Many of us don't have room in our shops to have a separate Assembly Table, Outfeed Table, and Woodworking Bench. And we are always short of storage in our woodshops. This table is a request from several of my Patreon members and followers of the channel.
Why a Torsion Box?
A Torsion Box is a method to create a table top that cannot bend, flex, or warp in any way. And above all else to be perfectly flat. And that’s really it. The ultimate goal is simply to have an unchanging laser-flat surface.
With that we can now use it to assemble and build our furniture. The surface becomes a reference surface since it is perfect. We can check square from it, and parallel from it. And it makes assembly much easier and much more accurate. It enhances all aspects of a furniture build and becomes the focal point of both the assembly phase, and nearly all aspects of your woodworking.
People asked me if I had a video of my old torsion box assembly table. I didn’t. So I decided that this is a must do project. And probably the most requested project I’ve ever done. I sent out questions to see what people would like. I tried to combine all of those with my thoughts and create something that could take on many sizes. I designed this in 3 different table sizes with full plans for each. A Full Size 4’ x 8’ Table, A Mid-Size 3-1/2’ x 7’ Table, and A Smaller 3’ x 6’ Table.
It’s an upgradeable tool for the workshop. The Extreme Torsion Box Assembly Table can start out in life very simply. I’ve engineered the leg assemblies in such a way that you can start with just the basic leg unit and the torsion box top and have a fully functional assembly table. Then as time goes on, you can upgrade by adding cabinetry. You can do it with shelves or even cabinet doors. Then as time and finances permit, you can push it to the extreme and add a bench vise, with bench dog holes, full drawers and even clamp racks at the ends. This will help break the cost of the project down into thirds. And it’ll let you upgrade whenever your needs change to warrant it.

We love teaching the world to do woodworking.
Your daughters have turned out to be quite the wood workers. You must be very proud of them. Great to have a teacher like you and thanks for sharing.
Hi Dale. I am very proud of them. They are both excellent woodworkers and hard workers.
Making something to be 'fit for purpose' is good, but making it look a work-of-art is the epitomy of showing that you and your daughters enjoy producing a final product of excellent quality too. This is really what matters at the end of each road. It is such a pleasure to watch all of you do your work.
Hi Harry, thank you! You are very kind.
Beautiful build you and your family do awesome work great video
That thing is a beast! A purple beast! Love it!
Hi Bonnie. Thank you!
Extraordinary craftsmanship!
I love the finishing work James & Family just fantastic work !!! The vice will be a great addition
Hi Andrew. Thanks a lot!
Thank you, James! I agree about making shop furnishings look as nice as you possibly can and using that work to practice and refine skills. It has helped me... Keep up the good work!
Hi Bobby. Thank you!
I want the compression bit....that thing is awesome!
And you can have one for the low, low price of only $174.00
King's Fine Woodworking I just had to upgrade my computer. I’m broke now.
:-(
@@autigersx311 just on the offchance you're in the UK, wealdon tools make one for £38ish, not solid carbide
I'm in the us Virgin Islands the lignum vitae tree grows all over here ,very slow growing in St barts they call it the gyacc tree also known as the iron wood tree it's the tree that represents that island ,it's also illegal to cut it .
Beautiful job James (Although the photo bomber did most of the work 😎)
Happy Father’s Day too you!
Thank you for the Father's Day wishes. And its true, I can give her most of the credit.
I dig it.
Make the table bigger and add more glue :-)
I was going to but they ran out of glue in my state.
"Don't forget the glue. Once you think you've used enough, you're about halfway there " lmao!
Glue is the most important part of life.
!👍👍👍...
Thank you!
Canthat router go hiert

I must say you and your daughters do some amazing wood working! I enjoy watching all your videos!
Thank you!

Hey Kings ❤️! I’m still in the process of moving, which is a total pain. Sorry I’ve been a stranger. I’ll be back in touch soon.
Awesome and TOTALLY EXTREME torsion box multi-function assembly table! It really is fantastic. Love the purple heart with the tiger maple. Thanks so much for the comprehensive series on this build.
Thanks Barbara! We look forward to seeing you in the chat again!
I love how you got your whole family involved in this. This is a great trade to pass onto the young ones. Awesome craftsmanship.
Beautiful work! I did cringe when your daughter fed a 1x2 through the planer with her thumb and index finger.
9:29 I'm imagining an angry guinea pig popping out, grabbing its cubby hole liner out of your hand and popping back in... :)
You didn't put glue on the clamp shelves??? I'm astonished...
Hello Kings !!!
That AIN'T no work bench !!!!!!
That's a family arloom that will be handed down for generations and then put in a museum to show what man used to do !!!!!
To say to you that is a work of art is a understatement !!!!
That's a family tradition !!!👍👍👍
BRAVO !!! BRAVO !!!
YOU NEVER CEASE TO AMAZE !!!!!!
Thank you so much! You are very kind.
Absolutely perfect!!! That thing is amazing. I especially love how it’s a labor of love for the whole family. Great job keeping everyone involved. Any idea on a ballpark of what the materials cost for the whole project?
Hi Shane.Thank you! I'll have to add up the materials and see.
Supreme combo with that maple and Purple Heart! This will be a bench your daughters will use for their life also!
I hope so. That is the plan.
I bought my second of your mallets for a Father’s Day gift and I actually made one of my own that I am quite proud of and would love to show you. I’ll email you some pictures. :)
Hi Ian! I would love to see pictures!
Hi James and you family ! Great work ! The best in the tube ! About your mallets , delivery to Italy ? Kind regards.
Hello thank you! You are very kind. And yes, we ship our Mallets to Italy.
Just a concern watching your daughters use the jointer she has her hand on the end pushing short boards need s push stick. Dont want anyone to loose a findet
Thank you. We will be more careful.
Lot of mayonnaise for this delicious dish.
I know I'm a couple years late, but I must say I’ve learn so much about wood and woodwork from your lessons. I am from the Caribbean and the lignum vitae tree is significant to my culture. I never appreciated the absolute beauty of the wood from this tree. After many years of DIY as a hobby, I finally decided to formally join the world of carpentry. Thank you James for keeping it concise real and massively informative. I hope to join your Facebook page as soon as I produce my first piece😄🌸🌺🌻❤️
Hi James and family! Your answer on questions about why you do shop projects with so much care is absolutely spot on! Well done! You inspire us!!👍
Hi Wilhelm, thank you so much. That is very kind!
Absolutely terrific project! The work is beautiful, your explanation is crystal clear, and you make a seemingly complex build entirely approachable. I’m planning to do a work table project so I will purchase a set of your plans and look forward to learning as I do this one! I am surprised to see that you don’t have more likes (so I added mine!) and congratulate you on a great video, a great project, and really great work.
Question: Is it safe to have fingers near and/or inside guard of jointer? It seems a push block would be wise.
Safety is a personal responsibility. Don't do anything unsafe for your skill level.
I’m blown away by the fine craftsmanship you demonstrate on your projects and this one is no exception. You are absolutely right, if you are going to be working with it for the rest of your life, then you want it to be the best you can make it. Well done to you and your family.
Hi Phil! You are very kind. Thank you!
I like your practical, no frills approach to woodworking. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and tips with us!
Hello, I'm in the UK and have been watching your videos for some time now. My question is about your chop saw. Can you tell me the model? I'm asking because it seems to have a very good dust collection system, which is something I always struggle with on these types of saws. Thanks a lot.
Hey James, where do you get your drawer slides from? I'm starting my first project with drawers ever and I remember you really liking yours and that you found a good deal on them. Thanks!!
Why use hardwood? Why router the edges? Why..? Same reason why you use 14 gallons of glue building ya torsion box; because that's how you do a good job.
question: since you are putting a face board on the rim of the cubby area, why not make the outer frame a PART of the grid? I think it would add a bit more rigidity and be a bit easier to assemble? also, do you know that by running a heat gun over purpleheart you can revitalize it after cutting it to a rich deep purple color?
bonjour tres bon travail j aime
Great work kings!! Never miss a video, you guys are awesome!!
Thank you!
The only complaint I have about your videos is that they end! Awesome build man. I love that your family is involved as well.
you breaking rule number one while using hand router on high cutting... always run the router first wrong way before fine tuning the edge of thing you route on..
Man that spiral cutting router bit you used for the cubbyholes better be bad ass for $175!!
👍👍👍. ✌️😎
I'll bet the glue companies love you. Good job though.
got to be the best torsion box design i have seen
Thank you. That’s very kind.
Thank you for what you do You and your family are Awesome.
Of all the vast selection of woods out there to choose from, how is it that you chose two of my top four (the others are rosewood and black walnut) for the edges and drawer fronts on your bench? B-E-A-utiful bench, no doubt. I agree that you should always do your level best on everything you build, but I'd waist so much time being careful not to scratch, cut, or gouge that beautiful wood. How do you determine where beauty and function meet?
Thanks Thomas. I don't know where beauty and function meet. But that is pretty cool, we like the same species.
This work bench/table is fantastic!
You make good points about using good materials and designs for shop projects. It is always nice to be surrounded by well-made objects -- and the people who make them. And practice is always good, as you say. But there are other reasons to take extra care in building shop projects, within the limits of time and expense.
(1) Marketing: If prospective clients come to your shop, then a display of your skill and attention to detail will serve you well. It is like the pre-industrial joiners who took special care in building their tool boxes so all could see their skills.
(2) Cool Factor: When your friends and colleagues come by for a chat, they will look at your shop works and say, "Cool!" And that is always very cool.
As always, well done! Thanks for sharing.
Hi Jerry. Great ideas. Thank you!
Another great video James and family. James I like your philosophy for shop furniture. I agree that mine needs to look good because I’m going to be using it a lot and I like practicing the skills I need for my woodworking projects while making my shop furniture. BTW - Are the girls interested in coming out to California to help me make my next cabinet for the shop? They sure have a lot of experience and skills.
Hi Don! Thank you. I bet they would love to come to California. But then I wouldn't have anybody to make videos with.
King's Fine Woodworking I’ve been making sone videos that are posted on my website and UA-cam channel.
Nice work. I’m finally making progress in my new garage workshop. I’m about half way through wiring in the new outlets. 60amps of power. It’s gonna be great. Nothing love your shop, but still pretty nice.
That's fantastic. A shop of any size is awesome to have!
Hi James and family, that's a beautiful, sturdy and great project. I hope that one day i would be able to do such a wonderful création.
It's a pleasure To follow your team each time. Big up from a french fan 😊😄😉
Hi Sebastien. Thank you!
Your videos are always an inspiration in both practicality and precision. Amazing. Also, that's going to be a very very beautiful piece.
Thank you so much!
Maybe I missed it but what wood did you use on your drawer fronts? I'm building a machinists tool chest and box as a graduation gift to my brother-in-law and after this video I finally decided what wood I want to use. The grain in that white wood is beautiful and would look great in a machine shop.
That is Pacific Coast Quilted Maple.
thank you James . that is a work of art
Великолепная семейка,молодцы!👍
Mr. K, I enjoy your so much due to you never do anything half cocked, meaning the best woods, so beautiful.
Thank you! That is very kind.
Well, another great video as usual! You and the girl's did a fantastic job! 👏 Thank you for sharing! I can't wait to get started on mine! 😁
Hi Bill. Thank you!
what router would you recommend for beginner woodworker I have a Ridgid cordless trim router looking for a router with 1/2 inch arbor?
Hi Travis. The best thing that you can do is get a router with plunge capability. A lot of woodworking functions will require you to have a plunge router. If you get a router that has both a fixed base and a plunge base it costs a little bit more up front, but will serve the function of two routers. And its a tool that you can grow with. My favorite tool in this category is the Bosch. It has both 1/2" and 1/4" collets so all of your existing router bits will work in it too. Here is a link if you want to check it out. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01F6MVZX2?ie=UTF8&tag=kingsf-20&camp=1789&linkCode=xm2&creativeASIN=B01FY6VB1G&th=1
Thanks for the acetone/exotics tip. Never heard that before but it makes perfect sense.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
Purple heart man, that wood is so beautiful. I never seen it in real life. I have a question though. So with this table, lets say you damage the top, a corner piece of a project drops at just the right angle into one of the hollow spaces of the torsion box. what is the step to correct that, because the top was glued on, not screwed on, if i was paying attention?
It will get dents and dings even though we are careful. But the flatness will remain and so we can still work on it.
When you are using the chop saw, why do you run a shallow pass then go back and forth to finish the cut? I see others do it as well. Just wondering.
It prevents tear-out on the top of the wood.
عمل رائع وتصميم اجمل -- very good
Thank you!
Very nice!!!👍👍👍
Thanks Shaun!
Great work king family! As always exceptional quality! Cant wait for the next one!
Thank you Andrew!
What a table. Love watching you and your daughters working together.
Hi Deb. Thank you!
I love this project as much as you love glue! Can't wait to get into my new house to build myself one. I like the fact that you can build in stages.
Hi Jason. Thank you!
I'd like to load that up on a flat bed trailer and and weigh it at the truck stop. Looks super stout!
Haha, I think we estimated 1100 or 1200 pounds.
Great Job!!!!
Another Great project. Great looking Table to work on.
Thank you!
Dear James,
A very substantial piece with lots to do & conceived with lots of features which I am sure will serve you well in the future. Can't wait to see the end results. Very well done. Kind regards.
Thank you very much!
Dear James,
Thank you very much for your courteous & hearted reply. Good folks who spend a large proportion of their valuable time creating such lovely works & to boot documenting with comments, all for our enjoyment ought to be rewarded with some sort of appreciations from the viewers in my humble opinion. Kind regards.
many thanks James, keep up the good work. Kind regards to all the crew.
Fantastic job looks great
Hi Colin. Thank you!
Hi, I love your channel. But you know you dont need that much glue right? You strike me as an intelligent man. There is only so much surface provided and your wanting to get those boards as close as humanly possible. Therefore the area should just be covered liberally. All that squeeze out is for not. Sorry, just my two cents..lol keep on rockin james. 👍
You are exactly right. It’s just a trademark kind of thing we do for fun. 😁👍🏻
If it's worth gluing, it's worth overgluing.
AWESOME build!
Thank you !
Amazing! Perfect!
Thank you!
Awesome job
Thank you!
Love!!!
Hi Tammy. Thank you!
first!
Haha!
Just one word, "Superb"
That is very kind, Tony, thank you.
Top job. Always an inspiration to watch. Those draw front off cuts could be a nice knife set , maybe. Thanks again for sharing such great content, you are a making the world a better place with every video. Cant wait for the next one. cheers
Hi Matt. That is one of the kindest comments we have ever received. Thank you!
