Always had big respect for DL because of the way the band handled Rick’s tragic accident. They shut down operations and came back after things were set up where he could play. And they didn’t bring in another drummer and have Rick on the side playing along as an auxiliary or bongo player. They stayed with him as their drummer. Much respect.
Interestingly, they had a backup drummer at first just in case Rick couldn't get through the shows. After the first few gigs he told the band Rick was going to be just fine and that he wasn't needed 👍
I’m 50 and remember when his accident happened. Kudos to his band mates for sticking with him, especially at their young ages. A true artist. A resilient and determined human. What an inspiration through his personal trials and tribulations.
Right, most bands would have axed him because fame and getting a job done is more important. If it had been Guns n Rosed Axl would have had him out in a heartbeat lol, glad they kept him and it’s an interesting piece of rock lore to have a one armed drummer
Me, too. Any other band would’ve replaced him in no time. Instead, these guys waited, helped him build a new kit and learn to use it… one of the most inspirational stories of brotherhood ever. I was a Def Leppard fan before the accident and even more so afterward. I was fortunate to see them twice back in the Hysteria days ( before they lost Steve Clarke) and twice since. Such GREAT musicians and inspirational guys.

To Rick Allen: Hello my name is Judy Oger, I To am 58 years old. When I was in high school Def Leppard was "IT" with Foreigner, 38 Special and a few others that followed. I played drums in elementary school and through high school, it was my therapy for stuff happening at home that I had no control over, so I get the meditative reference from your perspective. God be with you on your continued journey.
He may have lost his arm but he gained so much during his journey in his recovery. I'm loving the Prince portrait. He's done so well in his music and his art. Keep going forward!
I grew up with def Leppard music, and remember when he had the accident. Was a huge inspiration to me, to not give up, not give in. And I am sure his story affected millions of other people in one way or another in their life. I saw Def Leppard in 1982 before Rick's accident. In the days of General Admission Concerts. I was almost trampled in the rush of the crowd, and was pulled out and brought backstage. When he says it became a blessing I understand that I'm disabled and I've also been mentally physically and sexually abused growing up I sometimes wish that part didn't happen to me but here's the thing I have helped so many people with their disabilities and I have helped so many people who have been through what I've been through growing up I made sure to never let my past get in the way of my future I didn't turn out like my parents I turned out to be a good person despite what I went through and I have overcome it all and I am a wonderful mother and I have wonderful children who have never known any hurt when it comes to their parents you don't have to let your past Define you you don't have to be a victim or stay a victim you can become a strong Survivor as show people that you can overcome anything keep the faith and keep strong thank you Rick for making that point...
I remember that sad event...Def Leppard rocks...saw them live in 1983 in Michigan and was hands down the best concert I ever saw...I got an authentic british flag shirt...This story is very inspiring!💜
