the jump from PS1/Saturn/N64 fighters to these Dreamcast fighters (namely soul calibur and this) in '99 has got to be one of the most incredible jumps in graphics there ever was or will be.

The new textures on the chars look great, but I am not a fan of the new colors. DOA2's bright colors was its main appeal IMO
oversaturated graphics used stylistically is the dreamcast's calling card.
When you see that 1998 graphics still holds up today as being really beautiful, this shows how much Dreamcast was ahead of its time. It's a shame that SEGA wasn't able to have much success with it.
Was throwing on my PS2 a few Years ago on a CRT and was like:"Hmm, this Game does look amazing good!." haha
It was just such a massive leap forward. I couldn't believe most people waited almost 2 years for a PS2 when DC launched at a great low price with so many perfect looking/playing games. Right out of the gate the DC games were looking exactly like the best arcade games. The sports games especially looked so ridiculously real compared to anything before. PS1/Saturn/N64 sports games are a jagged mess in comparison. VF2 is probably the best looking 3D fighting game of the previous generation in terms of resolution and frame rate and this is such a massive leap forward even on that.

With the texture mod alone, you can see that DC had more to give! 😢
Most systems always have more to give, most devs don't figure everything out about the hardware in a system during its lifetime (a lot is also limited by the SDKs themselves), it's usually the homebrew scene that finds what the hardware is capable of.
@@madmax2069 Yeah but I'm not sure is better textures would require a lot of research/documentation even on early days. Probably there was time constraining though
The original textures are better, as are the colours and lighting. The hack is running in widescreen which is the only win.

@overwatch761 it's got some things that are arguably better. The texture resolution. The look of the silky clothing, and it's definitely an upgrade for gen-fu. He actually almost looks like he's from part 3 with those extra details

Nice textures but maybe the lighting is little weird? I mean it's really visible the lighting changes in realtime.
In general I prefer the original one, except some parts of the darker areas that look better on the mod. But the original looks better to me.

I don't quite like the lighting in cutscenes on the hacked version. In most of them it destroys the backlighting effect supposed to be seen when the camera is placed right in front of a light source. Also the colours may look more realistic but that's not because of better programming. The original artists could perfectly do this but they chose a more saturated palette that makes colours look more vibrant.
It happens when people who can program and edit some features show total lack of any kind of artistic knowledge.

Having some sort of side by side FPS Ticker would be dope city central. Amazing nonetheless, shout out to Hitachi & PowerVR, 2 names you would never think to respect so much all these years later. Hitachi fell apart and was reborn as "Renesas" and PowerVR essentially is mainly a mobile GPU provider for phones/tablets, SoC's.
Hitachi didn't fall apart. NEC split their chip division from the main company externalizing it to Renesas that is now property of both NEC and Hitachi. Videologic's PowerVR2 (nowadays Imagination Technologies) go on doing what they did: making mid-range GPUs perfect for mobile computing.
It depends what era of Hitachi we are talking about, they hit really hard times post Global Crisis. Not necessarily through their own missteps, which had shifted their business strategy into what we know it today as.@@albertmas3752
Like most hacks, this is what happens when someone who has no artistic talent decides to do this to a game. 95% of the cutscenes have far worse lighting, often with just a single light source, so the characters look flat, especially the faces (2:08). And they've gone for more "realistic" colours but that isn't what DoA2 was about. The vibrant saturated colours looked beautiful and perfectly fit the game and the DC's excellent colour output.
The true DoA2 on DC can't be beaten it's still a gorgeous game and still the best in the series.
DoA5 and DoA on 3DS were really good too, but come on, DoA2 is the king.

In most situations the characters look flatter in the original, the shading is more pronounced in the mod, looks almost like the ps2 version.
It's closer to DOA 2 Ultimate, and DOA 3, if you think this look bad, them you probably won't like how the "better" versions on Xbox look too, both made by OG creators.
This is an odd in-between the PS2 hardcore edition, and the Xbox Ultimate remake. Its quite impressive what was able to be done not just on the textures, but the lighting too.
WOW! I would love to have a dreamcast like this with all the games already inside, including Naomi and Atomiswave!

Now that's a proper d-pad for a fighting game. Especially for performing quarter and full circle inputs. For a 2000 game there is a lot attention detail to clothing physics during combat.

This mod is far from being finished, It was just a test playground ,lots of things in this video are either not modified, not final or just proof of concept to test what things can be modified.
Also some color tint variations I am seeing in the video are not because of the mod, the Dragon Hills stage specially shows a blue'ish tint in this video and I don't recall changing the lighting in any stage...
The textures in the hack looks really good, but I kind preffer the lighting in the original, the hack just a weird white spotlight in the character.
This makes me appreciate the original lighting setup and texture colours on the original release even more.
Texture detail is improvement worthy in just some outfits, but it wouldn't have been all too visible on the displays of the time.

I like both looks the Original was amazing when it came out with bright colours and the retexture is definitely more detailed with more natural looking colours looking closer to dead or alive 2 Ultimate.
That was the goal to update it to look closer to later games in the series 😊
@@esppiral nearly all of TVs/monitors can change saturation. If it was important to show or share with people then ReShade with Color Gamut or with Color Tempreture do the same. PC's Color Management with Adobe color profiles comes handy too, but broken anywhere outside Mac Os, and looks as capitalist/monopoly Samsung privilege on Android too

One month Caju. Watched it again.
1. The textures look quite good on the hack version. Especially the brick layout on the first stage.
2. 6:28 A lot intricate details on Gen-Fu's outfit standout on the hack version.
3. The lighting effects during the Tengu cutscene stands out a little better.

Nothing looks worse than skin with a healthy outdoor glow. Every game modder knows you should be lit like you're working at the office 24/7.
Um dos jogos ds década de 90 que até hoje me impressiona com os gráficos.
DOA2 do Dreamcast tem uma coisa interessante, que nas "cutscenes" ele reduz o framerate para 30 fps para poder ter dois pontos de luz e sombra projetados sobre os personagens ao invéz de apenas 1. Quando acaba a cutscene e vai começar a luta muda suavemente para apenas 1 ponto de luz e o fps passa para 60. Na hack dá de ver que, pelo menos por agora, eles desligaram os dois pontos de luz das cutscenes, o que inclusive causa uma pequena falha de luz ao final de cada cutscene. Talvez para compensar o maior processamento de vídeo que as texturas maiores exigem, talvez um bug ou efeito colateral indesejado, não dá de dizer. Dito isso, as texturas dos personagens estão mais detalhados, mas eu acho que ainda gosto mais da versão com as cutscenes com dois pontos de luz e sombra.

The Xbox textures are great, but Sometimes I prefer the of lighting.
Doa2 is the best 3d looking game of the 90's by far, even the early 2000s.
Also, a lot of assets look stretched.
It looks like they implemented a wide screen mode. The characters and level geometry are unaffected, it is only the overlay graphics that are stretched.

I have mixed feelings on the lighting changes but when it comes down to the alternative textures and models it's a massive upgrade. It looks like DoA 3 in a way.

The mod show the untapped and unused potential of the dreamcast particularly in specular lighting,shading and better textures quality in some areas etc. But the implementation of these are not good for thegame though. You can see where the improvements and upgrades are but it doesnt made it look better than the game original look. What Dreamcast need is a game build completely up from scratch using these techniques then we can finally see what Dreamcast games full potential and glory would be like.
Yes. Also I do not see any speculation lighting (where?) I only see same lighting but using offset vertex color as well. I think many people are confusing real specular lighting with just normal lighting that uses offset color = it does not just darken the texture but also brighten it

I don't mind the extra textures, but could they at least keep the color tone like what the original had? It's like someone just took the game & suck the color out of it. Some of the models in the hacked version also have missing shadows on there faces.

I remember the first time the game was unveiled at the Tokyo Games Show, it BLEW PEOPLE'S MIND! I went nuts seeing how amazing this game was at that show and people were more in love with the dreamcast. All was wonderful until Sony went nuts with Metal Gear 2 and other titles.
3:43 This scene is ruined. The sun is in front of her and they decide to make her shirt fully visible from the back. If the sun is in front of you their would be a dark shadow behind you. This hack has no respect for proper shading & lighting.

I downloaded the hack from Dreamcast Talk but have no idea how to patch it (tried to use Universal Patcher). I´d like to test it on my actual DC with a cdi.

update! I managed to make it work with Universal Patcher and Dreamshell SD tru Serial port. Have some slowdowns due to SD card reading, but its playable, some retextured costumes looks amazing...sadly crashes when trying to play with the naked kasumi costume :( (you have to unlock it completing arcade mode with kasumi several times, each time is a new costume).I´d really like to test it con CDI, but not sure how to convert GDI to CDI, even using GDI Explorer. Anyway, is FANTASTIC we have this on our DCs! If retail DOA 2 LE looks already better than DOA 2 Hard Core in several areas, with this mod it stomps PS2 version on visual level.
I like the hack. Nicer appearance of shadows and textures are a great touch.

Como modificação e melhoria, ficou muito bom! Porém, as cores mudam e os desenhos nas roupas mudam. Quando o char é congelado ou vai dar fade out, ocorre uma mudança radical nas texturas.

Some are saying that this mod is bad or didn't improve anything but I like the change in color and texture in some costumes, like Kasumi's and Ayana's second outfit looks better to me. Except for Leifang, I prefer her original costume texture and colors

I’ve theorized that a lot of dreamcast games use ps1 dev tools so the dreamcast never really showed it’s true potential.

the textures are great, but the models are really flat with that little light. It's missing that "next-gen" look that made it so remarkable in the 2000s

Look worse in my opinion, I prefer those vibrant saturated colors from the original naomi game, reminds me Sega arcade games from that era.
The original looks better imo purely because of the lighting. It's much more dynamic.

I think they were trying to replicate the DOA2 Ultimate´s look, not the Ps2 version. And actually the Ps2 version already has better lightning than the Dreamcast version.

@@PhilipMarcYTthe original PS2 port or the "Ultimate" version they did that actually takes advantage of the PS2 hardware and has 480p supoort? Because that last one is actually worth looking at. The first PS2 port was a disaster, agreed.
I don't see whats so great about this texture mod, the wide screen was actually cool, but this texture mod made the faces of Kasumi, Ayane,Lei-Feng and Tina look pale and ghostly, like they're not well, the only good thing about the texture mod ive seen was it significantly brightened up darker scenes, like when Hayabusa attacks Kasumi, or Tina's red and white striped shirt and the tengu boss. Other than than clothing looked dull and washed out.
How do i enable this hack ?
Hack looks aweful.... Loss of sharpness is extreme
Fine if you want to change the textures but why in the hell did the hacker change the lighting? it was already fine the way it was and now it looks terrible in most places.
This is an easy skip for me until someone learns how to stop messing with things that don't need to be changed.

The colors took a nosedive in the hacked version. Fitting a circle in a square is not always the best choice.
I don´t like how everything is desaturated on the hacked one... the added detail is nice tho.
Although i like th new textures, I prefer the original lighting. It looks closer to XBox but the lighting isn't totally there

É um bom rack, mas ainda prefiro o original, as novas texturas ficaram boas, mas a escolha de deixar o jogo desbotado pra tentar emular um HDR, ou cores "mais naturais" deixou DOA2 feio, morto vivo KKK

As texturas estao melhores porem td parece levemente mais serriilhado e essa luz azulada e opacidade de cores nao ficou melhor q o original, o diferencial dessa versão de dreamcast e justamente as belas cores esse game e pra ser bonito nao realista
