This week I hit 9 months as an unloader on the early AM shift. My name goes on the transfer list to become a driver on Tuesday. From there it should only be 1-3 months until I transfer up to drive.
It took me about 2 full months to get physically used to unloading, and now that I’m efficient at it I actually love it. I would never unload for more than 2 years. It’s too physically demanding for so little pay, but the health insurance benefits are amazing

I am a 30 year UPS employee. I’ve been a driver for 23 years. I was hired in 1993 part-time making $8/hr. It took 7 years for me to get a driving position. We are Teamsters at UPS so moving up is always based on seniority. Back then it took a long time to move up high enough to get a drivers job. After the strike in 1997 UPS had to create full-time jobs and then the list to become a driver started to move a lot faster.
UPS is a very demanding company to work for, both physically and mentally but it is well worth it. Currently our top rate is $41.54/hr and that goes up every August 1st. We pay nothing for our healthcare and have a really good pension. You’ll hear UPS drivers complain a lot but in the end UPS has given me a great life and I consider myself very fortunate to have spent the last 30 years wearing brown.

Ive had many jobs in my life and you will always have bad management or co workers wherever you go. But if you just show up and do your part and don't engage in anyone else's business it makes it all manageable.

Go back to ups, u seem like an awesome guy, Christmas time is best time to get in where ups hires off the street drivers and you can get yourself in with management. This is where you can truly show your motivation for the job. Pleasant attitude under pressure, studying the 1 area and knowing it well that they keep you in during Christmas, and calling center immediately on route when done willing to help fellow drivers finish up.

UPS does hire people off the street to become drivers. I started as a package handler and worked that for about 5 months and after that I became a driver. Started my 30 day probation right in the first week of peak so it was tough and I got lucky because some drivers had to wait a year to start driving. Here in CA top pay is 40 and at first it was tough the cradle on my training package car didn’t work so I had no gps. I had to learn the streets on my own but it’s a great career to get into. I’m considered a part time 22.4 driver but work full time hours I probably won’t be a full time driver until the veteran drivers retire but there’s couple more drivers ahead of me

I got hired off the street during the pandemic, usually they hire drivers from within but I guess they needed drivers, I'm about to hit 2 years and this company has been ok to me, the insurance is supposedly one of the best but I haven't really used it so idk but the pay is great, the hours suck if you aren't a hard worker, i normally work from 9am-7:45 with one 1 hour unpaid lunch, sometimes they force you to work 6 days but it's based on seniority so they force from the bottom up .... one good thing is that if they work you over 9.5 hours for more than 3 days in a week you can file a grievance because of that and you get payed overtime rate for every hour you work over the 9.5 hours.... so basically triple pay..... starting driver pay is 21, 1 year 23, 2 years 24, 3 years 28.75, 4 years is top pay at 40.50

@@matthewp9740 in my opinion it's the hours, sometimes they force you in to work 6 days a week, we don't work Sundays to that's the only guaranteed day off but as you gain more seniority over the years theu won't force you anymore, that's pretty much it in my opinion, if you can survive to first couple years then you will have a great job cause this job is all based on seniority, the drivers that been here the longest don't get forced in on their days off, they have first dibs on the routs they want, and are first in line to pick vacation times.... but as I said you can get on the "9.5 list" so if they try to fuck you over and overwork you yih can file grievances and get payed "triple time" for very hour that you worked over 9.5 hours, but you have to work over 9.5 hours for 3 days or more in a week so it's basically free money
