***** It's absolutely ridiculous that they forgot that one, even though it's one of the most obvious ones, and yet they managed to successfully mention more obscure ones like the underdeveloped secondary eyelid and the infantile super-handgrip (and foot-grip). O__O
Daniel Bostic Outer ear=cartilage (elastic to be specific). Did you mean the ossicles? inner ear has 3 very useful bones for hearing, the malleus, incus, and stapes.
+Sprango It doesn't PRODUCE the bacteria, it acts as a reservoir, and does still serve a purpose. If, for instance, you have a really bad bout of diarrhea, your body flushes out your intestinal tract, good and bad bacteria alike...after this, your can spring back into good digestive health much faster with your appendix acting as a safe haven for all the good gut bacteria.
I don't think you guys properly demonstrated that mattress. You should have rolled around on it together, pinned each other down, made out a little ok bye
+Luke Gibson They wouldn't help fully in a staring contest. Blinking makes your eyelids blow away tiny dust particles. the flaps only moisturize the eyes
Can you PLEASE do an ASAPThought blooper reel every now and then? You two are hilarious and fun on camera anyway so I would be eager to see what the mess-ups look like :)
ehrmaygah! i didnt know i had nipples or goosebumps or ears! are goosebumps even body parts?? What about the grasping reflex thing! that's not a body part! :I
It’s not really the goosebumps but the arrector pilli. They are tiny muscles attached to your hairs which are the muscles that contract to create goosebumps.
lies. goosebumps are when it's that time for the geese to fly off and migrate to a different person. so the bumps in your skin are the little geese waiting to break out. this is an actual fact.
+AkyraTheWolf No, since trans people are only the sex they want to be in that their genitalia and secondary sex traits match. If they had a Y chromosome they would be male in every sense of the word. Hopefully we can someday reach the point where we can change X chromosomes to Y chromosomes, and so no one has to be trans but can be the sex they want to be.
+Paul Kearschner How would that happen? Your mother has two X chromosomes, and every male has a mother that gave him a copy of one. There's just the anomaly of xyy.
What about after when you're actually conscious? People said you don't feel hungry (even after you haven't eaten in like xx hours) so you end up starving yourself and even needing to puke..
Hi guys! I just wanted to point out that ears are not useless at all, they actually conduct, condition and amplify sound from our sorroundings so we can hear things clearly and adequatly. I love your videos!
I was waiting for the long palmar muscle, it would have been interesting to talk about it because it's considered as a human relic, absent at about 14% of the population and useful if you need some tendon during a surgery:D
To be honest: AsapThought is in my humble opinion better than AsapSCIENCE. You guys have a lot of charisma and seeing you talk about stuff is much more interesting than seeing the drawings. Anyways, just wanted to give thumbs up from Poland ;) Keep up the good work!
I learned in anatomy that goosebumps are a way to keep you warm because the pili muscle contracts making your hair stand up. when muscles move, you feel warmer
we study in music production classes that the shapes within the ear and the ear itself are used to better filter the sounds to the range of the human voice, it's called the Fletcher-Munson curve
I'm pretty sure I read at some point that the appendix served for something other than the digestion of grass, I think it was something to do with the immune system but I can't quite remember
Whenever I remember that you guys are Canadian, I think "Yeah, Canada!" It's cool that you got to do the Olympic body science stuff on CBC, it was pretty interesting.
Wouldn't: "7 Useless body parts you didn't know why you had" be a better title? English is nor my first language, but to me it seems weird, because I knew about all those things, although not necessarily about why I had them. The second eyelid is very interesting, never thought of that one.
I thought it was proven that goosebumps isn't bumps, but the skin that contracts everywhere but where the hair is. And I have also read somewhere that it is to keep us warmer or something like that, but I don't know.. Great video btw! More like these :D
I was waiting for you to say the appendix and then I'd come to the comments to correct you, but I think you're updated on the maybe not so vestigial thing. Dang you updated scientific divulgators!
The third eyelid is actually still useful for a lot of mammals as part of the immunesystem. It has tiny lymphnodes on it that protect the eye from bacteria.
your appendix!! apparently it was to help digest grass when earlier humans ate it but now we don't really eat grass anymore (unless you are a small child that likes to chew everything) it's pretty much useless
Goosebumps are kinda useful to me, I get cold really easily so it makes me warm. It's helpful when a room is extremely cold and I'm like testing, but not that much. xD
The plica seluminaris actually has an use, but its not really important. You know when your eye is red after doing something with it, yep, it can also be red when your eyes are red
Palmaris Longus would have been a good one to mention. Its the equivalent to what would have been the Achilles tendon in the forearm. The tendon sits over the transverse ligament and people are starting to be born without it. If you keep your fingers out stretched and then bring your thumb close to your finger tips; look to see if a tendon significantly pops out then congratulations, you have a palmaris longus.. if not... congratulations you're 'more evolved'
+Katharine Grimo For anyone not sure if they have it, it's the little thing in the middle of your wrist, under the hand. Right where most people can see some veins very clearly.
what's funny, is i can wiggle my ears, and use that to try and 'channel sound' which somehow helpsme hear things better... i dont really get it myself, but i love it.
For anyone wondering why we have an appendix, it's because they were for helping with digestion of nuts and/or similar types of foods, I believe. Now that humans don't eat nuts as often, it's purpose seems unnecessary to many.
Goosebumps are necessary because when the hair stands up on end when cold, it creates a fluffy layer of warmth on the skin aaaand the tailbone is definitely necessary, not when we used to have tails, it is there to protective our backsides and help up sit. Do your research people, don't just believe everything you see or hear.
I learned, while studying aesthetics, that goose bumps helped warm the body or at least retain heat... It is very possibly wrong as I have found many inconsistencies in my text.
The pain of wisdom teeth coming through and we don't even need them! I couldn't move with the bottom two. Top ones haven't come through yet. I'm dreading it!
I didn't read through the comments to see if anybody else knew this interesting little tidbit and posted it, but although what you stated about males having nipples was partially true, not all of it was. Yes, all human babies start out as females in the womb before the Y chromosome comes in and is like HAHA JUST KIDDING, YOU'RE A MAN NOW!!! But male nipples actually have a use that many people are unaware of. I am not totally sure if this applies to all males, but I would assume it does. Much like females, men can produce breast milk. Many people believe that women can only lactate when pregnant, but really, through extensive breast and nipple stimulation, they can lactate at any time. This is also true for men, although the stimulation is likely much more extensive for them due to the fact that men and women have different hormonal and chemical make-ups.
The grab on reflex might not be as useless as you think. It saved my little sister from falling down of jhoola(a swing you can sleep on). She was wiggling and somehow just fell over but then grabbed on to the ropes. She stayed like that for a few minutes(i am not sure about the time. I was in the kitchen and she was crying for a while). There you go! It can save your life.
Every time I have headphones on and someone talks to me I feel my ears move! 😂 I've moved my ears once 5 months ago and now they just move by themselves every time I hear something loud😂
I was told by my dentist long ago that I needed my wisdom teeth removed... didn't do it. I still have a full skull of teeth, and I haven't had any problems.
What I also don't get about goosebumps is that we get them when we're cold and the goosebumps increase the skin's surface area which allows more heat to escape making us even colder. WHY?!!
How about your appendix? Apparently, it used to be necessary because it could digest seeds and stuff because we would eat them with fruits or whatever.
I just thought I would say that the title of this video is a little misleading as most of these body parts (and reflex in the case of goosebumps) have an important part to play in correct functioning of the body; the tailbone (coccyx) for example is an attachment point for many important muscles and also plays a role in weight bearing.
I seriously sat the whole video waiting for the apendix.. :p
Haha me too
yah same lol
Arvidius ツ by that token the coccyx(adult tail remnant) is also useful, it is the attachment point for a lot of muscles.
NeilSonOfNorbert I guess it could be argued that the muscles could be attached differently?
***** It's absolutely ridiculous that they forgot that one, even though it's one of the most obvious ones, and yet they managed to successfully mention more obscure ones like the underdeveloped secondary eyelid and the infantile super-handgrip (and foot-grip). O__O

im pretty sure i knew i had ears
Emma Downey No, you didn't. You didn't know that men had nipples, either ^__^
They didn't say your whole ear but the bones in there that can move it around.
Daniel Bostic Outer ear=cartilage (elastic to be specific). Did you mean the ossicles? inner ear has 3 very useful bones for hearing, the malleus, incus, and stapes.
farjacko I didn't mean the inner ear, I meant the parts around it which used to move your ears.
Daniel Bostic
There are no bones of the outer ear, people wiggle their ears with the auricular muscles located around the ear.
Are they a couple because I totally ship it
Yes they are! They are so adorable!!! Lol
Ew 😂
what is so "Ew" about this perfect couple ? .v.
+The Gray's Gaming nothings wrong with it I just said I ship it lol
It's not you. it's the one that said ew
What about the brain? That's vestigial. We don't use it anymore. :P
Lol
Zoe Elizabeth Nightingale yup😂😂
PFFFFTT
lol
No thoughts head empty
What about your appendix? We don't use that anymore.
Appendix produces useful bacteria for our immunity.
Ольга Маргарит But you can get it removed and usually your not affected in any way so its pretty much useless.
+Sprango Sure. But in early childhood it matters.
Ольга Маргарит Interesting. I never knew that.
Has anyone noticed how utterly STUNNING Greg's eyes are!? It's rimmed dark Aqua green and filled with lightish green. 😍😍😱
+Smart Scientist I have the exact same colour eyes as him!
+CatLoverForever!!! CatLoverForever!!! Really? 😃 You and Greg have some pretty eyes!
Wait... So I could've had 3 eye lids and a tail? That would've been so cool!!

You also have built in goggles for swimming :D
Luke Gibson Who would have a staring contest if we did have them??
+Luke Gibson Let's all hope there's a remote village of aquatic humans who still have them, that way we can slowly breed them back into our genepool.
+Luke Gibson They wouldn't help fully in a staring contest. Blinking makes your eyelids blow away tiny dust particles. the flaps only moisturize the eyes

I was thinking about that too

My first under 301 club appearance! Hell yeah!
humans are evolving and new children don't have wisdom teeth anymore...
Lauren Stampycatfan wait. really? where did u see that?
True. My brother doesn't have them.
Well around 10% of all babies don't have wisdom teeth, or that was what my dentice told me once
I'm 9,have a few adult teeth and wisdom teeth are starting to come out.
Keyon Rosen Well it's early for your wisdomsteeth to come out but it's normal you have some adult teeth when you're 9
Ahhh this is so weird I'm learning about Evolution in biology right now and I just did an essay on vestigial traits (: glad I knew most of these
Who does not know they have tailbone or nipples? Or, goosebumps and wisdom teeth for that matter. Or some people don't realize they are useless?
Oddly worded title then imo. And afaik most of these are still commonly known as useless bodyparts.

This should be body parts that you didn't know were useless, not that you didn't know you had. Oh wait I didn't know males had nipples never mind.
As a student who's about to move out for college, this sponsor came in at just the right time!
Yey! I'm less evolved 😊👂
I'm pretty sure I read at some point that the appendix served for something other than the digestion of grass, I think it was something to do with the immune system but I can't quite remember
It's a debated thing, but basically it's believed to house bacteria that help keep your colon healthy.
Ah yes, that must be it, thanks
What about the weenis? (idk if that's the correct spelling) the flab of skin on your elbow
That's used so you can actually bend your arms without pulling the skin uncomfortably and/or causing wounds.
Lazypig and it's definitely not called your weenis
Make up Geek I'm pretty sure it is... If it's not that what is it then?
It is weenis
My mother is a nurse she's said there is not anything on the body named a weenis

For anyone wondering why we have an appendix, it's because they were for helping with digestion of nuts and/or similar types of foods, I believe. Now that humans don't eat nuts as often, it's purpose seems unnecessary to many.

The tailbone actually is an important part of the spine as it is used for specific tendons for movement.
Don't forget the appendix, the one that was something like a help to the stomach and the gastrointestinal tract.
Goosebumps are actually used because when you get cold, it activates in your body as a blanket.
