    The difference was mainly caused by the tire difference of 18“ vs 19“. According to the US EPA the e40 gets 282miles and the M50 gets 270miles if both are on 19“ tires. If the e40 has 18“ it has a range of 301miles explaining the difference you observed. I am glad BMW gave you a car on 19“ which seem more relevant to most people compared to the 20“ tires the press cars usually have.

    Hi Björn. Thanks for the video. I have the M50 and I think, not sure why, that the car is more efficient when not in B mode on highways. B mode for towns, otherwise no B mode. Also, Eco mode will add some efficiency. Would be interesting to see you evaluate this.

    Those wheels take out 10% of range and the M50 is 200kg heavier than the e40. That's where the difference in range comes from. BMW also offers 19-inch aero wheels but even they don't look as slippery as the 18-inch aeros.

    Likely do with gearing and final drive - the eDrive40 is not as gear aggressively as the M50 which likely has a shorter final drive which helps acceleration but this means the motors run faster at highway speeds = increased consumption. I suspect most buyers of the i4 M50 wouldn't be hypermiling their cars anyhow.

    @grahamsalmons2027 Рік тому +3

    Brilliant comparison very useful. I can see also the effect of the cold temps on the range, around 25% reduction which is interesting.
    Although the M50 looks similar to the 40 I wonder whether aerodynamically it is different, providing more cooling for example, to manage the phenomenal power output. Additionally of course the weight is up, but then for 200Kg extra I wouldn’t expect such a big difference.

    • @jadziadax8658
      @jadziadax8658 Рік тому

      No. But the car is somewhat heavier, the aero is slightly worse for more cooling, the wheels are slightly worse, all this adds up quite a bit. Also, I'm wondering how much the ECO PRO mode would help. Maybe it runs on a single motor then?

  • @OlavAlexanderMjelde

    This once again shows why you should always get the performance models with AWD, if you can afford it.
    While RWD models go slightly further per charge, you have more fun in the performance models.
    AWD also gives way better accelleration and safer driving on wet or icy roads.
    If you can go slightly further with RWD I would also counter this: regen will be better on AWD, especially in winter! And you might also save on tire wear, as you can regen on both axles!
    The few extra kilometers in the RWD models do just mean some few extra minutes at the charger :-) But you will have more smiles with performance models!

  • @hotrod182
    @hotrod182 Рік тому +2

    Since you were just cruising, you should have put it in eco pro mode. If the indicated range goes up, then it will be more efficient to stay in that mode. Comfort mode is just that. Maintaining climate control, etc...in the most comfortable mode without regard to range /efficiency. You will generally not notice any degradation by going into eco pro mode anyways when doing a range test.

    I think the motors in this new bmw lineup is a type of synchronous ac motors, with external excitation. This simply means that instead of permanent magnets you have electromagnets in the rotor, similar to reno zoe.
    Efficiency wise they should be somewhere inbetween induction and pm ac motors. They should allow completely freewheeled operation when not powered, similar to induction motors.

      Motortrend did a "mini dive" on this and BMW says they've designed a special sealed enclosure for the brushes and commutator to minimize dust contamination and offer some degree of longevity (we'll see how that goes). the upside being higher power, better heat management, and no reliance on China as a source for Rare Earth elements. for the record Motortrend was discussing the drive unit in the iX SUV (with no mention of the sedan) but the same tech is likely what's in the i4.

    • @juiceofsapho
      @juiceofsapho Рік тому

      To clarify, the excitation power to the rotor is not supplied by the commutator, but by using the two slip rings, which have smooth surface. This means that the rate od wear of the brushes should be drastically lower compared to brushed dc motors. I would not be suprised if they last throughout the life of the vehicle.
      This external excitation does mean you need a separate inverter and controller for the rotor field, although of much lower power compared to the main inverter.

    The M50 can "turn off" the front motor but because it is still physically connected, it's still adding rotating mass even if it isn't causing drag because it is off.
