what I do when I'm in a pinch with no mixing can is I use the measuring cup and dump it in the tank BEFORE filling up at the pump, this way at least I can hope that the pressure and flow of gas from the pump will mix around the oil just enough. Either that or I'll try to find a large empty water bottle and mix a full bottle of gas with oil then pump the rest straight from the pump. I almost always ride with a small ready to mix sized bottle of oil, but I don't always carry a gas can, so this method of pressure mixing at the pump has saved me a few times. So if you don't have a mixing can, be sure to dump in your oil before filling with the pump! I hope this tip helps someone!
What you say makes sense regarding the oils of today compared with the oils of the 1950s. I had a 1957 VW, handbook saying chassis grease every 750km. Which I did for a while. Until someone pointed out that modern grease is so sticky that every 12 months would be plenty for a hobby car. My dad had a 1957 HMW moped from new - 1/3 pint SAE30 per imp gal. Same bike today would love the leaner ratio - and leave a barely perceptible haze behind it rather than the smokescreen of yore! Cheers; Col, NZ.
I've used the same cheap Castro 2-stroke oil in my Yamaha Zuma that the previous owner used. When I pulled it apart to put on my big bore kit, I was amazed how smooth & shiny the cylinder and piston was. No real need for a high-priced oil. 😜🛵🛵
I was just worried that he didnt have enough oil, i would rather have slightly too much than too little, its the main lubricant of the bigend and bore so i didnt want travis to kill his machine. I had one when i was 16 and really enjoyed the machine, i like to see other people winning :-)
I run 20:1 on my Moby, with the choke on the bike becomes a mobile smoke machine :P I know a guy who bought a Honda Melody brand-new, which suffered an oil pump failure a few years ago. He re-built it, and still has it.
Perhaps this is a difference in US/UK models, but the original 1978 stickers on my Puch Maxi actually recommend mixing 50:1, which is what I mix. Interesting point about the carb jets, I could definitely see that being true for a more complex 2 stoke motorcycle carb, but Garelli and Tomos both use the Dellorto 14:12 both with and without injection, same goes with the bing for Puch models that had oil injection. Thanks for your comment, I tried to be pretty neutral in the video, debate is good!
When i was 17 with a puch maxi-n i used mostly filterate 2stroke oil, the shot went into the tank that was on reserve!, petrol was added and i would shake the bike like a mad man :-) Also a shake before each time i started the bike, bike was shaking not me lol. 25:1 was the puch standard, 2star petrol was the norm, but later you could only get 4star so there is an unknown variable for you :-) The crank and phospher bronze little end bearings do need plenty of oil, i would not risk it!!
One of the tenements of physics is that things run downhill. I think that is called the law of entropy. Thus add the oil first. What is the dealio, early Puch tanks called for SAE 20-30, no detergents? Why not get a 50 cc syringe with a blunt needle? It would make measurement far more consistent? Just saying...
pt2, I do understand your logic but oil is the part the engine really needs and the additives just dont matter with a puch, 50:1 is just asking for bearing death. Long daily runs are the killer so beware. Two strokes do smoke, thats there nature. Newer autolube systems/bikes are a world away from the puch, and putting oil in a tank with carb jets designed for thin petrol only would be an emergency choice for me. Call me an old fogie if you like :-) but ive never had an engine fail.
Most 2 cycle engines say do not mix in the tank. Always in a can! I only tank mix in an emergency. I put oil in then gas , then rock bike back and forth and side to side vigorously.
I am using a 2 stroke 66cc motor kit they say for break in and it varies but from 16 to 18 to 1 then after break in 20:1 this seems way off what your using aren't 2 stroke engines basically the same? And if so why would we have to mix so much richer then a regular moped? If you don't know that's fine, Just some questions that came up as I was watching. I haven't even gotten to ride since I installed my motor kit it's brand new sitting over there begging me to ride her but the snow outside is deep and it's to damn cold, maybe this weekend after the cold spell breaks we might get some bare road, so I can go for one of the 30 min break in rides.
Can I do my points and timing on my 1980 malaguti commuter, like you did your PUCH here in the other video? I can hardly see the points in the flywheel, but can try and do them ( my manual says 0.5 to 0.6mm on the points, and 2.0 to 2.5mm BTDC on the timing ) anyway. I have my orange malaguti that looks like your white one your "summer project" video. I too mixed 50 to 1 ( 2.6oz per gallon ) per the decal on my tank. Of course did the 20/1 for 300 miles. Thanks for your advice Travis, Daniel
Guys I have a 1977 puch maxi . What is that piece that fits on the end of the spark plug? It has a black cable that runs up to this junction box thing. But mine is broken and I need to order a new part but I don’t know what it is called
is it bad to mix up a gas can with say 3 gallons of gas and 7-9 onces of 2 stroke oil (valvoline) then let it sit till im ready to refill my tank? ('76 batavus VA)
I have a 1987 honda elite . Im thinking about pre mixing bc im having issues with the oil not mixing do you think this would apply to your bike of a ratio 50:1 think it would be alright to use the same ratio ? Or what ratio would i use ?
Tomos oil injection sucks so bad that my first new Tomos moped didn't even make it home before seizing. It's made out of kinked up fish tank hose, and the oil tank vent is in the oil tank cap, where it gets plugged when you sit on the seat. It's so bad that I doubt anyone ever used it for more than a week without seizing their engine. The ONLY way to properly premix oil/gas is in a container, like a gas can. Pour both in, and shake it good. THEN pour the mix in the tank. DO NOT try to mix in the tank. First of all, unless the tank is completely empty, you have no idea how much premix is already in the tank, so you don't know how much oil to put in. Second, you have no idea whether oil poured directly into the tank will be mixed properly. I like to use clear or see through containers to premix in, no matter what I may carry extra premix in. I mix at 40:1 for all moped brands, for stock engines.
yes, get ethanol free if possible. if not then get what they have. Just don't leave fuel sitting up too long in your carburetor. You can buy a qt of 2 cycle oil at the zone or advance for about 6$. Penzoil, havoline, brands like that work great. 4 oz per gal is 32:1. as long as you use at least 3 oz per gal, you should be fine.
@@eminiscalperpro9729 Is the 1 part representing one gallon? I am trying to understand how the ratios work and what the numbers represent. So i know what mixture i need to use in my weed wacker and my moped. Thank you
I just got a 1980 batavus starflite. It runs but the guy I got it off of says it take regular gas and I can't find anywhere to put oil. Is it a 2 cycle? I think it has to be but he says no. Thanks
+Scotty mcfeeter Yikes, I feel bad for your piston, cylinder, crank bearings, etc if someone was running straight gas through that engine. +TravisTutorial If you notice decreased performance, the easy culprit might be low compression due to ruined rings, scored piston, damaged cylinder walls, etc. I can't believe the previous owner wouldn't check, I was able to find the answer in about 2 minutes of googling...
+TravisTutorial Found another cool vintage advertisement that indicates both M-48 and 2 stroke for starflite models: www.myronsmopeds.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Batavus-1978-Brochure-p6-7.jpg
@Exploring With Devin Good idea about the vinegar but i dont have a high pressure washer. What i ended doing was i bought evaporust and that removed the rust from the tank and i just rinsed the tank with soapy water from the garden hose. But i do like the idea of the vinegar too. Thank you for the tip. Cheers

The bearings dont get much oil anyway so as i loved the hell out of my puch and didnt want to have to hone out a new phospher bronze bearing for the gudgin pin, i gave it the book values :-) Very enjoyable days :-)

Travis, You're a well-spoken guy in a world of flamewar warriors. Keep it classy.
Would you be so kind as to post a video of a newer system that takes oil the new way, instead of self mixing?
A good idea is to monitor your mix from the plug and exhaust to enable an educated adjustmant to the ratio.
i use racing repsol oil only on my mopeds 30:1 for my zundapp and 20:1 for my piaggio

50 to 1 is that too rich on oil?
Anyone know?

The old 20:1 is the old times when oil wasn't as good. Use 32:1 in almost all 2cycles. even if it calls for 50:1.
