    This is EXACTLY what I thought about Kingdom Hearts 1 when I first played it.
    Even down to the streetlights in Traverse Town.
    I loved how an original setting that is designed to be like Disney is introduced by Final Fantasy characters too.

    Okay, seriously: Am I the only one who thinks that Destiny Islands was perfectly fine? Like I'm hearing a lot of complaints about it being too long, but I thought it was a fine length? Hell, I'd actually have been fine with at least one more day to get to know the main trio because it just kinda comes off as awkward teenage angst and tension if anything. I honestly didn't have a problem with the length of Destiny Islands aside from that.
    (Great discussion video, by the way! You really know your stuff and I'm more than happy to be a subscriber!)

      @FrustratedJacob  7 років тому +3

      I personally don't mind the length, but my personal feelings aren't exactly the best judgement in this case. I would like it to be a bit longer, because I already know that I like these characters and would like to see more of them. But if I was a fresh player, who just picked this game up and I'd been staring at these anime kids for a couple hours, wondering when the Disney folks the box art had promised me were going to show up, then I might have been a bit annoyed by the length.
      It's also a matter of direction and purpose. Until the letter from Mickey you don't have any real grasp on what the story is, and until Destiny Islands gets destroyed you don't have an understanding of the scope or severity of the threat. You kind of need that to engage people, and while you don't always need to front-load that kind of stuff, it's especially important for it to come early on in video games, since you're tasking the player with interacting with your world, and if they don't understand what their long-term goals are, then they will have a harder time engaging with the story or the gameplay.

    • @TallManVanitas
      @TallManVanitas 7 років тому

      That's fair. I always did enjoy the first scene of Disney Castle when I was younger, and heck, the Disney aspect was what drew me into getting the game in the first place. I guess I'm right there with you where my personal feelings shouldn't interfere with the game as is, but I still do feel I was one of the only people who was fine with Destiny Islands' length as is. (You're right in the video too saying that those people hate the intro to KH2, which I can remember getting so frustrated haha.)

    As imperfect as the first entry is, it at least served as a respectable starting point for this series. The Disney worlds were used creatively enough, gameplay was solid, and even Kairi had solid potential as a character.

    Ansem's voice is rad.
    I've always loved your commentary on villains. Maleficent and Pete are annoying in 2. Sora doesn't have reason to play cat and mouse with XIII, but they're evil and he's good, so he must. Emotional ties between characters are always good-the side thing with Axel's broken Roxas heart was better. #writingproblems
    Also, I always felt Traverse Town to be like Disney World in some ways. Love it. Miss it. Charming.

  • @zdbztumble5450
    @zdbztumble5450 5 років тому +2

    I've always loved the first Kingdom Hearts, but it wasn't until I watched your LP of it that a certain story point clicked for me. Because for years, I never liked Riku - I could recognize the technical merits of the way his story was written, but I just couldn't get over how quickly he turns against Sora. The way you worded the dichotomy between those two - that Riku appears to be more mature but behaves childishly and selfishly, while Sora is more childlike but acts heroically and selflessly - finally put it into a perspective that I could fully feel and appreciate the character arc through. You've got a great set of LPs for this series here.
    And my biggest frustration with Kairi's limited role came when Sora told her to stay behind because she'd "be in the way." Cut to Hollow Bastion, where the six Princesses of Heart - out of seven - are straining to keep the darkness in check. If only there was one additional, fresh and rested member who could've turned up to add her power to the mix...and if only the others at Traverse Town were going to turn up in that scene by the end...

    I enjoyed this very much - I think there should be more people like you, who talk deeply about a game that is with no doubt a masterpiece and try to understand the whys of it being a masterpiece. Maybe I enjoy it, because I do that myself as well for any game/book/story that is as good and immersive. As put in your words: "Good stories are things that happen when you care about what happens."
    There should be more channels like yours! :)

    If you talked to Aerith as you progressed throughout the game she gives a surprising amount of insight about Ansem. She has a line saying something like "The people had stories about Ansem fighting off the Heartless so they could escape. But that doesn't make sense since he was the one that caused all this." Already trying to hint Ansem is not all what he seems to be and showing he might not be the best source of information. Very obscure niche lore but it's interesting how they built up Ansem as essentially two separate characters in the the very first game alone before they even added the Final Mix stuff. So many things American and English audiences miss throughout the years simply because of the assumption it's trying to be a simple narrative. I'm sorry but no "Simple and Clean" story will have you have to fight every single secret boss in order to keep up. That's absurd levels of dedication for any story. Then there's the fact players straight up don't read them as they get them. Losing so much context for why characters are doing and saying things in the next cutscene. They don't talk much about Ansem but that's because every single world gave you more information about this mysterious man. Every single Disney villain had an Ansem Report which was supposed to imply that's how Malificent started her whole plan. She found a bunch of pages of Ansems Reports and which is why she's so knowledgeable about the Keyblade despite having zero prior knowledge. The subtle retcon was that she knew about Keyblades directly from Xehanort during Birth by Sleep but it's pretty inconsequential as she's ultimately just a Disney Villian.

    It was funny... when the first Kingdom Hearts came out, I was originally not interested in picking this game up. I didn't plan to buy it, I was thinking Final Fantasy meets Disney; I couldn't take that seriously. I grew up watching Disney, but at that point in my life I was more into anime, I was a high schooler who was in sports and most of my gaming revolved around sports and Japanese games like Gundam's G Generation series. So my sister bought the game and I thought I try it out and man I was wrong about the game. I ended up absolutely loving it. It was a nostalgia thing for Disney, but I really did like the story and felt really invested in its own original plot. I think my favorite point in the story came in Hollow Baston. I liked the design, gimmicks and the boss battles in this world the most. My least favorite was Monstro... I got lost way too many times.Also loved the voice acting, especially Ansem's. I was dissapointed in Ansem's voice change in KH2. I'll need to watch part to part 2 now.

    great video! What did you think about the Roxas segment at the beginning of KH2? A lot of people hated it, and so did I my first time around. When I replayed it though, it really quickly became my favorite part of the plot of the series. I enjoyed Roxas' and Organization XIII's story a lot more than I do Sora's story. Huge fan of 358/2 days as well

      +Future Hendrix Also in response to people's thought that KH has lost its charm: It's lost its "charm" because the fanbase that played it as kids has grown up. The first game is noticeably aimed at kids. The game's plot is simple, the tone is lighthearted, and its thematically juvenile (not that this is a bad thing in any way). I played it for the first time when I was like 10. KH2 came out a few years later when most of the kids who played the first one were teenagers, and it really shows in the new direction it takes. It's a lot more angsty than the first one was

    • @CampingforCool41
      @CampingforCool41 8 років тому +2

      Exactly. I like the complicated story, really the problem with KH2 was that the disney worlds, as they say, only followed along with the plot of the films. The felt like bland distractions, rather than self contained adventures. And even though the platforming in kh1 was rough, it had a feeling of exploration that the kh2 lost.

    haha^^ yeah i agree with jacob.. hope (and the others too..) could have been a greater character in ff 13. (not greater in what he does, because some people are just not as strong as others) i really could relate to him at some points (had a great loss, is insecure, wants to become stronger and clings to another person), but his character was not well elaborated. but this also counts for the other characters.. they all seem so lazily written.. or they just wanted to make them more simplistic? idk

    • @FrustratedJacob
      @FrustratedJacob  8 років тому

      To be completely honest, Hope isn't the best example of what I was talking about, but I was struggling to find another example and I had to work on other stuff, and I went with him. The point is that Hope, or other 'weak characters', actually FEEL as if they can't do anything. This mostly comes from their inability to make important decisions.
      One of the defining characteristics of a hero or protagonist, as opposed to other characters, is that they will make decisions that other characters either won't or can't. This is why 'Chosen One' narratives often feel weak. If the character didn't make a choice, then what really makes them a hero? Of course, 'Chosen One' characters can still make choices. Neo in The Matrix is very obviously presented with a choice, where he has to pick the Red Pill or the Blue Pill. He is given the choice to go back to his old life, or to leave it behind forever.
      Compare this, or any good protagonist, to Hope. All he does for the first chunk of the game is whine about how much he hates Snow for getting his mom killed. Well, why don't you do something about it already, Hope? You can argue that he wasn't around Snow for a while, but that's entirely the fault of the writer. The writer could have put them together, or written Hope in a different way. But he didn't. Instead, we just have to listen to Hope complain for hours and not take any action.
      Then, when he finally does meet up with Snow again, he still can't work up the courage to actually kill the man. Finally, after a horribly dragged out melodramatic conversation, Hope FINALLY draws a knife on Snow, lifts it up to deliver the killing blow, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand...
      They get interrupted by a missile from a robot or whatever. Then Hope does nothing for the rest of the game.
      What a hero.

      i get your point and yeah i totally agree with you.
      thats why i said they where lazily written. thats one of the bigger problems i have with 13.
      even though lightning is tough and the hero, she still seems kinda boring to me (that also applies to most of the other characters). there could have been so much more story, more interesting conversations, more development, more well written drama etc
      everything is so forgettable.
      well i think i got a bit carried away from the topic xD from -> stereo type weaklings to -> ff 13 bashing.
      well sorry for that
      (oh, ever watched or played ff 13-2? THAT is something i would call bad ;))

    Well, I disagree that 'every fanfiction ever' is just 'stuff that happens' and that you don't get invested. Really, I have read some seriously amazing fanfictions. Don't look down on them because of the bad rep. Sure, 99% is bad or mediocre at best, but that 1% can be bloody amazing.

    In other words, I think like a kid--mature kid. Good versus evil. Belief versus disbelief. Accepted versus loner. Accepting yourself. I understand archetypal feelings, but not anything that represents actual events. For actual events, you have to take by the hand. How was I supposed to know American Tale is symbolism of gangsters taking advantage of little kids and putting them in factories? I just watched a UA-cam video on that. I just know how Feivel feels being taken advantage of. That's it.
