mm 2.8 and 135mm 1.8 are just fine with the FTZ adaptor... use them more that they two Z Zooms for my studio work.
Totally worth , the photographies are incredibles and fill all the screen with good quality.....

Battery isn't that bad. Be sure to turn on airplane mode if you're not using the bluetooth/wifi option. Granted it's not as good as DSLR's using the same battery, but under constant shooting it's not bad at all.

Yeah I could try from the times I was messing with it. Went out over the weekend and this thing dropped quite a few bit especially since I was only out for 3 hours doing wildlife shots...
@@GamerRadar Gotcha, I'm getting good battery life - if you have your display to only the EVF it'll use more battery than having it on priority or automatic display switch. Always good to have a 2nd/3rd battery on hand in any case, you can get them cheap at B&H or amazon.
Akbar yeah I’m using my old D7100 batteries when the one that came with it dies, it’s another reason why I chose this camera over the Sony’s, nikons battery’s are a bit cheaper from what I saw..

Both Sigma and Tamron f-mount lenses can be used on the Z6 with the FTZ adapter. I use the Sigma 150-600mm and the Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2 and they both work great.

I'd definately agree on the 'middle-of-the-ground' statement for the 24-70 f4. It makes really sharp edge to edge photos. But it has heavy bending on the edges which are internaly corrected and causes some wired stretchings. I am actually a bit disappionted by the lens, especially when you consider that it's supposed to cost 1000$. One thing that holds for it though is its minimal focus distance which is extremely low. I also own the NIkkor S 500 F1.8 and this lens is just straight up amazing. I got on the recent sale for under 400$ new. And there is nothing on the market in that price-range (or even twice as expensive) that can match it.

Sony has a more mature platform, far better lens selection given their lens mount is totally open, better battery life, dual card slots (which may not matter to you), more advanced focus tracking. Nikon feels better in hand, has a better evf, screen, slightly better video, and menu system, their lenses can be found at amazing discounts, and can be sharper at the edges, often with less focus breathing in video, although Sony offers great video specific lenses from Zeiss. I prefered Nikon, but you can't go wrong with either.

Sony doesn't have a better lens selection, people here just dismiss the fact that you can natively adapt Nikon's F-Mount lenses which includes Nikkor lenses and 3rd party lenses from Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and others. That's hundreds and hundreds of lenses right there, and many of them having AF and 3-axis IBIS supported.
Nikon is way easier to work with.

Yeah. I updated the firmware and see that as well. It's always my luck that I release a video and then that feature is added basically the same day.
I always was a Nikon girl. I owned a D90, D3s, D700, D750 and a Nikon z 6. After a one day experience with an other photographer I switched to Fuji. For my style to shoot it was a good change. I never got that sharp images out of nikon. I like to hear you all are fine with Nikon.
Ive had my Z6 for 11 months now. Mostly using with adapted F mount Nikon and Sigma lenses. Purchased the Z 50mm f1.8 and Z 35mm f1.8 two months ago as soon as they went on sale. This camera consistently exceeds my expectations, and these two Z lenses are otherworldly. I never fell in love with any of the DSLR's that Ive owned or used over the last couple decades. They always felt like clunky technology in my hands, and just too many compromises no matter who much you spent. I absolutely love my Z6. It is the perfect combination for my use. My regret is that Nikon didnt get into the APS-C/FF Mirrorless game sooner. Now its not a matter of putting out a comparable product to your competitor (Sony, since they are the biggest player in mirrorless by far) and letting the consumer decide. Youve got to bring products that are considerably better and at lower price points, because a) Sony's head start is huge and b) Sony has got virtually every influencer in their back pocket. Nikon cannot afford to keep losing money on DSLR's just to appease this tiny loud mouthed segment of the market that in truth isnt going to put their money where there mouth is come release time of that next DSLR or F lens. They need to stop production of all DSLR's and F lenses(except maybe the D850 for another year or so) and fully focus on churning out Z bodies and lenses. 1-2 bodies and 6-8 lenses a year minimum. 2020 will be a pivotal year for Nikon's future in the camera market. They must release 2 bodies this year, and one of those must be a true pro level body (two memory card slots, vertical grip, 60MP, improved IBIS, improved AF and so forth). They must release the 14-28 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8, and the 24-200 superzoom in 2020. Would be nice to see the 24-105, 100-400, and maybe the 105 macro. But, they must complete the holy trinity lineup, and they must have a FF superzoom in 2020. If they cannot achieve this in 2020, it will just be too hard in 2021 to gain ground.

I'm not planning to switch but the Nikon has a few things going for it that I like, but Sony is still where I'm at.
Have long used the front buttons reprogrammed for front button AF (also have BBAF set - each with different focus point setup) and find them awesome from switching from single point to group for birds in flight. Glad to see that you found it as useful on the Z6. Haven't switched or purchased mirror less yet because I shoot sports and wildlife. Switching to the SONY A9 would mean trading in a lot of glass. And Jerad, at the end of your video you make several statements I can't agree with. I am a Nikon shooting and the Z6/Z7 are not for me yet because they do not provide a significant advantage for BIF/Wildlife shooting. For those married to the two card slot system for backup they would also not be the camera of choice. When Nikon fixes this (i.e. AF speed, FPS, two card slots for those that need it) then it may bring others over. I also would argue that the reasons you say you like the Nikon Z (ergos, menus) can't be said of the SONY. Menu system is not good and hasn't been improved by SONY. I agree that I love the menu system of Nikon. Canon isn't bad either. Nor is Olympus or for some Fujifilm. The color EVF on Nikon's Zs has to be way better than when you switched over to SONY from Canon and so would the battery life now. That said, the Z system also doesn't have a functional (with buttons) vertical grip. One advantage to mirror less you didn't mention is the ability to use focus peaking (was it better btw on Sony or Nikon or Canon?) and manual lenses. Last, I hear that the Z system sensor does not get as dirty as the SONYs. A friend of mine that shoots professional time lapse gave his SONYs back to SONY because he couldn't keep the sensors clean. Eye-AF is neat but I can't rely on it. People who swear by Eye-AF haven't tried to take a photo with more than one face in it before.
The review is fine, but.... You say you don't have fast lenses available? Don't have pro lenses available? What the heck is a pro lens? Man you are holding one of the best lenses on earth, this 24-70 f/2.8! And all the other 1.8 primes, plus the 70-200mm f/2.8... These are real fast glass, first class! I really don't get this craziness about 1.4, 1.2, 1.0, 0.95 lenses! The bokeh thing??? The bokeh thing is so misplaced nowadays... People go to the Grand Canion, to London, to Rio de Janeiro, to the Sahara Desert just to blow away all the background! It makes no difference at all where you are... We can take pictures in our bathroom and nobody will know with everything blown away with excessive bokeh! The same thing with portraits... People buy extremely sharp lenses, cameras with 45, 60, 100 megapixels just to go to photoshop and blow away all the details on the skin, making the models look like mummies!

They are mid line as there will be higher end lenses still to come like the 24-70mm f/2.8. I never said the lenses don't perform well. I just wouldn't switch until they have an 85mm f/1.4.

My nikon Z6 is impossible to use. She does not focus well in single focus mode. Only focuses well on the automatic, and to make it worse is giving an error that only resolves if you remove the battery. Not a casual mistake, it happens at least 3 times per event, sometimes even more. Her wifi to upload photos is ridiculously slow. And the face and eye detector only works on close portraits and in perfect light conditions.
Don't worries man, that is normal, you can be married but still graving much offen the mistress ...completely normal. 😉
What do you mean there's not enough lenses for that camera? didn't Nikon release that camera with a Nikon adapter so you could use older Nikon lenses natively with that camera? For God's sakes man, take advantage of what Nikon has created for you and pick up some f-mount lenses!!
Adapter puts extra weight. Yes it is solution but not all lenses works perfect with z system, specially d series lenses. Also some third party lenses dont work well. Nikon people alrady have awesome beast dslr camera so there is some hesisation like should i wait to switch or should i get in to risk.

Hundreds, thousands? Bought into the Z6 Filmmaker’s Kit with the promise that Nikon and Atomos would deliver the “game changing” ProRes RAW (August 2019) and now... NOTHING! Not a word. (Word is that - since Sony supplies the Video Chip - Sony our the kabash on that and we were gyped. As a life long Nikon/Nikkor shooter... I have never felt more ripped-off and betrayed by a company.
Atomos are saying that it's ready and Nikon is testing the system. Nikon is not the company that uses lots of PR. They prefer to just make good cameras. I think that you don't want to be a beta tester for free.
That would be great... but say I’m from “Kansas” ie I’ll believe it when I see it - on my recorder - since I have seen no official announcement (and it would be difficult to make an announcement w/official word from Sony on what deal was cut for their video chip)
@@TheGeoDaddy That option is already available for the new Sigma L mount camera. And it uses the same chip. Basically they all use the same great 24 MP chip. Only Canon nowadays make their own FF sensors. And as far as I know Sony sensor division have it's own autonomy (sort of). I also look forward to that upgrade cause what I've seen from Sigma is WOW. I bet you can make a movie with that tech.
We are talking about being able to by-pass the camera’s SSD and write LOG to the Atomos recorder over HDMI, right? The only thing you can - now - is write LOG (Nikon N-Log) but that’s is not compressed... so we are talking about file sizes 4/5 times the size of ProRes RAW that 4/5 times the amount of storage. That is more expensive than renting a camera system that already shoots in the ProRes RAW format (if you tightly manage your shooting)

I've heard the interview of Atomos representative where he said that it's basically ready but Nikon is super scrupulously testing it and that's why it's not available yet. I believe that Nikon thinks that they MUST got it right cause they consider small crew filmmakers to be one of their main customers (they made a statement on that point, we live in youtube times). All lenses of Z mount are made with video in mind (almost non existent focus breathing and silent motors).

and I shooting mainly in low light situations such as movie theater clubs
and I can say that in these situations the z6 really sucks
