You guys do as good of a job handling fish as any fishing channel on social media - great job caring for the trout and not disregarding the health of the fish in the name of the content (not that the content suffers at all - it's also top notch). It's great to see such good environmental stewardship - my hat is off to you!
NZ is fishing paradise when it comes to trout. U don't even have to try. Once after catching a monster (what I thought was a monster) my NZ compadres told me it was too small and to chuck it back! LOL, I said if I caught that one in Australia, I'd be on the front cover of fishing world LOL!
Keep up the good work. I enjoyed the honest frustration in this video. It keeps a dose of reality in there that you're not just roping fish in a barrel. And there's nothing wrong with some spin fishing from time to time :)
Doggone it, man-this is simply spectacular viewing! If I watch these at bedtime I get so jacked up I have trouble falling asleep. The caveat is that I have killer dreams of hooking into massive trout when I finally do conk out. Truly inspirational content as always!
Not that I have ever fallen down while fighting a fish but Dan that was funny. Full immersion. I walked off the is basalt shelf and went swimming. I had neoprene waders on so I popped right back up. Cold water wakes you right up. I always wade with a belt. Good God, huge trout, these are river monsters.
G, if you read a lot of the comments below there are many questions about the fishery - wild v stocked, land locked versus sea run, what they feed on, etc etc. Maybe give a bit of a lowdown at the start of the next vid in the series - I realise you are back home, but still...My understanding is they're mostly wild fish, migrate up from the canals to the headwaters running out of the lakes?
Go Lance love the bit where he steps back and goes for swim lol looks so funny as before he goes backwards you can see the rock behind him ( in this video ) however funnier still he managed to land it well done mate !!!! :)) what a great video
Awesome video as always, can't believe the size and quality of that fishery has to be a catch and release stream or I hope it is to keep those big boys in there
listening to him talk about the spin rod is hilarious "can't catch fish on it." Coming from Florida I grew up on spin rods. I'm about to start fly fishing and I was wondering the same thing about fly rods.
I grew up in Yellowknife doing spin fishing. I started fly fishing and caught a 5 inch brown trout on a dry fly and felt like a kid again. Trust your gut, get into fly fishing. It's the best way to fish hands down!
Another great video mate, can't wait to get back to NZ to fish, and I like your Toki. What is that slimy looking weed on the rocks? The rocks used to be clean and the water clear and pristine and now its grey.
Bro i have done 2 trips down from Taupo to the Mckenzie basin this winter and i cant get enough! The scenery and the high country atmosphere is truly special! And the fish are mystical beings to me. I am normally a meat hunter, but i cant bring myself to kill these sentient creatures. Love your work, and ill continue avoiding you at the hine! 🤣
World class fishing! Seems every other fish is a fish of a life time! Only had the pleasure to fish NZ once and it was epic! If only I had a local with me, could of been the best fly fishing if my life 😍
Been a keen fly fisherman since I was a kid! Always wanted to catch a monster, but in the Uk 7lb or above is! So wish I did more fly fishing in the South Island, seeing the whales you catch! Loving the videos boss 👌🏻
Question, do you Kiwis use metric or imperial? I always thought the US and maybe 2 other countries used imperial, but wasn’t sure if New Zealand used it also after hearing your refer to the weight in pounds
NZ changed to metric system of measurement in 1967, along with dollars and cents instead of, pounds and pence.Although big fish sound better in pounds than kilos.Which begs the question if the US can come up with a monetary system like they have, why so slow to convert to the metric system
Nice to see one of the 10%’ers have a day start just like us 90%’ers have for the whole day. You are human after all Gareth! Great video mate, appreciate your efforts.
Those are some beautiful catches. Our channel just got gifted a Redington Rise reel and I'm gonna learn how to fly fish now... lol wish me luck... great job on this video... beautiful fish... Hook set 🎣
Devin Wright . Yep, that’s the South Island NZ, did you see the snowy mountain range in the background? Thats the Southern Alps, massive range of mountains. This is the place that skiers from the North Hemisphere come in the off season, just think of all those poor tourists trapped in paradise during the Covid Epidemic! Harera..
"just a little 12 pounder, too easy" bro top the south we're lucky to get a 2 pounder on an average day. You guys are so lucky to get the opportunities to catch these monsters
CoopDawg I am a high schooler with no connection to fly fishing but I found an old rod and reel at a garage sale, I live by the truckee, any advice on where and what to fish with on the truckee?
Trout Hunting NZ half way around the world for me definitely one of my bucket list places to fish maybe once all this COVID mess is done it will be possible!
I was feeling pretty good about my 11 lb PB rainbow from Montana this August until I watched this video. Thanks Gareth!! Just kidding. Love watching you and Alex. P.S. The rainbow did crush a hopper which was way cool.
It’s definitely moist but maybe not quite as wet as other places. I remember going to North America in 2016 and their water was definitely a lot wetter.
Hello nice meeting you guys, I'm new at fly fishing and I lost a very large trout Sunday it got in the super fast current and I had to horse it a little bit and due to the tiny hooks these flies have it came unbuttoned. What size flies do you use that are dependable landing such powerful fish in fast water?
What kind of leader set up do you use in preparation for a 25 POUND FISH!? Not that I have a chance at one, just curious. Also, your bro sticking with that fish while up to his chin.......that's really high quality there.
So what's the deal with these bows? Do they run in from a lake into those canals or are they resident fish. I've also heard those are stocked by whatever the equivalent of New Zealand game and fisheries department is. Just generally how recently were those fish put in there and are they wild?
Unbelievable the size of them trout well done catching trout of life time for many people. fishing light gear as well what size rod and line weight do you use ?
The look of those fish in the water blows my mind. Really stupendous fishing, thanks so much for posting this vid.

Thanks buddy I appreciate your words🤙
That was frickin amazing, the size of those fish are just incredible. Lance is a legend for sticking with that fish and landing after his swim👊👊
Cheers mate 😂
This is just what I needed on a Wednesday

My Lord those are behemoth trouts. NZ'ers sure have the discipline practicing catch and release. Cheers from Colorado!!
you are watching guys who have a massive respect for the fishery unfortunately not everyone prescribes to this
That graceful dip in the drink, and those tank rainbows made my week 💯
Looking forward to more of your trips!
Keep up the good work. I enjoyed the honest frustration in this video. It keeps a dose of reality in there that you're not just roping fish in a barrel. And there's nothing wrong with some spin fishing from time to time :)
