This TV series was the main motivation for me taking three years of German language in High school [1967-1970]
it was a Skill set that served me well during my cold war tour of duty in Nuremberg Germany [1976-1979]

Then you might like to watch again the Episode A CHILD´S GAME - it was done as a reaction to the German War movie from the Fifites DIE BRÜCKE ( movie, 1959 ) direccted by Bernhard Wicki who also had coworked on THE LONGEST DAY. Both that episode and the German movie are on UA-cam right now
The BRIDGE ( Die Brücke ) was based on a German Past War novel by GREGOR DORFMEISTER, under the pen-name Manfred Gregor . Dorfmeister sait to have based it on his personal War year experiences.

My Dad was a Tech Sgt. in the Signal Corp in Europe in WW2. Four different areas of operations. In both CP's and field ops. He never talked about the war except a couple of funny stories. It wasn't til I watched Band of Brothers a few years back what he must have seen and been through. He never mentioned the smell that must have been everywhere. Dead, burnt, blasted and ruined everywhere. Growing up he took us camping out in forests, no people around. He love being away from civilization, except for brief stops in tiny towns in the mountains.

What I love about all this is that when I was a kid in combat would come on you got to watch the show there was no watching it again it was live on TV right then. I always remember at the end listening to the last musical notes as the credits went by and realizing I had not done my homework. It's so much fun to be able to watch these wonderful episodes over and over again. Thank you

82 Germans voted thumbs down! My mother, who was German and came to the US after the war, hated this show. My dad, a GI who fought in France and Germany during the war, loved it. As did I. My Dad was in WWII and Korea and we used to watch this together and both loved it. He thought ole Sarge portrayed the role like a 'real' one. But a lot of the scenes where Germans get mowed down so easily wasn t realistic. We know it was the show's way of dealing with combat and the individual stories. But Dad remarked many times just how good the German soldier was, a deadlly force to be reckoned with. He never told me much about any real action he was in, just stuff like this or funny occurances. @@mach1gtx150 After you watch a few episodes you come to believe that German soldiers were incompetent idiots who thought bullets would be stopped by bushes and it was OK to run in front of Saunders and his Tommy Gun. Germans were actually pretty good soldiers. They didn't do so well fighting Russians in the Winter at Stalingrad, but no Army would. The Germans simply did not know how bad Russian Winters could be. As far as Combat goes, every once in a while they would show an American getting killed. Generally it was always a new guy.

My Dad had a Thompson in Korea and a .45. He said that he liked to carry as many grenades as he could handle too. That was always my contention when watching war movies, an extra grenade could get you out of a lot of scrapes! When my Dad was assigned to Ft McClelllan Alabama in '63, the local kids and I would play soldiers in all of the wood around there. My Dad was a Major then. Our last name is Sanders. There are a few episodes that are a bit silly and unbelievable, but the majority are realistic and sensitively done. I love that there is little blood and no gore. I love that they devote a few episodes to showing that not all Germans were inhumane.

Courage is not the absence of fear, it's the capacity to manage it. The young Frenchman seems to have mastered this as depicted in this scene: 31:04. I taught this to my skydiving students. I don't care who you are, if you are going to exit an aircraft at any altitude AGL, fear will be a component of your operation. This we must accept and manage. We cannot deny that we are experiencing fear and cope appropriately with it. And yes, sometimes that involves hiding the fact that we are experiencing it.

We actually see for the first time, I believe, or rather hear Sgt. Saunders (Vic Morrow) complaining about a dirty deal he is receiving by having this detail with Sgt. Perkins (Richard Anderson) as he feels that this man is a risk to his squad. This demonstrates how Sgt. Saunders deals with a bad hand that is dealt to him: he goes about doing his best in a bad situation. This speaks of the professionalism and resiliency of the character as portrayed by Vic Morrow. Sgt. Perkins (equal rank) although a brilliant earlier day IT guy lacks human interaction even though he speaks 4 languages. Notice how Sgt; Saunders chastizes him for showing a huge lack of respect for the résistant fighters when Perkins calls them "fools" - espèce d'idiot. Still, the character played by Richard Anderson does indeed develop as he meets a younger more human version of himself (Jacques)and finally redeems himself. Perkins wants to give up the mission when the going gets tough. Sgt.Saunders does not.He hangs on, the tenacity, the true fighting spirit of an individual who will not foolishly risk the lives of his men (going back to his quevetching with Lieutenant Hanley) until he is either beaten or achieves his mission. This épisode is an interesting lesson in life: don't give up and respect your fellow men (men in the archaic sense of the word: man=person)As to the technical détails mentioned elsewhere by others, it does really not bear repeating but here goes: the anomalies in this series are légion. The script writing is spot on and the acting here make modern TV series look often pale in comparison. In my opinion, these two éléments are what make this séries work.
Richard Anderson is known in many films and séries: the 6 Million Dollar Man, the Forbidden Planet, Gettysburg, Dynasty and so on. Born in 1926, Richard Anderson was still active a couple of years ago. A long and fine career. Merci pour le téléchargement.

The opening battle scene on this one is cut from parts of a prior episode. Don't remember the other episode name but think it had Saunders & his squad rescuing a downed pilot & his recon camera and then having to fight their way against a Kraut platoon who was also dispatched to get the recon camera. This battle scene was originally a Kraut ambush where they set up between Saunders and a river they had to cross to get back to their lines. You'll see recycled scenes in other episodes on occasion.

SCR 300 weighed either 32 lbs or 38 lbs with batteries. Most of those early portable radios had two batteries , one for vibrator that supplied grid voltage the other battery supplied the tube plate voltage for the receiver and transmitter. It has something like 18 tubes in it which is pretty unbelievable that it worked at all on FM 40-48mhz with 1/3W output.

Then they bitched about the little snail-shell receiver that clipped to the steel pot not having any range. Ya just can't please some people.

Perhaps I missed some lines, but why the title "A Silent Cry", I wonder.
The lines Jacques and Perkins recite in the cellar are from A Midsummer Night's Dream, when Bottom awakes from his dream of being an ass (which does fit in a way) and claims no one could understand his crazy dream (but in the next lines after these says he'll ask Peter Quince to write a ballad about it anyway): "The eye of man hath not heard, the ear of man hath not seen, man’s hand is not able to taste, his tongue to conceive, nor his heart to report what my dream was."
