      I agree, like to look at a specific engine design. You might even consider expanding it out to doing engines from the past and why they were the best at that time.

      Thanks Jason! I think what I like best regarding your approach to these reviews is keeping it to a single car/model per video. Many of the others out there like to group several together and most of them I'm not interested in. Keep up the technical descriptions. The in-depth descriptions make your reviews far more interesting. Many of them out there aren't much more than "video P/R promo sheets." To me, this is much more worth watching. Well done, thanks again... Gary

    5.0 also has a really nice power band as well. It can pull in high rpm range pretty well and still has low end grunt. You just have to drive one to see and feel how nice this engine drives. It's also proven very reliable and has massive aftermarket opportunity. Absolutely love this motor.

    • @lobbyrobby

      I agree with the pulling in high rpms. These coyotes scream but the low end torque is pretty lame imo

      @@lobbyrobby I own one and I can agree. The engine is fast under high acceleration sure but it’s missing that low end pushrod v8 torque that pins you to your seat and makes city driving fun.

      Longevity, and in the case of the M103, power potential. People have made huge power reliably with unopened m103's. There's a drift car making over 700hp with one reliably with nothing else internally but valve springs. I love the fact that nobody knows about it or cares about the cars they come in, because they're all cheap as dirt.

I really like this about my 1986 Foxbody Mustang, although it's 60s tech compared to this. Simplicity is a big benefit for hotrodders and hobbyists - although this engine makes my old 5.0 look like a Flathead.

    Amazing improvements of the 5.0L (classic 302 cu.in.) engine since the days when it first had to use unleaded fuel and serious emission controls. In the Mustang II the 302 had only 139 hp. I owned a 1986 Mustang, the first year for fuel injection in the Mustang, and it had 200 hp, plus got 25 mpg at 70 mph. Now the 5.0 has 480 hp in the Bullitt version. Wonderful what science and engineering can accomplish.....and still get about 25 mpg on the freeway.

    • @mikeymike4g63
      @mikeymike4g63 6 років тому +4

      ianriggs not to mention something that's actually revolutionary when it comes to engine innovation (Nissan's VVEL)... unlike the Miller cycle rehash that Mazda keeps cringily revisiting. He did a video on it as if it was the best thing since sliced bread and fried apricots. Check out the vq37VHR!

    • @mikeymike4g63
      @mikeymike4g63 6 років тому +4

      Michael Doucet it's not that impressive and a major part of how it works is just the boring Miller cycle nonsense they implemented in the Mazda millennia. The Nissan VQ37vhr actually has really interesting technology in it that no other engine has. There are no intake camshafts, the valve lift is infinitely adjustable as well as timing. That's right, the lift can go from almost closed to almost race-cam levels of lift (over 0.430 inches factory set, 0.500 maximum). This is pretty impressive and deserves more coverage considering it's been out since at least 2008...

    • @MOS6582
      @MOS6582 6 років тому

      It's interesting technology but it will only be applied in 4cyl engines in boring family hatches. If they made it into an 8000rpm 3.5L V8 in and put it in a toyota 86 sized RWD manual-only coupe - that would be cool. Proper 21st century Miata.

    • @mikeymike4g63
      @mikeymike4g63 6 років тому +1

      MOS6582 look up how the Miller cycle engine works, it's ridiculous. it requires a supercharger because the intake valve doesn't close, the charge pressure is used to keep compression in the engine. this can't work in high performance settings because you're going to exceed the supercharger's capability to hold that compression in the cylinder. it's just ridiculous.

      GT 350 vs Base C7 would be a hard choice but GT vs Base Stingray, I would choose the Stingray. I like it a lot better, feels lower, trq on the low end is very good and handles very well. The Corvette is built very well aluminum chassis, lighter, targa top and functional vents all around. I would recommend getting the Z51 version so if you do want to go to the track you will have a dry sump oiling system which is better than wet sump. Also the Z51 will give you a good base like to build up the car for the track. I would only recommend the Stingray Z51 and Grand Sport. The Z06 not so much because of the heat issues but I think the newer versions use better heat exchanges for the blower.

    I think at some point you should take a look at the smaller EcoBoost engines Ford make. I mean, sure, they aren't these badass huge V8s that most people love seeing, but they are really interesting little motors and are put into cars that the average Joe can afford. Plus, they don't make you feel guilty about how much fuel you burn. Both the 1.0L and the 1.5L (the one that's in the new Fiesta ST) are cool!

    One engine that I always remember was in a Mack truck... it was around 1974 vintage R model Mack... quite advanced in its day. The turbo on the exhaust (while not a new concept back then, was not so as common as big diesel turbos became later) would divert some of the charge air to a smaller turbo which then pumped ambient air to an air-to-air charge air cooler. I was a kid of around 14 yrs old then, and rode in the truck... the sound that engine would make as it loaded up was just amazing...! To hear the small turbo begin to spool... still sends shivers down my spine! Would be neat to get your take on the engineering that happened at Mack trucks... they did some very innovative engineering back in 60's and 70's. The engine was the ENDT 676 Maxidyne... very cool!

      1 atmosphere is 14.7psi at sea level, if you have an engine with 7psi of boost technically the engine size is the equivalent of 1.5 times that of what it actually is. So 4 liters is 6, however most modern performance turbo are around 12 to 14 psi, making them double.
      When you consider that most engines end up very similar in efficiency.

    • @hochhaul
      @hochhaul 6 років тому +3

      These DOHC V8 "engines of the future" only just match the much higher displacement 6.2 LT1 in fuel economy while delivering 25 lb-ft less torque, all while requiring far more than double the number of moving parts. The Coyote is the future due to emissions regulations, NOT fuel efficiency, power output, or physical dimensions.

    • @CoyoteFTW
      @CoyoteFTW 6 років тому +11

      hochhaul - it’s a DOHC it’s going to use more parts. That doesn’t mean anything. If you’re so keen on moving parts. Leave it NA. Displacement wise the coyote is smaller making more horsepower and solution to torque would be forced induction. 4 valves breath better. The current coyote makes more power than the current LT. for example the 7.0L in the 2013 z/28 made 505hp the 5.2L in the 2015 Mustang gt350 makes 525hp. So those “moving parts” are there for a reason

      V8's have never been the future. A smaller v12 will get you to 200mph more efficiently and scream a much nicer sound, but Ferrari did that before the Ford Mustang was popular lmao.
      Electric really is the future, nothing can or will beat it. If they don't produce more power, they have better range. I should mention the main electric car company, Tesla, produces luxury Sedans that can beat Dodge's best effort at a street legal drag car... and they don't have to compromise a luxurious interior.

    Yes, please keep doing these. I love getting comparisons between the statistics on engines and such, and what those yield as an end product. I myself am trying to build a 1996 truck motor, though I am trying to build it to be as efficient as it possibly can while still pushing the 400 NA horsepower mark. I know compression brings efficiency, granted that you can keep temperatures under control and your ignition advanced. so I really like learning what the boar in the stroke is, what the compression is, and what the block, heads, etc are made of, anything that I can take and possibly apply to my 1996 to try to make it as absolutely efficient as it could possibly be, really push that efficiency boundary while also making great power still, being able to make the truck accelerate quickly. I don't really have any interest in making the truck perform like a typical truck, such as having big tires and towing heavy loads or off roading.
    soda cap that off, yes please keep doing these videos. 💪

    I believe the 5.0 naming designation for the original 5.0L 302 was to differentiate it from the 4.9L inline six cylinder truck/van engine, probably for sales purposes. The Coyote was called 5.0 mostly for nostalgic purposes.
    I dig the engine videos man. Very cool.

    • @scottkrafft6830
      @scottkrafft6830 6 років тому +2

      The original 5.0s were reliable engines, but remarkably bad for performance. They made about 130 HP, and were offered in trucks and vans like the E-150 and F-series alongside the 300 I6. It wasn't until the late 80's that the Mustang 5.0 gained a reputation. Every other version (in the F-series, E-series, and probably a couple cars) still made good ol' malaise-era 130 HP right until they were discontinued. At least Ford got their stuff together with this one.

    • @avgFloridian
      @avgFloridian 6 років тому +1

      They made 210-215hp stock in the Mustang (1985) and Explorer (1998-2001). Not great, no, but a moderate Holly carb, AFR heads and a Victor Jr intake on a stock bottom end made 550hp (530hp in a similar EFI setup). That's more performance than you'll ever need on the street, in a much smaller package than the mod motors that make a big block look smaller than average. It depends on what you your end goal is, what you have, and what you have to spend. If I were to engine swap my car right now, the old motor gets me there for several thousand less.

    • @timyanke9559

      Good theory. But I ask why is a gm 350ci called a 5.7l and a ford 351ci called a 5.8l and a dodge 360ci called a 5.9? I think ford likes to round up.

    • @avgFloridian
      @avgFloridian 6 років тому

      Well... 350 is 5.73L, 351 is 5.75L, 360 is 5.89L but we don't go to the hundredths place so the appropriately round to 5.7, 5.8 and 5.9 respectively. The only weird one is the 302, which is 4.94L being rounded to 5.0L. Their 300 I6 is 4.91L. Those would both round to 4.9L, which is confusing to truck/van buyers where both engines were offered. The 302 is also 4.94889L, which is almost 4.95L that would then round to 5.0L. No, it's not totally honest, but the 300 was developed before the 302, so they had to find a simple way to differentiate the two.
      Some other engines they've had were the 140CID Lima, which was called 2.3L, and that was 2.29L. The 153CID version was called the 2.5L, and it was actually 2.50722L. The Essex V6 was 232CID which is 3.80L, and they called it the 3.8L. In 2004 it became 237CID, which is 3.88L, and they called it a 3.9L. There was also a 256CID version that replaced the old 300 I6. That comes out to 4.195L, and they called it 4.2L.
      It's all standard rounding convention by everyone across the board. The only one that's different is the 302/5.0L.

      My 4.2 v6 had "the tick" since it was new and it lasted about as long as any other v6. All the ticking is is just noise from a single cylinder. At idle, not every cylinder is contributing the same power, usually one is contributing more.
      Ie an inline 6.
      1 15%
      2 10%
      3 35%
      4 10%
      5 15%
      6 10%
      Something like that. The cylinder thats contributing more is going to have more sound through it, and will sometimes have that tick. Its not valves running with no oil, that is a different sound and way way way more noticible. Apply that to a v8 and its the same damn thing. Also, thats why diesels have a rhythmic knock as well.

      Oh right now, the 2020 base mustang gt with m/t is $36,500 so there is a price bump.
      I got an out going base 2019 gt with black accent pkg for $33000 BEFORE taxes, fees, interest, and covid-19.
      A base GT is not a special order. The problem is finding a dealer that sells a base GT.

    BMW S85 V10. The only BMW production V10 ever, and the only engine not based on a normal N series engine, nor shared with any non M cars. It is basically a race engine in a road car, and it is truly a monster. It's also one of the best sounding engines in history.

    This is the first time ever seeing your new series of videos. Actually last night before I was even aware of this video I was doing just that looking at the best engines of all time. Everyone votes on the best car of all times the best looking of all times but they always forget about the engine. The heart and soul of the car what truly makes a great car. I hope you don't in the series Focus just on new engines I would like to see some more historical engines.

    Unfortunately these engines are crap because of the spray in liner causing early wear and piston slap. I know because I have one and I'm on my second engine because of scoring at cylinder 4

      tb12269 your not alone ford is buying my car back because of multiple failures the short block failed first at 4600 an then the 10r80 failed at 5100 miles. Got the car back an the new motor started to tick or knock guess ford calls it piston slap that’s what they wrote on my papers

    • @JohanSalvattore
      @JohanSalvattore 5 років тому +6

      tb12269 you can’t blame 1.3% of these engines that have gone bad as a whole. The engine is awesome it just needs some tweaks as well the transmission. Unfortunately the trial and error is coming at the expense of a few thousand customers.
      Mind you I have an 18 mustang GT myself.

Your allowed to think whatever way you want it’s not just the mustangs either the f-150 coyotes are failing at alarming rates too. 2 guys last night on the forum I follow 1 with a rousch blower at 14k an the other one 5800k main bearings eaten.

    I would suggest the 2.3L eco-boost
    The history of that engine going back to the 2.3L svt mustang to the DISI MRZ version in the mazdaspeeds and now the eco-boost in the RS is interesting all on its own even before you begin to break it down in engineering advancements.
