      except the Maqui could have just shot the guy and been done with it at several points in the script.

    12 O'clock High is another good series. My Grandfather was in the Army Air Core and was a gunner on a Air fortress.

    I was 10 years old when the series came out and of course it was my favourite but how can an immature kid appreciate the depth of this series. Now as an overly mature adult the stories are multi-dimensional and transforming!

      You are right my friend. I too was 10 years old and I have waited until now to be able to appreciate what a great series this was. I will be 70 on June 3rd 2023. God bless America and all who died for our freedom.

    Extraordinarily good showing of the internecine fights within the Maqui. Excellent episode, good acting, marvelous story line.

    A compelling episode. Hanley played the game of chess superbly. They were all great. " Combat " now belongs to the age of the immortals so to speak. In that it is a true classic never to be outdone. I salute all of them. They also showed America at its greatest.

    A bit of trivia. This is the first TV role of Peter Renaday. He plays Louis the surgeon. He's the taller, French man with glasses, a beard and cabbie hat as I call it. Here he is credited as P. L. Renoudet. Peter Renaday voiced Mandrake the Magician in "Defenders of the Earth", but his most famous voice over work is as Master Splinter from the 80's TMNT.

    The best Combat episode, seeing it now. Since I eagerly watched every episode as a kid I would've seen this in the 1960s. I'm sure I would not have grasped the significance of this storyline.

      @@georgesslowik7752 NO. They were wiped out by the 2SS on its way to Normandy -- and they, the locals, had no idea about the maquis involved. That's why they all 'refused' to give them up. They really didn't know anything! Only a few Germans were even shot at and hit. The idea was to harass the 2SS -- to delay its arrival. Nothing more. Ironically, by murdering a whole town, the 2SS delayed themselves more than the maquis ever could. In Normandy, the 2SS was chewed up by the US Army. After Falaise, it had to be entirely re-built for the Battle of the Bulge. It was then liquidated by the Soviets after the end of the war -- in Czechoslovakia. They fought until they ran out of bullets.

    This brings back memories, one I remember is the Duel. However even as a kid I thought the Germans should have won at least 1/2 of these fire fights. The attack on the truck here, the canvas nor the truck tail gate would have stopped any of the bullets! By rights all should have been dead in the first 15 seconds at these distances. My Dad loved the show, so I really cant complain ;)

    Anyone ever wonder why the bullet holes in the opening of combat are square? A long time ago when I first watched in the '60s I counted 8 of them (which there are and I have always remembered) and assumed it was a reference to the 8 rounds in an M1 Garand clip.

      I came here to say that. Great story telling and acting. Alfred has been challenged. All of these series that I have watched in the 1960s show the disparity in production and script writing that has numbed many since.

    You might be right about that and it's interesting to speculate whether the number of strikes corresponds to the number of rounds in an M1's stripper clip. I always thought that those were artillery shell strikes, especially because of the apparent shell fragment strikes beyond the impact center. The square holes might have been easier to create and replicate, as representations of bullet or shell impacts on a target field.

    There were a lot more French men and women who collaborated than the French like to admit. The southern region, where anti-Semitism & sympathy for Fascism were strong, was governed by collaborators from 1940-42. It was known as Vichy France. French police cooperated with the Gestapo in rounding up Jews for deportation and they were very effective and thorough.

    • @pigalleycatemanresu7321
      @pigalleycatemanresu7321 4 роки тому +3

      There was very little collaboration in the free zone of Vichy France until November of '42, when the Germans occupied the free zone, as they had in the north since '40. Anti_semitism was actually stronger in the North, in Alsace, and in Paris, where most of French jews lived. Many Jews, esp artists and musicians, lived in the free zone, and many tried to leave through the southern ports and the Pyrenées. There were many collaborators, North and South, but deportation in the Free Zone did not occur until after Nov.'42. France was a very divided country since the Dreyfus Affair, which polarized the country into 2 main camps, republican intellectual anti-clerical left, and catho, anti-semite and fascist right, that fought it out at the ballot box, the press, and in the streets in the '30s, with very little will left to fight the Nazis.

      That’s why they call it a young man’s war. Their energy is relentless and renews itself everyday. The older you get the more tired you become. That’s explained in 12 o’Clock High’s “Storm at Twilight” episode when an older staff member of Col. Gallagher’s office wanted to be a combat pilot for personal reasons. The other pilots around him were 22 years old on the average.

      LOL when I was shooting mine in NRA HiPower, there are 10-round strings of rapid fire. You use an aftermarket 2-round clip for the first shots, then try to ogle your target through your spotting scope while you stick an 8-rounder in there without chambering your thumb. They also make 5-round Garand clips for States with restrictions on cartridge capacity for hunting.

    The French resistance groups were made up at times of motley different groups politucally as well. In this episode be marquis were after a colaborator with he Germans. Sometimes the supposed collaborators supplied vital information and intelligence about the German forces that the normal resistance groups could not find out. A very deadly knife edge situation to get oneself into in the intellegence war to fight by spying on the German forces . The British slowed down weapon and ammunition supplies after the invasion to the resistance groups as the politics of resistance cells led to deadly infighting amongst themselves, communist against the conservatives and Gaulists, etc. Not only France, but in Greece also. The most famous collaborator spy was the Frenchman manager who found out information about U Boat activities and passed it onto British intelligence. It was only after the war his true brave efforts were made public, but during the war he was deeply despised by his fellow Frenchman for his collaboration with the German occupation.
