i was amazed when you said the way of the wolf. I used Jordan Belfort's straight line persuasion...and in retrospect, I was a bartender when I took the course, and I'm a mid 6 figure salesman today. I work at a call center and occasionally write copy for car dealerships looking to liquidate stocks or negotiate buybacks. Everything that's mentioned here happens in text form - except I'm not the one who gets to pull the trigger on any ill-informed purchase someone might make once at the showroom. I set up the con, sort of hope for the customer's own sake that their finances line up enough for it to *not* be a con in the making - buybacks aren't so bad if you can handle payment deferrals for a car you no longer own but still have to clear installments for - and get them to feel greedy. Or, to be more precise, I get them to feel that there's a definite opportunity on offer, even if changing from a 2018 to a 2020 doesn't necessarily mean you're getting marked design improvements. It all depends on the dealership I happen to be working for on any particular week, and its overall demographics. There's a certain deal you can sell to Audi customers in high-income neighbourhoods that'll just come across as highway robbery to Mr. and Mrs. Honda Civic. You'd think there's market analytics involved, but it mostly boils down to math averages seeing as people like big, round, easy-to-remember rebates over anything that's statistically accurate. If I say you could get the new Hyundai Venue at, say, 0.9% interest, I have to sweeten the pot with something that seasonally fits, even though it's not a reasonable deal in any shape or form. Say, toss in some free winter tires three weeks after everyone's complied with their local tire-change regulations - only they're not exactly free, they're just calculated in the total price. If I've been asked to try and gin up a bunch of new arrivals, I can present it as the "Official Launch Event" for a lineup, and get dealership coordinators to spring for cheap champagne and a couple catered sandwich trays. High-income neighbourhoods are especially receptive to that particular approach. The actual guest might not bite, but their partner might... In my experience, if your spouse has a yen for a particular car, I've got you locked in. Not you, yourself - your spouse or your S.O. That's all any salesman needs, really.
