I am Tom Willett. I was Tom in this series. It is great to see the pilot again. The cast was fabulous to be with for the four seasons. The entire crew and production company was all first class. We did that at Paramount. This pilot was originally written for the UK where the series began. We worked on this from 1988 until 1992. I wish they would release this on DVD. Thanks for posting this one.
When my dad passed away in 1990 I temporarily moved back to my parents house in Amsterdam because my mum was very depressed. At that time this series just came out in The Netherlands. We both loved watching it because it gave us some comfort.
The same but with my grandfather me and him used to live together we liked to watch westerns like the rifle man well in 2017 he died of cancer that’s when I was left in despair realizing i lost my best friend. That’s when I watch this the characters are all have something in common their all dealing with loss .
I remember this theme song back from when I was a kid. I was too young to understand what the show was about, but I certainly remember television being an evening event at my home... nowadays, I'm not sure what it is. Great to finally see an episode---and realize that it's true that television from the 80s and early 90s really was a lot better than it is today.
I use to watch this show. Brings back so many memories. I was 2 years out of HS, still living at home, working my first real job at a plastics factory in a tiny ass town.
I wish they would release the DVD, too! I can't believe the rapport the cast had in this pilot -- it's great to see it again! Thanks for posting the video -- and thanks for commenting, Tom! So fun!
I have been looking for this for years! This is one of the first sitcoms I ever remember actually watching when I was really little (like when I was 3/4 back in 1991.) THANK YOU! I have not seen the show in years. I really really loved Kirk (Jere Burns' character) when I was watching back then.
Ironic that I'm in AA now and the AA mix-up scene is funnier to me! I always loved this sitcom. Kirk is definitely my favorite character,! He was like Dan Fielding's(night Court) younger brother... LOL!
"Were there any huh... sexual problems...?" Classic line. My brain remembered this, her accent and everyone's faces like old friends after 32 years away! Such a warm and fuzzy feeling...
This was 1 of My Favorite Television Shows ever from The 80's.John was a pretty Decent Wholesome Guy Who just had a Bad Break.Ralph was Funny and Quirky. But that Damn Kirk was a Card lol😎👍🏾
This show was one way I used to forget..my Mom had cancer and I lived with her ..she died in 91 and I'd get lost in TV shows to get away from my troubles..I loved this show...it made me laugh and I thought it should go on forever.
Wow! I came across a fragrance named 'Dear John' and it made me think back to this show so i just had to look it up! I remember my parents watching this! I remember the opening song! I was probably 8, 9 years old. Bittersweet. This made me miss my parents. RIP mom and dad.
My ex-brother-in-law, Jeff Ackerman, worked on the set. He also worked on the set of "Cheers" and my sister and Jeff were friends with Kelsey Grammar and Ted Danson. I remember getting the call from them telling me this pilot was about to air and this was going to be a winner (more than likely) and it was. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!
In the credits section at the end they list the theme song "Dear John" as being written by John Sullivan. John Sullivan wrote the original UK series of Dear John on which the US version is closely based. John Sullivan wrote many classic and still much loved British sit coms. Including Citizen Smith, Just Good Friends and one of the UKs best loved comedy programmes "Only Fools and Horses". John Sullivan was a London born cockney of an English mother and Irish father. He died aged 61.
This takes me back. I was 8 years old when this show premiered. Yes I was watching more than just cartoons at that age. Its not like it is now. I you can actually watch cartoons 24 hours a day now.
I laughed a lot at this! I know I saw this originally as i clearly remember the characters. Loved the UK version too, this has a very 'Cheers' feel to it.
Oh my goodness I came upon This due to a mention by Featureman Tom, who has his own UA-cam channel and had been an actor in this sitcom. Had forgotten about this but then remembered seeing this after watching the pilot show here. How I miss the days when sitcoms were intelligent and uniquely funny.
Underrated show! I jumped in on it I believe the middle of the first season and stayed true to it until that awful last season but overall was a good show. No Taxi (which it clearly was trying to re-create) but it was good.
I remember watcging tjis with my dad I was hooked because of theme song and would sing along I was 8 when I first watched with my dad. I was sad when his wife left and he was all alone lol
I was 15 when this aired. I'm now 51. I didn't remember this show but I do remember "the name is Kirk" for some reason. It's why i watched this video (trying to remember). It pops in my mind from time to time.
THIS IS AN NBC SITCOM THAT I THOUGHT I’D NEVER SEE AGAIN: DEAR JOHN STARRING JUDD HIRSCH. ( 1989-93 ). Based on a similar series from the BBC created by JOHN SULLIVAN. THURSDAY NIGHT AT 9:30 PM. EVEN I GET CHOKED UP BY THE OPENING THEME SONG: DEAR JOHN. Kenneth Huang. 3/22/24.
0:16 such excellent acting in that reaction. It shows shock being instantly replaced with an overwhelming feelings, followed with a "ah s*it" blank look
Watching Breaking Bad for the first time when Jesse's counselor shows up I was like "that's Kirk!" I couldn't remember what show he was from but I knew sure remembered Kirk.
I haven't seen this in years!! I forgot that Louise would frequently say, "Were there any sexual problems?" LOL!!! That was a great show with a great cast.

I love the Kirk character too! He’s hilarious;) 😂
I miss this and shows like it from this era. Great times!
Ahhh yes....filmed before a live studio audience . you don't hear that anymore.
dear John is one sitcom that really love especially the intro song
this is why I started watching this show again, just a week ago. i was singing the song, and i had to hear it!
The show would've been good too if it was "Dear Tom" -Watermelon Student

Ironic that I'm in AA now and the AA mix-up scene is funnier to me! I always loved this sitcom. Kirk is definitely my favorite character,! He was like Dan Fielding's(night Court) younger brother... LOL!
Best of luck to you. ❤️
"Were there any huh... sexual problems...?"
Classic line. My brain remembered this, her accent and everyone's faces like old friends after 32 years away! Such a warm and fuzzy feeling...
Omg i remember this from when i was a kid. Its even better now that i know Featureman himself was in it.
Featureman likes little boys. Google willet vs state 1978

Google willet vs state 1978
I've never been as excited to see a minor actor/extra as I was when Featureman walked in. He was so handsome, and now he's cute.
I used to watch this show by myself when I was 6 years old. I was the kid in The Cable Guy
Is there a sequel called Dear Hank? Asking for a podcast.
This show was one way I used to forget..my Mom had cancer and I lived with her ..she died in 91 and I'd get lost in TV shows to get away from my troubles..I loved this show...it made me laugh and I thought it should go on forever.
I love this show so much. I miss those days.
I remember this show when I was in jr.high awesome show Tom thank you love your UA-cam channel ❤😆
I loved this show as a kid. I got so excited when I saw it here! Thanks for sharing!!
I loved this show. I was young but I really loved it. Glad I found it again
OH My. I love this. Thanks for this.
I was a young adult when this show aired and the only thing I remember was the amazing intro song and the lady with the accent, lol.
Wow! I came across a fragrance named 'Dear John' and it made me think back to this show so i just had to look it up! I remember my parents watching this! I remember the opening song! I was probably 8, 9 years old. Bittersweet. This made me miss my parents. RIP mom and dad.
I also recall the British version with Ralph Bates. An incredibly good series. They don't make them like this anymore!
Thank you for posting it.
Loved this show as a lil girl ❤️ glad to see it's on here for free!
Why this show was never a major hit is beyond me.
After this classic pilot (one of the best I've seen) the quality went downhill fast
I loved this show back in the day. Kirk was a sleaze and he became one of my favorites. Billie Bird was hilarious.
I would say A Legend is Born....but he was already a Legend. You know who i'm talking about!
I miss this show and thought that I'll type it in and see if it's on here. Thanx so much
Thanks for uploading this show.
I love this show I would wait until my mom would fall asleep and get up and watch this with the volume low
Late actress Billie Bird sits in the back of the meeting and the one line she says during the show is hilarious!

But why isn't there a spinoff show called Dear Hank?
i love both the UK & USA versions.Superb casting & scripts

The director of this pilot is the of the creators and writers of the great cheers(1982-1983)also like this sitcom filmed at paramount studios.
Correction: cheers(september 30,1982-may 20,1993)
Thank you for this.I loved this show.
'Were there any sexual problems?' the line that's been haunting me ever since I first saw this episode back in spring of 1989.
Of course not..
Kirk and his Miata, dear John marked my childhood 😂
She broke his heart and made him move 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Shady!
Kirk is the BEST!!!
One of the best comedies ever. Love it.
I only ever saw the UK version and it's great to see this one. The song is the same and so are the characters.
Watched this when it was new and loved both the actors and writers.
this show was the best!
Who were sent here by dear Hank and John?
Kirk is one of the best characters.
Tom, thanks for sharing these links on Facebook!
This used to air before Murphy Brown and Twin Peaks in my country back in the early 90s.
Oh good times
Was it hairspray or a blow dryer that Kirk would do with his hair? That total slapstick in the middle of cerebral humor 😅
Hank and John sent me.
I loved this series. Watched it every week. Just noticed the similarities of the school set ... was it also Welcome Back, Kotter's?
Finally on UA-cam!!! Thanks for posting them!
I love the VHS quality, it evoke a sense of nostalgia 😂
I’ve got a massive crush on Harry Groener, which has brought me to this series. The support group sitcom frame is so twee and I love it. Thanks!
The old guy's turn to tell about himself: "GREETINGS food fans!..."
Damn did I love this show...thanks so much for the uploads!
Hello six to ten intensely curious and/or bored Dear Hank and John listeners
Forces TV is repeating the British version from this evening.

I love the melancholy in the intro song
Underrated show! I jumped in on it I believe the middle of the first season and stayed true to it until that awful last season but overall was a good show. No Taxi (which it clearly was trying to re-create) but it was good.
I was a kid who loved this show

I was 15 when this aired. I'm now 51. I didn't remember this show but I do remember "the name is Kirk" for some reason. It's why i watched this video (trying to remember). It pops in my mind from time to time.
Never knew this excisist till now only ever seen the English version. the pilot episode was great I'm sure the rest of the seasons are just as good
Loved the british version starring the late Ralph Bates, shame no UK channel have repeated it in recent years.
THIS IS AN NBC SITCOM THAT I THOUGHT I’D NEVER SEE AGAIN: DEAR JOHN STARRING JUDD HIRSCH. ( 1989-93 ). Based on a similar series from the BBC created by JOHN SULLIVAN. THURSDAY NIGHT AT 9:30 PM.

wow blast from the past. I watched this when it was new and the theme song is etched into my brain

The tune still hasn't "left me!" 😎😜🚪
I haven't seen this show since it was first-run but I definitely remember Kirk.
Same lol
Watching Breaking Bad for the first time when Jesse's counselor shows up I was like "that's Kirk!" I couldn't remember what show he was from but I knew sure remembered Kirk.
